It has been fascinating to observe how suppliers have challenged themselves to elevate their marketing efforts, as seen in the thoughtful design of their stands and engaging activities that encouraged interaction with show delegates. The buying groups have been administratively sound in how they ensured that such events are worthwhile and a fruitful exercise for their members and suppliers. With projections predicting steady growth for the hardware industry in 2025, the positivity and support that suppliers have shown at the shows truly sets our sights on great expectations across the industry for next year. Paint Sales Grow Steadily, Tapes offer untapped opportunities for Retailers

The September issue of DIY & Industrial Trade News explored the Padlock Market, a significant segment for hardware retailers. In this edition, Aquidneck shifts focus to paint sales growth and the retail potential of tapes - an often overlooked product range where consumer price awareness is low, presenting a unique opportunity for retailers.

Aquidneck’s findings will be featured in a series of articles by DIY & Industrial Trade News, offering monthly updates across various hardware categories.

In the first three graphs, the overall paint market has indicated noticeable growth, with the unit growth rate indicating essential stability compared to the same period last year. From the fourth graph, we look at different tapes used for various applications as well as their overall growth contribution in percentage toward the Tapes market.

Duct tape represents 9% of the value contribution and 7% in units of tapes total. It is usually silver in colour although other variants are available and made of cloth mesh coated in a waterproof material. It is aimed at plumbing and household repairs but as the saying goes: duct tape holds the world together. The most popular size is 48mmx25m which generates 48% of the sales in 2024 YTD, this types retails on average at R70 depending on the brand. The second most popular size is 48mmx45m at 16% followed by 48mmx40m at 10%. In total the 48mm bracket represents 85% of all the duct tape sales. Other popular width segments include 50mm and occasionally 19mm.

The price progression of masking tape is extremely linear aligned to their respective sizes with thinner variants (12mm or 18mm) retailing around or below the R20 mark. The 36mm tapes retail above the R40 mark on average with 48mm jumping over the R50 border. Unique types with 50mm width or longer than the 40m standard can easily reach higher price points well above the market average for masking tapes. However, their sales contribution is small but indicative of requiring a reasonably deep product range from a retail perspective.

Insulation tape as the name suggests is meant to insulate electrical wires or other materials which conduct electricity. They come in a wide variety of colours, generally made from PVC because it stretches well and is long-lasting. Insulation tapes make up 10% of the sales volume and around 5% of the sale value of tapes. The size is not as relevant as other tape types with 19mmx20m making up 52% of the volume, 19mmx10m at 34% followed by 20mmx20m at 8%. These three sizes combined represent 94% of the sales. While this implies a narrow range the reality is different because every single size comes in different colours expanding the scope of insulation tapes significantly.

Masking tapes have the primary purpose of protecting a surface from contamination during the coating or painting process. They are generally paper backed with a mildly sticky adhesive and are meant for temporary use only. Within the tape bracket they generated 27% of the value and 34% of the volume contribution in July. Masking tapes come in a large variety of sizes; however, the most popular segments are extremely stable month-on-month with the 40m length varieties dominating. The most popular size is 18mmx40m representing 42% of the sales, followed by 36mmx40m at 24%, 48mmx40m at 15% and then 18mmx40m at 12%. All other sizes combined only contribute 7% to the total volume of masking tapes.

Double-sided tapes are any pressure sensitive tapes with coated adhesive on both sides. These tapes are generally positioned between the objects, without being seen, rather than overlaying them. Due to vague definition and a large variety of sub-types the product range of double-sided tapes is very large. They generally provide 9% of the value and 6% of the volume for the tape’s product group. The most popular size is 18mmx01m at 30% followed by 24mmx01m at 19% and then 19mmx01.5m at 10%. However, because the use of double-sided tapes is extremely specific the product range is factually massive, all other sizes combined generate 41% of the sales in the year-to-date requiring significant shelf space.

SIKA completeS ROOF REPAIR IN KZN

When it comes to home improvement, nothing beats the satisfaction of a well waterproofed roof – especially when that job involves a leak-free, shiny new roof. That’s exactly what happened at a home in the prestigious Victoria Country Club in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, where a failed torch-on membrane threatened the structural integrity of the building. But with the help of Sika’s innovative products, the roof was not only repaired but revitalised, setting a new standard for durability and quality.

