SETTING THE SCENE: After Saturday night’s 7-2 come-from-behind win at Quebec, which helped the Jackals earn the split against the first-place Capitales, New Jersey has a quick turnaround heading into Sunday evening’s contest. With six games remaining in the first half, the Jackals are 5 1/2 games behind the Capitales, whose magic number to clinch the firsthalf title is two. New Jersey is now 4-4 against the Capitales, who are 30-10 through Saturday night. LEVERTON HONORED: Last Monday, James Leverton was tabbed Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week. In two starts during the week of June 27-July 3, Leverton went 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA. In 14 1/3 innings pitched, the 25-year-old gave up an earned run with 10 hits and two walks while striking out 16 batters. JACKAL BITES: • Shortstop Mike DeJesus is the only Jackal to start all 41 games at the same position. DeJesus is batting .441 (15-for-34) in seven games in July. • Argenis Reyes, who has been in the leadoff spot each of New Jersey’s last 16 games, has reached base safely to begin the contest just once over his last eight games after accomplishing the feat in 14 of his first 20 games in the leadoff spot. • The Jackals have committed just three errors over their last 11 games after committing just one error in their most recent four-game set at Quebec. • Myron Leslie leads the circuit with 34 walks (eight more than any other player) and Jones ranks fifth with 24 free passes... Leslie also leads the league with a .448 OBP. • Mike Jones leads the league with 39 RBIs through 41 games, putting him on pace for 89 RBIs this season. New Jersey’s single-season franchise RBIs record is 77, set by Kevin Grijak in 2004. Leslie ranks second on that list after knocking in 75 runs in 2009. Jones is just 2-for-30 (.067) when leading off innings but is batting .423 with runners on base and a teambest .400 with runners in scoring position. • New Jersey’s bullpen allowed just two runs in 13 innings (a 1.38 ERA) in their four-game series against Quebec. In that series, the relief corps allowed just one of seven inherited runners to score.

JUNE’S FINEST: Jackals’ southpaw Isaac Pavlik was named the Rawlings’ Can-Am League Pitcher of the Month for June. In five June starts, Pavlik went 5-0 and tossed three complete games while posting a 1.66 ERA. Over 38 innings, the Rutherford native allowed just 29 hits, struck out 27 batters, and doled out just five walks. This marks the first CanAm League monthly award for Pavlik, who has taken home league Pitcher of the Week accolades six times during his seven-year tenure with the Jackals. New Jersey has won all eight of his starts this season.

NEW JERSEY vs WORCESTER - GAME-BY-GAME PAVLIK TAMES TORNADOES WITH SERIES-OPENING COMPLETE-GAME GEM Friday, June 10 - Yogi Berra Stadium

Isaac Pavlik needed just 98 pitches to fire the first complete game in the Can-Am League this season as the New Jersey Jackals opened their three-game series against the Worcester Tornadoes with a 5-1 victory. Pavlik, who improved to 3-0 win the win, threw 73 of his 98 pitches for strikes as he allowed just one run on six hits.

ZUERCHER DOMINANT AS JACKALS SUFFER SETBACK AGAINST TORNADOES Saturday, June 11 - Yogi Berra Stadium

The Worcester Tornadoes spotted Zach Zuercher an early lead and the southpaw fired seven shutout innings as the Tornadoes defeated the New Jersey Jackals, 10-1. Zuercher (3-1) allowed just four hits while striking out five batters as he improved to 5-1 in nine career starts against the Jackals. Albert Ayala pitched a perfect eighth inning before the Jackals broke through reliever Rick Asadoorian for their lone run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Mike Jones RBI single. Minicozzi, who entered the night with a league-best .411 batting average, finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Worcester first baseman Chris Colabello and designated hitter Nick Salotti each contributed three hits. For New Jersey, Jones went 2-for-4 with a double while second baseman Argenis Reyes went 2-for-3. James Leverton (1-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits over four innings.

JACKALS USE BIG SIXTH INNING TO RALLY PAST TORNADOES IN SERIES FINALE Sunday, June 12 - Yogi Berra Stadium

Trailing 4-1, the New Jersey Jackals sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning and scored six runs en route to a 7-6 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes in the rubber match of a three-game series. After Tornadoes’ starter Matt Smith turned in five solid innings in his best outing of the season, the Jackals jumped on the Worcester bullpen in the sixth. Against rookie Michael Gedman and Ryan Walfield, the Jackals poked six singles and took advantage of three free passes to take their first lead of the day. With Jackals’ closer Jeff Gogal on in the ninth inning trying to complete the four-out save, Worcester used an Alex Trezza hit by pitch, a double by Ryan Crespi and an RBI groundout off the bat of Alex Nunez to pull within one. The Tornadoes advanced Crespi to third and moved the go-ahead run to second, but Gogal slammed the door when Chris Colabello went down looking at a slider to end the game.

BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their recent eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 righthander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
