Good time had by all!

tranded couple Peter and Pat Good ended up in a bad situation when they were hit by the collapse of travel firm XL Leisure. The pair turned up at Manchester Airport unaware that the holiday they’d booked was operated by the ill-fated firm – which had gone bust just days before the start of their break to Rhodes. But holiday firm Christian Guild stepped in to save the couple a sad return journey to their Lincolnshire home when it offered them a break at its Lindors Hotel in the Wye Valley.
Mr Good said: “We couldn’t believe it. We set off at 2am to get to the airport, only to find that the holiday was being operated by XL and it had gone bust. It hadn’t been booked through them so we didn’t know they were due to fly us out. “We spoke to our daughter who suggested we contact Christian Guild and they came up trumps. They recognised our problem and were only too willing to help out. We had a great time with Christian Guild. Their warm and friendly approach and their determination to help saved our holiday; it turned a disaster into a great break. Lindors was just what we needed.” Kevin Mantle, Managing Director of Christian Guild, said: “When we heard about the unfortunate circumstances Mr and Mrs Good found themselves in, we were only too happy to step in and help. A legacy of the vision are the ‘ jewel streets’ along the seafront – Coral, Garnet, Ruby, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond and Amber. Brockley Hall is also well placed for the understated Cleveland Hills and fantastic North Yorkshire villages and towns such as Whitby and Redcar, whose beach was transformed into Dunkirk for the recent movie hit ‘Atonement’. Years of legal argument, a Court of Appeal judgement and an 11-page government guidance document have left the UK travel industry, to say nothing of the travelling public, hardly the wiser. Does it really matter? Hapless tourists stranded at UK airports and on foreign beaches last year when XL Airways collapsed will now tell you that it was the issue that determined whether they had to fork out for another holiday or their flight home. Unknowingly, many curtailed their holidays and paid inflated airfares, when, in fact, they were protected by the CAA and could have continued to enjoy their stay in peace. Most of the XL unfortunates, particularly those who booked over the internet, had little idea whether their travel provider offered financial protection and even less idea of who to turn to when things went so badly wrong. Travel Agency Services was deluged with calls from stranded passengers who had booked elsewhere, seeking advice and alternative holidays. Regrettably, they were at the back of the queue. How then, if such confusion reigns, can you be sure your holiday is safe? The old fashioned travel agent still exists, looking after his regular customers, giving good advice and acting on their behalf when things go wrong.
