The single item in this issue I’m most excited about is the opening of the Javett Art Centre in Pretoria on Heritage Day. Finally, the country’s interior has an architectural landmark filled with art to rival its counterparts in Cape Town. As if the showstopping Mapungubwe Collection – SA’s crown jewels – getting the showcase it deserves wasn’t enough, the huge mural by Alexis Preller, Discovery, which has been relocated and is being restored after years of being hidden in the empty Transvaal Provincial Administration building, is the cherry on top!

READ THIS: THE TESTAMENTS BY MARGARET ATWOOD Margaret Atwood’s dystopian masterpiece, The Handmaid’s Tale, has become a modern classic – and now she brings the iconic story to a dramatic conclusion in this riveting sequel. More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets. As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.

he Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a sovereign Arab state in western Asia, on the East Bank of

the Jordan River. The Dead Sea lies along its western borders and the country has a small shoreline on the Red Sea in its extreme southwest, but is otherwise landlocked. Jordan is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe. Jordan is spectacular, safe, uncrowded and friendly, a totally underrated destination with some of the oldest cities on earth where people have been living for more than 6 500 years. A visit to Jordan is an experience far beyond expectations, which will reveal ancient history, stunning landscapes and great diversity. The ancient city of Jerash, 6 500 years old, is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Truly breath-taking are the public squares and baths, paved streets lined with pillars, grand temples and a hippodrome where gladiators fought. The locals enjoy putting on a show of chariot races for visitors. And then there is Petra, the iconic lost pink city, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Because of its position at the ancient crossroads linking southern Arabia, China and India with Rome, Egypt, Syria and Greece, Petra’s trade in silk and spice made it rich and powerful. Nothing prepares you for your first sighting of Petra. Its huge facades carved into the rocks take the breath away around each corner. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rockface by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people

Yes. When you get to my age you will understand [laughs]. But at this moment in life there is only space for the truth. Especially if you’ve had a heart attack, you see the face of death very close to you, and you say, ‘Oh my god, this is it?’ I remember having the heart attack and thinking, ‘Really? ONE OF THE THEMES OF PAIN AND GLORY IS RECONCILIATION – CAN YOU TALK A BIT ABOUT THAT? AB: I think that’s where the movie touched the hearts of people, because we all have our own circles that are incomplete in our life. The premise of this strategy is to de-risk your portfolio at (or even before) retirement, in order to avoid any big losses. Investors choose less volatile fixed-income assets (such as cash and bonds) as they move into retirement in order to minimise volatility or their risk of capital loss over the short term. One of the major drawbacks of this approach is that it limits your investment’s growth potential exactly at the time when your retirement capital is typically at its highest-ever value. Diarrhea, constipation, bloating and the like are often caused by over-indulgence or eating something that doesn’t agree with us, and quickly clear up of their own accord. Distressing and unpleasant conditions such as these can however become chronic – and that can be caused by a bacterial imbalance in the intestines. Some groups of bacteria can cause acute or chronic illness, but another group of bacteria offers protective and nutritive properties. Imbalances between the two can lead to a number of unpleasant conditions such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, IBS, allergies, poor digestion and poor nutrient absorption. In laboratory investigations, some strains of of LAB (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) have demonstrated anti-mutagenic effects thought to be due to their ability to bind with heterocyclic amines, which are carcinogenic substances formed in burnt red meat. The two most important groups of friendly intestinal flora, or probiotics, are Lactobacilli – found mainly in the small intestine, and Bifidobacteria – found mainly in the colon. TALKING TO STRANGERS BY MALCOLM GLADWELL Talking to Strangers is all about what happens when we encounter people we don’t know, why it often goes awry, and what it says about us. How do we make sense of the unfamiliar? Why are we so bad at judging someone, reading a face, or detecting a lie? Why do we so often fail to ‘get’ other people? Through a series of puzzles, encounters and misunderstandings, from little-known stories to infamous legal cases, Gladwell takes us on a journey through the unexpected. You will read about the spy who spent years undetected at the highest levels of the Pentagon, the man who saw through the fraudster Bernie Madoff, the suicide of the poet Sylvia Plath and the false conviction of Amanda Knox. You will discover that strangers are never simple.

QUICHOTTE BY SALMAN RUSHDIE In a tour-de-force that is both an homage to an immortal work of literature and a modern masterpiece about the quest for love and family, Booker Prize-winning, internationally bestselling author Salman Rushdie has created a dazzling Don Quixote for the modern age. Inspired by the Cervantes classic, Sam DuChamp, mediocre writer of spy thrillers, creates Quichotte, a courtly, addled salesman obsessed with television, who falls in impossible love with the TV star Salman R. Together with his (imaginary) son Sancho, Quichotte sets off on a picaresque quest across America to prove worthy of her hand, gallantly braving the tragicomic perils of an age where

4

anything can happen. Meanwhile his creator, in a midlife crisis, has equally urgent challenges of his own. Just as Cervantes wrote Don Quixote to satirise the culture of his time, Rushdie takes the reader on a wild ride through a country on the verge of moral and spiritual collapse, with the kind of storytelling magic that is the hallmark of his work. The fully realised lives of DuChamp and Quichotte intertwine in a profoundly human quest for love and a wickedly entertaining portrait of an age in which fact is so often indiscernible from fiction. • WWW.SILVERDIGEST.CO.ZA

Mushroom Stroganoff CRUNCHY CORNICHONS, FRAGRANT CAPERS, CREAMY WHISKY SAUCE & PARSLEY

• 400g mixed mushrooms • 1 red onion • 2 cloves of garlic

SERVES 2

• 4 silverskin pickled onions

20 MINUTES

• 2 cornichons • 4 sprigs of fresh flat-leaf parsley • olive oil • 1 tablespoon baby capers • 50ml whisky • smoked paprika • 80g half-fat crème fraîche Get all the prep done before you start cooking: trim the mushrooms, tearing up any larger ones and leaving any smaller ones whole, peel and finely slice the red onion and garlic, and finely slice the pickled onions and cornichons. Pick and roughly chop the parsley leaves, finely chopping the stalks. Place a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat, throw in the mushrooms and red onions, shake into one layer, then dry-fry for 5 minutes (this will bring out the nutty flavour), stirring regularly. Drizzle in 1 tablespoon of oil, then add the garlic, pickled onions, cornichons, parsley stalks and capers. After 3 minutes, pour in the whisky, tilt the pan to carefully flame, or light with a long match (watch your eyebrows!), and, once the flames subside, add ¼ of a teaspoon of paprika, the crème fraîche and parsley, then toss together. Loosen with a splash of boiling water to a saucy consistency, and season to taste with

like flush door handles make the bodywork seem more smoothly sculpted, and Land Rover’s designers and engineers have worked hard to reduce the exterior panel gaps. Other details like the sweeping directional indicators and super-slim LED headlamps add to the overall sophistication, as does the striking black accent stretching across the rear. But from the outside, the Evoque certainly hasn’t lost its identity. Inside, the surfaces are uncluttered and the simplicity and purity of the exterior finds expression in sleek-lined minimalist design. It’s luxurious, comfortable, calm and serene in the cabin, and slightly bigger than before, even though its footprint is almost identical to its predecessor, thanks to a compact new suspension design. New incar technologies, such as the twin touchscreen system, are faster than before, too. And a bonus is the fact that software updates are wireless, which means your infotainment and vehicle systems are upgraded and improved over time without having to take it back to the shop.