THE CHALLENGE: A FAILING TORCH-ON MEMBRANE

Roofs endure a lot – from relentless sun exposure to heavy rain – and over time, even the best materials can start to fail.

This Victoria Country Club home faced a dilemma when its torch-on membrane began to show signs of wear and tear, leading to leaks and potential structural damage. The initial challenge was the membrane’s poor condition, necessitating its complete removal. The second issue was the incorrect roof slope, which hindered proper water drainage. Given the high stakes, finding an effective solution was essential to prevent further complications.

THE SOLUTION: A FULL SIKA SYSTEM

Once the roof was stripped and prepared, the first step was to build up all the low-lying areas to ensure the flow and fall was in the right direction towards the water outlets. This was achieved using Sika’s Sikafloor-200 Level. First, Sikafloor-01 Primer was applied to enhance the adhesion of the self-levelling screed and address the substrate’s absorbency. Sikafloor-01 Primer is a one-part, water-based synthetic resin concentrate designed to improve adhesion and reduce absorbency.

After the primer had dried, Sikafloor-200 Level was applied as a high-build, polymermodified cementitious floor levelling compound. This product helps to build up the low-lying areas, providing a smooth finish with reduced shrinkage. The screed was allowed to fully cure for three days before the waterproofing system was applied. The waterproofing process began with a primer layer of Sikalastic-560, diluted with 10% water. This liquid-applied waterproofing membrane, combined with the Reemat reinforcement mat, offers exceptional protection. It is ecofriendly, polyurethane-based, and features high elasticity and crack-bridging properties. The product is ready to use, cold-applied, and ensures a seamless finish.

New distribution agreement to boost bolting

Bolt and Engineering Distributors (B.E.D.) Group is very pleased to announce its new distribution agreement with torque and tensioning company Bolt Torque, which has a comprehensive range of manual, hydraulic, electric and battery bolt torque and bolt tensioning solutions.

This strategic partnership was announced just ahead of Electra Mining 2024, where Bolt Torque and their principals, PLARAD Torque and Tension Systems from Germany, exhibited. It marks a significant addition to B.E.D.’s industrial product and solutions portfolio, enhancing its ability to provide cutting-edge bolting solutions to a diverse range of industry sectors, including ship repair, wind farms, oil and gas, and mining. Mike Giltrow, CEO of B.E.D. expresses his enthusiasm for this exciting collaboration: “As a leading fastener supplier to industry for the past four decades, we have naturally always recognised the importance of bolt torqueing and tensioning. Existing and potential customers can expect several specific benefits from B.E.D.’s distribution of Bolt Torque’s offerings: “B.E.D.’s reputation for quality and service will now extend to torqueing and tensioning opportunities nationwide,” says Giltrow. “We will therefore be adding to the quality of our fasteners by ensuring they are correctly tightened – avoiding problems like overtightening – which can lead to failures. Factors such as lubrication and galvanising can also affect torque values, and our experts will guide customers through these considerations.”

STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE AT ELECTRA MINING

Regarding the strategic importance of this collaboration for B.E.D. in the context of the Electra Mining exhibition, Giltrow notes that the focus is aimed at the mining sector, but it is also presented an excellent opportunity to introduce Bolt Torque – and our collaboration with them – to a wider industrial target market.”

This includes force calibration for torque tools up to 20 000Nm, as well as single-stage and multi-stage tensioners, measuring gauges, and a wide range of electronic and measuring devices.

pratley products –a winning solution for on-the-go repairs at dakar rally

When Wessel Bosman drove across Africa in 2016 in a Ford F250, little did he know he would end up stranded in a remote location and in extreme temperatures following a gasket head problem. Luckily, Bosman had Pratley Putty and Pratley Steel Quickset on hand and which were ideal for making repairs under such arduous conditions.

Bosman is no stranger to such situations, having competed in the famous Dakar Rally four times . “I am not that good a rider; just crazy,” he says modestly. As a Lesotho motorcycle racer of South African origin, he entered Dakar 2015 after impressing the organisers by riding from Cape Town to Egypt to compete in the Pharoah’s rally, where he placed tenth after 17 000 km of hard riding.

After retiring from the Dakar 2015 rally due to injuries, the Ford F250 was shipped to the Dakar Organisation headquarters in Paris, France, and then moved from there to Italy by Bosman. He then thought it a great adventure to drive it down

through north, west, and mid Africa, including the Congo, Angola, South Africa and finally Lesotho for a tally of 21 countries.

