Their straight-laced design makes these hoods timelessly elegant eyecatchers in prestigious kitchens. MIELE’S OWN COFFEE – BLACK EDITION NO. 1
Uncompromisingly elegant, versatile and multi-faceted – this is how the new SmartLine units from Miele present themselves to connoisseurs of fine cuisine. Customers can choose freely from induction hob, Teppan Yaki, gas ring, induction wok and countertop extractor. As an ensemble, they form a cooking centre with a puristic appeal, which breaks down the boundaries between kitchen and living space.
When creating the perfect cup of coffee, the quality of the coffee is as important as the right preparation. For this reason Miele has commissioned the creation of a Miele-own coffee: Miele Black Edition N°1.
All SmartLine modules have a depth of 52cm, and their frameless glass ceramic screen permits flush installation. The SmartSelect touch controls only become visible on the black ceramic screen when the appliance is in operation. This underlines the aesthetic appearance and allows for congruency in design; making SmartLine the ideal proposition in open-plan kitchens. The SmartLine range comprises two PowerFlex induction hobs (60cm or 38cm wide), countertop downdraught extractors that dispenses the need for a cookerhood, a stainless steel induction Teppan Yaki (38cm wide), an induction wok, two gas units (38cm wide) comprising a large single-flame burner (dual wok), and a two-flame unit with a normal and a fast burner.

SMART COOK-IE – CREATE YOUR OWN COOKING CENTRE
Miele’s Black Edition N°1 coffee blend was composed specifically for Miele in cooperation with the Vollmer private roastery. Great care is taken when the beans are roasted in a gentle drum roasting procedure. This takes a little longer than an industrial-assembly-line roasting process and demands all the sensitivity of experienced masters in coffee roasting.
Along with the CleanSteel finish, in 2018, Miele’s KWT6112 built-in wine conditioning unit will also be available in Obsidian Black and Graphite Grey. 10 KITCHEN APPLIANCE TRENDS FOR 2018 LEADING KITCHEN APPLIANCE MANUFACTURER, MIELE, OFFERS SOME INSIGHT INTO THE HOTTEST KITCHEN APPLIANCE TRENDS FOR 2018.
Kitchen trends may come and go, but one thing remains constant: the kitchen is the heart of the home. Whether it is being used to prepare gourmet meals, or as a gathering place for friends and family – Liam Gawne from leading appliance manufacturer, Miele, explains that the three Cs will define the kitchen for 2018: colour, customisation and convenience. Appliances are first and foremost a practical element in kitchens that make your life easier, but today, with the introduction of technology and high design, they are also becoming key design features in any kitchen worth its salt. Here is his breakdown of the top 10 trends influencing kitchen appliances going forward:
INTEGRATION

In terms of kitchen styles, transitional design that sits somewhere between traditional and contemporary, continues to gain popularity. Says Liam: “Although most modern kitchens are inspired with transitional elements, they tend to err more on the side of modernity as compared to traditional. Miele’s Generation 6000 range of appliances boasts the PureLine design, which harmonise perfectly with transitional styling with its puristic and linear design. The key features here are the use of a variety of materials and surface finishes that leave a harmonious overall impression.” TECHNOLOGY Today, increasingly more homeowners are looking for appliances that test the limits of innovation – appliances that not only boast streamlined, design-conscious aesthetics and solid functionality, but that also offer cutting-edge technology that will go that extra mile to help produce only the best end results possible in the simplest and most time-efficient manner possible.
the desired automatic programme on a steam cooker in an instant, or selecting the operating mode and temperature in just a few simple steps before baking – this can all be done extremely elegantly and more simply than ever before with Miele’s new M Touch controls. Says Liam: “M Touch technology is a high-resolution TFT (thin-film transistor) display, and it is reminiscent of smart phones and tablet PCs. The menu is browsed by swiping or scrolling with the tip of a finger. Functions and menu options appear in brilliantly clear white letters on a black background. Colour elements are favoured for the display in the interests of improved clarity and a low-key approach – ‘OK’ to confirm a function is highlighted in green and the ‘Stop’ button is red.”

DESIGN
GOING GREEN
The environmentally friendly kitchen begins with eating green, but it certainly doesn’t end there. Energy- and water-efficient appliances are not only good for the pocket, but they are a good choice for the planet too. Says Liam: “It has been estimated that appliances can use up to 20% of your total COLOUR One such example is Miele’s MTouch electricity bill – so changing to enertechnology, which allows you to oper- gy-efficient appliances can save you a Gone are the days of plain and dull ate your Miele Generation 6000 appli- substantial amount over the long term.” kitchens – as kitchens cement their ances in the same way that you operate role as a home’s central gathering your smartphone. A double cappuccino As such, energy efficient appliances are place, Liam notes that they’re taking at the touch of a single button, finding a must-have for any modern kitchen – on increasingly more vibrant colours: “The kitchen is a key place for colour: its the place where people gather, so it’s apt to have some mixing and matching of colours to create a high energy impact.” Miele offers lovers of fine kitchen appliances in four colour options – Obsidian Black, Brilliant White, CleanSteel Stainless Steel and the oh-so-sophisticated Graphite Grey. Miele has also introduced colour-coded cookerhoods to its range, explains Liam: “Customers can choose from an exceptionally wide range of colours from the RAL colour guide, to ensure that their cookerhoods add to the overall colour scheme of their home.” KITCHEN INSPIRATIONS BY MIELE 2018

