TODAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: LHP Isaac Pavlik (0-1, 1.59 ERA) FOR BROCKTON: LHP Logan Williamson (0-0, 1.35 ERA) With a 2-1 advantage in this weekend’s series vs Brockton, the Jackals send veteran Isaac Pavlik to the mound for his first start of the season. Pavlik, who also serves as New Jersey’s pitching coach, led the team with 18 starts a season ago and posted a 3.66 ERA. All four of his appearances this season have come in relief. Pavlik went 1-1 with a 3.47 ERA in three starts against Brockton in 2009. The Rox counter with 25-year-old lefty Logan Williamson, a 2004 27th-round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox. Williamson, who allowed one run on three in 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision on Tuesday at Sussex, is in his sixth pro season. The Jackals lead the all-time series with the Rox 54-47.

SATURDAY, JUNE 5 - NEW JERSEY 5, BROCKTON 4
Keith Brachold drove in all four Brockton runs, but catcher Jordan Newton’s three-RBI performance sparked the New Jersey Jackals to a come-from-behind 5-4 win on Saturday night in front of 3,872 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium. ith the game scoreless in the bottom of the fourth thanks to solid pitching by Jackals starter Chris Allen and Brockton’s Freddy Flores, Newton helped New Jersey plate the game’s first two runs. After singles by second baseman Argenis Reyes and left fielder Jacob Butler, Newton ripped a two-run, two-out double just inside third base to give the Jackals a 2-0 advantage. Brockton tied the score in the top of the sixth on Brachold’s second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right following a leadoff single by center fielder Chris Valencia. An inning later, the Rox used a Brachold RBI single to gain their first lead of the game at 3-2. But New Jersey immediately responded. In the bottom of the seventh, Newton led off with a single and advanced to third on a double to left field by newly-signed first baseman Jabe Bergeron. Bergeron’s double chased Flores from the game. With reliever Santo Maertz on the hill, Newton scored the tying run later in the frame on a wild pitch. The Jackals broke the 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the eighth. Reyes led off with a single which third baseman Abraham Nunez followed with a walk against Maertz. Right-hander Colin Lynch entered and immediately surrendered the go-ahead RBI single to left fielder Jacob Butler. A Newton sacrifice fly extended the New Jersey lead to 5-3. In the top of the ninth, Valencia ripped a two-out infield single off the leg of Jackals’ closer Romas Hicks. The next batter, Brachold, missed his second homer of the game when he doubled off the top of the wall in right to plate Valencia and pull the Rox within one at 5-4. But Hicks induced a fly out by first baseman Melvin Falu to stifle the Brockton rally. Jackals’ reliever Edward Rodriguez (1-1) faced five batters and recorded four outs to earn his first win of the season. A hit batter was Rodriguez’s only blemish. Maertz (0-2) surrendered the go-ahead run in the eighth to take the loss despite fanning three batters in one inning of work. Both Allen and Flores turned in quality starts in their second outings this season, but neither factored in the decision. Allen allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings while scattering 10 hits. He did not record a strikeout. Flores yielded three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in six frames. Brachold finished the night 4-for-5 as the Rox outhit the Jackals 12-9 in the losing effort.
ROSTER SHUFFLE
On Saturday, the Jackals made a series of transactions. New Jersey signed 1B Jabe Bergeron and RHP Jairo Mendez. OF Jacob Butler was activated from the disabled list and 1B Jovan Rosa was placed on the disabled list. The Jackals also released RHP Seth Overbey and 1B/OF Matt Stiffler. The 28-year-old Bergeron, who joins his seventh different Can-Am League team, is a career .295 hitter in six professional seasons. In 2008 with the Ottawa Rapidz, Bergeron hit a career-high .354 with 13 home runs. Mendez is a rookie out of Montclair State.

RIGGED UP
On Monday, May 31, the Can-Am League announced that New Jersey Jackals designated hitter Shawn Riggans was named the league’s Player of the Week following the opening weekend of the 2010 season. In four games on the road against the Sussex Skyhawks, Riggans went 8-for-15 at the plate with two doubles, two home runs, and a league-high seven RBIs. His .533 batting average also tops the Can-Am League. After going 0-for-4 in Friday night’s season-opener, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native collected eight hits in his next 11 at-bats. He launched a three-run home run in the first inning of Saturday’s contest at Skylands Park before connecting on a leadoff homer in the fifth inning on Sunday. Riggans was pinch hit for in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Pittsfield and did not play in the nightcap after fouling a pair of balls off his foot.
LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKALS-APPROVED
This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.
BACK IN THE NEW JERSEY GROOVE
The Jackals opening-day roster included seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting average would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.
NEW JERSEY, VIA TORONTO
Three Jackals players hae found their way to New Jersey via the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Outfielder Jacob Butler and pitchers Edward Rodriguez and A.J. Wideman have all spent time with the Blue Jays. Former New Jersey hurlers Ted Serro and Seth Overbey also came out of the Toronto pipeline.
MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR
Three current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Infielder Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26. Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Since 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations.
2009: A RETROSPECTIVE
Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (2720) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.
FIVE-STAR QUALITY
In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

JACKALS MANAGER JOE CALFAPIETRA
#44
JOE CALFAPIETRA
CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME
MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON
MANAGERIAL CAREER
The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
