YESTERDAY’S CONTEST: The New Jersey Jackals won their fifth consecutive contest – their fourth straight by one run – as they downed the New York Federals, 4-3, on Friday night. Isaac Pavlik (9-1) scattered a season-high 12 hits, but pitched well enough to pick up his league-leading ninth victory of the season. The win also gives Pavlik a new career high. With New Jersey leading 4-1, Pavlik allowed three straight hits to open the eighth inning as the Federals cut their deficit to 4-2. Pavlik walked the next batter to load the bases before giving way to Steve Fox, who preserved the lead after retiring all three batters he faced and allowing just one run to score on a sacrifice fly. Jackals’ closer Jeff Gogal entered in the top of the ninth and struck out the side in order to notch his ninth save in as many chances. The Jackals plated an unearned run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth against Jim Schult on a two-run single by Mike Jones and an RBI single by Kris Sanchez. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: Coming off his best outing of the season, right-hander Shaun Ellis makes the start for New Jersey. On Monday at Rockland, the 24-year-old Philadelphia native fired six shutout innings and allowed just six singles without issuing a walk to help the Jackals begin their current fivegame winning streak. Ellis, who pitched briefly with New Jersey last season and began 2011 in the American Association with the El Paso Diablos, made five relief appearances after being re-acquired by the Jackals on June 6 before shifting to the starting rotation. The Federals counter with 25-year-old righty Michael Streaman, a Westwood native who pitched at Montclair State and went 6-2 with a 2.91 ERA for the Red Hawks as a senior in 2009. FEDERAL FACTS: The Federals, who will play all 94 games on the road, are comprised of the most talented players in the New York State League, a league that serves as the official developmental league of the Can-Am League. The NYSL has worked with undrafted college seniors and other unsigned players looking to continue their careers in professional baseball. The Federals roster is made up of mostly rookies, but they do have a few notable veterans including first baseman Eddie Lantigua and catcher Sandy DeLeon. Lantigua spent nine seasons with the Quebec Capitales where he hit 126 home runs before retiring in 2009. The Federals mark DeLeon’s 13th different team over a 10-year career. The Federals have utilized a Can-Am League-high 67 players this season through 53 games.
ZACH IS BACK: On Saturday, July 30, the New Jersey Jackals will retire Zach Smithlin’s number in a ceremony prior to their contest against the Pittsfield Colonials. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. The Jackals’ Fireworks Spectacular will follow the game. Smithlin, a Fair Lawn native, patrolled the Jackals’ outfield for six seasons from 2004-09, spending more time in a Jackals’ uniform than any other position player in team history. The number retirement ceremony is part of Fan-demonium Weekend, which includes the Allstate Hat Giveaway (first 1,000 fans) on Friday night, Zach Smithlin’s number retirement and a postgame Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday, and Family Funday Sunday ($1 hot dogs, postgame kids run the bases, and a player autograph session). Any fan who buys a ticket to one of the three games will receive a free ticket to Fan Appreciation Day on August 31.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST BULLPEN HELPS PAVLIK TO NINTH WIN AS JACKALS MAKE IT FIVE STRAIGHT Friday, July 22 recap
Little Falls, N.J. – The New Jersey Jackals won their fifth consecutive contest – their fourth straight by one run – as they downed the New York Federals, 4-3, on the hottest night of the summer at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday. New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik (9-1) scattered a season-high 12 hits, but pitched well enough to pick up his league-leading ninth victory of the season after allowing three runs and striking out seven batters while walking just one over seven innings. The win also gives Pavlik a new career high.
BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May.
Jackals’ closer Jeff Gogal entered in the top of the ninth and struck out the side in order to notch his ninth save in as many chances.
WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton.
After the game went scoreless through three and a half innings, New Jersey opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Giarraputo, who led off with a single, advanced to third when Federals’ first baseman Eddie Lantigua misplayed a grounder off the bat of Kris Sanchez. The next batter, Nick Santomauro, lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 1-0.
MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386.
The Federals countered in the top of the fifth, evening the score at 1-1 when catcher Sandy DeLeon led off with a double to left center and scored later in the inning on a Jacob Rosenbeck RBI single.
POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. After the Jackals plated two runs in the fourth inning, Leonard Davis crushed a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to make it 4-0 befoer New Jersey tacked on a run on a Chris Anderson RBI single in the sixth.
With New Jersey leading 4-1, Pavlik allowed three straight hits to open the eighth inning as a Brad Jackson RBI single cut the Federals’ deficit to 4-2. Pavlik walked the next batter to load the bases before giving way to Steve Fox, who preserved the lead after retiring all three batters he faced and allowing just one run to score on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fifth, New Jersey plated three runs to chased Federals’ starter Jim Schult from the contest. Schult issued a pair of free passes to open the inning and later in the frame, Mike Jones pushed both of those walks across with a two-run single through the right side. After Schult hit Nick Giarraupto with a pitch, a Kris Sanchez RBI single with the based loaded extended the New Jersey lead to 4-1. With the bases still loaded and just one out, reliever Zach Woods entered for New York and retired the first two batters he faced to limit the damage and end the inning. Schult (0-2) suffered the loss, walking five batters and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. Jackal Bites: Federals’ designated hitter Derrick Pyles was ejected in the top of the seventh inning by home plate umpire Matt Criss after arguing a called third strike… The Jackals stranded 12 runners on base, one shy of their season high… New Jersey batters drew seven walks… Steve Fox has allowed just one of 14 inherited runners to score this season and has posted a 0.46 ERA over his last 16 appearances. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers.