however, Liam advises that you should look at both the energy rating of the appliance, and also consider its overall carbon footprint: “A truly green appliance is not just about its energy efficiency ratings – you also need to consider the sustainable practices of the manufacturer, as well as the overall carbon footprint of the appliance in question. For example, all of Mieles appliances are designed, manufactured and tested to last for a minimum of 20 years, which not only means you get more bang for your buck, but it also seriously reduces its overall carbon footprint.”
you look your best, but it also negates the need for costly medical treatment and time-out from the workplace.” Liam explains that healthy cooking methods such as steaming, have really grown in popularity: “Steam ovens represent a mega-trend in the kitchen, incorporating the principles of healthy, wholesome cooking like no other appliance.”
nation steam oven for example – it offers an interior with a huge 68-litre capacity. This allows the use of up to four rack levels, considerably extending the range of applications when compared other models on the market.” COFFEE Being able to brew a delicious cup of coffee in the comfort of your own home is a huge trend at the moment, says Liam: “Increasingly more homeowners are choosing to save on store-bought designer coffees in lieu of being able to make them at home instead. Today, coffee aficionados are not prepared to settle for inferior quality coffee at any time of the day – they want to enjoy the luxury of sipping a good quality brew while they are relaxing at home too.”
SIZE
Even though on average, modern homes might be getting smaller, there has been a resurgence in popularity for large-format appliances that do more. Liam says: “Appliances are seen by WELLBEING most as a long-term investment and as As modern lifestyles create new health such, more and more consumers are challenges, maintaining or improving opting for larger appliances that offer health and wellness has become a a bigger capacity. CONVENIENCE
When it comes to kitchen appliances, functionality continues to reign supreme. Says Liam: “Regarding appliances, design should never be an end in itself – it should always occur in symbiosis with maximum functionality. In terms of Miele’s Generation 6000 range of kitchen appliances for example, this means a host of added features that ensure optimum performance and user-friendliness.” Added functions such as ovens with pyrolytic cleaning for example, offer users an effortless way of removing KITCHEN INSPIRATIONS BY MIELE 2018

KITCHEN APPLIANCE TRENDS grease splashes and residue in the cabinet by incinerating them to ash at very high temperatures. Miele’s Con@ctivity 2.0 technology featured in its cookerhoods is another great example – it adjusts suction power automatically in relation to what is happening on the hob below, guaranteeing a pleasant room micro-climate. COUNTERTOP APPLIANCES You no longer have to settle on mediocre appliances just because you don’t own your home – now you can invest in premium countertop appliances that you can take with you whenever you move. Liam adds: “Countertop models not only boast the large majority of innovations, technology and functionality of the built-in models, but they are also more affordable, and they are transportable. “Countertop units, such as Miele’s countertop coffee machines, steam oven and microwave for example are becoming increasingly popular options for those who rent, or alternatively, for homeowners who do not want to renovate their kitchen in order to benefit from Miele’s high-end appliances.” KITCHEN INSPIRATIONS BY MIELE 2018

with all their colour and feature options, Miele customers have ample opportunities to design their kitchens around their own personal preferences. Miele always offers the perfect integration with every style of kitchen, notes Liam: “Technically, ArtLine models are based on current built-in appliances from Miele’s Generation 6000 range – with one significant difference – the function of the handle on a conventional model has been replaced by a sensor that is integrated into the fascia, called Touch2Open technology. Gently touching this sensor opens the motor-assisted door, damping its action as it reaches the fully open position.” A MATTER OF CONTROL Customers can choose between two ArtLine model versions – namely price-entry models that feature Miele’s DirectSensor controls, or the top-ofthe-range models that boast MTouch TFT controls. MTouch controls allow you to control your kitchen appliances in the same way that you operate your smart phone – by touch, notes Liam: “The M Touch controls are similar to a smartphone in the way that they interact with the end user via touch, and also in the way that it offers a practical search function for automatic programmes.” Miele built-in appliances in the ArtLine design are available in Brilliant White, Obsidian Black and Graphite Grey finishes. Liam concludes: “Now you can invest in appliances that offer high-end technology, durability and best-in-market design – Miele’s ArtLine collection is kitchen appliance integration and customisation at its best!”

IF YOU ARE DREAMING BIG, BUT YOU ARE SHORT ON SPACE – READ ON FOR SOME ENLIGHTENING TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SMALL KITCHEN. When you are working in a small space, even with one person, it can feel like there are too many cooks in the kitchen. However, with a few clever design tricks, even the smallest kitchen can make a big impact. LAYOUT MATTERS Mercia De Jager from leading kitchen appliance manufacturer, Miele, offers a few tips on how to get the most out of your small kitchen space: “Arguably, the most important aspect of designing a small kitchen is getting the layout right. A smart kitchen layout can make the most passionate foodie feel right at home in cramped quarters.”
Here are three great layouts for small spaces:
and there are no troublesome corner cabinets to configure or budget for.
One-wall: The one-wall kitchen layout is generally found in studio or loft spaces because it’s the ultimate space-saver. Cabinets and appliances are fixed on a single wall. Most modern designs also include an island, which evolves the space into a galley-type style with a walk-through corridor. Galley: This efficient layout is ideal for smaller spaces and one-cook kitchens. The galley kitchen is characterised by two walls opposite each other, with a walkway in between them. Galleys make the best use of every square millimetre of space,
L-Shape: An L-shaped kitchen solves the problem of maximising corner space, and it’s a smart design for small kitchens. The versatile L-shaped kitchen consists of countertops on two adjoining walls that are perpendicular, forming an L. You can easily add a dining space and multiple work zones to this layout.

