FOR NEW JERSEY: LHP Ryan Lobban (1-1, 3.38 ERA - fifth start) FOR WORCESTER: RHP Chris Farley (2-2, 2.76 ERA - sixth start) Ryan Lobban, who has gone seven shutout innings in each of his past two starts, looks to turn in another good outing to get New Jersey back on track after the Jackals have dropped five of their past six contests. Lobban, a 26-year-old New Jersey native who spent the past two seasons as a member of the Tornadoes, faces his former teammates for the first time in a Jackals uniform. Chris Farley, a 27-year-old who was drafted by the Red Sox in the 14th round of the 2001 draft, has spent parts of two seasons at the Triple-A level during his 10-year professional career. In four starts against New Jersey in 2009, Farley went 1-0 with a 2.74 ERA. Like Lobban, Farley has turned in back-to-back quality starts (surrendering three or less runs in six or more innings). New Jersey leads the season series 3-2, and the all-time series 40-36.

Abraham Nunez is tied for the league lead with 20 walks and ranks fourth with eight thefts... 2010 NEW JERSEY JACKALS GAME NOTES MONDAY, JUNE 21 - NEW JERSEY 6, WORCESTER 5

The New Jersey Jackals surrendered a season-high 13 runs on 18 hits as the Worcester Tornadoes, behind a stellar outing by starter John Kelly, came away with a 13-3 win on Tuesday night at a damp Yogi Berra Stadium. In the losing effort, second baseman Argenis Reyes picked up three of the Jackals’ eight hits in a 3-for-5 night at the plate. Right fielder Kevin Clark walked twice, but an 0-for-3 effort snapped his league-best 15-game hitting streak. Kelly (3-0) struck out six batters and allowed just three hits in five shutout innings as he beat the Jackals for the second time in less than a week. New Jersey starter Nick Asselin (1-4) lost his third straight decision after surrendering eight runs – six earned – on 11 hits over five frames. For the Jackals, rookie Luis Fernandez contributed three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Trailing 8-0, the Jackals began to rally back when first baseman Jabe Bergeron laced a two-run single with two outs in the sixth. New Jersey cut its deficit to 8-3 on an RBI groundout off the bat of left fielder Jacob Butler in the eighth, but the Tornadoes plated five runs – just one earned – against reliever Jairo Mendez in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring.

BRUISED AND BATTERED

Over the first 20 games of the 2010 season, five New Jersey players spent a total of 41 games on the disabled list. Saturday, June 19 marked the first time this season that New Jersey didn’t have an injured player on the disabled list or inactive list. That list doesn’t include rookie OF Matt Stiffler, who injured his hamstring on June 4 and was released the next day because the Jackals disabled list was full.

LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKAL-APPROVED

This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.

MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR

Three current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

The Jackals opening-day roster included seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting average would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.

ALUMNI UPDATE

Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes, where he is teammates with outfielder Timo Perez. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26. Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Since 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations.

2009: A RETROSPECTIVE

Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (2720) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.

FIVE-STAR QUALITY

In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY JUNE 22 1917 - Boston pitcher Babe Ruth starts against Washington. He walks leadoff man Eddie Foster, griping to plate umpire Brick Owens after each pitch. On ball four, Ruth plants a right to the umpire’s jaw. He is ejected, and Ernie Shore relieves. Foster is caught stealing, and Shore retires all 26 men he faces in a 4-0 win, getting credit in the books for a perfect game. 1981 - Dave Koza scores Marty Barrett with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 33rd inning, giving Pawtucket a 3-2 win over Rochester and ending the longest game in professional baseball history. The game had been suspended April 19 after 32 innings and eight hours, seven minutes of play, but the continuation took only eighteen minutes to complete. Bob Ojeda pitches one inning to earn the win. 1988 - George Steinbrenner fires Billy Martin for the fifth time, replacing him with Lou Piniella. In 1985, Piniella was fired and replaced by Martin. In 1985, Martin was fired and replaced by Piniella. New York’s 40-28 record is the fourth best in the big leagues, but the Yankees had just completed a 2-7 road trip.

JOE CALFAPIETRA

CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME

MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON

MANAGERIAL CAREER

The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
