REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE

Dear Reader

Welcome to our winter issue of Analytical Reporter. By the time you read this, we will be moving away from the chilly weather and will be way past the shortest day of the year, which is definitely good news! Another piece of good news is the continued recycling efforts we see nationwide. We have to be eternally grateful for our waste pickers, SMMEs, co-operatives and the ever-sustainable producer responsibility organisation (PRO) Petco.

Newly released audited data reveals how South Africa's longeststanding producer responsibility organisation (PRO), Petco, drove the collection and recycling of post-consumer packaging last year.

Since 2004, the organisation has been administering the voluntary collection and recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and jars, and their associated labels and closures, on behalf of its members.

In 2023, which represents Year 2 of the country’s now-mandatory extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation, Petco achieved 98% of legislated targets set by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s (DFFE) for these products by volume.

The EPR regulations require that packaging producers – brand owners, retailers and importers – take responsibility for the full life cycle of their post-consumer packaging, so that it does not end up in the environment or landfill.

Petco achieved the required 64% collection rate and exceeded the 58% (60% achieved) recycling rate for PET beverage bottles placed on the market by its members.

These members currently include brand owners such as Unilever, Tiger Brands, Twizza, The Beverage Company, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, and retailers Pick’n Pay and Woolworths.

Last year, the organisation diversified its focus by welcoming new member Tetra

Pak and their customers, established an EPR scheme for liquid board packaging (LBP), and started to build a sustainable value chain for these cartons.

In one year, Petco achieved 80% of the legislated recycling target for LBP during what it refers to in its annual report as the set-up phase.

To stimulate the collection of this packaging, the organisation also grew the number of active buy-back centres in the value chain from seven to 32, and increased the price paid for LBP on the ground.

Chief Executive Officer Cheri Scholtz said Petco had been building a sustainable value chain for post-consumer PET packaging in South Africa for almost two decades and had propelled the nation towards a circular economy for this packaging. “We’ve now taken everything we’ve learned over our 19-year journey with PET and applied our experience to building a sustainable model for LBP. This is in line with our expanded vision to drive circularity within the broader packaging value chain.”

The combined results for PET and LBP also indicate that Petco’s collection and recycling efforts last year on behalf of its members:

Saved 64 100 cubic metres of landfill space

• Alleviated 314 500 tonnes of carbon emissions associated with virgin material production

• Provided infrastructure support to buy-back centres that helped sustain 910 employment opportunities and the livelihoods of more than 8 000 waste pickers

• Saw 77 recycling workshops and three accredited business training courses conducted nationwide, drawing almost 6 000 participants

• Supported 58 municipalities countrywide and two national and nine provincial departments with collection and recycling initiatives

Scholtz said the annual figures were about more than just statistics - they demonstrated how Petco had contributed to the economy, sustained income opportunities for ordinary South Africans, and prevented packaging from entering the environment.

Last year, Petco invested over R70 million in the collection and recycling value chain, enabling contracted recyclers to purchase R309 million in post-consumer packaging from collection businesses.

“We have a dedicated team on the ground in each province, working with corporate partners and various tiers of government, as well as waste pickers and collectors to advance the collection of recyclable packaging, particularly those of interest to Petco members,” said Scholtz.

She said the organisation had supported 100 collection projects countrywide – inclusive of waste pickers, SMMEs and co-operatives –with equipment such as baling machines, trailers, trolleys, scales and personal protective equipment to improve the quality and quantity of their collections.

“For us, the EPR targets are not a burden. They present a real opportunity to assist our members in advancing South Africa’s circular economy by strengthening every single link in the value chain – no matter how big or small.”

I’m sure laboratories play their part in the recycling process too. A good news story is always worth sharing.

Until next time,

Sami

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF LORD KELVIN

“When you are face to face with a difficulty, you are up against a discovery”

University at the young age of 22. He made important contributions to many areas of Physics, including electricity, magnetism and thermodynamics. In 1848, he proposed an absolute temperature scale, now called 'the Kelvin scale'.

His further contributions to science include the dynamical theory of heat; the mathematical analysis of electricity and magnetism, including the basic principles for the electromagnetic theory of light; the geophysical determination of the age of the Earth; and fundamental work in hydrodynamics. His theoretical work on submarine telegraphy and his inventions for use on submarine cables aided Britain in capturing a preeminent place in world communication during the 19th century.

He was knighted in recognition of his work in engineering and physics and was foremost among the small group of British scientists who helped lay the foundations of modern physics.

His success with coming up with theories about energy places him in the same position in 19th-century physics that Sir Isaac Newton has in 17th-century physics or Albert Einstein in 20th-century physics.