SMALL KITCHENS
BIG IDEAS FOR SMALL KITCHENS

APPLIANCES FOR COMPACT SPACES In order to fit everything that you need into your kitchen, try to select compact versions of kitchen appliances. Luxury appliances aren’t just for large kitchens – premium kitchen appliance manufacturers, such as Miele for example, offer compact versions of most appliances, making them an ideal choice for smaller spaces.
14
SMALL KITCHENS Look for kitchen appliances that perform more than one role, for example a combination steam oven. Integrating your appliances into your kitchen cabinetry is another trick of the trade that will maximise your space. It will save space, and keep the room looking open, streamlined and sleek.
STORAGE SOLUTIONS Storage is always an important element in any kitchen design, however it is absolutely pivotal when designing compact kitchens. Clutter can make a space seem cramped and even smaller than it is.
If there are too many items cluttering up To further enhance these minimalist the worktops, you can consider clever qualities, why not opt for handleless storage solutions such as wall-mountcabinetry and appliance designs, such ed magnetic knife strips, or perhaps as those featured in Miele’s new Art- an under-counter wine cooler under line range of appliances for example. the kitchen island counter for example.

Making full use of all the vertical space in a room is a great idea, by adding floor-to-ceiling cabinetry for example. However, the only drawback is being able to reach the really tall cabinetry. For this reason, installing rolling ladders, like those found in old fashioned libraries, in your kitchen is a growing new trend. These ladders make high areas easy to access. Another way of maximising your vertical storage space is by installing integrated cookerhoods, allowing you to install cabinetry above the hob.

The next generation of refrigeration appliances have some of the coolest design and technological innovations yet. Liam Gawne from award-winning appliance manufacturer, Miele, offers the inside scoop on the hottest trends leading the way: COLOUR AND FINISH

Refrigeration appliances are often the largest of all the kitchen appliances, and their aesthetics need to blend in seamlessly with surrounding cabinetry and make a bold statement with colour or luxurious finishes.

In an average household, it is estimated that as much as 20% of all food purchased ends up being thrown away. A storage temperature between 0ºC and 3ºC and an air humidity of up to 90% ensure that your food remains fresh for up to fivetimes longer than in a standard fridge.” EASIER CONTROLS Temperature controls have become considerably high-tech in recent years – with electronic touch-screen panels leading the way. Liam ellaborates: “Now you can operate your fridge or freezer the same way that you operate your smart phone – Miele’s K 20.000 model series for example, feature TFT colour displays and touch controls, geared to match the design of Miele’s Generation 6000 range of kitchen appliances. This display offers easy and precise control over the temperature inside your fridge and freezer, some even allowing you to adjust up to six different areas in your fridge.” LIGHTING THE WAY Any refrigeration appliance worth its salt should feature energy-saving LED lighting so that you can clearly see what is in your fridge or freezer at any time of the day. Miele’s take on refrigeration lighting is borderline science fiction, explains Liam: “The LED lighting in Miele’s refrigeration models gradually brightens when the door is opened. Exclusive to Miele, FlexiLight provides uniform and non-glare lighting with light sources along the front edge of glass shelves where they cannot be covered or obstructed. Thanks to side electrical contacts at each shelf level, glass shelves can easily be relocated, taking their light source with them as they go in order, for example, to create space for a large gateau.”
and do your bit for the environment, it is imperative that you choose the most energy efficient model possible: “With its current refrigeration products, Miele has demonstrated that high performance and energy-saving can be achieved simultaneously. The majority of Miele’s refrigeration appliances exceed the A+ energy-efficiency classification. When compared to refrigeration appliances with an A rating, you can achieve savings of 20% on appliances with an energy-efficiency rating of A+, 40% on appliances with a rating of A++, and up to 60% on appliances with an A+++ rating.”

THERE ARE SO MANY FACTORS THAT GO INTO CHOOSING FLOORING FOR YOUR KITCHEN – READ ON TO MAKE YOUR DECISION A LITTLE EASIER.
If you are considering upgrading your kitchen by installing new flooring, then it is important to make functionality and durability your top priority. Remember that the kitchen is a high-traffic area that is prone to spills, ranging from water, oil and wine. As such, you are looking for a flooring material that offers some form of resistance to liquids, is durable and easy to clean. Here is a rundown of the pros and cons of the most popular kitchen flooring options currently on the market: CONCRETE FLOORING
a unique end result – it can be stained, polished, stencilled and waxed. One of the major downsides to concrete flooring is that it is a cold, hard surface – as such, if you live in an area that gets cold, it is highly advisable to install some kind of under-floor heating beneath the flooring. Another drawback is that the flooring can crack if not installed properly – as such, it is imperative that you hire the skills of somebody who specialises in installing concrete floors. Other cons of concrete flooring include the fact that it needs to be sealed and re-sealed over time, and it can stain.

However, it is not the best option for wet areas in the home such as kitchens and bathrooms, as it will be exposed to too much water. Because wood is a natural product, it expands and contracts as moisture and temperature levels rise and fall. While in small amounts this isn’t an issue, in a kitchen, where heat and steam are commonplace, it can become a problem.

