or Homasote wall, could give an inimitably summery feel to the act of falling asleep. The rough-and-ready quality of these transitory dwellings was part of their charm: a slight air of privation added spice to the brief time spent away from normal life, and even made for a bond among those who shared the experience. That is one particular aspect of Cape and islands life that seems to be less in demand these days. Formerly unassuming structures are being renovated, or simply razed and replaced by accommodations considerably larger and more elaborate. In some towns, it’s difficult to travel more than a block or two without coming across two, three, or more construction sites. The homes you’ll see in this issue of New England Home Cape & Islands reflect this general trend. Even though not all of them are meant for full-time habitation, they all could certainly support it with ease. They may be places of escape—getaways in which to spend quality time with special friends and family—but they make no concessions when it comes to livability, incorporating all the amenities of home into what was once a more ad hoc, transitory setting. And, as you might expect, an increase in demand has meant the growth of the community of professionals and resources needed to support it. Custom builders, landscape firms, designers of houses and gardens abound; more and more boutiques and galleries supply furniture, fabrics, tile, lighting, candles, placemats, art, and all the other bits and pieces that go into making a pleasant living space. So leaf through these pages for a glimpse of the current state of high style as, moving into the future, we jointly write the next chapter in Cape and islands life. —Kyle Hoepner

here was once a time when Cape Cod and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket— though they had always been a permanent home to someone, be it the Nauset or Wampanoag tribes, English settlers, Quaker refugees, whalers, or Portuguese fishing families—were also a region of distinctly seasonal getaways. Guesthouses and vacation cottages could, even then, be rather grand, but frequently they weren’t. Lack of insulation, heat, and airconditioning were perhaps more the rule than the exception. Open plywood shelves, held up by plain steel brackets from the local hardware store, might grace the kitchen (if, indeed, there was any separate kitchen at all, rather than a simple galley wall off to one side of the main room). And the sound of outdoor insects and breezes heard from your pillow, separated from you only by the thickness of a bare plank

The Sky’s the Limit

A Provincetown artist paints his world as he sees it— from a unique perspective. ///////////

hen Paul Kelly travels abroad, he takes a sketchbook instead of a camera. Flip through the pad and you’ll find pages of pencil-smudged buildings, streets, and hillsides—scenes he likely jotted while stopped at a red light. “This is my tool,” he says. “This is how I see things. These are the townscapes.”

Kelly, an architect by training, lives in Provincetown, and images of that seaside enclave jumpstarted his career as a painter. That was in 2004, which makes him a relative newcomer to the scene, compared with many of the lifelong artists who call Provincetown their home and creative muse. Plenty of those artists are representational—meaning

their work depicts recognizable objects or subjects—as is his own work, Kelly says. But the latest incarnation of Kelly’s art, a series called “Above It,” reveals a

unique perspective. The scenes are still Provincetown, and they’re spatially accurate, but they’re constructed as if he were flying overhead, looking down on the roads, roofs, coastlines, and paved spaces below. How does he see the town from that angle? Mostly, it started as an accident, Kelly says. “One

time I was at my desk, and I thought, ‘I’m going to look at Google Earth and try to find Provincetown.’ I started finding these patterns of light and dark.” He began putting those patterns on canvas. “It’s still what I would consider representational,” he says. “Though I started to abstract it more.” The overall result? “It’s kind of an attitude about the town.” “Above It” is a long way from where Kelly started. He calls himself “semiretired” from his work as a principal at Boston- and Provincetown-based Manitou Architects, which he founded with Edward Dusek in 1979. The career followed naturally after earning an

a­ rchitecture degree from Rhode Island School of Design. But Kelly also has a fine-arts education from Syracuse University, and moving to Provincetown unleashed a different sort of creativity. “If you’re interested in a built environment, buildings, properties—and that’s what you’ve done your whole life—it seems like a natural progression to get involved with images you know,” he says. “And I know how to draw something that looks like a little town. The opportunity is here to absorb.” So Kelly absorbed. He explored the streets, views, buildings, docks, and beaches in Provincetown, looking for interesting angles and points of beauty to catch his interest. He would sketch a scene, then fill in the sketches with watercolor, and eventually transform the watercolor into oil on canvas. The more

he painted, the less concerned he became with getting the exact shade of the house right or including details like windows and doors in a building. Over time, he tweaked his style to focus more on shadows, light, and composition, which works well with his Google Earth explorations. “Now, I’ll go right to a canvas without previously drawing and put it down as it comes,” Kelly says. “That’s very different from the way I started, when it was very measured. Now, you can see the shape of a building, but it’s not the most important thing. The thoughts are all there, and you can put it together, but I don’t feel like I’m responsible for showing something as it really is.” Greatly influenced by the shapes and colors of abstract landscape painters Richard Diebenkorn and Nicolas de Staël, Kelly taught himself the techniques of the artists he admired as his painting evolved, and he regularly attends art classes,

