SETTING THE SCENE: Despite Sunday afternoon’s 5-3 setback at home against the New York Federals that snapped New Jersey’s six-game winning streak, the Jackals retain their hold on first place in the second half standings after taking three of four games against Rockland and New York to open the half. The Jackals return to Worcester for the final time during the 2011 regular season less than two weeks after they dropped two of three games against the Tornadoes on July 10-12. NATIONAL TREASURE: On Monday, the Jackals sold the contract of outfielder Leonard Davis to the Washington Nationals organization. Davis will report to Double-A Harrisburg, where he spent parts of each of the past three seasons. Through 52 games with the Jackals this season, Davis batted .317 with 36 RBIs and a team-leading nine home runs. The 27-year-old departed the Jackals as the Can-Am League leader with 46 runs scored. Davis spent his first seven seasons in the Nationals’ organization after being drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eighth round in 2004. In 2010, he combined to club 20 home runs between Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse. SEAN SMITH SIGNS: To fill Davis’ veteran slot on the roster, the Jackals signed former Rockland Boulders’ outfielder Sean Smith on Monday. Smith, a 28-year-old outfielder who in his 12th professional season becomes the Jackals’ most veteran player, batted .274 with four home runs, 28 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases in 46 games for Rockland prior to being released on July 17. Smith hit safely in each of his final six games with the Boulders. WHAT A RELIEF: Three New Jersey relievers (Steve Fox, Jeff Gogal, and Jared Locke) have appeared in at least 21 games this season and all three have an ERA of 2.60 or below. That trio has allowed just three earned runs in their last 37 combined outings. Gogal saved all three of New Jersey’s wins against New York this past weekend. Fox has yielded just one earned run in his last 17 games (a 0.45 ERA in 20.2 innings). The Jackals’ bullpen, which blew seven saves in 2010, is a perfect 15-for-15 in save opportunities in 2011.

SANCHEZ SIZZLING: In 20 games in July, Kris Sanchez is batting a team-best .397 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs. Sanchez, who was batting .198 a month ago on June 25, has raised his batting average 81 points over his last 24 contests. Sanchez went 7-for14 against the Federals this weekend. In the second half, he is batting .518 (13-for-27). ZACH IS BACK: On Saturday, July 30, the New Jersey Jackals will retire Zach Smithlin’s number in a ceremony prior to their contest against the Pittsfield Colonials. Smithlin, a Fair Lawn native, patrolled the Jackals’ outfield for six seasons from 2004-09, spending more time in a Jackals’ uniform than any other position player in team history. He will join Yogi Berra and former Jackals’ hurler Joel Bennett among the retired numbers at Yogi Berra Stadium.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST FEDERALS SHUT DOWN JACKALS’ BATS, STEAL SERIES FINALE Sunday, July 24 recap

Little Falls, N.J. – The New York Federals took the finale of a four-game series against the New Jersey Jackals, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium. The loss snapped the Jackals’ six-game winning streak. The Federals got on the board early in the top of the first inning as the first two batters reached on a hit and a walk before Eddie Lantigua launched a three-run home run to left field to catapult New York to a 3-0 lead. The Jackals cut the deficit to two in the bottom of the third by playing small-ball. Nick Santomauro walked, moved to second on a bunt single by Chris White, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Argenis Reyes and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike DeJesus. New York got the run back in the top of the fifth when Jacob Fabry hit the third consecutive two-out single of the inning to score Steve Detwiler and increase their lead to 4-1. However, New Jersey countered in the bottom half of the frame when Reyes launched a two-run home run after White walked. The Federals added on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Sandy DeLeon to score Tom Maloney from second base and extend the lead to 5-3. James Kukucka (3-4) earned his second win of the season against New Jersey after throwing six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. James Leverton (7-4) suffered the loss after surrendering four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. Alex Foltz notched his first career save after tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning. The Federals’ bullpen combined for three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The Jackals return to action on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. as they travel to Massachusetts to take on the Worcester Tornadoes in the opener of a four-game series. It’s a battle of left-handers as the Jackals send Jon Kibler (0-2, 6.86 ERA) to the mound to face off against Zach Zuercher (7-5, 5.03 ERA) for the Tornadoes. Cody Chrusciel has the call on the live webcast, beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com. Jackal Bites: The home run by Reyes was his second of the season… For just the second time in his last eight starts Leverton failed to pitch seven innings… Seven different Jackals had a hit… With his ninth-inning single, Kris Sanchez has now hit safely in each of the last six home games… The Quebec Capitales also lost, keeping New Jersey in first place in the second-half standings. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. After the Jackals plated two runs in the fourth inning, Leonard Davis crushed a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to make it 4-0 befoer New Jersey tacked on a run on a Chris Anderson RBI single in the sixth. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
