Cuttlefish pretend to be crabs to catch fish Researchers from Japan, from the University of Ryukyus published a video of a study in the Journal of Ethology, in which pharaoh cuttlefish are seen arm-flapping, in a manner that resembles the movements of a crab, while also lightening areas on their skin. Kohei Okamoto and his research team hypothesised that the fish may be emulating hermit crabs in order to inconspicuously approach their prey or protect themselves against predators.
Scientists stunned by discovery
An astonishing new finding, deep beneath the sea, has come as a major surprise to scientists, and it could change our understanding of the last Ice Age. Massive craters, as wide as twelve city blocks, were found that scientists think were caused by huge eruptions of underground methane gas. It is an incredible discovery that paints a colourful picture of the end of the Ice Age, as explosions ruptured the sea floor and changed Earth to what it looks like today.
Sea turtles: the lastest victims of pollution Green turtles in the Great Barrier Reef are the latest identified victims of environmental pollution. Researchers from the Queenland Alliance for Environmental Health Studies in Australia found heart and gout medications, herbicides, pesticides and industrial chemicals in blood samples taken from green turtles living near two urban locations and three remote locations along the reef.
Could acidifying oceans slow coral disease? First UN talk to save oceans
World leaders convened at the UN headquaters last month, in the first major bid to solve the toughest problems facing our oceans: coral bleaching, plastic polution, overfishing and rising seas due to climate change. The ocean conference that took place from 5 to 9 June in New York, attempted to rally nations, big and small, to make meaningful changes to perserve what is arguably Earth’s most important resource.

Coral reefs face intensifying struggles as greenhouse gases warm and acidify the ocean, but new research suggests a potential silver lining. Some coral diseases might also dwindle amid enviromental change. A controlled environmental study, led by Mote Marine Laboratory, and published in June, revealed that black band disease was less deadly to mountainous star coral as water acidified, or decreased in PH. The ocean’s PH is decreasing through the process of ocean acidification (OA) due to excessive carbon dioxide, the same greenhouse gas, driving temperature change worldwide.

Welcome to the fourth issue of LMS. In this edition we focus on science in Africa, and have numerous articles on different subjects under this banner for your enjoyment. Nina Dudnik, founder and CEO of Seeding Labs describes and details why we should stop bemoaning Africa’s lack of scientists, and start looking at positive ventures to ensure that we fund them instead. Prof Frans Swanepoel, wrote an article on the power that science has to boost farming in Africa, and what needs to be done to enable this. We have a story on the winners of the LaunchLab challenge and we celebrate South African scientists who are currently making huge strides across the industry. We also have a feature on craft beer and the process involved in developing this trending market, and how science, engineering and a love of beer enables this. In this issue we cover the subjects of education and research, rapid testing, laboratory safety and hygiene, biotechnology, liquid handling and analysis, medical laboratory diagnostics, thermal analysis and LIMS in the laboratory. If you are looking to upgrade any lab equipment in your facility then look no further, because you will also find the latest in lab equipment in the product and company directory of the magazine.

All-in-one science solution
Scientists have discovered a material that might be science’s biggest overachiever. This material, which is a type of a mineral called perovskite, can turn sunlight, heat, and movement into electricity - all at the same time.
Frog-shaped ice During the cold winters, the Alaskan Wood Frog becomes a frog-shaped block of ice. It stops breathing, and its heart stops beating. When Spring arrives the frog thaws and returns to normal going along its merry way.
China does it again China is attempting another world’s first with their new ‘ART’ train design which mixes ‘bus, tram and train’ all in one. Instead of following the usual metal rails, it follows dotted white lines painted on a road. ART stands for Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit, and its maker, Chinese rail transit firm CRRC, is calling it a ‘smart bus’. The driverless 30-metre long bus is fully electric and can travel over 40km on a full charge. While it’s guided by the white lines on the pavement, the sensors along its route (combined with sensors on the vehicle itself) help it follow the ‘virtual rails’ and adapt to its surroundings and unexpected situations in real time.
Trees need space too Certain tree species don’t allow their crowns to touch. This ‘canopy disengagement’, or crown shyness, forms a striking pattern - one which scientists don’t fully understand. Here’s what researchers do know: crown shyness occurs most often with trees of the same species, but not always. Young and short trees avoid the tendency, but it does appear once they get older and taller and when their limbs begin to sway in the wind. According to ZME Science, “Most of the trees are tall, slender, and typically found in high wind areas.” This evidence might lead you to believe that trees practice crown shyness in order to avoid wind collision.
Do you really look like your name? At birth your parents named you Michael, but apparently you ‘don’t look like a Michael’. Instead, most people agree that you fit your middle name, John. So, John it is. But why? According to a February 2017 study, there’s a reason why we attribute certain traits to certain names. And, to take it a step further, a person’s name might even influence their facial appearance. In one of the study’s experiments, researchers focused on name stereotypes and showed participants a stranger’s face with a choice of five names (Jacob, Dan, Josef, Nathaniel). The subjects were able to correctly identify the man as ‘Dan’ about 38% of the time, which is above the 25% level of chance.
Why did scientists turn spinach leaves into beating human heart tissue? Have you ever noticed that the veins in a leaf look a bit like the veins in your own body? So did researchers at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In a study published in 2017, they announced that they successfully grew human heart tissue on spinach leaves, which may unveil the possibility of one day replacing damaged heart tissue with the help of plants.