EXCELLENT CLEANING RESULTS, CONVENIENT AND HYGIENIC EMPTYING OF THE DUST CONTAINER, QUIET OPERATION AND CONVENIENT HANDLING.
When buying vacuum cleaners, consumer preferences are divided. In South Africa, around every second buyer opts for a model with a dustbag on account of their excellent suction power and hygiene. However, the other half prefer bagless models, largely due to the obvious cost savings, as well as the fact that the dirt that has been vacuumed is immediately visible in the dust container. Yet, up until now, the fans of bagless cleaning have had to put up with the associated downsides, which was, above all, the often less-than-hygienic process of emptying the container and – in the case of many models on the market – unsatisfactory cleaning performance on carpets. With the launch of Miele’s new Blizzard CX1 bagless vacuum cleaner however, these compromises are all a thing of the past. Miele has opted for the mono-cyclone approach, called Vortex Technol-

COOKING TOPS WHETHER YOU ARE INVESTING IN AN ELECTRIC, GAS, OR INDUCTION HOB, READ ON TO FIND OUT WHICH ONE IS PERFECT FOR YOUR KITCHEN.
Whether you are passionate about cooking, or you only cook for very special occasions, choosing the right hob for your kitchen is a crucial decision. Mercia de Jager from leading kitchen appliance manufacturer, Miele, offers some advice on how to select the best hob for your cooking needs: “With so many hobs currently on the market, it can often be difficult to know where to start.” She works through the pros and cons of the three main types of hobs to choose from, namely gas, electric and induction: GAS HOBS A gas hob features burners that display visible flames, with a metal pan support on top. Traditionally, gas hobs have been the most popular choice amongst professional chefs and foodies, due to the fact that they offer access to instant, powerful heat that can be quickly and easily adjusted. Other benefits of gas hobs include the fact that they can be used with any type of cookware, they are comparative-
ly affordable to run, and the cooking area cools down quickly after use. Says Mercia: “Gas is a primary energy source and produces no pollutants through conversion processes, as is the case with electricity generation – making it a very green option.”
In the past, electric plate and electric ring hobs were popular, however, today, for the most part, they have been replaced with ceramic top electric hobs.

SMARTLINE OR DOMINO HOBS Uncompromisingly elegant, versatile and multi-faceted – this is how the new SmartLine units from Miele present themselves to connoisseurs of fine cuisine. Customers can choose freely from induction hob, Teppan Yaki, gas ring, induction wok and countertop extractor. As an ensemble, they form a cooking centre with a puristic appeal which breaks down the boundaries between kitchen and living space. The heart and soul of this appliance constellation is in many cases likely to be the 60cm wide induction hob with a countertop extractor, and further modules which dock on either side. “With this basis to choose from, creativity knows no bounds, not least because two or more extractors can be integrated into a run of units,” says Mercia. All SmartLine modules have a depth of 52cm; their frameless glass ceramic screen permits flush or surface-mounted installation. The touch controls (SmartSelect) only become visible on the black ceramic screen when the appliance is in operation. “This underlines the aesthetic appearance and makes for congruency in design, making SmartLine the ideal proposition in open-plan kitchens,” she notes. COUNTERTOPS AN OVERVIEW ON THE MOST POPULAR KITCHEN COUNTERTOP SURFACE MATERIALS.
Your kitchen’s countertops will be a main feature, and today, homeowners can choose from literally hundreds of colours, patterns and textures, in materials ranging from natural stone, through to stained concrete.
lasts for around 10 to 15 years. The beauty of granite is that it is very serviceable – standing up well to heavy use, splashes, knife nicks and heat.
However, although it might be tempting to choose this surface material based on aesthetics alone, it is important to consider the material’s durability, maintenance and of course, the cost. Although choosing the right surface may seem overwhelming, the choice can be broken down to six of the most popular high-end countertop surface materials, which include:
Wood and bamboo countertops add a natural warmth and comfort to a kitchen. Before settling on wood countertops you need to be clear in your mind about whether the area you’re setting up is specifically for cutting and chopping or for food preparation that doesn’t involve knives. A sealed wood finish is essentially water-proof and stain-proof and requires little or no maintenance. Whether the effect is accomplished with varnish, polyurethane, or sealer, these countertops are not intended as workspaces. If you’re going to slice and dice, you have to have an oil-finished block instead of a sealed block. A natural oil finish is safe for direct knife work but requires cleaning and oiling on a regular basis. You will find many chefs who prefer to use butcher-block counters for preparing and serving food – with cutting and chopping being done on a separate board of the same material.
GRANITE Granite was once the reserve for only very high-end kitchens, but it has become a common feature in many kitchens today. It comes in a wide variety of colours, ranging from vibrant blues and greens, deep reds and mottled wine hues, to variegated browns and midnight black. After cutting and polishing, granite is treated with an impregnating sealer that makes it stain-resistant, and
SOLID WOOD AND BAMBOO

