TODAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: LHP Paul Fagan (0-1, 9.90 - third start) FOR SUSSEX: RHP Jimmer Kennedy (first start) After snapping their six-game skid on Wednesday morning, the Jackals send 25year-old Paul Fagan to the mound on Thursday for his third start with New Jersey. Fagan, the 2009 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year, allowed three home runs in his last start on Saturday vs Pittsfield en route to surrendering seven earned runs and 11 hits in four innings in a 10-7 Jackals loss. The Jacksonville, Fla. native is in his eighth season after being drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round out of high school in 2003. Jimmer Kennedy, who wrapped up a standout career at Rider University in 2009, makes his first professional start for Sussex. The Jackals are 9-10 against the Skyhawks this season with three meetings still on the slate after today on August 20-22 at Yogi Berra Stadium.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4 - NEW JERSEY 15, SUSSEX 2 (AT SKYLANDS PARK)
The Jackals pounded out a season-high 15 runs on a season-high 18 hits en route to their largest victory of the season as every starter recorded a hit. In the win, which ended New Jersey’s season-long six-game losing streak, converted infielder Chris Vasami hurled seven shutout innings in his second career start on the mound while left fielder Jacob Butler became the first Jackal to record four hits in a game this season. Butler crossed the plate five times in a 4-for-5 effort that included his team-leading 13th home run of the season. First baseman Jabe Bergeron drove in four runs and added his 11th blast of the year while outfielders Kevin Clark and Adam Godwin each collected three hits. Second baseman Travis Jones stole three bases. In the blowout loss, Sussex backup catcher Jon Gossard pitched the final three innings while closer Duaner Sanchez popped out in the eighth inning after entering the game in right field. The morning contest was New Jersey’s third game in a 19-hour span after the Jackals dropped a doubleheader at Sussex on Tuesday evening.

2010 NEW JERSEY JACKALS GAME NOTES A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
In keeping with their theme of an up-and-down second half, the Jackals followed up a season-long sixgame winning streak by getting swept at home last weekend (July 29-August 1) in a four-game set by the Pittsfield Colonials. In that series, the Jackals committed 12 errors (three in each game). They had committed just five errors in the first nine games of the second half. New Jersey tied a season high with 14 runners left on base in Sunday’s 9-7 loss. Jackals’ pitchers also surrendered eight home runs in the series. Pittsfield also outscored New Jersey 34-20 and outhit the Jackals 47-30.
CRUSHIN’ CARLOS
On Friday, July 30, the Jackals announced the signing of 28-year-old outfielder Carlos Sosa, a Can-Am League All-Star last season. In 2009 with the Worcester Tornadoes, Sosa batted .314 with 15 home runs. His average ranked fifth in the league while His 69 RBIs were fourth-most. He was also second in slugging percentage and fifth in OBP. In 2010, Sosa was hitting .278 with five home runs and five doubles in 31 games for the Utah-based St. George RoadRunners in the independent Golden League this season.

DOUBLE THE FUN
On Saturday, June 19 against Quebec at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals tied a Can-Am League single-game record when they turned five double plays. New Jersey recorded nine twin-killings in the three-game set.
LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKAL-APPROVED
This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.
Two current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes, who had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox on July 2, spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Jackals finished the first half of the Can-Am League season with a 19-27 record, half a game ahead of the last-place Worcester Tornadoes. Through the first half, New Jersey’s .270 team average ranked fifth while its 5.36 ERA was the highest in the circuit. New Jersey catchers threw out 24.7% of attempted base stealers, just slightly behind the Pittsfield Colonials for the best mark in the league. The Jackals played just 46 games in the first half due to a rain out on July 14 vs Sussex.
FIVE-STAR QUALITY
In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

2009: A RETROSPECTIVE
Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (27-20) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its teamrecord 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.

JOE CALFAPIETRA
CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME
MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON
MANAGERIAL CAREER
The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