Kelly’s work will be on display in an exhibit July 8 to July 22 at Alden Gallery in Provincetown’s fabled East End gallery district. Gallery owner Howard Karren says he doesn’t generally take on someone considered an emerging artist, as Kelly was when they met. “It’s very unusual to see someone who is relentlessly energetic in terms of changing their point of view,” Karren says. “Paul is always looking at new ways of doing things. I hadn’t seen anyone think of using Google Earth as a point of view for looking at the landscape. hink of a garden on Cape Cod and you’re likely to picture voluptuous masses of blue hydrangeas, mounds of bright pink beach roses, and stands of grasses waving in a salty breeze. But, just as not every house here is a white-trimmed, weathered-shingled cottage, neither is every landscape composed of the stereotypical (though undeniably lovely) arrangement our imaginations conjure. Landscape architect Kimberly Mercurio was called in to work with a couple whose Orleans house is in fact, as Mercurio says, “Cape Cod classic cottagey.” Her clients had something less typical in mind for their yard and gardens, however. Architect Peter McDonald had replaced a dilapidated old barn with a new pool house that has a simple, modern aesthetic, and the couple envisioned equally uncomplicated surroundings. An open floor plan and wide doors mean that even from the inside, the pool house feels very much a part of the outdoors. Mercurio’s plan encourages the connection between

indoors and out and echoes the pareddown interior by designer Jill Morelli. The house opens to a bluestone terrace with joints of creeping thyme. The terrace abuts a swath of grass that gives children plenty of room to run around, while from the seating area on the terrace or the arrangement of chaises at the pool, adults can keep a watchful eye. Simple furniture crafted

from wood salvaged from the old barn joins a trio of streamlined chairs with vivid orange cushions on the terrace. The wooden fence that encloses the bluestone-surrounded pool mimics the pool house’s simple architecture, and will all but disappear behind a privet hedge as the shrubbery fills in over the years. Other plantings were kept to a minimum, both for easy maintenance and for

understated appeal. The new landscape plan, by design, blends the Cape Cod aesthetic with a modern sensibility. “It’s very simple,” Mercurio says, “but there’s a lot going on there.”

NATURE’S WAY

A West Yarmouth property designed by Keith LeBlanc of LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects also has a deceptively simple appearance. In this case, however, that simplicity translates into a lush, almost wild-looking yard and gardens that seem to have sprung up naturally. The couple that lives in this house, which has been in the wife’s family for years, asked LeBlanc to rework the somewhat formal gardens to create a more relaxed feel. The two-story house, with its widow’s walk overlooking Nantucket Sound, has a traditional look. “The plan was about organizing the site to give a relaxed approach to the house while respecting its formality,” LeBlanc says. A long driveway takes visitors through groves of cedar trees and past areas of low-growing native groundcovers. A key part of the plan was creating parking for the many visitors the couple entertains throughout the summer. “We resisted, and they didn’t want, the huge gravel court that would be more typical,” ­LeBlanc says. Instead, slabs of granite laid in the grass at various points between the main house and the guesthouse serve for parking.

Rough slabs of granite form a walking trail to the main house through a thick carpet of ferns and groundcover. The only plantings that might be considered formal are the climbing roses and hydrangeas that flank the front door. Elsewhere, buddleia, catmint, and groundcovers set off terraces of irregularly shaped pieces of bluestone and granite. As unstructured and freeform as this property seems, make no mistake: it took a great deal of thought, planning, and hard work to get that natural look.

Landscape architect Dan Gordon undertook a very different challenge in designing the pool and tennis-court areas for a mid-Cape home. The house sits on a long, linear site in an established neighborhood where nearby houses are, says Gordon, “older properties with lots of rhododendrons. They have kind of an estate character, rather than beachy.” Gordon’s clients wanted to keep that character, and bring to their property what he calls a “country club feel.” At the start of the long entry drive, Gordon established the estate feel by planting American holly and rhododendrons among rich evergreens and a canopy of oak trees. one side along the drive, and includes a pretty sitting area grounded by bluestone and grass laid in a grid pattern. Around the house and guesthouse, Gordon used boxwoods, evergreens, and flowering trees and shrubs to lend a formal feel, while at the swimming pool the tone becomes more exuberant and relaxed. As the property stretches toward the water, summery perennials give way to a natural

landscape of rosa rugosa, summer sweet, and beach grasses. The pool keeps a low profile, letting the water views take center stage. The first directive: save the trees. The homeowners had spent weekends and summer vacations in their Falmouth home for a dozen years, and while they always planned to tear down the 1950s-style ranch and start fresh, they also knew the stately, centuryplus-old oaks—both black and white varieties—would have to stay. “People have told us they’re the most beautiful trees on the Cape,” says the wife. “It was important for us to preserve as many as possible.” She and her husband felt passionate about more than just the trees. When it came to the new house, she says, “we had a really clear vision of what we wanted.” The two recall sitting down with their interior designer, Dee Elms of Project Team

