SETTING THE SCENE: The Jackals, who enjoyed a day off on Thursday, are coming off a 4-2 homestand that included back-to-back shutout wins over the first-half champion Quebec Capitales on Monday and Tuesday nights at Yogi Berra Stadium.

CLOSING THE DOOR: New Jersey relievers have successfully converted 17 of 18 (94%) save opportunities this season. Last year, the Jackals converted just 22 of 29 save chances (76%). Four different Jackals’ relievers have saved games in ‘11.

MOVIN’ ON UP: During an eight-day stretch from July 25 through August 2, the Jackals sold three players to affiliated organizations. On July 25, outfielder Leonard Davis (.317-9-36 w/ a leagueleading 18 doubles in 52 games) had his contract purchased by the Washington Nationals and was sent to Double-A Harrisburg. On August 31, second baseman and leadoff hitter Argenis Reyes (.306-229 w/ 12 steals in 60 games) was sold to Cleveland and assigned to Triple-A Columbus. On August 2, three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and July Pitcher of the Month James Leverton (8-4, 2.38 ERA in 13 starts) was sold to the Florida Marlins and assigned to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Jackals boast the second-best home record (25-14) in the Can-Am League and are batting 58 points higher at home (.307) than on the road (.249). Nick Santomauro is batting .436 (17-for-39) at Yogi Berra Stadium but is hitless (0-for-21) on the road. Chris White is batting 161 points higher at home (.286) than on the road (.125) and has collected 19 of his 22 RBIs and all three of his home runs in Little Falls. Mike DeJesus is the only Jackal with a higher average on the road (.304) than at home (.290).

JACKALS INK JIMENEZ: The Jackals wasted little time filling their vacancy at second base after they sold Argenis Reyes to the Indians, inking eightyear major league veteran D’Angelo Jimenez to a contract on August 3. Jimenez, who has batted .263 over 641 major league games with seven different teams, made his Jackals’ debut on Wednesday morning and laced an RBI double for his first hit with New Jersey. Jimenez, a 33-year-old Dominican native, currently resides in West New York, N.J. INSIDE THE SERIES: The Jackals and Colonials meet for their second series in less than a week. Last weekend at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals swept a Saturday doubleheader before Pittsfield won on Sunday to salvage the final game of the series. The Jackals haven’t visited Wahconah Park since the first series of the season, when New Jersey dropped three of four games, including a pair of one-run contests. MYRON LESLIE: On New Jersey’s most recent sixgame homestand, Myron Leslie batted .524 (11-for21) and compiled four multi-hit games. Leslie also showed off his defensive versatility, starting two games behind the plate and his first four games at second base. CUTTING IT CLOSE: 14 of the Jackals’ 18 games in the second half have been decided by three runs or less.

