LAST NIGHT’S CONTEST: Jeremy Slayden drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to push across the winning run as the Jackals defeated the Rockland Boulders, 3-2, to notch their third straight win. Slayden’s walk came on the 12th pitch of the at-bat. Jackals’ starter James Leverton struck out seven batters and allowed two runs in 6.2 innings before the New Jersey bullpen chipped in 3.1 scoreless frames. Offensively, Leonard Davis hit his 100th career home run and drove in a pair of runs. With the victory, New Jersey took three of four games from the expansion Boulders. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: The Jackals send newlysigned southpaw Ryan Kulik to the mound for his first start in a New Jersey uniform. Kulik, a 25-yearold Marlton native, inked with the Jackals earlier today. He began the 2011 season with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals where he made seven relief appearances. Kulik, a former standout at Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., was selected by the Cardinals in the eighth round of the 2008 draft. He has spent parts of three seasons at the Double-A level and advanced as high as Triple-A Memphis, where he started eight games last season. WHAT A RELIEF: On Monday, Jeff Gogal was named the Pointstreak Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week. A former standout at Montclair State, the 28-yearold southpaw hurled 3 2/3 hitless shutout innings and notched two saves while striking out six batters in three contests during the week ending June 5. CALL IT A COMEBACK: The Jackals showed a flair for the dramatic during the first two games of their four-game series against Rockland on June 3-4, battling back from deficits of 10-0 and 7-0, respectively. In the series opener, New Jersey trailed 10-0 in the third inning before eventually falling by an 11-10 score. In game two, the Jackals spotted the Boulders a 7-0 advantage before scoring eight unanswered runs to steal an 8-7 victory. New Jersey went on to win the final two contests to take the series.

JACKAL BITES: In their four-game series against Rockland, the New Jersey bullpen allowed just two runs and eight hits over 18.1 innings while striking out 19 batters... Jackals’ relievers have turned in 13.1 consecutive scoreless innings and allowed just two hits over that stretch... Nick Giarraputo is the only Jackal to hit safely in each of the team’s first 10 games while Argenis Reyes, the league leader in batting average, has hit safely in eight straight contests... The Jackals have allowed a first-inning run in six of their first 10 contests... New Jersey starting pitchers have notched 44 strikeouts while walking just 11 batters (a 4-to-1 ratio).

JACKALS vs. BEARS 2011.................................................................. 2-1 The Jackals and Bears will be meeting for the first time this season. With their ballparks separated by just nine miles, the Jackals played their inaugural season in 1998 and the Bears followed in 1999. The Bears played in the Atlantic League from their inception through 2010.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS WALK PAST BOULDERS IN EXTRA INNINGS TO WIN SERIES Monday, June 6 Recap

Little Falls, N.J. – Jeremy Slayden drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to push across the winning run as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Rockland Boulders, 3-2, to notch their third straight win on Monday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. With the victory, New Jersey took three of four games from the expansion Boulders. Slayden, who was behind in the count no balls and two strikes against Rockland reliever Kyle Wilson, worked a 12-pitch at-bat to plate Argenis Reyes with the winning run. Reyes, who was hit in the knee by a pitch leading off the inning, advanced to third on a double off the bat of Leonard Davis and Myron Leslie followed with a walk to load the bases. Davis finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs while Reyes also chipped in a pair of hits. The Jackals manufactured a run in the top of the first inning when leadoff batter Chris White singled, stole second, and was pushed across thanks to back-to-back groundouts by Reyes and Davis to make it 1-0. Davis then led off the third inning with a home run, the 100th of his career, to extend the Jackals’ lead to 2-0. Jackals starter James Leverton, who allowed just two baserunners through the first six innings, ran into trouble in the seventh. Leverton, who had retired 10 straight batters heading into the frame, surrendered a leadoff single to Ryan Mollica, who scored when Vic Buttler tripled off the warning track in center field to cut the Jackals’ lead to 2-1. Sean Smith followed with an RBI single to center to even the score at 2-2. From there, the New Jersey bullpen continued its dominance with Steve Fox retiring all four batters he faced, Jared Locke tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Phil Bartleski picking up the final two outs in the top of the tenth. New Jersey’s bullpen finished the series having allowed just two runs and eight hits in 18 1/3 innings with 19 strikeouts. The Jackals loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth inning against Rockland starter Bobby Blevins, but Boulders closer Adrian Martin entered and slammed the door on the Jackals rally with the assistance of a nifty double play started by Mollica. In the bottom of the ninth, Nick Giarraputo led off with a single and stole second, but once again Martin escaped unscathed to send the game into extra innings. Leverton, who struck out seven batters and allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings, did not factor in the decision as Bartleski (1-0) picked up the win. Wilson (0-2) took the loss for Rockland. Jackal Bites: With the win, New Jersey improves to 6-4 while the Boulders fall to 5-6… Nick Giarraputo’s ninthinning single extended his hitting streak to ten games… Argenis Reyes is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak… The contest marked the only game during the homestand that New Jersey didn’t post double-digit hits.

A RIVALRY BEGINS: Last week, the Jackals took two of three games in their first-ever series against the Newark Bears. The Bears won Sunday’s opener in Newark, but the Jackals took the final two games on Tuesday and Wednesday when the series shifted to Little Falls. MOVIN’ ON UP: Last Sunday, former Worcester Tornadoes’ hurler Tom Cochran earned his first call to the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds. The 27-year-old, who went 13-3 for the Jackals’ Can-Am League-rival Tornadoes in 2008, was 5-1 in eight starts for Triple-A Louisville prior to his promotion. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. FAMILIAR FACES: Seven players from the Jackals 2010 team are on the 2011 opening day roster, including pitchers Isaac Pavlik, A.J. Wideman, Mike Pontius, and Chris Vasami, and infielders Argenis Reyes, Dan Betteridge, and Mike DeJesus. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring training. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yankees’ organization. FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 righthander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