“I kept a file over twelve years,” says the wife. “Every time I saw something I liked in a magazine, I ripped it out with the hope of incorporating it.”

Boston-based Terrat Elms Interior Design, and choosing all the tile in a mere two hours. In terms of the big picture, the main living quarters had to be on the first floor, with enough space below to accommodate visiting grandchildren. Using space wisely was also imperative. “We always kept in mind function rather than size,” the homeowner explains. Falmouth-based architect John Dvorsack spent a lot of time walking the site before sitting down at the drawing board. His design solution translated into a traditional Shingle-style ranch with a full, walkout basement. The lines of the house are horizontal, rather than vertical, with peaks and dormers that lend interest to the roof. “It’s a low70  New England Home Cape & Islands  Summer 2016

profile house that’s going to settle into the neighborhood and fit in with the environment very nicely,” ­Dvorsack says. While the house blends so seamlessly with the surroundings that it feels as though it’s been there for years, designer Elms and her clients aimed for a more contemporary look and feel inside. Having previously worked with Elms on their Boston condo, the homeowners were confident she could navigate their needs and desires. Needs included furnishings that could withstand the wear and tear of eight visiting grandchildren who, as children will, occasionally track in sand from the beach. As for desires, the homeowners wanted a decidedly grown-up aesthetic. Elms set to work crafting an interior that’s as

beautiful as it is livable. In the open area that comprises the living room, dining room, and kitchen, where Dvorsack employed coffered ceilings to link the spaces together, she opted for a neutral foundation, and then incorporated color, texture, and patterns in a thoughtful way. A fireplace framed in honed gray sandstone and flanked by symmetrical built-in cabinets and shelves takes center stage in the living room. A vivid abstract painting by Stanley Whitney above the mantel and a sprinkling of toss pillows on the sofa add color, while the broadloom rug introduces pattern. Many furnishings are new, but the couple couldn’t part with their 120-year-old farm table, the centerpiece of the dining room. Elms paired it with Summer 2016  New England Home Cape & Islands 71

wishbone chairs and a three-drum chandelier with a modern steel accent. As frequent entertainers, the homeowners wanted the table aligned with the French doors that lead to the screened porch so that they could pick it up— literally—and take the party outside. Simply shift aside the teak table and rattan furniture, with its chic gray-striped cushions, and there’s enough space for the table. Entertaining goes hand in hand with cooking, so it was important to have a kitchen up to the task. Aesthetically speaking, the user-friendly space is defined by the clean lines and neutral tones of white cabinetry and a backsplash of glass tile in a soft gray hue. The star is a stunning walnut peninsula, with a waterfall edge, that seats four. The side facing the

range drops down six inches, providing ample counter and prep space. Guests occasionally retreat downstairs for dessert, where a well-stocked wine cellar beckons. Thoughtful design, including the temperature-controlled fridge, keeps the guests warm and the wine chilled. Leather chairs, a stone floor, textured wallcovering, and industrial-chic lighting conspire to give the space its luxurious club-like feel. It’s not just the over-twenty-one set that is well taken care of on the 1,500-square-foot lower level. In addition to a gym, family room, and billiard room, the homeowners carved out a special nook for their grandchildren. Dvorsack designed a custom bunkroom with eight built-in berths, each complete with a shelf for books, an individual light, and two USB

ports. To ratchet up the fun factor, Elms dressed the room in bright purple-blue and orange. A matching bath sports cheerful herringbone-pattern floor tile in orange, yellow, and shades of turquoise. Proving it’s all in the details, the toe-kick of the sink vanity pulls out, so little ones have a step to make handwashing and teeth-brushing easier. Built-ins are sprinkled liberally throughout the home. From the kids’ bunks to the living room, the study to the guesthouse, the architect and designer found ways to maximize space and functionality. Builder Michael Lahart, of Pinsonneault Builders, lent his expertise to the design as well as the fabrication of all those useful touches. “Mick took advantage of every square inch of the house,” says the wife. “He’d suggest bookcases wherever there were empty spaces.” Summer 2016  New England Home Cape & Islands 73