“When embarking on an adventure or a rally, most people plan for any eventuality. However, a head gasket is not normally part of your planning,” says Bosman. He adds that he always has Pratley Steel Quickset and Pratley Putty on hand, even on his bike. “These products can repair almost everything and allow you to reach your destination where you can replace an oil pipe, radiator, or a hole in the sump.”

Bosman became stranded at the border post between Morocco and Mauritania, when he discovered that

the head gasket had developed a serious hole where the compression pushed the gasses into the water-cooling port. He used Pratley Steel Quickset to fill the steel ring in the gasket (the rings around the pistons), followed by Pratley Putty to block the damaged water port in the head cylinders and the port in the block.

The gasket was put back, and some Pratley Putty rolled into a cylindrical form was placed in the slot of the water port between the head and the block. “I then told my road assistant that we now had 25 minutes to fasten that head as good as we could to spread the Pratley Putty to counter any unforeseen omissions in the roadside repair job.”

About 16 000km later, Bosman concluded his journey at the AfriSki resort, having only encountered a single flat tyre during that extraordinary distance. This marked the end of the adventure that began 24 000 km and 84 days earlier when he left Italy for Southern Africa. Bosman, the founder of the AfriSki resort laughingly said, “Yes, I had to rebuild the engine of the Ford F250, but now that Ford pushes the snow from the roads for the people to get to Afriski, and all the towns and mines in Lesotho!”

Pratley Putty is a versatile epoxy putty that can be moulded and shaped to fill gaps, cracks, and holes. It cures to a hard, durable finish and adheres well to a variety of surfaces, including metal, explains Mark Bell, national sales and marketing manager at Pratley Adhesives. On the other hand, Pratley Steel is a high-strength adhesive designed specifically to bond metal surfaces. It creates a strong and durable bond that can withstand high temperatures and extreme conditions. For the type of gasket head repair that Bosman and his team had to complete on the fly, preparation is important. Simply clean the damaged area thoroughly to remove any debris, oil, or grease. Also ensure that the surface is dry before going ahead with the repair. Use Pratley Putty to fill in any cracks, holes, or gaps in the gasket head.

Mould the putty to match the shape of the surrounding area and ensure that it is

firmly pressed into place.

Curing time, which is temperature dependent, is important to allow it to harden for a specified amount of time. “After the repair is complete and the adhesives have fully cured, it is a good idea to test the gasket head to ensure that it is functioning properly and that the repair holds up under pressure,” notes Bell.

Bosman says he is familiar with the famous reputation of Pratley’s products. Having travelled to over 80 countries to date, either via vehicle or motorbike, he has always carried Pratley Putty and Pratley Steel with him on his trips in case of any emergency.

When Bosman returned the Ford 250 for manufacturer specification maintenance and repair, the technicians were so impressed by the effectiveness of Pratley Putty and Pratley Steel Quickset under such unique circumstances that they encouraged him to contact the company itself about his story.

“Our products are world-class and are renowned in in terms of performance and quality. Pratley Putty in particular is the only South African manufactured product to have gone to the Moon, so we were proud to learn about Wessel and his use of our products at the Dakar Rally,” says Bell. As to his future plans, Bosman concludes: “You never know. Life is a journey that continues.”

After a five-year hiatus, the Bosch Power Tool Roadshow made its long-awaited return in 2024, marking the first event since the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Held across three major cities – Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town – the roadshow was a resounding success, highlighting the palpable excitement and eagerness of retailers and clients to reconnect and stay informed about the latest advancements from Bosch.

DIY & Industrial Trade News had the privilege of attending the Johannesburg event, which took place at the Cedar Woods of Sandton in Woodmead. The familiar format, with seven dedicated stations, ensured a seamless experience for attendees. Each station focused on a specific category: Cordless Tools, Metal and After Sales, Wood, Measuring Tools, Gardening and Dremel and accessories, and Concrete.

Visitors rotated through the stations, engaging with knowledgeable Bosch sales, technical, and marketing staff who provided demonstrations of new products and innovative solutions. Each attendee received a card to be completed as they moved through the stations, answering questions, and having their card signed off at each stop. Completed cards were then entered into a draw to win one of several exciting prizes, including the GSB 183-Li Cordless Impact Drill/ Driver, the GLM 25-23 Laser Measure, or the AdvancedPrune 18V-45 Cordless Pruner.

