It’s time for a rest Rest can be a funny thing – it seems more like a gap, an absence of doing something. But whether or not you’ve had a rest can have a significant impact on the rest of your life. Maybe it’s true that God is in the gaps. When you read some of the ancient saints, rest takes on a more important role because it becomes a kind of a version of heaven. But rest, in the Hebrew, has a much grander sense than we often allow for. The word ‘shalom’ – which is often translated ‘peace’ – has a holistic sense of being at rest in contented fulfilment. Rest and peace go hand in hand with heaven. And this is something that many of us intuitively grasp. We’re well aware that we can’t keep ‘running on empty’, because it’s not good for us or the people around us. Rest, then, is vital to living as a human being.

And if we look at music there’s a strong parallel there. In music, the rests are as vital as the notes. If you miss the rests, you ruin the piece. The rests actually dictate its rhythm and structure. It’s not surprising, then, that our Maker goes to such great pains to impress upon us the need for rest. Not only does he set the right example by ceasing his labour on the seventh day, but he also institutes the Sabbath. In the Bible the day starts in the evening (and there was evening and there was morning, the first day), and this means that you actually start the day with a rest. The first thing that you do in the day is relinquish control of the world to God as you shut your eyes and go to sleep. And, in resting, you orientate yourself into dependence upon his grace.

When Lorraine Drew booked a trip to Austria with Oak Hall holidays in 1998, she never expected to meet the man she would eventually marry. Interestingly, the pair met before they even reached their destination. “We had a very long coach journey, which created a friendly atmosphere before we even arrived,” full-time mum Lorraine, 36, recalls. “Jon made friends with another boy on the trip and I was travelling with a girl friend. We all just got on very well and hung out together.” The advertised excursions didn’t disappoint, either. “They were well planned and very interesting, for example a visit to a salt mine,” says Jon, 31, who is

now a senior systems analyst at Dell. But it was the worship and community feel that impressed the couple the most. “It was nice to get together for worship in the evenings and great to meet friendly new people,” Jon explains. Lorraine adds: “We had to participate in cleaning tables and preparing food, which I wasn’t keen on initially, but it brought everyone much closer together. Being with Christians meant that if someone had a problem, someone would pray with them. We found that it was easy to make friends and have conversations with people.” After becoming good friends on the trip, Lorraine and Jon started dating and got married in 2002. They now have three children.
