YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: The New Jersey Jackals (2821) built up a 5-0 lead over the Rockland Boulders (20-28) before the skies opened up in the middle of the seventh inning, giving the Jackals their first victory of the second half on Monday night at Provident Bank Park. Jackals’ starter Shaun Ellis tossed six shutout innings to pick up the victory. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. After the Jackals plated two runs in the fourth inning, Leonard Davis crushed a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to make it 4-0 befoer New Jersey tacked on a run on a Chris Anderson RBI single in the sixth. CAMERON TO CLEARWATER: Right-handed reliever Dustin Cameron, who appeared in 11 games for New Jersey in 2009, had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies from the American Association’s Grand Prairie AirHogs on July 7. Cameron, currently in his sixth professional season, was recently assigned to the Advanced-A Clearwater Threshers in the Florida State League and has appeared in three games in his first affiliated action. RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Over the past week, the Jackals have made several roster moves. New Jersey signed outfielder Nick Santomauro and released lefthanded pitcher Ryan Kulik. The Jackals also traded outfielder Jeremy Slayden to the Rockland Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. Santomauro, a North Caldwell native, spent the past two seasons in the New York Mets’ minor league system after being selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Dartmouth College, where he was the Ivy League Player of the Year that spring. In seven starts, Kulik was 2-3 with an 8.91 ERA. Slayden was batting .252 with seven home runs and 20 RBIs in 37 games. On Saturday, reliever Jeremy Hunt left the team and New Jersey activated right-hander Stephen Clyne, who had been on the inactive list since opening day.

JACKAL BITES: • Shortstop Mike DeJesus, is the only Jackal to start all 49 games at the same position. Over 15 games in July, DeJesus is batting .414. • Myron Leslie leads the circuit with 40 walks (six more than any other player) and a .451 on-base percentage. Leslie missed last night’s contest and will also miss tonight’s game due to personal reasons. • With 41 RBIs through 49 games, Mike Jones is on pace for 79 RBIs, which would break Kevin Grijak’s team record of 77 set in 2004. Jones is batting a team-best .371 with runners in scoring position but is batting just .191 in July. • Leonard Davis has knocked in 13 runs in nine games against Rockland after homering last night. Ten of his 13 hits against the Boulders have gone for extra bases.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST ELLIS SHUTS DOWN BOULDERS IN RAIN-SHORTENED CONTEST Monday, July 18 recap

Pomona, N.Y. – The New Jersey Jackals (28-21) built up a 5-0 lead over the Rockland Boulders (20-28) before the skies opened up in the middle of the seventh inning, giving the Jackals their first victory of the second half on Monday night at Provident Bank Park. Jackals’ starter Shaun Ellis tossed six shutout innings to pick up the victory. Ellis (4-1) scattered seven singles, but struck out three batters without issuing a walk. After spot starter Justin Fry struck out five batters in three scoreless innings in his first career start, the Jackals opened up the scoring when southpaw Ryan Knippschild entered in the top of the fourth. Nick Giarraputo tripled to center with one out and scored when the next batter, Jordan Newton, chopped an RBI single over the drawn-in infield to make it 1-0. An RBI groundout off the bat of Nick Santomauro gave New Jersey a 2-0 advantage. In the top of the fifth, New Jersey tacked on two more runs when Mike DeJesus laced a one-out single to center and Leonard Davis followed by launching his eighth home run of the season over the short porch in right field to extend the Jackals’ lead to 4-0. An RBI single by catcher Chris Anderson in the top of the sixth inning capped the scoring at 5-0. Rockland’s best chance to score came in the bottom of the third when the boulders compiled three hits, but Newton gunned down Cristobal Santana at the plate following a single to left field to keep the game scoreless. Knippschild (0-1), the newly-signed, originally-scheduled starter who ended up entering in relief in his Rockland debut after his plane landed late, was tagged with the loss after yielding five runs on eight hits in three frames. Jackal Bites: The game, which began at 7:06 p.m., went into a rain delay at 9:04 and was officially called at 9:32… The Jackals were without their starting catcher and cleanup hitter Myron Leslie, who will also miss tomorrow’s contest due to personal reasons… New Jersey is now 6-3 against Rockland this season. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