Wood is considered to be the most eco-friendly option when it comes to choosing a kitchen countertop as wood is a renewable resource. However, they must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after contact with foods such as raw meat. QUARTZ SURFACING Made from resin and quarts, this material is also referred to as engineered quartz or engineered stone. It is a popular choice, as it offers a good compromise between the beautiful aesthetics of natural stone, versus the easy care of solid surfaces. It is available in a wide array of colours, but it doesn’t have the natural variegation of natural stone. MARBLE Marble countertops are oh-so-glamorous – they are unmatchable with regards to their luminescence and distinctive veining. Although this surface stands up to heat very well, it is very susceptible to stains, even when sealed. As a result, it is best used in small limited areas, in conjunction with another countertop material for areas that get used a lot.
26
COUNTERTOPS STAINLESS STEEL
CONCRETE
In the past, stainless steel was mainly found in commercial kitchens. However, today, stainless steel has become a mainstay countertop surface for contemporary kitchens – custom-made to fit each particular kitchen for a truly tailored look. Aside from its sleek, modern looks, stainless steel is virtually indestructible, heat-resistant and impervious to bacteria.
Slightly edgier than other materials, concrete countertops have an industrial chic that fits right into a contemporary or industrial-type kitchen. It is an exceptionally versatile material – it can be cast in virtually any shape, and custom-tinted to any shade you desire. It also allows you to add unique inlays, and it stands up well to heavy use. Its main drawbacks are the fact that it is not as heat-resistant as some other materials, The main drawback of course, is the it is porous and therefore prone to stainfact that fingerprints show easily, that ing. It is also exceptionally heavy, so the material can dent, and it is on the cabinets holding it have to be very the upper end of the price spectrum. strong and well supported.

exactly like extraction cooker hoods, with the only difference being that they are combined with an external motor that can be installed on an outside wall, roof, or in a ceiling to reduce the noise in the kitchen to a minimum. Recirculation mode: These cooker hoods do not require ducting or a wall or roof vent, as they merely draw in vapours, pass them through various layers of filtration to remove the grease and odours, before returning the clean air to the room. SILENCE IS GOLDEN When choosing your cooker hood, Mercia recommends that you check out the noise levels of the unit: “This is especially important today, where kitchens often double as the social hub of the home. Miele’s cooker hoods for example, boast multiple layers of insulation, which helps to dramatically reduce noise levels ensuring a noise level of 40db (decibels). ENERGY EFFICIENCY A good quality cooker hood should offer excellent energy efficiency, without compromising in terms of power and efficiency. Says Mercia: “All of Miele’s cooker hoods for example are rated A+ or A for energy efficiency. In general the fan and the lighting account for the bulk of any cooker hood’s energy consumption, so you should look out for models with LED downlights, and ones that boast a DC motor.” Another feature to look out for is inter-hob-cooker hood communication, notes Mercia: “When you are cooking, your focus should be on what you are doing, and not on operating your cooker hood efficiently. Miele’s Con@cativity 2.0 is able to achieve optimum extraction of kitchen vapours and odours, while also saving energy. CABINETRY TRENDS
In recent years, kitchen cabinetry has undergone major transformations – a rapid change in tastes and advancements in technology has given rise to a wide variety of styles and finishes. Going forward, the general trends point to customisation – when it comes to colour, finish and overall design, homeowners want something that reflects their unique sense of style and personal tastes. Here are the top 10 cabinetry trends that are shaping kitchens today: CUSTOM COLOURS: More than ever, homeowners are looking for kitchen cabinetry that offers interest, personality and stands out from the crowd. Using colour is one of the most effective ways of achieving this. Alternatively, you can create monotone cabinetry, but create interest by mixing it up with various textures – for example high-gloss lacquered top cabinetry, with matt base cabinetry. FLIPPING AND SLIDING: Traditionally, cabinetry has comprised the standard 90-degree hinged wall cabinet. However, today, there are two new styles that are making headway in the world of kitchen cabinetry – namely sliding and flip doors. Sliding doors slide to the side, overlapping with their neighbouring doors fronts, while flip doors open upwards on specialised hydraulic hinges. These cabinetry doors are an excellent solution for small kitchens, as they don’t open outwards and therefore don’t require added space for the door clearance. As a general rule of thumb, these

OPEN SHELVING: Open shelving is becoming increasingly popular in modern kitchen design. It has plenty of benefits – it introduces a light and airy feel, it’s efficient in that you can easily access what you need without having to open any doors, it is space saving and affordable. However, it also comes with its own set of drawbacks, one of the main ones is that everything is out in the open and on display, so you have to be thoughtful about what you place on these shelves. Every utensil, bowl, glass or grocery stored on open shelving will impact the overall look of your kitchen. As such, ideally, you should have a mix of open shelving and cabinetry – so that you can reduce the clutter on the shelves down to a few carefully selected pieces. OVENS OVENS ARE A CRUCIAL ELEMENT IN ANY KITCHEN – READ ON FOR INFORMATION ON THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF OVENS CURRENTLY ON THE MARKET. The oven is one of the most expensive appliances in the kitchen, and as such, it is advisable to do some research before you invest in one. Mercia de Jager, from leading kitchen appliance manufacturer, Miele, says that before you start looking, it is important to understand the difference between the various types of ovens that you can choose from: “Currently, there are a number of ovens to choose from – each with its own set of benefits and features.” CONVECTION OVENS Very simply put, a convection oven is a regular electric oven with radiant heating elements, but it also has a fan and exhaust system that blows hot air in the oven cavity around the food. The hot air that surrounds food ensures that the food cooks faster, and more evenly, since the hot air is circulated and this helps even out any temperature variance. Convection cooking is also better at browning, says Mercia: “Convection ovens create a dry atmosphere that caramelises the sugars faster when roasting, so foods like meats and vegetables for example, get browner, but the interiors stay moist.” Unique features to look out for:
Handleless design: Imagine an oven that can open via touch – one without handles that blends seamlessly with your handleless cabinetry. It also opens softly into a 90° position and the movement is cushioned. Miele’s Touch2Open technology and SoftOpen achieve just that. Energy efficiency: Any modern oven worth its salt should boast a minimum A-rating for energy efficiency. A large percentage of Miele cookers and ovens are categorised in energy efficiency class A+. This protects the environment and your household budget.
Added moisture: Perfect baking and roasting results can be achieved by adding moisture. The bursts of steam in Miele’s Moisture Plus mode for example, ensures that meat becomes tender and succulent and acquires an appe- Catalytic cleaning: Miele ovens tising browned crust, while bread and with PerfectClean for example, have rolls taste as if fresh from the bakery. an additional catalytic liner at the back of the oven and in the sides. Pyrolytic cleaning: Pyrolytic cleaning is an automatic process in which residue in the oven is incinerated to ash at a very high temperature. This makes arduous scrubbing and abrasive cleaners a thing of the past. STEAM OVENS As the name suggests, steam ovens use steam, instead of simply radiant heat, to cook food. While conventional ovens can dry food out, with steam ovens moisture is never in short supply. Both heat and humidity have a significant effect on cooking – water molecules conduct heat more efficiently than regular air, thus adding steam to the mix results in quicker results. This not only saves time, but it also helps to better preserve the vitamins and minerals in your food. And that’s not the only benefit, says