Just as Lord Kelvin was perpetually thinking outside the box, it could be argued that there is no more appropriate time for laboratories to think out of the box and embrace new approaches to solving their problems. Modern society in its global village is confronting laboratories with political unrest, economic hardship, skills shortages, technological advances, unsustainable natural resources, and challenges to traditional practice. Furthermore, measurement and testing can no longer be practised in discipline-specific silos of yesteryear. We are seeing the rapid linking and overlapping of scientific disciplines and the evolution of collaboration between different fields of measurement knowledge.

Unless measurement and testing laboratories adapt to this new reality, they may well be destined to obscurity and irrelevance. It is time to embrace an interdisciplinary approach to the science of measurement. It is time to start thinking outside the box. Join the National Laboratory Association at the Test and Measurement 2024 Conference and Workshop, which will be taking place from 16 to 18 September in Gauteng (venue still to be advised). The theme will be ‘Laboratories: Thinking outside the box…’

COLDBLOCK ENABLES SIMPLE AQUA REGIA DIGESTIONS IN A FRACTION OF THE TIME

Many mining samples do not require the near-full digestion that 4-acid methods provide. Sometimes, simple 2- or 3-acid digestions are all that is required for an accurate reading of key elements of interest, such as gold, copper, silver, and many other elements.

The ColdBlock Lab Services team have developed methods using ColdBlock that replace a wide range of simple digestion methods used in mining. With ColdBlock, digestions are completed with speed and safety, without sacrificing precision, accuracy, or repeatability.

ColdBlock's aqua regia digestion methods for gold analysis take less than 20 minutes, and ColdBlock digesters can accommodate samples sizes up to 30 grams. These methods have been confirmed with testing on over a dozen different certified reference materials

(CRMs) and are being used around the world - including leading global commercial laboratories.

Some customers have reported that digestion using ColdBlock, followed by analysis using an ICP-MS, results in fast, accurate, repeatable results and have allowed them to reduce or eliminate their dependence on fire assay. They report significantly shorter turn-around times, reduction in lead waste and employee lead-exposure-testing, and a ~50% reduction in cost per sample.

Having introduced numerous innovations over the years, the R-80 is the latest in a long line of revolutionary instruments. The R-80 maintains many advanced features that have become synonymous with the BUCHI brand but in a format that takes up less space, uses less energy, and puts less strain on budgets.

The compact R-80 saves valuable laboratory space and opens the world of rotary evaporation to individuals and institutions that may not have the resources for larger models or those requiring a more compact and cost-effective solution without compromising quality and efficiency.

The R-80 Rotavapor can easily be expanded

Precise and accurate measurements of moisture content

Laboratories are fast-paced environments with loads of continuous processes that all require accuracy and quality control. One of the features that affect quality control criteria is the moisture content of samples. If the moisture content of the sample is more than what is envisaged, this can affect the weight, quality and shelf life of the product or sample due to microbial activities.

According to the international standard for moisture analysis, the oven-drying method is used to perform moisture analysis by measuring the weight loss that occurs as the sample is heated. This method, however, is time-consuming and requires an analytical balance and desiccator. It is also prone to human error due to the high levels of handling and calculations involved, which may compromise accuracy. This method can take 2-3 hours, sometimes even longer, as there are many manual steps in the process.

However, this method can be replaced with the use of a moisture analyser. Precisa offers the XM 60 moisture analyser, which is compliant with the international standard of moisture analysis. The XM 60 moisture analyser is robust, simple to

operate and designed to analyse moisture content of very low sample volumes.

It is a compact instrument that does not require accessory equipment. The results produced are accurate and the process takes 5-15 minutes to complete. There is continuous determination of mass during the drying process, thus eliminating the need for complex calculations.

The added advantage of the XM 60 moisture analyser is that it is cost effective.

with the addition of a vacuum pump V-80/V-180, vacuum interface I-80/I-180, and high-quality glassware for different needs.

Available in three standard configurations: R-80 Standalone

• R-80 + Vacuum Solution V-80 with Interface I-80 for manual vacuum control

• R-80 + Vacuum solution V-180 with Interface I-180 for automatic vacuum control

The speed-controlled vacuum solutions offer near-silent vacuum generation and reduced bumping. The interfaces I-80/I-180 provide an easy means of vacuum monitoring and control and can be attached directly to the rotavapor, the pump, or a lab stand.

To address environmental concerns, an optional valve unit can control the waterflow and save resources by stopping after distillation, or by a timer.

