YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: The Jackals took a 2-1 lead in their four-game series against the Boulders on Sunday afternoon, pounding out 18 hits en route to their largest victory of the season, 13-1. In the win, Jackals’ starter Isaac Pavlik struck out 10 batters without yielding a walk and allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings. Offensively, Argenis Reyes went 4-for-5 while Leonard Davis and Myron Leslie each added four hits. The Jackals bullpen continued its dominance over Rockland as Bobby Gagg and backup infielder Dan Betteridge each fired an inning of scoreless relief. In the series, New Jersey relievers have allowed just two runs on seven hits in 15 innings. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: The Jackals send 25year-old southpaw James Leverton to the mound tonight for his third start of the season. Leverton, an eighth round pick by the Cubs in 2008 out of Texas Tech, has posted a 1-1 record with a 2.38 ERA so far this season. In 2010, the native Texan went 10-1 with a 2.75 ERA as a reliever at three levels in the Cubs’ organization, advancing as high as Double-A. WHAT A RELIEF: On Monday, Jeff Gogal was named the Pointstreak Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week. A former standout at Montclair State, the 28-yearold southpaw hurled 3 2/3 hitless shutout innings and notched two saves while striking out six batters in three contests during the week ending June 5. CALL IT A COMEBACK: The Jackals showed a flair for the dramatic over the first two games of their current series against Rockland, battling back from deficits of 10-0 and 7-0 on Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. In Friday’s series opener, New Jersey trailed 10-0 in the third inning before eventually falling by an 11-10 score. On Saturday, the Jackals spotted the Boulders a 7-0 advantage before scoring eight unanswered runs to steal an 8-7 victory. HOME IS WHERE THE BATS ARE: In five games since returning home, the Jackals have raised their team batting average 68 points from .248 to .316. The Jackals are batting .366 in those five home games and are averaging 9.6 runs per game at home. Through five openings, New Jersey also leads the Can-Am League in average attendance at 2,378.

off the Palisades Parkway in Pomona, N.Y., on June 16 against the Brockton Rox. JACKAL BITES: Five of New Jersey’s first nine games have been decided by one run... After turning in his second four-hit game of the season yesterday, Argenis Reyes leads the Can-Am League in batting with a .444 clip. Two other Jackals appear in the top 10 including Mike Jones (3rd at .424) and Nick Giarraputo (10th at .371)... Giarraputo is the only Jackal to hit safely in each of the team’s first nine games... Jones is tied for second in the circuit in both home runs (3) and RBIs (11)... Myron Leslie and Jeremy Slayden are both tied for second in the league with five doubles... The Jackals have allowed a first-inning run in six of their first nine contests.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS PROVIDE PAVLIK PLENTY OF SUPPORT IN 13-1 DRUBBING OF ROCKLAND Sunday, June 5 Recap

Little Falls, N.J. – The Jackals spotted their starting pitcher, Isaac Pavlik, an early nine-run lead and the southpaw struck out 10 batters without allowing a walk as New Jersey defeated the Rockland Boulders, 13-1, on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. After New Jersey starters had allowed 16 runs in five innings over the past two nights, Pavlik took the mound on Sunday and allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings. In three starts, Pavlik has struck out 27 batters and walked just two. New Jersey opened the scoring with seven runs in the first inning. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly off the bat of catcher Myron Leslie made it 1-0. Two batters later, right fielder Jeremy Slayden ripped a two-run double to help New Jersey open up a 3-0 advantage. An RBI single by first baseman Kris Sanchez extended the Jackals’ lead to 4-0 before New Jersey re-loaded the bases and shortstop Mike DeJesus cleared them with a three-run double to make it 7-0. In the bottom of the second, designated hitter Mike Jones launched his team-leading third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field following a Leslie single, to give New Jersey a 9-0 lead. Rockland broke through in the fourth inning when an RBI double by catcher Todd Jennings made it 9-1, but the Boulders managed just one hit the rest of the game. The Jackals put the game further out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With newlysigned reliever Justin Ottman in the game for Rockland, New Jersey strung together five straight hits to begin the frame. An RBI double by left fielder Leonard Davis and an RBI single by pinch hitter Chris Anderson made it 11-1 before the Jackals plated the game’s final two runs on an a Jones single and a Nick Giarraputo double. The Jackals bullpen continued to dominate Rockland as Bobby Gagg tossed a scoreless eighth inning and New Jersey infielder Dan Betteridge retired the heart of the Boulders’ lineup in order in the ninth in just his second career pitching appearance. Over the first three games of the series, the Jackals’ bullpen has allowed just two runs in 15 innings. Offensively for New Jersey, second baseman Argenis Reyes picked up his second four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, while Jones and Davis each collected three hits. Jackal Bites: With the win, New Jersey improves to 5-4 while Rockland falls to 5-5… With his ninth-inning RBI double, Jackals third baseman Nick Giarraputo extended his hitting streak to nine games to begin the season… The first five hitters in the Jackals lineup went a combined 13-for-21 with nine runs scored… New Jersey pitchers turned in five one-two-three innings… The Boulders are now winless in five games when facing a left-handed starting pitcher… The 12-run win represented New Jersey’s largest margin of victory since they defeated the Sussex Skyhawks 15-2 on August 4, 2010.

UPCOMING MILESTONES: Leonard Davis’ next home run will be the 100th of his career... Manager Joe Calfapietra is nine wins shy of 400 regular-season victories with New Jersey. A RIVALRY BEGINS: Last week, the Jackals took two of three games in their first-ever series against the Newark Bears. The Bears won Sunday’s opener in Newark, but the Jackals took the final two games on Tuesday and Wednesday when the series shifted to Little Falls. MOVIN’ ON UP: Last Sunday, former Worcester Tornadoes’ hurler Tom Cochran earned his first call to the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds. The 27-year-old, who went 13-3 for the Jackals’ Can-Am League-rival Tornadoes in 2008, was 5-1 in eight starts for Triple-A Louisville prior to his promotion. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. FAMILIAR FACES: Seven players from the Jackals 2010 team are on the 2011 opening day roster, including pitchers Isaac Pavlik, A.J. Wideman, Mike Pontius, and Chris Vasami, and infielders Argenis Reyes, Dan Betteridge, and Mike DeJesus. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring training. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yankees’ organization. FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 righthander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