Science has the power to boost farming in Africa. But a lot has to change By Professor Frans Swanepoel The agricultural sector is the world’s largest single employer. It provides jobs for more than 40% of the global population. It’s also the largest source of income and jobs for poor, rural households. It is, by and large, a successful sector. There have been huge improvements in yields and food production over the past five decades. More cereals have been produced annually during the past 40 years than in any earlier period. It is also predicted that more grain will be harvested in 2017 than in any year in history. This is as a consequence of scientific advances, increased fertiliser use and favourable rainfall patterns. Many of these gains have been felt in Africa. Improved seed varieties, new fertilisers and pesticides, improved credit and market access have all played a role. So have scientific innovations such as improved

Labotec staff ‘with a minute to win it’
What an awesome day the staff of Labotec had on Friday 19 May at The Venue Country Hotel in the Magaliesburg. Not only did
everyone arrive looking the part in either a hippie or gangster outfit, but the spirit and participation was exceptional. The teams had to rely on each other for expertise; support and most importantly – teamwork as they battled it out with ‘a minute to win it’. Out of five teams, the winners for the spirit award went to the Bluebuddies, while the best-dressed trophy went to team El Toro. The overall winners, however, were surprisingly the hippie group, The Doobies who achieved the overall best time for the game challenges. Labotec also presented a trophy and breakaway travel award to the Best Salesperson for 2016, which went to Athisha Singh. So fully inspired, the Labotec team will continue to deliver exceptional service to you, our clients. Contact: 011 315 5434 or sales@labotec.co.za M

to support microbreweries in creating craft beers suited for this local, expanding and trendy craft beer market. Words such as hops, vessel, malt and fermentation comes to mind, but it is much more complex than simply adding certain ingredients together and hoping for the best taste once the ‘beer’ has matured.
Air Products’ infrastructure enables them to supply microbreweries via cylinder, Maxitank, Minitank or CryoEase®, which is an effective and convenient alternative to cylinders, suited for customers with smaller operational spaces. According to the craft brew masters, craft beer is expected to take at least 10% total market share of South Africa by 2022. M
Craft beer brewing has become a form of art and the use of the correct gases, at the correct time, in the correct quantities are vital in ensuring the best outcome. Air Products supplies gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen to a number of microbrewies in Gauteng. Freshline oxygen, which is added to the wort prior to the fermentation process, improves the yeast performance, ultimately affecting the flavour of the beer. Freshline carbon dioxide
The story of a mad giant Mad Giant brings together science and an immense love of beer, as the brand’s owner, Eben Uys, is a 32-year-old chemical engineer whose thorough understanding of froth has made its way into scientific journals. Eben got involved with crafting beer through a final year project as chemical engineer undergraduate. Getting the brewery to where it is today, has not been a small feat, “It was a continuous push, learning, failing, improving and never giving-up process,” says the brew master. Mad Giant received its name, because “Mad represents the person and Giant is the dream.” Why is it important that beer gets bottled in amber, or as a last option, in green bottles? “Amber bottles act as a 90% efficient filter against UV light while green bottles only filter out about 30%. Cans are the best, they provide a 100% barrier against UV,” explains Eben.

In summary this paper has proposed that a well-accepted business tool, the Balanced Scorecard, can be used to compliment the scientific and quality endeavors of calibration and testing laboratories, enabling them to translate their strategy into success. Of equal importance is the fact that this tool can be used to communicate to all levels in the organisation, from shareholders to laboratory staff, as well as stakeholders, when this is necessary, providing a clear future direction for the laboratory. This could be even more important when the lab is not a third party or commercial activity and various other objectives are part of the strategy, besides financial considerations. Such an approach may also help the lab to ‘sell’ its worth in the organisation in terms that the management understands.

Finally, it should not be forgotten that small independent third party laboratories could use this methodology equally effectively as well. Its appeal is that it will force the owners to constantly monitor and evaluate the lab’s performance according to the strategy they have embarked on and provide a useful mechanism for them to see if they are indeed achieving their objectives.
