YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: Trailing 10-1, the Jackals plated 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to push past the Rockland Boulders, 11-10, on Wednesday morning at Yogi Berra Stadium. The late-inning rally, which included eight two-out runs, was highlighted by Nick Santomauro’s first home run with the Jackals and a pair of two-run doubles by Kris Sanchez and Leonard Davis. Sanchez finished the day 4-for-5 as six Jackals recorded multiple hits. In his New Jersey debut, Mike Moore pitched two innings in relief and allowed one run to notch the victory and Steve Fox struck out two in the ninth inning to pick up his third save of the year. The win, New Jersey’s third straight, gave the Jackals the victory in the four-game series. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: Right-hander Bobby Gagg makes his second career start for New Jersey tonight. Gagg, a 24-year-old Hamburg native, appeared in 13 games out of the Jackals’ bullpen prior to earning the start on Saturday vs. Brockton, when he notched the win after allowing two runs over five innings without issuing a walk. In 14 overall appearances this season, Gagg has struck out 19 batters while walking just seven in 25.1 innings while holding opponents to a .244 batting average. Prior to Saturday, Gagg’s last start came as a senior in 2009 at Coastal Carolina University, where he was a Second-Team All-American as a junior and went 2610 over his career. In his two-year professional career, Gagg has posted a 2.19 ERA in 30 outings. The Federals counter with right-hander Kyle Putnam, a 23-year-old rookie out of Marist College who will make his first professional start. RECENT TRANSACTIONS: Over the past week, the Jackals have made several roster moves. New Jersey signed outfielder Nick Santomauro and released left-handed pitcher Ryan Kulik. The Jackals also traded outfielder Jeremy Slayden to the Rockland Boulders in exchange for a player to be named later. Santomauro, a North Caldwell native, spent the past two seasons in the Mets’ minor league system after being selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Dartmouth, where he was the Ivy League Player of the Year that spring. Kulik was 2-3 with an 8.91 ERA. Slayden was batting .252 with seven home runs. On Saturday, reliever Jeremy Hunt was released and New Jersey activated right-hander Stephen Clyne, who had been on the inactive list since opening day. On Monday, New Jersey signed righy Michael Moore, who went 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA in 18 starts for Traverse City in the Frontier League last season.
CAMERON TO CLEARWATER: Right-handed reliever Dustin Cameron, who appeared in 11 games for New Jersey in 2009, had his contract purchased by the Philadelphia Phillies from the American Association’s Grand Prairie AirHogs on July 7. Cameron, currently in his sixth professional season, was recently assigned to the Advanced-A Clearwater Threshers in the Florida State League and has appeared in three games in his first affiliated action. JACKAL BITES: Kris Sanchez has hit five of his seven home runs in July and is batting .373 with 18 RBIs in 16 games this month. Sanchez has raised his average 41 points over his last nine games... Mike DeJesus leads the team with a .392 average in July and is the only Jackal to start all 51 games... Nick Giarraputo (.330) and Myron Leslie (.329) rank sixth and seventh in the league in batting, respectively.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS PLATE TEN RUNS IN EIGHTH TO STEAL SERIES FROM ROCKLAND Wednesday, July 20 recap
Little Falls, N.J. – On a sweltering Wednesday morning at Yogi Berra Stadium, the New Jersey Jackals scored 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete an improbable comeback in an 11-10 win against the Rockland Boulders at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win gives New Jersey the victory in the four-game series. The Jackals entered the bottom of the eighth inning trailing by a score of 10-1, but they exploded for 10 runs on nine hits as five Jackals notched at least one RBI as New Jersey took the lead heading into the ninth inning. The eighth started out when Mike DeJesus and Leonard Davis smoked back-to-back singles. After a pop-out, Nick Giarraputo singled to load the bases before Kris Sanchez knocked in two runs with a double. After a strike out, Nick Santomauro followed with his first home run in a Jackals’ uniform, a three-run shot to right center to cut the lead to 10-6. Following the Santomauro home run, Chris White, Argenis Reyes and Mike DeJesus all walked to set the table for Davis, who smoked a two-RBI ground-rule double to left field to make it a two-run game. Myron Leslie followed with a single to center field that scored DeJesus and Davis to tie the game. After Leslie advanced to second base on the throw to the plate, Giarraputo singled for the second time in the inning to score Leslie with the go-ahead run, giving New Jersey the 11-10 lead. Steve Fox entered in the top of the ninth inning, and retired the Boulders in order to record his third save of the season. For the fourth time in as many contests this series, New Jersey plated the game’s first run when Jordan Newton singled home Sanchez, who had doubled to center, to give the Jackals a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Rockland immediately fired back though, countering with four runs in the top of the third. After a Mike Richard single and a pair of hit batters, Jeremy Slayden lifted a sacrifice fly to even the score at 1-1. Norm Hutchins then cleared the bases with a three-run double off the left field wall just inside the foul pole to give the Boulders a 4-1 advantage. In the sixth inning, Rockland plated five more runs to open up a 9-1 lead on a pair of RBI singles by Richard and Cristobal Santana and a three-run homer off the bat of rookie Cole Kraft. The Kraft home run chased Jackals’ starter Jon Kibler from the contest. Michael Moore (1-0) earned the win in his Jackals debut, throwing two innings of relief and allowing one run. Adrian Martin (3-1), the league-leader in saves, suffered the loss after allowing two runs in 1/3 of an inning. Kibler surrendered eight runs (five earned). Rockland starter Will Hassett Jackal Bites: Eight of New Jersey’s nine starters hit safely and six Jackals had multiple hits… New Jersey sent 15 batters to the plate in the eighth inning… Nick Santomauro’s eighth-inning home run was his first blast since September 4, 2009, when he played for the Brooklyn Cyclones… Jon Kibler tied a Can-Am League record by hitting his first three batters of the year… New Jersey stranded eight runners on base, including six in scoring position. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. After the Jackals plated two runs in the fourth inning, Leonard Davis crushed a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to make it 4-0 befoer New Jersey tacked on a run on a Chris Anderson RBI single in the sixth. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