WOODWORKING INNOVATIONS

At the Wood Station, Andrew Bussey showcased a range of exciting new products, including the GCM 245 D Mitre Saw. This saw promises long-lasting accuracy in every cut, thanks to a highly visible laser line and a detachable box extension for better material support. Additionally, the saw’s 310mm sliding capacity allows for larger cuts with superior precision. Bussey also demonstrated corded and cordless circular saws, along with Bosch’s new versatile sanding products.

METAL MASTERY

The Metal Station, manned by Kevin Vermeulen, featured the Magnetic Core Drill: GBM 50-2, an ideal solution for precise and efficient metal drilling. This powerful tool is designed with laser technology for fast target setup and features a smart HMI system for preventive maintenance and load alert indicators, ensuring a long tool lifetime. Kevin also demonstrated Bosch’s impressive range of small and large angle grinders, emphasising their efficiency and durability.

Samson Lebassi took charge at the Cordless Station, presenting an exciting mix of small and large cordless products. Highlights included the Cordless Jobsite Light, the world’s first floodlight in the 18V category capable of emitting up to 10 000 lumens. This robust floodlight features a solid metal body, shockabsorbing rubber frame, and heavy-duty safety bars, making it brighter than traditional 500W

CONCRETE EXCELLENCE

Rob Cameron-Smith led the Concrete Station, proudly showcasing Bosch’s Germanengineered breakers and rotary hammers. Attendees were particularly impressed by the GSH 14C, a high impact 14kg breaker with Brushless AC Motor and Bluetooth

halogen floodlights. The light’s Bluetooth connectivity allows for remote control and lighting adjustments via a smartphone app. Other notable cordless tools included the Cordless Rivet Gun: GRG 18V-16 C, which offers versatile riveting capabilities and also features smartphone app connectivity for enhanced functionality, and the Cordless Heat Gun: GHG 18V-50 with overheat protection and two temperature settings 300°C and 500°C.

PRECISION MEASURING

At the Measuring Tools Station, Wayne Klopper showed the latest in Bosch’s line laser technology, capable of operating with 12V, 18V, and C-type alkaline batteries. The upgraded detection tools, including the new GMS 120-27, offer superior ergonomics and can detect metal up to 120mm, with live wire detection limited to 50mm. Klopper also introduced a forthcoming camera, set to launch in December, which can operate immersed (in specific liquids), for up to 30 minutes and features a larger screen, flexible battery system, and a 1.5m cable.

DAY 3: PERSONAL GROWTH AND EXPLORATION

The morning of day three themed ‘We ♥ Personal Growth’, was a conference session hosted by Jaco Hattingh, managing director of Legendary Retail Brands. Hattingh highlighted the pillars of Mica’s success: exceptional customer service; the flexibility of owner-run stores; and a commitment to rewarding both customers and members. He also recognised the New Mica Members – Emmarentia Mica Paint Centre, Langebaan Mica, Mbombela Mica Paint Centre, Phuta’s Mica, Wohnen Mica Paint Centre, Xpress Mica Build Paledi, Action Mica Paint and Hardware, Kimberley Mica Build.

The session included inspirational insights from guest speaker Vusi Thembekwayo, a renowned venture capitalist and public speaker. Thembekwayo’s presentation captivated the audience as he delved into the challenges of the South African economy, the importance of customer lifetime value, and the critical role of community in retail success. His energetic delivery and thought-provoking case studies provided attendees with valuable takeaways to implement in their own businesses.

DAY 3 EVENING: GALA BANQUET AND AWARDS

The final night culminated in a glamorous gala banquet and awards ceremony, themed ‘We ♥ Celebrating Success’, and sponsored by Ingco, Wadfow, and Decakila. The Power Festival, now in its third year, delivered on its promise of being bigger and better, taking the industry by storm at the stunning Emerald Casino Resort last month. Over two action-packed days, attendees experienced a blend of fun, networking, and incredible displays of innovation, all while enjoying top-notch entertainment and unique surprises.

The festival kicked off with a day of friendly competition and great branding, starting with a Putt-Putt tournament sponsored by Vermont Sales and a Ten-Pin bowling challenge courtesy of GlueDevil.