Every part of the system has been intelligently designed for user convenience and effortless operation.

The central user interface can be rotated by 90° for easy access and has one central navigation control button. The smooth manual lift ensures effortless operation, while the cableless bath allows

hassle-free emptying and refilling. With a versatile heating bath with a maximum working temperature of 95°C and the ability to accommodate flask sizes of up to 1L, the R-80 is the ideal companion for chemical research.

The Rotavapor R-80 complements BUCHI’s comprehensive range of evaporation solutions. BÜCHI Labortechnik AG remains dedicated to offering solutions catering to all budgets and workflows of academic, pharmaceutical, chemical and biotechnological industries.

VACUUM FILTRATION IN THE LABORATORY

In a vacuum-filtration process, negative air pressure is created within a receiving flask, which results in a positive pressure above the sample that assists in pulling/pushing your sample through the filter paper. This is particularly useful when you need to filter fluids that have a higher viscosity level or there is a high density of suspended solids.

For a filtration test you will need the following:

1 x Buchner funnel

1 x filter paper/medium

1 x receiving flask

1 x vacuum pump

You will, however, require a specific vacuum pump with a few key characteristics. Enter the DryVac series of vacuum pumps. The DryVac is a piston-type, oil-free vacuum pump available in a range of models with capacities from 18 to 36L per minute and up to 120 mbar abs. The unit comes standard with a fitted moisture trap and vacuum regulator, leaving you with little concern over moisture passing through your pump, as well as the ability to regulate your vacuum to the level necessary for the application. INSTRULAB

Should the application contain any corrosive gases, there is also a chemically resistant version of this pump available in the ChemVac range. The ChemVac units offer similar performance with an electrically driven diaphragm. The main difference being that the internal components of the ChemVac are either coated with PTFE or made of PTFE, giving it chemical compatibility with most corrosive gasses.

Due to the simple nature of the DryVac and ChemVac range, they are basically maintenance free, with no oil or major components that need changing at set intervals. In the unlikely event of a component failure, it is a very basic procedure to strip the unit and replace the few working parts, which are all available in a standard repair kit.

Air & Vacuum Technologies (Pty) Ltd are the sole importer of these pump ranges and we carry a large stock of new pumps and spares kits. We can also offer overhauls of these vacuum pumps, as well as most other brands.

Vacuum and leak detection solutions from Pfeiffer Vacuum are integrated into such systems and help meet strict requirements. It is essential to achieve the required cycle time and deliver highly reproducible battery cell testing.

These systems make it possible to quantify and localize even the smallest of leaks.

Any such leaks can be eliminated rapidly in a downstream production stage. On the basis of the test results that are obtained, the geometries of the batteries can be changed, and improvements made to

production methods and workflows. The benefits this brings include improved quality, higher yields, and savings in production and testing costs.

Essential leak detection and vacuum solutions from a single source Pfeiffer Vacuum stood out with its wealth of expertise in the field of leak testing and vacuum technology. Visitors to the Battery Show in Stuttgart were able to find out about leak detectors such as the ASI 35 as well as the GSD 350 quadrupole mass spectrometer.

Mass spectrometers help to analyse the composition of any gases that develop. This allows conclusions to be made not only about the chemical processes but also about the quality of the cells. This is relevant for the battery formation stage. The Pfeiffer Vacuum portfolio is rounded off with vacuum pumps and vacuum components. These are known for their reliability at every stage of the production of lithium-ion batteries. The pump technology incorporated in the HiScroll ATEX offers enhanced explosion protection due to its safe structural design, hermetic seal and temperature monitoring.

Weighing cells are employed in a variety of sectors and workplaces despite being barely noticeable. The weighing cell is crucial to accurately determining mass, whether it is used in laboratory balances, industrial scales, or conveyor belt systems.

Traditional electromagnetic force compensation (EMFC) weighing cells are a dependable technology that have been around for a long time. It can be very difficult to put up this weighing cell because it has so many distinct interdependent pieces, depending on the design plan and the necessary accuracy.

The PHASTblocTM is a novel hybrid weighing cell type technology (Precisa Hybrid Advanced Sensor Technology). Three monolithic functional layers make up its structure. The chassis is manufactured using the extrusion process rather than being milled or cut from a single solid block of aluminium as per the norm. This limits the strength of the top layer to what is necessary and lowers the amount of energy needed to produce basic materials.

The manufacturer can receive the raw material in one shipment, and the extrusion process enables an excellent material yield, leading to a good material utilisation grade (70 to 75%). Each of the two stronger layers is finished separately.

