Restoration Specialist Classic cars are extremely popular right now. From the 1920s Ford Model‐T to hot rods of the 1950s to the Ferrari and Porsche models of the 1980s, many car enthusiasts pick up these vehicles either as a hobby or an investment. This means there is a high demand for restoration specialists. Your job will consist of restoring cars the way they were originally constructed and maintained or restoring cars, and installing the latest technologies and innovations that bring these cars into the modern era. This position requires a basic high school education with specialized or on‐the‐job training like other technician jobs. It also helps to understand car history.

Flight Simulator Software Development From recreational aviation to commercial airline training, flight‐training devices (FTD) are now standard throughout all aviation segments. Today’s most advanced flight‐ training devices replicate the look, sound, and feel of actual aircraft flight decks to the degree that the Federal Aviation Administration deems them acceptable alternatives to real flight time for many training situations. Although most of these systems are used to replicate aircraft and helicopters, the sky is no longer the limit for this field: experienced software engineers are also in demand to develop training systems for private space capsules.

They’re the ones who make the project a reality by carrying out a wide range of tasks at the construction site. The role doesn’t require formal training or specialized skills, and instead, it mainly involves on‐the‐job training. The job description of a construction worker may include loading and unloading materials, digging trenches, clearing and preparing a site before and after the construction, and so on. Laborers may specialize in specific construction types, such as digging tunnels, building construction, infrastructure construction, digging mine shafts, and others.

Environmental Science and Protection Technician These jobs involve both field and laboratory tasks to ensure that renewable installations and energy producing facilities don’t cause unintended damage to the environment. You would also be involved in monitoring all forms of pollution to assess the impact on the health of workers and the general population. This is probably one of the most fulfilling renewable energy jobs you can ever have. A degree in environmental engineering is the most common minimum educational requirement.

Electrical Lineworker Electricity demand has increased dramatically in recent years. With that increased demand comes the need for additional infrastructure, including electrical transmission and distribution systems. An electric utility lineman installs, maintains, and repairs electrical distribution and transmission systems. This includes conduits, cables, wires, and related equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switches. They also dig holes and set poles using cranes and power equipment. A lineman works much of the time outdoors and responds to weather‐related problems with transmission and distribution lines, sometimes in the middle of the night and very challenging weather conditions.

Medical Illustrator

Artistic types have many options in the healthcare industry. Medical illustrators draw pictures of anatomy, abnormalities, and other illustrations for textbooks or to present during legal proceedings. They illustrate difficult things to introduce to a classroom or in a courtroom. Nowadays, most medical illustrators use computer software instead of hand drawing pictures. Since the work is so detailed, many medical illustrators specialize in a specific part of the body. A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement, though many employers prefer to hire only those with a master’s degree in medical illustration. There are only five accredited programs for this specialization, so competition for these positions can be challenging.

Forensic Scientist Forensic scientists translate crime scene observations and evidence to help criminal and civil investigations. On TV, forensic scientists make arrests and question and interrogate suspects, but these scientists spend most of their time in the lab in real life. They collect physical evidence (such as fingerprints, blood, and weapons) to gather DNA and ballistic information from the crime scene and analyze that evidence in the lab. Forensic scientists also photograph, sketch and reconstruct crime scenes. Forensic scientists might also be called to testify as expert witnesses to explain the evidence, the results of the analysis or test (such as pathology or toxicology findings), and provide relevance of this information to the case in question.

NATURAL APPRECIATION FOR ANIMALS

COMMITMENT TO LIFELONG LEARNING

e n i c i d e m y r a n i r Look around you. . . vete Hello!, I’m Shannon Pendleton, Office Manager at Dogwood Veterinary Hospital and Laser Center. Do you want to work with COMPANION, FOOD, or ZOO Animals? Is SCIENCE one of your favorite subjects? Are you interested in helping ANIMALS THRIVE? VETERINARY MEDICINE might be the career for you!

24

Whether they’re pets, livestock or working animals, animals matter to individuals and society. Every community needs veterinary professionals to provide animal health care, but veterinarians also do many other kinds of jobs. They make sure the nation’s food supply is safe. They work to control the spread of diseases. They conduct research that helps both animals and humans. Veterinarians are at the forefront of protecting the public’s health and welfare. Working as a veterinarian isn’t the only career path in veterinary medicine, though. For individuals interested in working with and helping animals, but don’t want to attend veterinarian school, a veterinarian assistant career or laboratory animal caretaker career may be the perfect solution. Veterinarian assistants and laboratory animal caretakers, under the supervision of a veterinarian, do many of the basic care tasks in caring for sick or injured animals. If the idea of a career in veterinary medicine makes you feel warm and fuzzy, explore the available educational and career paths in the Coweta Works virtual career expo!

Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation

Those with a passion for wildlife conservation may find their calling in animal rescue. Animal rescue jobs are so much more than caring for injured and orphaned animals. While ensuring these animals are rehabilitated, planning is also necessary for their eventual release back into the wild. Other animal rescue career opportunities are available for overseeing education and volunteer programs. While a college degree isn’t required to work in animal rescue, it is encouraged. Not only can a degree open many doors career-wise, but it may also be necessary for some higher-level roles in medicine and research. Animal rescue workers must be willing to work in a variety of environments. Time will be spent outdoors when on a rescue and when it comes time for release in the wild. Therapy, surgeries, and other procedures will be completed in an animal

center.

Zoologist Zoology is another one of the many careers with animals that have a variety of specialties. With each specialty comes varying responsibilities. Some zoologists may focus on how global changes are impacting wildlife. Others may focus on the diet and migration of a species. By studying the habits of wildlife, zoologists have an important and influential role in the conservation of wildlife, particularly with animals nearing extinction. Most entry-level animal jobs in zoology require a college degree. Many zoologists opt to take a program specific to zoology while others may choose a broader program of study such as biology. Post-college, zoologists may find themselves working with animals at a zoo or out studying wildlife in their natural habitats. Others may prefer working in a museum or educational facility with students and the public.

MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING are wide open

and may be a great fit for you!

Almost everything around you was created through the expertise of engineers, designers, and manufacturing employees. The manufacturing industry not only employs nearly 10 percent of the country but it’s also a leader in technology and innovation. And it only continues to grow. Most manufacturing companies are willing to do on‐the‐ job training and require no previous work experience. This is a great way to build your resume and develop technical abilities. You will also have the opportunity to learn many valuable and transferable skills, such as time management, teamwork, and problem‐solving. Not only does the manufacturing industry provide many foot‐in‐the‐door opportunities, but it also provides many different fields of interest. From aerospace, food production, and textiles to pharmaceuticals, manufacturing spans the spectrum. You can choose to work in an area you’re passionate about or one that makes you curious. If this gets your gears turning, check out the world of manufacturing and engineering in the Coweta Works virtual career expo!

the career for you!

Coweta County is a wonderful community full of givers and helpers. But, you need more than just passion for a cause when you work with a non-profit or association. Whether you are tasked with conducting surveys, working directly with the community, or writing a policy paper, you need to build both the hard and the soft skills for the job. Working on-the-ground is not the only way to make an impact. There are also office jobs such as a domain expert, campaigner, fundraiser, advocacy lead, and researcher — jobs that support the planning and organization of social programs. A degree in the social sciences is not imperative to landing a role at a nonprofit. However, it’s critical you build up transferable skills to help you engage with diverse groups of stakeholders.

Nonprofit salaries are lower than corporate salaries — another factor that may ultimately impact your decision. Finally, know that solving a problem at a nonprofit can take years to implement and show results. You need to have patience and resilience.
