YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: Bobby Blevins outdueled Isaac Pavlik as the Rockland Boulders handed the New Jersey Jackals a 2-1 loss to open up the second half of the Can-Am League season on Sunday evening at Provident Bank Park. The loss was Pavlik’s first of the season in nine decisions. All three runs scored in the fourth inning with Myron Leslie lacing an RBI single to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead before a pair of RBI singles by Scott Clement and former Jackal Jeremy Slayden in the bottom of the fourth gave the Boulders a 2-1 advantage. In the losing effort, Mike Jones finished the day 2-for-4 with a double as three of New Jersey’s five hits went for extra bases. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. CAMERON TO CLEARWATER: Right-handed reliever Dustin Cameron, who appeared in 11 games for New Jersey in 2009, had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies from the American Association’s Grand Prairie AirHogs on July 7. Cameron, currently in his sixth professional season, was recently assigned to the Advanced-A Clearwater Threshers in the Florida State League and has appeared in two games in his first affiliated action. RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Following their series at Worcester last week, the Jackals made several roster moves. New Jersey signed outfielder Nick Santomauro and released left-handed pitcher Ryan Kulik. The Jackals also traded outfielder Jeremy Slayden to the Rockland Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. Santomauro, a North Caldwell native, spent the past two seasons in the New York Mets’ minor league system after being selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Dartmouth College, where he was the Ivy League Player of the Year that spring. In seven starts, Kulik was 2-3 with an 8.91 ERA. Slayden was batting .252 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs in 37 games. On Saturday, reliever Jeremy Hunt left the team and New Jersey activated right-hander Stephen Clyne, who had been on the inactive list since opening day.
JACKAL BITES: • Shortstop Mike DeJesus, is the only Jackal to start all 48 games at the same position. Over 14 games in July, DeJesus is batting .409. • Myron Leslie leads the circuit with 40 walks (seven more than any other player) and a .451 on-base percentage. • With 41 RBIs through 48 games, Mike Jones is on pace for 80 RBIs, which would break Kevin Grijak’s team record of 77 set in 2004. Jones is batting a team-best .371 with runners in scoring position. • Five of Jordan Newton’s last six hits have gone for extra bases. A quad injury has caused Newton to miss New Jersey’s last two contests. • Leonard Davis has knocked in 11 runs in eight games against Rockland. Nine of his 12 hits against Rockland have gone for extra bases.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST BLEVINS OUTDUELS PAVLIK AS JACKALS FALL IN SECOND-HALF OPENER Sunday, July 17 recap
Pomona, N.Y. – Bobby Blevins outdueled Isaac Pavlik as the Rockland Boulders handed the New Jersey Jackals a 2-1 loss to open up the second half of the Can-Am League season on Sunday evening at Provident Bank Park. The loss was Pavlik’s first of the season in nine decisions. In the Jackals’ quickest contest of the season at two hours, 13 minutes, Pavlik (8-1) allowed just two runs on six hits over eight innings while turning in his league-leading fourth complete game of the season. Blevins (5-3) surrendered one run on four hits over eight frames, striking out four and walking one to earn the victory. All three runs in the contest came across in the fourth inning. In the top of the frame, Jackals’ shortstop Mike DeJesus led off with a hustle double to center, advanced to third when Leonard Davis grounded out to the right side, and scored on a base hit to center off the bat of catcher Myron Leslie to give the Jackals a 1-0 advantage. That lead would be short-lived, however, as the Boulders tied the game in the bottom of the fourth when the first four batters of the frame reached base against Pavlik. After shortstop Mike Richard led off with a single and stole second, second baseman Cole Kraft walked to put a pair of runners aboard. Catcher Scott Clement followed with a single to right and Richard beat Nick Santomauro’s throw to the plate to even the score. The next batter, former Jackal Jeremy Slayden, laced an RBI single to center to drive in what proved to be the gamewinning run. In the top of the ninth, Jackals’ designated hitter Mike Jones reached base as the tying run with a two-out single, but Rockland closer Adrian Martin escaped the jam when Nick Giarraputo flew out to the wall in right center to end the ballgame. In the losing effort, Jones finished the day 2-for-4 as three of New Jersey’s five hits went for extra bases. Jackal Bites: Isaac Pavlik and Bobby Blevins have allowed four earned runs or less in each of their 22 combined starts this season… Pavlik, who has compiled eight quality starts in 11 outings this season, increased his Can-Am League strikeout lead to 64 with three punchouts… Rockland closer Adrian Martin has saved 12 of the Boulders’ 20 wins this season... Jordan Newton missed his second straight game for New Jersey with a quad injury… The Jackals picked off a runner for the fourth straight game when catcher Myron Leslie nabbed Mike Richard off second base in the bottom of the first inning... The Jackals have dropped five of their last seven contests. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
