SETTING THE SCENE: The Brockton Rox, winners of seven straight games, visit Yogi Berra Stadium tonight to begin a three-game series that will conclude the first half. The Quebec Capitales (33-10) have already clinched the first-half title and secured a spot in the Can-Am League playoffs. In their only other meeting this season, the Jackals swept Brockton in a three-game series from June 24-26. The Rox are managed by former Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: Tonight’s starter, James Leverton, was tabbed Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week on Monday. In his lone start last week, the 25-year-old tossed eight shutout innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters in a 4-0 Jackals’ win on the road at first-place Quebec. Entering tonight, Leverton has tossed 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings. He is 16-3 over the past two seasons after going 10-1 in 2010 with three different teams within the Cubs’ organization. RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Following their series at Worcester earlier this week, the Jackals made several roster moves. New Jersey signed outfielder Nick Santomauro and released left-handed pitcher Ryan Kulik. The Jackals also traded outfielder Jeremy Slayden to the Rockland Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. Santomauro, a North Caldwell native, spent the past two seasons in the New York Mets’ minor league system after being selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Dartmouth College, where he was the Ivy League Player of the Year as a senior. In seven starts, Kulik was 2-3 with an 8.91 ERA. Slayden was batting .252 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs in 37 games. JACKAL BITES: • Jackals’ coach Ani Ramos celebrated his 50th birthday yesterday. • Shortstop Mike DeJesus is the only Jackal to start all 44 games at the same position. Over 10 games in July, DeJesus is batting a teambest .429 (21-for-49). • Myron Leslie leads the circuit with 37 walks (seven more than any other player) and Mike Jones ranks fifth with 24 free passes. Leslie also leads the league with a .457 OBP • Mike Jones is tied with four other players for the league lead with 39 RBIs through 44 games, putting him on pace for 83 RBIs this season. New Jersey’s single-season franchise

RBIs record is 77, set by Kevin Grijak in 2004. Leslie ranks second on that list after knocking in 75 runs in 2009. Jones has driven in just one run over his last seven contests and has gone four straight games without an RBI. JUNE’S FINEST: Jackals’ southpaw Isaac Pavlik was named the Rawlings’ Can-Am League Pitcher of the Month for June. In five June starts, Pavlik went 5-0 and tossed three complete games while posting a 1.66 ERA. Over 38 innings, the Rutherford native allowed just 29 hits, struck out 27 batters, and doled out just five walks. This marks the first CanAm League monthly award for Pavlik, who has taken home league Pitcher of the Week accolades six times during his seven-year tenure with the Jackals. New Jersey has won all eight of his starts this season.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST DAVIS HELPS JACKALS POWER PAST TORNADOES IN SERIES FINALE Tuesday, July 12 recap

Worcester, Mass. – Leonard Davis drove in four runs and Nick Giarraputo laced a pair of doubles as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the Worcester Tornadoes, 9-4, to salvage the finale of a three-game series on a hot and humid Tuesday night at Hanover Insurance Park. New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik improved to league-best 8-0, tying his career high for wins in a season, after allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 5 2/3 frames. Reliever Steve Fox followed with 2 1/3 scoreless frames before Jeff Gogal tossed a scoreless ninth to secure the victory. The Tornadoes plated all four of their runs behind the strength of a trio of home runs – two by first baseman Chris Colabello and one by designated hitter Nick Salotti – who each now have 11 this season. Trailing 1-0 after Colabello went deep in the top of the first, New Jersey plated the game’s next six runs to set the pace. In the top of the second, Myron Leslie led off with a walk on a 10-pitch at-bat and scored two batters later when Giarraputo ripped a double inside third base to tie the score. A Kris Sanchez RBI single made it 2-1 before Jordan Newton connected on a two-run home run to right field to extend the Jackals’ lead to 4-1. A tworun homer by Davis in the third inning gave New Jersey a 6-1 advantage. Colabello added his second blast of the night in the fifth inning, a two-run shot, and Salotti followed with a solo home run to pull Worcester within two at 6-4. However, the Jackals capped the scoring in the top of the eighth inning with three unearned runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Worcester second baseman Abraham Nunez mishandled a ground ball to allow Giarraputo to score and make it 7-4. Later in the inning, Davis singled home two runs to cap the scoring. After an off day on Wednesday, the Jackals return home to Yogi Berra Stadium to conclude the first half with a three-game series against the Brockton Rox beginning Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. In the series opener, New Jersey will send southpaw James Leverton (6-2, 2.12 ERA) to the mound against Brockton right-hander Mike Smith. Leverton, the two-time reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week, has tossed 19 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings while Smith, a Can-Am League All-Star last season, will toe the rubber for a Rox’ team that has won seven straight games. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com. Jackal Bites: Five members of the Tornadoes were ejected as manager Ed Riley, reliever Nick Serino, and catcher Alex Trezza were tossed in the top of the sixth inning and pitchers Zach Zuercher and Ryan Bicondoa were ejected from the bench in the top of the ninth… The season series between New Jersey and Worcester is now tied, 3-3… The Jackals are now 9-1 in games started by Isaac Pavlik this season... Pavlik extended his league strikeouts lead to 61… Worcester outfielder Alex Nunez had to leave the game prior to the top of the seventh inning after getting hit in the wrist by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth. Nunez was replaced by pitcher Shawn Gilblair, who was later pinch hit for by rookie pitcher Michael Gedman. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During a recent eightgame winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 4820. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 righthander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
