TODAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: LHP Isaac Pavlik (4-3, 4.57 - seventh start) FOR SUSSEX: RHP Mike Vicaro (3-1, 4.67 - sixth start) The Jackals send veteran southpaw Isaac Pavlik to the mound in the series-opener against the Sussex Skyhawks looking to avoid their third four-game losing streak of the season after being swept by the Worcester Tornadoes earlier this week in Massachusetts. Pavlik, who doubles as New Jersey’s pitching coach, has been dominant against Sussex this season. In five appearances (one start) against the Skyhawks, Pavlik has tossed 11.2 scoreless innings while allowing just five hits. Sussex is batting .128 against the New Jersey native this season. In his last start on Saturday, June 17 vs Brockton, Pavlik allowed just one run in 6.2 innings with four strikeouts to snap a personal two-game skid. New Jersey is 5-8 against Sussex in 2010.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 21 - WORCESTER 5, NEW JERSEY 4

Kevin Clark launched a game-tying two-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but Stantrel Smith’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the frame carried the Worcester Tornadoes to a 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Jackal and a sweep in the three-game series. With the Jackals trailing 4-2 and down to their final out in the top of the ninth, rookie Dan Betteridge drew a two-out walk against Tornadoes closer Rich Asadoorian before Clark pulled a two-run home run off back of the Holy Cross football scoreboard down the right field line. New Jersey closer Romas Hicks, who held Worcester scoreless in the eighth, loaded the bases in the ninth before Smith bounced the game-winning single up the middle on a full-count pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Tornadoes their second walk-off win of the series.

Edgar Estanga has appeared in 16 of 27 games since joining the Jackals on June 21, including 13 of the team’s last 18 contests... Abraham Nunez stole his 10th base of the season on Friday night, giving him double-digit steals for the first time since he swiped 20 bases for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds in 2000. Nunez leads the Can-Am League with 37 walks. He’s struck out just 21 times in 48 games... After collected just two extra-base hits over his first 27 contests, Jovan Rosa has three in his last four games... INJURY WOES

This season, six different players have spent a total of 66 games on the disabled list. Shawn Riggans is currently serving his second stint while catcher Zane Chavez has missed the Jackals last 18 games with a broken left hand. In Wednesday night’s 5-4 loss at Worcester, Mike DeJesus left in the bottom of the second with a lower body strain while Jovan Rosa departed with an injury in the ninth inning. When Rosa left the contest, Abraham Nunez, who did not start the game after being spiked in the left hand on Tuesday night, came in and played third base. Catcher Dean Forthun, who filled in for Rosa behind the plate on Wednesday, made his return to the lineup on Monday night after missing eight games with a separated shoulder. Jacob Butler has homered in back-to-back games after missing the final two games of the Brockton series and the series-opener against Worcester with a knee injury. In the rotation, A.J. Wideman has made just one start since July 5 with an injury and he was forced to leave that outing after just four innings.

2010 NEW JERSEY JACKALS GAME NOTES FAMILIAR FOES

Ed Ott is in his first season as the Skyhawks manager after spending the past three years as Jackals’ manager Joe Calfapietra’s hitting and third base coach. The 59-year-old Ott played eight seasons in the Majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels and was the Pirates’ catcher during their 1979 World Championship season. Ott has also spent four years as a coach with the Houston Astros (1989-93) and five seasons as the manager of the now-defunct Allentown Ambassadors, where Calfapietra was one of his assistant coaches. Ott took over the Sussex helm from another former Major Leaguer, Hal Lanier, who left the Skyhawks after two seasons to manage the expansion Normal CornBelters of the independent Frontier League. Lanier guided the Skyhawks to a league title in 2008, his first year as the team’s manager. Reliever Kevin Gunter, who went 8-1 with a 4.29 ERA out of the New Jersey bullpen in 2009, is in his first season with the Skyhawks.

FIRST HALF RECAP

The Jackals finished the first half of the Can-Am League season with a 19-27 record, half a game ahead of the last-place Worcester Tornadoes. Through the first half, New Jersey’s .270 team average ranked fifth while its 5.36 ERA was the highest in the circuit. New Jersey catchers threw out 24.7% of attempted base stealers, just slightly behind the Pittsfield Colonials for the best mark in the league. The Jackals played just 46 games in the first half due to a rain out on July 14 vs Sussex.

ALUMNI UPDATE

Since 2006, 22 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations. Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. • Infielder Argenis Reyes (2010) had his contract sold to the Boston Red Sox on July 2. He has been assigned to the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox. • Catcher Jordan Newton (2010) had his contract sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 3. He has been assigned to the Advanced-A Bradenton Marauders. • Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. • Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Valdez returned to Yogi Berra Stadium on June 21 to throw out the first pitch prior to the Jackals game against the Worcester Tornadoes. • Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason after spending 2009 in the Marlins system and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes, where he is teammates with outfielder Timo Perez. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26 and was named the PCL’s Player of the Month for May (.415-7-25 in 27 games). • Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees, where he has moved behind the plate. • Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

On Saturday, June 19 against Quebec at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals tied a Can-Am League single-game record when they turned five double plays. New Jersey recorded nine twin-killings in the three-game set.

BRUISED AND BATTERED

Over the first 20 games of the 2010 season, five New Jersey players spent a total of 41 games on the disabled list. Saturday, June 19 marked the first time this season that New Jersey didn’t have an injured player on the disabled list or inactive list. That list doesn’t include rookie OF Matt Stiffler, who injured his hamstring on June 4 and was released the next day because the Jackals disabled list was full.

This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.

MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR

Two current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes, who had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox on July 2, spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

FIVE-STAR QUALITY

In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

2009: A RETROSPECTIVE

Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (27-20) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its teamrecord 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.

JACKALS MANAGER JOE CALFAPIETRA

JOE CALFAPIETRA

CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME

MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON

MANAGERIAL CAREER

The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
