Do you like being outdoors? Do you like working with tools & large equipment? Do you earn good grades in math & science?

Then Agribusiness might be the right field for you!

AGRIBUSINESS WHAT IT TAKES • Entrepreneurial Spirit • Strong math and science skills • Interest in working with natural resources, such as livestock, plants, and timber • Management ability and problem-solving skills • Interest in seeing a product grow from start to finish

LOOK AROUND YOU! Agriculture surrounds you. From the food you eat, the clothes you wear, and the house you live in, agriculture is everywhere. Agriculture significantly impacts Georgia’s economy, the health of its citizens, and the beauty of its landscapes. If you want a career that takes you outdoors, consider a career in agriculture. By definition, Agribusiness is an industry engaged in farm production operations, manufacturing and distribution of farm equipment and supplies, and processing, storage, and distribution of farm commodities. Innovations in Agribusiness technology offer additional pathways to consider as different technologies develop that can be applied to solve challenges as the world population grows. 11

BEEKEEPER

Bees play a significant role in promoting and maintaining ecological diversity. Additionally, some species, like the honeybee, contribute substantially to agriculture, with crosspollination responsible for producing over 70 percent of the world’s crops. Unfortunately, bee populations have constantly been declining since the 20th century. For this reason, beekeeping has become a timely and vital career to pursue. While commercial beekeepers usually raise hives for the sale of honey, beeswax, propolis, and other consumer products, others specialize in the care and propagation of bees, including researching cross-breeding bee species to address ecological issues related to the population decline of bee species.

12

ANIMAL GENETICIST

Working within animal sciences, animal geneticists help the agriculture industry by addressing livestock-related issues, specifically its management and production. In particular, animal geneticists identify which genes give a specific species or breed superior characteristics. They then use this information to cross-breed species to create a new breed of more resilient animals or those with far more commercially desirable characteristics. A bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, genetics, or dairy science is usually required to become an animal geneticist.

Do you have excellent attention to detail? Do you have an interest in technology? Do motorized vehicles rev your engine?

Then Automotive & Aviation might be your path!

AUTOMOTIVE & AVIATION WHAT IT TAKES • Advanced mechanical skills • Ability to read, write, and communicate well • High level of detail • Problem-solving and creative thinking skills • Physical strength, agility, and manual dexterity

LOOK AROUND YOU!

Careers in transportation are found in a variety of places throughout our region. Almost everything we buy and use comes to Coweta by roadway, railway, airway, or waterway. Within the transportation field, there are a variety of careers to choose from, including automotive and aviation. The level of education required varies from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree. After completing high school, some students enter directly into the workforce. Some positions, such as a mechanic, may only require on-the-job or technical training. Other careers, such as maintenance director, recruiter, safety specialist, and marketing representative, require an associate’s degree. A bachelor’s degree may be necessary for safety or account manager positions. Coweta County has a growing need for automotive service and repair pros! If you have a knack for sales, a love of cars, or a skill with engines, you’ll find the advanced training you’ll need to start a career in this field right here at home. Whether you choose an educational pathway through the Central Educational Center or Newnan’s West Georgia Technical College, on-the-job training with Nissan of Newnan, or enroll in the Nissan Technician Training Academy, Automotive Technology is a rewarding career path!

AUTOMOTIVE & AVIATION RESTORATION SPECIALIST

FLIGHT SIMULATOR SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT Classic cars are extremely popular right now. From the 1920s Ford Model-T to the hot rods of the 1950s to the Ferrari and Porsche models of the 1980s, many car enthusiasts pick up these vehicles as a hobby or an investment. This means there is a high demand for restoration specialists. Your job will consist of restoring cars the way they were initially constructed and maintained or restoring cars and installing the latest technologies and innovations that bring these cars into the modern era. This position requires a primary high school education with specialized or on-the-job training like other technician jobs. It also helps to understand car history.

Flight-training devices (FTD) are standard throughout all aviation segments, from recreational to commercial airline training. Today’s most advanced flight-training devices replicate the look, sound, and feel of actual aircraft flight decks to the degree that the Federal Aviation Administration deems them acceptable alternatives to real flight time for many training situations. Although most of these systems are used to replicate aircraft and helicopters, the sky is no longer the limit for this field: experienced software engineers are also in demand to develop training systems for private space capsules.

CONSTRUCTION & HOME SERVICES SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLATION

CONSTRUCTION LABORER Construction laboring is the most popular role in the industry. This is the first job that comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘construction.’ Construction workers or laborers are the driving force behind building projects. They’re the ones who make the project a reality by carrying out a wide range of tasks at the construction site. The role doesn’t require formal training or specialized skills; instead, it mainly involves on-the-job training. The job description of a construction worker may include loading and unloading materials, digging trenches, clearing and preparing a site before and after the construction, and so on. Laborers may specialize in specific construction types, such as digging tunnels, building construction, infrastructure construction, and mine shafts. 18

Solar photovoltaic installers assemble, maintain, and manage solar panels placed on commercial and residential rooftops for solar energy creation. Several safety laws and standards need to be followed for these jobs. Installers also determine whether additional equipment or support structures are required to install solar panels correctly. They need to ensure complete protection of panels from the weather. Solar Photovoltaic Installation is one of the fastest-growing construction jobs in the US, with a projected growth rate of 104.9%.