Mercia: “The humidity in the oven helps prevent the water in your food from evaporating, which in turn keeps it from drying out. This means juicier chicken, flakier pastries, and better bread. It also means you can make foods like rice or steamed veggies that would typically never see the inside of an oven, or reheat leftovers without robbing them of moisture.”
A non-stick finish: Cleaning an oven with non-stick interiors is very easy. DIGITAL RECIPES
The same antennas also provide the Dialog oven with feedback on the amount of energy that has been absorbed by food. As a result, all the various items in the oven are cooked to perfection and all at once.
For a classic loaf of bread and the roasted aromas in meat, M Chef technology always combines with radiant heat. In this respect, the Dialog oven is ideally equipped as it offers many features of Miele’s flagship cooking products, including a user-friendly M Touch display and pyrolytic self-cleaning.
Alongside food preparation videos and shopping lists, the app also allows the parameters of a recipe to be transferred directly to the machine. Says Mercia: “This function puts users in direct contact with Miele’s laboratory kitchens – tested recipes which meet with their approval are available as downloads for budding chefs virtually immediately.”
M CHEF WITH RADIANT HEAT A further significant advantage of M Chef accrues from the fact that food is cooked volumetrically, explains Mercia: “For instance, a fillet of meat is cooked uniformly pink throughout; from
ELEGANT ILLUMINATION
The Miele app transfers recipe parameters straight to the Dialog oven, taking cooking into a new era. This connectivity promises inspiration and additional cooking pleasure. concepts: Gourmet Units and Intensity. Gourmet Units serve as a unit of energy applied to food, whereby one Gourmet Unit corresponds to one kilojoule. Intensity settings are “high”, “medium” and “gentle”. For most foodstuffs, “high” is the correct choice; “gentle” is the ideal setting for delicate dishes such as soufflés for example. You can also use the “gentle” setting to defrost dishes in the Dialog oven, that before were too delicate to defrost using a microwave.
COOKING CREATIVITY Use of this new appliance is made simpler by automatic programmes, without stifling the users’ own creativity. For greater individuality, there are two options open to experienced chefs: Gourmet Pro is intended for users with a certain amount of experience and those who like to experiment. In this instance, all parameters such as

Gourmet Assistant supports the chef by suggesting settings dependent on the type and quantity of food to ensure excellent results. The Dialog oven is due to be launched in European markets in 2018, and it is expected to be available on South African shores in 2019.

UPGRADING TO ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES CAN ACCOUNT FOR UP TO 30% OF A HOME’S ENERGY USAGE, SO CHOOSING ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES IS A BUDGETING IMPERATIVE.
The simple truth is that upgrading to more efficient appliances can save you energy, and a lot of money in the long run. So says Mercia De Jager from leading appliance manufacturer, Miele, who goes on to add: “When it comes time to replace your old appliances with new ones, it is essential to think about both the purchase price and the energy requirements of the appliance in question. “Although energy efficient models usually cost more, they will save you lots of energy and money over the course of the appliance’s life-cycle, so the initial spend is actually a really good investment.”

thanks to the advanced and highly efficient wash technology from Miele, the cycle temperature can be reduced to 20°C or even to “Cold” in most programmes. If laundry is only slightly soiled, these programmes offer an energy-efficient alternative.” Mercia says that water consumption is another important consideration: “All Miele washing machines feature intelligent automatic load recognition, which analyses the weight of the current load and adjusts the water and electricity required accordingly.”
Mercia says it is important to look beyond the rating: “Look at the size of the model, as smaller models use less energy. The estimated kWh/annum matters most, as it dictates what it will use over 1 year – seeing that you never switch your fridge or freezer off, it makes for an easy way to compare Tumble dryers: Mercia says that tumthe efficiency of different models.” ble dryers can be efficient: ”Miele’s heat pump tumble dryers for examWashing machines: Energy labels ple, achieve an A++ energy efficienon washing machines only compare cy rating. Other useful features to look for on a dishwasher include automatic load recognition, and a smart start function. Ovens: When looking at the energy labels on an oven, it is best to look for a kWh figure for the electricity used per cycle to heat the oven. Says Mercia: “A large percentage of Miele ovens have an A+-rating. Miele also offers smaller 43- and 48-litre capacity ovens, which are also more efficient.

