SOUTHERN KRUGER H4-1 SABIE RIVER ROAD The main attractions of this road are the scenery, the abundance of game and the Sabie River it follows. Sabisa is the Swati word for ‘frightening’ and refers to the dangers of crossing this river with its slippery rocks and dangerous crocodiles. The views onto the riverbed are spectacular. Elephant, buffalo and grazers regularly cross the road on their way to water. Lion sightings often occur, and even the elusive leopard is regularly seen. The riverine forest attracts a plethora of birds, shy bushbuck, monkeys and baboons, while the thicket vegetation into the interior is ideal habitat for black rhino. Hotspots are the high-water bridge over the Sabie, the Nkuhlu Picnic Site, Lubyelubye River crossing with the occasional appearance of sandstone favoured by lion and klipspringer, and the popular Sunset Dam where people spend hours watching birds, game and other people.

H3 MALELANE GATE TO H1-1 This drive initially takes you through a scenic mountainous area covered by broad-leaved vegetation, before it flattens out into gently undulating kudu country, dotted with intermittent impala herds and the occasional predator. Look out for hyena that den under culverts, and wild dog that are seen from time to time. A hotspot is the bridge over the Mlambane River where visibility is good and elephant, lion, leopard and other game often linger. Don’t ignore the turn-off to Renosterpan,

The road is steeped in history, being one of the first two-tracks into the park built by ranger CR de Laporte. Pioneering traders Joào Albasini (who was Portuguese) and Sardinelli (a Greek) had trading posts here long before it was a park, and the Battle of Gomondwane was one of the first skirmishes between traders and Shangaan warriors.

Nevertheless, he has spent the past year under lockdown hard at work editing and, more recently, promoting his new film for Netflix, The Midnight Sky, which he stars in and directs. It’s sort of a post-apocalyptic sci-fi story set in the future, in which he plays an astronomer stranded on the North Pole, trying to warn a spaceship full of astronauts not to return to earth, which has become toxic and uninhabitable. Like a lot of what he does, it combines entertainment and seriousness, reflecting on some of what the pandemic has taught us without being too explicit.

n a low-interest environment, such as currently experienced in South Africa, it can become
more and more difficult to live on a fixed income basis. There are, however, ways in which one can manage one’s money more effectively in order to optimise its value. Here optimisation does not necessarily mean taking more risk with your money or investing in other asset classes. The route is much easier and much simpler than one might think. The secret lies in planning, and the core to the success of planning effectively lies in self-discipline. Careful planning and taking cognisance of spending habits

RECIPES
Place on paper towel to drain and cool. Using a knife, make a small incision in each dumpling and pipe a generous dollop of the roasted cauliflower purée inside the dumpling. (Keep some purée for serving.)
FOR ROSEMARY CREAM: Sweat the shallots and garlic in butter in a pan, keeping the lid on, until they’re soft and translucent. Add the rosemary and cook for 2 minutes. Deglaze by slowly adding the sherry over a low heat, and reduce until the pan is dry. Add the white wine and reduce by two-thirds. Pour in the cream and reduce by two-thirds again, until you have a thick sauce. Strain through a sieve to remove rosemary and season to taste.

Cook the ravioli for 3–5 minutes (when the ravioli is ready, it will float to the surface). Using a slotted spoon, remove and set aside. Gently add the cooked ravioli to the hot mushroom sauce and ensure that they’re evenly coated.
SERVING SUGGESTION: Portion out ravioli parcels and sauce into four serving bowls, top with the finely sliced duck breast (we kept it whole for the photo, previous page) and garnish with fresh herbs. THE BOMBER MAFIA: A STORY SET IN WAR BY MALCOLM GLADWELL In the years before the Second World War, in a sleepy air force base in central Alabama, a small group of renegade pilots put forth a radical idea. What if we made bombing so accurate that wars could be fought entirely from the air? What if we could make the brutal clashes between armies on the ground a thing of the past? This book tells the story of what happened when that dream was put to the test. The Bomber Mafia follows the stories of a reclusive Dutch genius and his homemade computer, Winston Churchill’s forbidding best friend, a team of pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard, a brilliant pilot who sang vaudeville tunes to his crew, and the bomber commander, Curtis Emerson LeMay, who would order the bloodiest attack of the Second World War. In this tale of innovation and obsession, Gladwell asks: what happens when technology and best intentions collide in the heat of war? And what is the price of progress? 32