TODAY IN JACKALS HISTORY: On August 5, 1998, the Jackals gained national notoriety by signing Pete Rose Jr., the son of baseball’s all-time hit king, “Junior” batted .424 in the final 12 games of 1998 before batting .300 with 15 homers in 1999. On August 6, 2004, shortstop Chris Rowan clubbed his 29th home run in a Jackals uniform, breaking Travis Bailey’s team record for career blasts. Rowan would connect on a franchise-record 23 homers during the 2004 season.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST TEMPERS FLARE AS CAPITALES TAKES SERIES FINALE FROM JACKALS - Wednesday, August 3 recap Little Falls, N.J. – The Quebec Capitales (44-19, 9-8) took the finale of a threegame series from the New Jersey Jackals (38-27, 11-7) 11-8 on Wednesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium in a game that featured three ejections, cleared benches, a grand slam, six errors and 23 men left on base. New Jersey opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when newly acquired second baseman D’Angelo Jimenez drove in Myron Leslie with a double off the right field wall. On the play Kris Sanchez collided with Quebec catcher Patrick D’Aoust that brought the entire Capitales team out of the dugout. Nick Giarrapputo later singled home Jimenez to increase the Jackals lead to 2-0. At the conclusion of the third inning, both benches cleared and came together along the first-base line, stemming from the collision at home plate. In the altercation, Jackals manager Joe Calfapietra was ejected, along with Quebec coach Pete LaForest. Immediately after the bench-clearing altercation, the Capitales struck for four runs in the top of the fourth inning as Josh Colafemina, Sebastien Boucher and Bobby Wagner all struck for RBIs. Then in the fifth, Quebec continued to pour it on with a five-run inning, highlighted by a grand slam off the bat of Colafemina to make the score 9-2. New Jersey answered right back in the bottom of the frame with five runs of their own. Leslie led off with a single and scored on a double by Sanchez, who later scored on a throwing error when Giarraputo reached on an infield single. After a walk to Mike Jones, Nick Santomauro cracked a double that scored both runners before New Jersey plated their final run of the inning on a single by Sean Smith that scored Santomauro to make the score 9-7. Quebec increased their lead in the top of the seventh without recording a hit. The Jackals infield committed three of their five errors in the inning as the Capitales scored two more runs to extend the lead to 11-7. The Jackals closed the scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning when Giarraputo came around to score on a Santomauro single before Mike DeJesus struck out with the bases loaded to end the game. Jeff Duda (5-0) earned the win after entering in the fourth inning and tossing 3 2/3 scoreless frames. Shaun Ellis (5-2) started for New Jersey and gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits over four innings to absorb the loss. Bryan Rembisz, Quebec’s starter, entered the game with the lowest ERA in the league but was chased after 4 1/3 innings and surrendering seven runs on nine hits. Jackal Bites: Prior to the game, the Jackals signed former major leaguer D’Angelo Jimenez and relief pitcher Cody Railsback… Ramon Nivar was also ejected in the top of the fourth for arguing a tag-up call at third base… The Jackals’ pitching staff streak of 22 2/3 scoreless innings came to an end in the fourth inning... Four Jackals notched multi-hit games.

BIG FISH: On August 1, southpaw James Leverton had his contract purchased by the Florida Marlins. Leverton heads to the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. Leverton, a three-time Can-Am League Pitcher of the Week and the July Pitcher of the Month, was 8-4 with a 2.38 ERA in 13 starts. REYES SOLD TO CLEVELAND: On July 31, the Jackals sold the contract of 2B Argenis Reyes to the Cleveland Indians. The 28-year-old was assigned to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers, where he finished the 2010 season. In 60 games with New Jersey this season, Reyes batted .306 with 12 stolen bases while serving as the Jackals’ primary leadoff hitter. Reyes, who spent parts of the 2008 and 2009 seasons at the major league level with the New York Mets, previously had his contract sold by the Jackals last July when the Boston Red Sox sent him to Triple-A Pawtucket before trading him to the Indians in early August. In 30 Triple-A contests in 2010, Reyes batted .303. NATIONAL TREASURE: On July 25, the Jackals sold the contract of outfielder Leonard Davis to the Washington Nationals organization. Davis reported to Double-A Harrisburg, where he spent parts of each of the past three seasons. Through 52 games with the Jackals this season, Davis batted .317 with 36 RBIs and a team-leading nine home runs. WE’RE GOING STREAKING: During their season-long eight-game winning streak, which ended on June 29, the Jackals outscored their opponents 48-20. In those eight games, New Jersey starting pitchers allowed just 11 earned runs in 53.2 innings, good for a 1.84 ERA. The Jackals’ longest winning streak last season was six games (July 22-28) when they swept a pair of three-game sets against Sussex and Brockton. MR. 400: Manager Joe Calfapietra collected his 400th regular-season win with the Jackals on June 20 in game two of a doubleheader against the New York Federals. Calfapietra entered the season with 386. POWER SURGE: The Jackals tied a franchise record when they launched five home runs in a 10-4 win at Rockland on June 19. Mike Jones and Jeremy Slayden each homered twice while Leonard Davis also left the yard. Twice before in franchise history had the Jackals tallied five home runs in one game: July 18, 1998 at Adirondack and July 28, 1999 at Massachusetts. New Jersey homered 10 times in the three-game series at Provident Bank Park. FOLLOW THE LEADER: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. SPRING FLING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
