INSIDE THE SERIES: The Brockton Rox, winners of eight straight games, visit Yogi Berra Stadium tonight for the middle contest of a three-game series that will conclude the first half. The Quebec Capitales (33-11) have already clinched the first-half title and secured a spot in the Can-Am League playoffs. The Jackals are 3-1 this season against the Rox, who are managed by former Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner. Prior to last night, the Jackals had allowed just four runs over the first three meetings with Brockton in 2011. LAST NIGHT’S CONTEST: The Jackals equaled a season high with four errors as the Brockton Rox won their eighth straight game, 12-7, on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. With two-time reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week James Leverton on the mound trying to extend his streak of 19 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings entering the night, Brockton jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings. That was plenty of run support for Mike Smith (5-4), who picked up the win. For New Jersey, Jordan Newton homered for the third time in his last four games and Mike DeJesus and Leonard Davis each collected three hits. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: Southpaw Jon Kibler makes his third start of the season for New Jersey tonight. Kibler, a 24-year-old Maryland native, pitched well in his last start, surrendering two runs over five innings with four strikeouts and no walks in Saturday’s series finale at Quebec. Kibler was drafted in the 30th round in 2007 by the Detroit Tigers and spent the first four years of his career in the Tigers’ organization, advancing as high as Double-A Erie on two separate occasions in ‘09 and ‘10. His best season came in 2008 at Single-A West Michigan when he posted a 14-5 record with a 1.75 ERA in 23 starts. RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Following their series at Worcester earlier this week, the Jackals made several roster moves. New Jersey signed outfielder Nick Santomauro and released left-handed pitcher Ryan Kulik. The Jackals also traded outfielder Jeremy Slayden to the Rockland Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. Santomauro, a North Caldwell native, spent the past two seasons in the New York Mets’ minor league system after being selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Dartmouth College, where he was the Ivy League Player of the Year that spring. In seven starts, Kulik was 2-3 with an 8.91 ERA. Slayden was batting .252 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs in 37 games.

JACKAL BITES: • Jackals’ coach Ani Ramos celebrated his 50th birthday Wednesday. • Shortstop Mike DeJesus is the only Jackal to start all 45 games at the same position. Over 11 games in July, DeJesus is batting a teambest .453 (24-for-53). • Myron Leslie leads the circuit with 38 walks (seven more than any other player) and Mike Jones ranks sixth with 24 free passes. Leslie also leads the league with a .455 OBP. • With 40 RBIs through 45 games, Mike Jones is on pace for 84 RBIs, which would shatter Kevin Grijak’s team record of 77 set in 2004. • Five of Jordan Newton’s last six hits have gone for extra bases. 15 of Kris Sanchez’s 34 hits this season have been extra-base hits.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS’ DEFENSIVE WOES HELP RED-HOT ROX TO SERIES-OPENING VICTORY Thursday, July 14 recap

Little Falls, N.J. – The New Jersey Jackals equaled a season high with four errors as the Brockton Rox won their eighth straight game, 12-7, on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. With two-time reigning Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week James Leverton on the mound trying to extend his streak of 19 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings entering the night, Brockton jumped out to a 6-0 lead. With the help of a pair of first-inning errors, the Rox plated three runs (one earned) in the first inning to gain a 3-0 advantage. Brockton tacked on a trio of second-inning runs in the second to make it 6-0. The Jackals broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth when Leonard Davis led off with a double and scored on a Mike Jones sacrifice fly before Jones came plateward on a double to right off the bat of Jordan Newton to make it a 6-2 game. However, Brockton got a run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Shawn Williams to increase its lead to 7-2. The Rox extended their lead in the seventh inning when they plated four runs, highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Chris Valencia after a 15-pitch at bat. New Jersey fought back though as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh that scored Mike DeJesus and Davis. Then in the bottom of the eighth, they added on three more when Jordan Newton led off with his third home run of the season. Later, DeJesus drove in Chris Anderson and Argenis Reyes with single to cut the lead to 11-4. Brockton closed the scoring in the top of the ninth when Williams scored on a double by Valencia. Williams and Valencia combined to go 7-for-9 with five RBIs. Leverton (6-3) suffered the loss after pitching six innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) on a season-high 10 hits. Mike Smith (5-4) worked through six innings and gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five. The Jackals and Rox continue their three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends Jon Kibler (0-1, 6.30 ERA) to the mound for his third start of the season against Brockton’s Dustin Birosak (4-0, 1.69 ERA) in a battle of left-handers. Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at jackals.com. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
