TONIGHT’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: RHP Chris Allen (0-1, 4.76 ERA) FOR BROCKTON: RHP Freddy Flores (1-0, 3.00 ERA) Looking to rebound after last night’s 9-7 loss, New Jersey sends righty Chris Allen to the mound for his second start of the season. Allen took the loss in the Jackals 3-0 defeat at Pittsfield on Monday despite allowing just three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Rox starter Freddy Flores played four seasons (1997-2000) as an infielder in the independent Northern and Frontier Leagues before taking a seven-year hiatus from professional baseball and returning as a pitcher in 2008 with the Atlantic City Surf. Flores went 6-5 with a 3.93 ERA in 16 games for Brockton in 2009. After splitting the first two games on their season-opening homestand, the Jackals lead the all-time series with Brockton 53-47
Chris Allen
REAL BITS OF JACKAL
Nick Asselin turned in the first “quality start” of the season for New Jersey on Thursday as he tossed seven shutout innings. It was also the longest outing by a Jackals starter... OF Kevin Clark hit a pair of solo home runs and a double in Tuesday’s 4-2 game-one win at Pittsfield. Clark is also second in the Can-Am League with six stolen bases (Sussex OF Kraig Binick leads the league with eight)... The Jackals have left 78 runners on base over their first nine games and New Jersey’s six losses have been by a total of just 12 runs... On Tuesday, New Jersey activated C Jordan Newton from the inactive list but placed RF Quentin Davis on the disabled list with a strained oblique. Newton missed five games with shoulder tendonitis while Davis was the only Jackal to record a hit in each of the team’s first five games. Newton, Davis, and OF Jacob Butler have combined to miss 18 games so far this season... The Jackals dropped two of three to Pittsfield earlier this week, but New Jersey pitchers allowed just seven runs in the series.

In a back-and-forth contest, Brockton outslugged New Jersey 9-7 in a game that featured 24 hits. Brockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but New Jersey battled back in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. Brockton would score the game’s next five runs to gain an 8-4 advantage. New Jersey, though, would claw back once again to pull within two in the bottom of the sixth. The Rox added an insurance run in the top of the eighth and with a 9-6 lead, Brockton turned the ball over to closer Josh Papelbon in the ninth. Papelbon surrendered one run on a Jordan Newton single and New Jersey advanced the tying run to second, but Papelbon escaped the jam and preserved the two-run victory to notch his first save of the season. Brockton starter Mike Wlodarczyk (1-0) earned the win after allowing six runs, five earned, in six innings with four strikeouts. For New Jersey, left-hander Ryan Lobban (0-1) went 4 2/3 innings and surrendered six runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts. For the Jackals, Abraham Nunez went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Newton collected three hits in five at-bats. Kevin Clark scored two runs in the losing effort. Melvin Falu led the charge for Brockton, going 4-for-3 with an RBI triple and two runs scored.
THURSDAY, JUNE 3 - NEW JERSEY 1, BROCKTON 0
Jackals’ starter Nick Asselin hurled seven shutout innings and left fielder Kevin Clark drove in the game’s only run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Brockton Rox, 1-0, in their home opener on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Brockton righty Mike Smith (1-1) suffered the tough-luck loss after surrendering one run on eight hits in seven innings. Rox designated hitter Scott Wearme went 3-for-3 with a double in the losing effort.

RIGGED UP
On Monday, May 31, the Can-Am League announced that New Jersey Jackals designated hitter Shawn Riggans was named the league’s Player of the Week following the opening weekend of the 2010 season. In four games on the road against the Sussex Skyhawks, Riggans went 8-for-15 at the plate with two doubles, two home runs, and a league-high seven RBIs. His .533 batting average also tops the Can-Am League. After going 0-for-4 in Friday night’s season-opener, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native collected eight hits in his next 11 at-bats. He launched a three-run home run in the first inning of Saturday’s contest at Skylands Park before connecting on a leadoff homer in the fifth inning on Sunday. Riggans was pinch hit for in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Pittsfield and did not play in the nightcap after fouling a pair of balls off his foot.
LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKALS-APPROVED
This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.
BACK IN THE NEW JERSEY GROOVE
The Jackals return seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting average would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.
NEW JERSEY, VIA TORONTO
Nearly a fifth of the Jackals’ roster has found its way to New Jersey via the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Four current players, including outfielder Jacob Butler and pitchers Seth Overbey, Edward Rodriguez, and A.J. Wideman have all spent time with the Blue Jays.
MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR
Three current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Infielder Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26. Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Since 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations.
2009: A RETROSPECTIVE
Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (2720) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.
FIVE-STAR QUALITY
In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

JACKALS MANAGER JOE CALFAPIETRA

JOE CALFAPIETRA
CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME
MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON
MANAGERIAL CAREER
The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
