NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS CRUSH FEDERALS BEHIND SEASON-HIGH 15 RUNS Friday, June 24 Recap

Brockton, Mass. – Argenis Reyes went 4-for-5 and Mike Jones launched his sixth home run of the season as the New Jersey Jackals won their fifth straight game, hanging on for a 4-3 win over the Brockton Rox in the opener of a three-game series on a cool and damp Friday night at Campanelli Stadium. After Reyes led off the game with his first home run of the season, Rox’ third baseman Jorge Jimenez evened the score with his sixth blast of the season in the fourth. New Jersey used Jones’ two-run shot to right in the sixth inning to gain a 3-1 advantage before a Reyes RBI single in the seventh made it a 4-1 contest. Brockton battled back though, pushing a run across in the seventh on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jimenez to cut their deficit to 4-2. In the bottom of the ninth, Dominic Ramos led off with a double off Jackals’ closer Jeff Gogal. Chris Valencia followed with a base hit, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it to a double. After pinch hitter Trey Hernandez doubled home Ramos with his first career hit to pull the Rox within one at 4-3, Jimenez drew a walk to put runners at first and second with two outs. Jeremy Hunt entered in relief to face reigning Can-Am League MVP Melvin Falu, but Jackals’ third baseman Leonard Davis made a diving stop and beat Hernandez to third base for the final out. In his second start with New Jersey, right-hander Shaun Ellis surrendered just one run on six hits over six innings to improve to 3-0 since being acquired from El Paso earlier this month. Brockton starter Freddy Flores (2-1) took the loss after yielding four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 frames. Hunt retired the only batter he faced in the ninth to notch his first career save. The Jackals and Rox continue their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Isaac Pavlik (5-0, 2.34 ERA) to the mound against Brockton right-hander Julian Sampson (2-1, 4.08 ERA) at Campanelli Stadium. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com Jackal Bites: Davis, who made the game-ending diving play in the ninth inning, got his first start of the season at third base… New Jersey is now 11-0 when scoring in the first inning… Brockton stranded 11 runners on base while New Jersey left 10… The Rox committed three errors in the loss… The Jackals have now won nine of their last 11 games… Jordan Newton, who re-signed with New Jersey earlier in the day, started in left field and went 0-for-4… Jones extended his Can-Am League RBI lead to 29.

MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring training. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yankees’ organization. FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 righthander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