Energy and Utilities might be the career for you!

ENERGY & UTILITIES WHAT IT TAKES

• Foundational skills in math & technical concepts • Satisfaction with teamwork • Leadership skills and desire for continuous improvement • Commitment to lifelong learning

LOOK AROUND YOU!

Energy exists to help people. Without it, your morning would look very different: no alarm clock, hot water, stove, or television. These comforts depend on natural gas, electricity, or oil to power them. Challenges lie ahead in reliably providing energy to a growing world while minimizing the impact on the environment. The industry relies on sharp minds and professionals who are eager to help. Careers in energy and utilities do not stop at technical and practical work. Like every other industry globally, these operations require processes, strategy, and budget management to keep everything running smoothly. Many management, finance, administration, and IT careers are available within energy and utility companies. 26

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & PROTECTION TECHNICIAN These jobs involve field and laboratory tasks to ensure that renewable installations and energy-producing facilities don’t cause unintended environmental damage. You would also be involved in monitoring all forms of pollution to assess the impact on the health of workers and the general population. This is probably one of the most fulfilling renewable energy jobs ever. A degree in environmental engineering is the most common minimum educational requirement.

Electricity demand has increased dramatically in recent years. With that increased demand comes additional infrastructure, including electrical transmission and distribution systems. An electric utility lineman installs, maintains, and repairs electrical distribution and transmission systems. This includes conduits, cables, wires, and equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switches. They also dig holes and set poles using cranes and power equipment. A lineman works much of the time outdoors and responds to weather-related problems with transmission and distribution lines, sometimes in the middle of the night and in very challenging weather conditions.

HEALTHCARE & WELLNESS MEDICAL ILLUSTRATOR

Artistic types have many options in the healthcare industry. Medical illustrators draw pictures of anatomy, abnormalities, and other illustrations for textbooks or to present during legal proceedings. They illustrate difficult things to introduce to a classroom or in a courtroom. Nowadays, most medical illustrators use computer software instead of drawing pictures by hand. Since the work is so detailed, many medical illustrators specialize in a specific body part. A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement, though many employers prefer to hire only those with a master’s degree in medical illustration. There are only five accredited programs for this specialization, so competition for these positions can be challenging.

FORENSIC SCIENTIST Forensic scientists translate crime scene observations and evidence to help criminal and civil investigations. On TV, forensic scientists make arrests and question and interrogate suspects, but these scientists spend most of their time in the lab in real life. They collect physical evidence (such as fingerprints, blood, and weapons) to gather DNA and ballistic information from the crime scene and analyze it in the lab. Forensic scientists also photograph, sketch, and reconstruct crime scenes. Forensic scientists might also be called to testify as expert witnesses to explain the evidence and the results of the analysis or test (such as pathology or toxicology findings) and provide relevance of this information to the case in question. 31

Do you enjoy math & science? Do you like problem solving? Do you like creating or figuring out how things work?

The opportunities in manufacturing & engineering are wide open and may be an excellent fit for you!

MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING WHAT IT TAKES • Strong math, science & communication skills • Focus & attention to detail • Problem-solving skills • Satisfaction with teamwork • Mastery of complicated machinery & processes

LOOK AROUND YOU!

Almost everything around you was created through the expertise of engineers, designers, and manufacturing employees. The manufacturing industry employs nearly 10 percent of the country and is a leader in technology and innovation. And it only continues to grow. Most manufacturing companies are willing to do on-the-job training and require no previous work experience. This is a great way to build your resume and develop technical abilities. You will also be able to learn many valuable and transferable skills, such as time management, teamwork, and problem-solving. Not only does the manufacturing industry provide many foot-in-the-door opportunities, but it also provides many different fields of interest. Manufacturing spans the spectrum from aerospace, food production, and textiles to pharmaceuticals. You can choose to work in an area you’re passionate about or one that makes you curious.

MECHATRONICS TECH

SUPPLY CHAIN PROFESSIONAL

Mechatronics technicians work with highly automated electronic, mechanical, computer, and robotic systems. Technicians in mechatronics, often called electro-mechanical technicians, reprogram and maintain equipment and troubleshoot problems. A mechatronics job combines electronics and mechanical obstacles to overcome daily. The job can be different each day, and technicians can work across many departments and industries.

Supply chain professionals oversee the import or creation of raw materials a company uses. They track the combined, shaped, and altered materials to form new products and monitor these items throughout the product development process to ensure adequate supplies are on hand. Supply chain professionals also develop a delivery system to provide maximum product creation and optimal shipments to customers or other manufacturers for further use. Supply chain professionals bring fresh ideas that allow the company to deliver its products to the market at higher quantities or a faster rate. These ideas might be as simple as reallocating employees within certain areas or bringing advanced technology to better track hundreds or thousands of materials and parts.

MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS When the camera stops rolling, the lights dim, and the director proudly yells, “that’s a wrap,” the video editor’s job is just getting started. Crafting hours of raw film and video footage into one concise, compelling product of a few minutes or even a few seconds can be a tremendous but exciting challenge. The exact sequence chosen by the video editor can often “make or break” a product. The editor is also tasked with cutting unnecessary images or sounds that may hinder the production of the video.

VIDEO EDITOR

They also insert special effects that keep the video engaging. The job sometimes can be tedious, but an outstanding video editor understands how important and rewarding attention to detail can be.