This caters for the individual needs of Miele customers, allowing them to accommodate for instance tall stemware, large platters or bulky pans and dishes both conveniently and securely. However, Liam notes that the G 6000 EcoFlex dishwashers take this flexibility to the next level: “The new 3D cutlery drawer features two hinged rows of spikes in the central section. FEATURE WALLS – DO’S AND DON’TS
Do synchronise your feature wall with the rest of the room. Don’t dishonour the existing design scheme and add something that is very disjointed from the rest of the space. COLOUR IN THE KITCHEN DISCOVER THE LATEST KITCHEN COLOUR The kitchen is cementing itself as the central meeting place in the home, and as it does, it has become a key place for the use of colour. Colour can be used in any kitchen décor scheme to add energy, create an inviting ambience, demarcate specific areas, produce an eye-catching focal point, and generally add life and wonder into the space in question. Here is an overview on the trendiest colour schemes in kitchens today:
for high-ticket items in the kitchen, such as cabinetry and appliances, as these items are not easily rotated out each season, but instead, being grey, they retain their integrity of style, and the accessories can be changed to update with the ever changing seasons and trends. Miele’s stunning ArtLine range of appliances is available in Graphite Grey to feed this ever-growing love affair with the colour grey.
MINIMALIST PASTELS Getting their inspiration directly from the retro ‘50s, today there is a new wave of minimalist pastels in town that are really making waves. Soft, washed pastels such as mint greens, sandy pinks and delphinium blues have the ability to totally reinvent modern design – adding an inviting gentleness to any room they grace. Modern pastel tones
BLACK IS BACK It seems that everybody is on board with the sleek and sexy appeal of all-black rooms, and the kitchen is no different. With Miele’s gorgeous Obsidian Black range of appliances, an all-black kitchen is really easy to achieve. And although the delicious moodiness of an all-black kitchen does make a bold and dramatic statement, it may not be to everyone’s taste. Whether you opt for an all-black kitchen with black walls, tiles, cabinets and finishes, or whether you have opted to pair any one of those with stainless steel or wood for example, there is no doubt that a black backdrop makes a beautifully inspiring place to cook. SHADES OF GREY If you would like something that is not too neutral, or overwhelming, then grey is the colour for you. Grey has become the modern neutral of our times – in the décor world, it is commonly referred to as “the new beige”, and it has taken over as the neutral tone of choice for a classic, ever-relevant colour. What makes grey so popular is that it is almost like a colourless hue – technically, it is the halfway point between white and black, which makes it a completely neutral tone. And being a complete neutral allows it to pair perfectly with almost any other hue on the colour spectrum. As a result, grey makes an excellent colour choice KITCHEN INSPIRATIONS BY MIELE 2018

COLOUR TRENDS
are ideal for people who don’t want to commit to bright, overpowering colours, but want something more than just basic neutrals. These gorgeously soft and creamy tones pair best as a complement to all-white kitchens – amalgamating to create a modern, sophisticated, yet gently inviting space that is easy on the eye. WHITE WASH All-white kitchens are not new to the scene, but their popularity never seems to wane. Perhaps it is the fact that an

all-white kitchen makes a room appear light, airy and bigger than it is. Or maybe it’s because it is very difficult to go wrong with an all-white colour scheme in the kitchen. Or it could be because an all-white colour scheme boasts a certain sense of timelessness, that doesn’t date and you won’t tire of too quickly. Whatever the reason – all-white kitchens remain very sought after, which is why Miele’s Generation 6000 range of appliances are available in BrilliantWhite. What has changed with all-white kitchen colour schemes over the years is the addition of different textures into the composition to create a sense of visual interest. Think of high-gloss cabinetry, paired with textured white wall tiles, a marble countertop, and white cement flooring – all white, but in various different textures for added appeal. MIGHTY METALLIC
for example. However, never before has it been so widely used for other applications as well. Whether you have chosen metallic light fittings, tiles, a countertop with metallic flecks, or you have selected solid metal backsplashes – the sky is the limit when it comes to including metallics in the kitchen. However, today, it is not just about stainless steel – we are also seeing a lot of rose gold, copper, gold and brass finishes as well. Remember that with metallics, less is definitely more. Stay tuned – this trend is going to be around for a long time.
deep forest green, earthy olive, rich and decadent emerald green, and retro renditions of bright green in the kitchen. This trend adds a certain sense of sophistication and a modern flair to any kitchen design. Green kitchen islands and cabinetry make a bold trending statement, or for a more subtle approach, you can opt to use smaller pops of green via carefully chosen décor accents, lighting, glassware or furniture, such as bar stools for example.
Alternatively, you can take the colour and jazz your kitchen up by adding a Metallics are currently incredibly trendy collection of indoor plants for a touch of throughout the home, and especially GOING GREEN genuine greenery. BULTHAUP
VISIONS OF FUNCTIONALITY & AESTHETICS With over 60 years of experience in producing high quality kitchens, the bulthaup story began with the German tradition of fine craftsmanship and precision engineering in kitchen cabinetry. These elements then became intertwined with the vision of function and aesthetics as originated by the Bauhaus movement and the Ulm School of Design. Since then, bulthaup has built its reputation as the top luxury brand in the field by delivering bespoke kitchen furniture engineered to exact specifications of the highest quality and craftsmanship, coupled with a design vision that delivers classic, timeless designs that stay modern, giving each kitchen a long life. Combining luxury with precision is a unique aspect of bulthaup’s DNA. Its product lines have re-invented the design of the kitchen itself, and it has
won numerous awards over its history. At bulthaup, the goal is to always balance these factors based on the unique needs of the client who provides the compass for the overall design. Because of this, every bulthaup kitchen is one-of-a-kind. Every aspect of the food preparation and entertainment aspect is thought through and implemented into the design. bulthaup specialise in thinking through and realising that vision precisely, from the over-arching design, to the ergonomics of where appliances are placed, the storage of cutlery and glassware, and the size and location of the pantry and scullery. All bulthaup clients have very detailed pictures in mind for their kitchens and often budget more than the general rule of thumb (10% of the value of the home) to realise those dreams.

