YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: Bobby Gagg turned in six solid innings and first baseman Kris Sanchez continued his hot hitting as the New Jersey Jackals defeated the New York Federals, 3-2, in the opener of a four-game series on a sweltering Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. The win was New Jersey’s fourth straight. Gagg won for the second time in as many starts since shifting from the bullpen to the rotation, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings. From there, the Jackals’ bullpen held strong as Jared Locke tossed a scoreless seventh and Jeff Gogal closed out the contest with a two-inning save. Sanchez finished the night 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored while Mike Jones and Argenis Reyes each collected two hits. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: Rutherford native Isaac Pavlik, the longest-tenured player on the New Jersey roster, makes his 12th start of the season for the Jackals. Pavlik suffered a tough-luck loss in his last start on Sunday at Rockland, allowing just two runs over eight innings in a 2-1 loss. Pavlik currently leads the Can-Am League in wins (8), strikeouts (64), innings pitched (79.2), and complete games (4) and ranks fourth in ERA (2.37). With his next win, he will set a new career high. The 31-year-old has gone at least seven innings in eight of his last nine starts. The Federals counter with 21-year-old Jim Schult, a rookie who will be making his third career start. Schult recently finished his career at Division III Eastern Connecticut State University, going 10-1 with a 3.31 ERA this spring while also batting .392 with 11 home runs. Schult went 19-2 on the mound during his college career. FEDERAL FACTS: The Federals, who will play all 94 games on the road, are comprised of the most talented players in the New York State League, a league that serves as the official developmental league of the Can-Am League. The NYSL has worked with undrafted college seniors and other unsigned players looking to continue their careers in professional baseball. The Federals roster is made up of mostly rookies, but they do have a few notable veterans including first baseman Eddie Lantigua and catcher Sandy DeLeon. Lantigua spent nine seasons with the Quebec Capitales where he hit 126 home runs before retiring in 2009. The Federals mark DeLeon’s 13th different team over a 10-year career.

ZACH IS BACK: On Saturday, July 30, the New Jersey Jackals will retire Zach Smithlin’s number in a ceremony prior to their contest against the Pittsfield Colonials. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. The Jackals’ Fireworks Spectacular will follow the game. Smithlin, a Fair Lawn native, patrolled the Jackals’ outfield for six seasons from 2004-09, spending more time in a Jackals’ uniform than any other position player in team history. The number retirement ceremony is part of Fan-demonium Weekend, which includes the Allstate Hat Giveaway (first 1,000 fans) on Friday night, Zach Smithlin’s number retirement and a postgame Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday, and Family Funday Sunday ($1 hot dogs, postgame kids run the bases, and a player autograph session). Any fan who buys a ticket to one of the three games will receive a free ticket to Fan Appreciation Day on August 31.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST GAGG SHUTS DOWN FEDERALS AS JACKALS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT Thursday, July 21 recap

Little Falls, N.J. – Bobby Gagg turned in six solid innings and first baseman Kris Sanchez continued his hot hitting as the New Jersey Jackals (31-21, 4-1) defeated the New York Federals (10-42, 0-5) 3-2 in the opener of a four-game series on a sweltering Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Gagg won for the second time in as many starts since shifting from the bullpen to the rotation, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings. From there, the Jackals’ bullpen held as Jared Locke tossed a scoreless seventh and Jeff Gogal closed out the contest with a two-inning save. Sanchez finished the night 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored while New Jersey first baseman Mike Jones and second baseman Argenis Reyes each collected two hits. New York opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when catcher Dan Coury lifted his first career home run just over the left center field wall to give the Federals a 1-0 lead. However, from there the Jackals would score the game’s next three runs to take the lead for good. The Jackals countered in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs without the aid of a hit. After two walks and an error loaded the bases with one out, Mike DeJesus drew an RBI free pass to even the score at 1-1. An RBI groundout by the next batter, Leonard Davis, put New Jersey on top 2-1. In the bottom of the fourth, the Jackals extended their lead to 3-1 when Jones laced a leadoff double off the base of the right center field wall and scored two batters later when Sanchez bounced an RBI single over second base. The Federals closed out the scoring in the sixth as Derrick Pyles reached on a leadoff error and scored later in the inning on a run-scoring single to center off the bat of Brad Jackson. In his first career start, New York’s Kyle Putnam allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out five batters over seven innings as he absorbed the loss. Jackal Bites: New Jersey is now 6-2 against the Federals… Jeff Gogal is now a perfect 8-for-8 in save opportunities as the New Jersey relief corps has converted all 13 of their save opportunities this season… Kris Sanchez has knocked in 19 runs in 17 games in July… Mike DeJesus has reached base in eight straight games at Yogi Berra Stadium. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. After the Jackals plated two runs in the fourth inning, Leonard Davis crushed a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to make it 4-0 befoer New Jersey tacked on a run on a Chris Anderson RBI single in the sixth. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
