LAST NIGHT’S CONTEST: Jackals’ starter Jon Kibler took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but the Quebec Capitales set a Can-Am League record with five home runs in the bottom of the seventh, including four in succession to begin the inning, to salvage the finale of a three-game series against New Jersey, 11-0, on Thursday night at Stade Municipal. Quebec starter Matthew Rusch struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete-game, three-hit shutout as the Jackals were held scoreless for just the second time this season. THE CATALYST: During New Jersey’s most recent seven-game road trip (August 5-11), outfielder Sean Smith went 13-for-29 (.448) with 10 stolen bases and eight runs scored. In 17 games since signing with the Jackals on July 25, the former Rockland Boulder is batting .317 and is a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen base attempts. THE MAN ON THE MOUND: Southpaw A.J. Wideman takes the mound for the Jackals looking for his fourth consecutive win. In his most recent start on Sunday at Pittsfield, the 26-year-old Ontario native had a string of 19.2 straight scoreless innings snapped, but still picked up the win in an 8-4 Jackals’ victory. Wideman is opposed by former Jackal Ryan Lobban, who makes his sixth start for the Tornadoes after beginning the season with Newark. MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a leagueleading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-229 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.
TORNADO TIDBITS: After finishing the first half in sixth place, the Tornadoes (17-6) sit atop the secondhalf standings, 1.5 games ahead of Brockton, having emerged victorious in 13 of their last 15 games. Chris Colabello leads the Can-Am League in several offensive categories including batting average (.374), runs (64), and hits (107). Nick Salotti sits atop the league leaderboard with 20 home runs and 68 RBIs in 69 games. In nine games in August, the Worcester pitching staff owns a 1.66 ERA. CLOSING THE DOOR: New Jersey relievers have successfully converted 18 of 20 (90%) save opportunities this season. Last year, the Jackals converted just 22 of 29 save chances (76%). Four different Jackals’ relievers have saved games in ‘11.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST KIBLER DOMINATES EARLY, BUT POWER SURGE CARRIES QUEBEC TO VICTORY - Thursday, August 11 recap Quebec City, QC – Jackals’ starter Jon Kibler took a perfect game into the sixth inning, but the Quebec Capitales set a Can-Am League record with five home runs in the bottom of the seventh to salvage the finale of a three-game series against New Jersey, 11-0, on Thursday night at Stade Municipal. Quebec starter Matthew Rusch struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete-game, three-hit shutout as the Jackals were held scoreless for just the second time this season. Leading 2-0, the Capitales connected on back-to-back-to-back home runs to begin the bottom of the seventh inning with Rene Leveret, Bobby Wagner, and Seth Henry going deep in succession. Kibler fired the next pitch over the head of Quebec catcher Patrick D’Aoust and the benches cleared before D’Aoust homered later in the at-bat to chase the New Jersey starter from the contest. The Capitales tacked on five more runs against reliever Mike Petrowski to extend their lead to 11-0 thanks in large part to a two-run single by Sebastien Boucher and Wagner’s second blast of the inning. Kibler and Rusch combined to retire the game’s first 24 batters before New Jersey catcher Myron Leslie led off the top of the sixth inning with a single to become the contest’s first baserunner. Mike Jones walked later in the inning, but Rusch struck out the side to strand both runners and keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth, Patrick D’Aoust led off with a walk to break up Kibler’s bid for a perfect game. The next batter, Jeff Helps, pushed a bunt past Kibler and New Jersey second baseman D’Angelo Jimenez threw the ball wide of first base to allow both runners to advance on what went down as the first hit of the day against the Jackals’ southpaw. New Jersey skipper Joe Calfapietra was ejected after arguing his case for interference on the play. Two batters later, Goefrey Tomlinson singled to center to plate the game’s first run before an RBI groundout off the bat of Josh Colafemina made it 2-0 in favor of Quebec. Kibler (0-5) allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits over six innings, striking out four batters and walking one. JACKAL BITES: Joe Calfapietra was ejected by third base umpire Sean Hicks in the bottom of the sixth inning… Bobby Wagner became just the second player in Can-Am League history to homer twice in an inning with the other being former Capitale and current New York Federal Eddie Lantigua… With their victory, the Capitales avoided being swept at home. The last team to sweep the Capitales in Quebec City was the Jackals when they accomplished the feat from July 22-24, 2009 as part of a team-record 14-game winning streak… On a seven-game New Jersey road trip that featured five games that took at least three hours, 12 minutes to complete, Thursday night’s contest clocked in at just two hours, 18 minutes… Matthew Rusch fell one strikeout shy of tying the Can-Am League record.
BIG FISH: On August 1, southpaw James Leverton had his contract purchased by the Florida Marlins. Leverton heads to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. Leverton, a three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and the July Pitcher of the Month, was 8-4 with a 2.38 ERA in 13 starts. REYES SOLD TO CLEVELAND: On July 31, the Jackals sold the contract of 2B Argenis Reyes to the Cleveland Indians. The 28-year-old was assigned to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, where he finished the 2010 season. In 60 games with New Jersey this season, Reyes batted .306 with 12 stolen bases while serving as the Jackals’ primary leadoff hitter. Reyes, who spent parts of the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the major league level with the New York Mets, previously had his contract sold by the Jackals last July when the Boston Red Sox sent him to Triple-A Pawtucket before trading him to the Indians in early August. In 30 Triple-A contests in 2010, Reyes batted .303. NATIONAL TREASURE: On July 25, the Jackals sold the contract of outfielder Leonard Davis to the Washington Nationals organization. Davis reported to Double-A Harrisburg, where he spent parts of each of the past three seasons. Through 52 games with the Jackals this season, Davis batted .317 with 36 RBIs and a team-leading nine home runs. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their season-long eight-game winning streak, which ended on June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY 1970 - Curt Flood loses his $4.1 million antitrust suit against baseball, as Federal Judge Irving Ben Cooper upholds the legality of the sport’s reserve clause. Cooper does recommend changes in the reserve system, to be achieved through negotiation between players and owners. In fewer than six years, this recommendation would become a reality. 1977 - For the second straight day, Oakland’s Manny Sanguillen foils a no-hit bid. Today’s single is off the Orioles’ Jim Palmer, who settles for a two-hit 6-0 victory. Yesterday’s hit was off Mike Torrez, who finished with a 3-0 two-hitter for the Yankees. 1977 was the only season Sanguillen played with Oakland as he spent 12 years with Pittsburgh, six of them as a teammate of Jackals’ coach Ed Ott. 1987 - The Braves send veteran pitcher Doyle Alexander to the Tigers in exchange for minor leaguer John Smoltz. Alexander will help lead the Tigers to the American League East title by posting a perfect 9-0 recor