Additionally, here, production procedures and component sizes are optimised while, once more, resource and energy usage is kept to a minimum. Whereas pure monolithic systems have limitations, the PHASTblocTM system can be built up to be used for heavier

The TSX Series ULT platform offers medical device units to store and preserve blood and blood products at freezing temperatures between -40°C to -86°C for users operating in GMP or qualified environments. By obtaining ISO Class 5.5 cleanroom designation for TSX Universal Series ULT freezers, cell and gene therapy, customers can have confidence in the cleanliness and control of their storage environments. In addition, the units feature simplified software updates, built-in accessory power, and rapid entry times.

weight loads and greater platform sizes (for example, in the industrial sector).

Since assembly and disassembly are intuitive, highly qualified technicians are not necessary. This enables quick repairs and the replacement of only the damaged components. This improves the long-term viability of balances using this kind of weighing cell. inqaba biotec has been a trusted partner and distributor of quality instruments for over 20 years, bringing in cutting-edge technologies on African soil to realise our visions and aims.

MATERIALS TESTING & ANALYSIS

Helium Leak Detection

A helium leak detector is an instrument used to detect and locate small leaks. It typically uses a vacuum chamber and a sealed container filled with helium. The detector can identify leaks to 5x10 -12 mbar*L/s. There are two common styles of helium leak testing: ‘sniffing’ and ‘spraying’. In ‘sniffing’, a probe is passed across the part to determine if there is helium escaping the test subject. In ‘spraying’, helium is sprayed over potential leak points to determine if helium is entering the chamber, which is under vacuum. The tracer gas, helium, is introduced to a test part that is connected to the leak detector. The detection range of helium in vacuum tests lies between 10 -2 and 10 -13 Pa · m 3/s.

OMNIS – THE BEST TITRATION AUTOMATION AND SOFTWARE MONEY CAN BUY

Save up to 64% of time by performing four titrations in parallel

The OMNIS platform includes an x-y-z sample robot that can accommodate up to 175 samples on a smaller footprint. It makes a substantial difference in terms of footprint to accommodate 175 samples on the square design of a modular x-y-z system versus distributing the same number of samples across two or even three discrete autosamplers with turntables. The amount of benchspace saved with the new titration platform is considerable.

As the capacity of turntable sample changers is inherently limited, pushing the limit used to mean investing in another autosampler and a titrator, possibly more, depending on the sample volume. Not so with the OMNIS platform. The OMNIS Sample Robot can be scaled up module by module from size S to M to L, all connected to the same titration stand.

Fully automated parallel titrations at four workstations means getting the same number of samples analysed for the same parameters up to three times faster than by sequential analysis. The titrations performed at four workstations can be all of the same kind or different types; Omnis can be programmed to handle any scenario.

METROHM IC ACCEPTED BY USP

Cooperation with USP has resulted in modernisation of numerous monographs

The United States Pharmacopeia (USP) has modernised a substantial number of existing monographs to include ion chromatography (IC) methods for numerous pharmaceutical assays of APIs, as well as analysis of impurities and excipients. Metrohm has cooperated with USP in this project as a partner, and several of these monographs have been validated with Metrohm instruments and columns.

USP has embarked on a global initiative to modernise many existing monographs across all compendia.

In this context, numerous titrations, ion measurements, and other wet chemistry methods have been substituted by IC methods validated with instruments and columns from Metrohm. As a result, companies from the pharmaceutical industry can now replace their current methods with more modern IC methods, making their daily routine analytics safer and more efficient.

Companies eager to modernise their pharmaceutical analysis are supported by Metrohm in making this change, all the way from consultation to implementation and method validation. More information and a list of USP monographs validated with Metrohm IC instruments is available from a dedicated hub on the Metrohm website.

AB-INBEV ASSURES BEER QUALITY

WITH A METROHM

AB-InBev invested in a fully automated Metrohm 930 Compact IC Flex for the determination of low levels (ppm) of ammonia in beer. The system is used to ensure the quality of beer is not compromised after CIP processes and prior to bottling.

To save AB-InBev time and money, this cation IC system was fitted with two unique Metrohm Inline Sample Preparation Techniques, viz. Inline Automatic Dilution and Inline Ultrafiltration.

Inline Ultrafiltration is a fast and economical alternative to manual filtration, as a single filter with a pore size of 0.2µm can be used for 100 or more samples. The Metrohm 930 Compact Flex IC system allows for the automatic inline dilution of each sample or standard, thereby preventing overloading of the analytical column, resulting in a longer lifespan of the column.

The versatility of the powerful MagIC Net IC is seen by the interim preparation of samples while the current sample is
