LAST NIGHT’S CONTEST: With the New Jersey Jackals leading 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Can-Am League home run leader Nick Salotti lifted a gametying home run for the Tornadoes to send the game into extra innings before Chris Colabello won it for Worcester, 3-2, with a walk-off blast in the bottom of the 12th inning on Thursday night at Hanover Insurance Park. In the losing effort, New Jersey starter Shaun Ellis hurled seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits. Both Jackals’ runs came in the second inning on Sean Smith’s first homer with New Jersey. JACKALS SWEEP WEEKLY AWARDS: On Monday, Jackals’ first baseman Kris Sanchez and right-hander Shaun Ellis were tabbed Can-Am League Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 25. In seven games, Sanchez batted a torrid .560 (14-for25) with three home runs and 10 RBIs. In two starts, Ellis picked up a pair of wins and allowed just three runs over 12 innings, striking out nine batters and walking just two NATIONAL TREASURE: On Monday, the Jackals sold the contract of outfielder Leonard Davis to the Washington Nationals organization. Davis reported to Double-A Harrisburg, where he spent parts of each of the past three seasons. Through 52 games with the Jackals this season, Davis batted .317 with 36 RBIs and a team-leading nine home runs. The 27-year-old departed the Jackals as the Can-Am League leader with 46 runs scored. Davis spent his first seven seasons in the Nationals’ organization after being drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eighth round in 2004. In 2010, he combined to club 20 home runs between Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse. SEAN SMITH SIGNS: To fill Davis’ veteran slot on the roster, the Jackals signed former Rockland Boulders’ outfielder Sean Smith on Monday. Smith, a 28-year-old outfielder who in his 12th professional season becomes the Jackals’ most veteran player, batted .274 with four home runs, 28 RBIs, and 12 stolen bases in 46 games for Rockland prior to being released on July 17. Smith hit safely in each of his final six games with the Boulders.

ZACH IS BACK: On Saturday, July 30, the New Jersey Jackals will retire Zach Smithlin’s number in a ceremony prior to their contest against the Pittsfield Colonials. Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m. The Jackals’ Fireworks Spectacular will follow the game. Smithlin, a Fair Lawn native, patrolled the Jackals’ outfield for six seasons from 2004-09. The number retirement ceremony is part of Fan-demonium Weekend, which includes the Allstate Hat Giveaway (first 1,000 fans) on Friday night, Zach Smithlin’s number retirement and a postgame Fireworks Spectacular on Saturday, and Family Funday Sunday ($1 hot dogs, postgame kids run the bases, and a player autograph session). Any fan who buys a ticket to one of the three games will receive a free ticket to Fan Appreciation Day on August 31.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS COUGH UP LATE LEAD, FALL TO TORNADOES IN 12 INNINGS Thursday, July 28 recap

Worcester, Mass. – With the New Jersey Jackals leading 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Can-Am League home run leader Nick Salotti lifted a game-tying home run for the Tornadoes to send the game into extra innings before Chris Colabello won it for Worcester, 3-2, with a walk-off blast in the bottom of the 12th inning on Thursday night at Hanover Insurance Park. In the losing effort, New Jersey starter Shaun Ellis hurled seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits. With former Jackal Ryan Lobban on the mound for Worcester, New Jersey opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Mike Jones lifted a one-out double off the top of the left field wall and Sean Smith followed with a two-run homer to left, his first in a Jackals’ uniform, to give New Jersey a 2-0 lead. That score held until the bottom of the ninth when Mark Minicozzi led off with a single against Steve Fox and scored two batters later when Salotti’s fly ball dropped over the left center field wall just out of the reach of New Jersey’s leaping left fielder, Nick Santomauro, to tie the contest. With one out in the bottom of the 12th, Colabello redirected a Jeff Gogal pitch over the right center field wall for the game-winning homer, his 16th of the season. Lobban pitched well for Worcester, surrendering just two runs on five hits while striking out seven batters over 6 1/3 innings. Tornadoes’ reliever Michael Gedman (2-1) contributed a scoreless 12th inning to notch the win while Gogal (1-4) absorbed the loss for New Jersey. BACK IN THE SHOW: Raul Valdes, who pitched for the Jackals in 2006, was called up to the major leagues by the St. Louis Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on June 23. Valdes, a Cuban defector, made his majorleague debut last season when he appeared in 38 games with the New York Mets. With Memphis this season, the 33-year-old had posted a 3-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 14 games since shifting from the rotation to the bullpen in mid-May. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their seasonlong eight-game winning streak, which ended on Wednesday, June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. After the Jackals plated two runs in the fourth inning, Leonard Davis crushed a two-run homer to right field in the fifth to make it 4-0 befoer New Jersey tacked on a run on a Chris Anderson RBI single in the sixth. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