When it comes to renovating a kitchen, choosing a countertop can be a difficult decision. The countertop is often the largest surface area in the kitchen, and has a major impact on the look and feel of the room. Now there is another surface to choose from: sintered sintered stone slabs known as Neolith. It is the next generation of countertops, with many colour options to choose from, and a large slab size that can be cut to fit into any custom size. It is also stain-, heat- and scratch-resistant,and very easy to clean – making it the perfect choice for kitchen countertops. The Neolith brand is the outcome of the latest research and development processes in the industry. In 2011, in Spain, the Neolith brand was launched as high-end compact surface with revolutionary physical and technical features. It was named Neolith, as the term means “new stone”, and this refers to the process of how it is made. Neolith combines the best natural raw materials with state-of-the-art technology to create a high-tech slab. It is created through proprietary sinterisation technology, exposing minerals and other raw materials to extremely high pressure and temperature (over 1200°C), resembling the way natural
stone forms over thousands of years, but replicated in just a few hours. The process gives Neolith outstanding physical and mechanical properties in terms of compaction, resistance and durability.
NEOLITH
A REVOLUTIONARY NEW MATERIAL
Neolith has near-zero porosity, making the product hygienic, stain-resistant, easy to clean and impervious to chemicals. The product is also wear-, scratchand heat-resistant, and its colours, derived from natural base, do not vary when exposed to UV rays. Additionally, the product is lightweight and easy to install, making Neolith suitable for virtually every indoor and outdoor surface. It is 100% natural, as it is composed of a variety of raw material, including clays, feldspar, silica and natural mineral oxides. Furthermore, it is completely recyclable – making it a very environmentally friendly choice of building material. The various style collections are a result of Neolith’s innovative Digital Design (NDD) decoration technique. This system has revolutionised Neolith patternsand is pushing the boundaries of what colours and textures can be achieved with compact surfaces. Neolith South Africa has branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town, but it can supply product countrywide.

HANDCRAFTED LUXURY Founded 25 years ago, Slavin was born out of a desire to break away from the stereotypical norms of standard kitchen thinking. It had to be a factory small enough to offer bespoke and individualised service, but big enough to be able to deliver on a broad spectrum of projects. Since its conception however, Slavin was met with such success that the company had to move to its present factory, which also boasts one of the largest kitchen showrooms in Gauteng. In today’s day and age, the kitchen is the heart of the home – a refuge from the fast pace of modern living. This space needs to balance the style and passion that reflect the individual taste preferences of its owner and the home that it is housed in, as well as meet the functional require-

Creating a kitchen-living space with the ability to inspire those who use and visit is the ultimate measure of success for Slavin – any kitchen created by Slavin will be one that is capable of arousing deep feelings and desires, and offer a living space from which those who use it can draw inspiration for years to come. To make this a reality, each and every Slavin designer has graduated with a recognised and relevant qualification, and is fully conversant with up-to-date knowledge of materials, appliances, as well as the latest design, manufacturing and installation techniques. SPOTLIGHT JOINERY
SHINING THE SPOTLIGHT ON QUALITY Beyond doubt, the kitchen is the most important room in any house. The selection of appropriate materials and hardware is imperative. The carcasses of Spotlight Joinery’s kitchens are made from a wide range of materials with options to suit a variety of styles and layout. Through constant testing and years of experience, the company has selected the best brands of hardware for hinges, drawers, lifts and specialised mechanisms. The value of European-made hardware in a high quality kitchen is paramount. Every kitchen is individually designed to fit each client’s practical requirements, unique taste preferences, as well as ensuring that the space at hand is used as efficiently as possible. The result – a gorgeously crafted, high-quality, durable and ergonomic space that is as beautiful to look at as it is to use. However, Spotlight Joinery understands
that the kitchen cannot be looked at in isolation from the rest of the home, and that other architectural materials, such as flooring, tiles, wall colours, and so on, as well as the chosen appliances and fittings, need to be taken into account in the design process. Through the company’s wide selection of hand-picked suppliers, Spotlight Joinery is able to supply, store and deliver leading brands such as Miele for example, amongst others. Since 2007, Spotlight Joinery has established the brand as being synonymous with design leadership, quality manufacture and levels of service rarely seen. It chooses to use materials that are sustainable and have a low carbon footprint. The aim and vision of Spotlight Joinery is simple and one that has remained constant since its inception – to deliver the best quality joinery on time.