As the sun set, the excitement flowed into the evening’s Neon Night, sponsored by Ruwag. The event space was transformed into a dazzling display of neon lights and glowing décor, setting the stage for an evening of unforgettable experiences. The festivities began with a welcome address by Rashid Mohammed, CFO, who spoke passionately about the ‘UNFAIR ADVANTAGE’.

He mentioned that to date, Power Build supports close to 700 member stores, a remarkable growth of 560 stores since March 2021. He added that this growth is testament to the groups’ collective commitment to innovation

Power Build is more than a facilitator of transactions, we are partners in growth, we empower each member with the knowledge, tools and insights needed to thrive in today’s competitive market. Reflecting on the past year, Mohammed highlighted several significant milestones for Power Build. These included a substantial increase in membership, expanded supplier partnerships and the introduction of dedicated internal sales support to enhance member benefits. Rebates to members have grown by

over 50% compared to the previous year.

Additionally the partnership with AutObarn has strengthened the automotive product offering.

Power Build also hosted a successful charity golf day, doubling the proceeds from the previous year with the funds going to New Hope, a school for children with special needs.

“In our years of engagement with independent entrepreneurs, we have seen that many businesses fail due to the lack of succession planning. It is essential to not only have a plan but to review it regularly to ensure its relevance in a changing environment. Furthermore, as we embrace this new digital era, it is crucial to utilise digital platforms such as HoneyPot more extensively. The customer of tomorrow is better connected, informed, and will be looking for value beyond price. Independent retailers excel in offering deeper customer insights, advice, and exceptional customer service,” Mohammed emphasised.

He closed off by thanking the suppliers and members for their support and emphasised Power Build’s commitment to building on its successes and creating lasting value for all.

He shared the company’s vision and commended the resilience of the businesses in attendance, highlighting the challenging economic climate of early 2024. Ruwag sponsored the first evening, which featured a captivating performance by mentalist Brendon Peel, adding a touch of intrigue and excitement to the event. Prizes were awarded for Putt-Putt and Ten-Pin Bowling, while five lucky guests received Ruwag-sponsored gifts after finding hidden bee symbols on special placemats.

As the evening approached, the festival took on a mesmerising Arabian/Aladdin theme, sponsored by Ingco Tools. Guests were welcomed into an opulent setting of breathtaking décor, complete with stunning outfits and performances by fire dancers and belly dancers. In a thrilling highlight of the evening, attendees witnessed the draw for the highly coveted bakkie giveaway. To qualify, stores needed to show growth of over 25% compared to the previous year. From the 30 qualifying stores, 10 finalists were selected: Easy Build Hardware, Paint Tin, Handi in DIY, Powerbuild Randfontein, Anchorville Hardware, Ridge Hardware, Ziyabuya Hardware, LCN Plumbing Supplies, Jabula Hardware Mayville, and Powerbuild Vaalwater. Each finalist selected a container, with those containing a bee winning a bakkie. Congratulations to Jabula Hardware and Easy Build Kimberly on driving away in style! The other finalists didn’t leave empty-handed either, each winning a valuable trailer.

Power Build managing director Armand Feldtmann concluded the event with heartfelt thanks, dedicating the evening to his late friend and mentor, Henry Oberholser. In August, Ingco Tools held their second corporate day at the Legends MX adventure farm. Hosted by Red-Lined Motorsport Adventure, this event offered some of Ingco’s top customers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the thrill of rally raid racing firsthand.

Attendees enjoyed exhilarating rides in fully South African designed and manufactured rally raid cars, driven by experienced professionals Terence Marsh and Luke Botha. The event was met with enthusiastic responses, with retailers beaming with excitement and nerves as they embraced the heart-stopping adventure.

RED-LINED MOTORSPORT ADVENTURE

Founder of Red-Lined Motorsport Adventure, Terence Marsh, shared the inspiring journey of his company. As a passionate motor enthusiast, Marsh travelled abroad to purchase an off-road vehicle but was disappointed with the options available. Realising he could build a better car himself, he established Red-Lined Motorsport in 2012. Today, the company is an internationally recognised manufacturer of T1+ and T1 rally raid supercars, driven by years of experience and a passion for adventure.

Red-Lined Motorsport has grown to become the second-largest supercar manufacturer in the world, second only to Toyota Gazoo Racing. Both companies hail from South Africa, showcasing the country’s impressive engineering and technical skills. While all cars are manufactured in South