Space was at a premium in the 316-square-foot guesthouse, but the pros made good use of the sweet space with a built-in bed, headboard, and bookshelf unit. Visitors have all the amenities they need—a cozy sitting area, a built-in coffee bar, and a Cape Cod must: an outdoor shower. The homeowners had a vision for their yard, too, and landscape designer Mary LeBlanc devised a plan with four-season appeal. Preserving the old oaks was paramount, of course, and LeBlanc created a lush woodland setting that builds nicely upon them, incorporating areas for gathering, gardens that please the eye, and a circular drive to welcome family

and friends. “It made my job easy to have this terrific infrastructure to work with,” she says of the trees. There’s an old saying about best-laid plans, but in this case, the years the owners put into thinking about their home was time well spent. “I kept a file over those twelve years,” says the wife. “Every time I saw something I liked in a magazine, I ripped it out with the hope of incorporating it.” Indoors and out, their design team granted all the couple’s fondest wishes. hat deep-blue ring of water that surrounds an island offers a sense of separateness from the world. Away from mainland troubles, anxiety dissipates, leaving the giddy feeling of freedom. That’s one reason so many people who visit Martha’s Vineyard never leave, or at least end up staking a claim they can return to as needed. For Christopher Celeste and Nancy Kramer, two high-achieving creatives based in Ohio, the island rep-

resented something more substantial. It was the place where their two families could come together as one. As single parents, each with three children, Celeste and Kramer vacationed on the island together for a few years, eventually marrying at a house they rented in 2007. Back in Ohio, they continued to live apart for another five years as they ran their businesses and their kids completed schools. “While we lived in two different cities 150 miles

apart back in Ohio, the island became the place where we blended our two families together,” says Celeste. “We realized we wanted to build a family home that would be here for generations and be part of the community.” They started with someone they knew, Maggie White of Hob Knob Realty, who had found them the houses they rented. White, who is also a developer and the founder of Hob Knob Construction, introduced them to her chain of contacts and decades-long friends—all island based—who helped the couple create a home to suit a family of eight. One of the properties White showed them, a lot of almost an acre in the middle of Edgartown, proved the perfect place to begin. Wanting to pay architectural homage to the historic nature of the village, the couple turned to local architect Patrick Ahearn. “Patrick really acted as a steward and a guide,” says Celeste. “We showed him a photo of a farmhouse we

liked and right there he sketched it on a napkin, adding porticos, and that was it.” Taking full advantage of the size of the lot, Ahearn placed the house toward the center, far from the activity of the street. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to see the Greek Revival–style house unless you’re looking for it. A carriage house blocks the view to the main house, ensuring a high level of privacy. “The carriage house becomes the foil for the street and creates a romantic passageway that lines up with the front door,” says Ahearn, of the disguise. “It acts like a portal to the hidden jewel beyond.” Summer 2016  New England Home Cape & Islands 85

Nestled among mature trees, the main house, pool cabana/guest house, garage, and carriage house all relate to one another through a series of gardens designed and installed by island landscaping company Donaroma’s. “It’s all about the scale,” says Ahearn. “In Edgartown, the spaces between buildings become as important as the buildings themselves. They create hidden gardens and passages throughout the village. That’s exactly what happens on this property on a smaller scale.” While the formality of the village is reflected in the crisp white clapboards and graying shingles of the exterior, Celeste and Kramer knew they wanted an

interior with a more relaxed feel. “It’s not a cocktail party house; it’s a blended-family house where friends can come in and relax,” says Celeste. “We’ve got six kids. informality. A wide entryway offers a view through the living room, into the dining room, and to the backyard beyond. Stairs to the bedrooms are tucked unobtrusively to one side, while a short hallway leads to the kitchen with its vaulted ceiling and a breakfast area. In the opposite wing lie a mudroom, office, and a small sitting room where Kramer and Celeste like to read the papers and take their morning coffee. “We tweaked the interior layout of the house, but didn’t deviate too much from the floor plan,” says White. “At the time it was like the Brady Bunch,

because it was their first house together. They looked at that house as their family home. It was exciting to see a family merge like that.” The large, sprawling living room, with its mix of sofas, chairs, love seats, and loungers, offers a seat for everyone in the house. At its center is an almost literal piece of the island—an asymmetrical fireplace by stone artist Lew French. “It’s a conversational piece, a focal point,” says Celeste. French installed the piece, a mix of fieldstone and massive granite plinths, long before the furniture was placed. “Sometimes I

would come in and he would just be sitting there staring at it, figuring out where the next piece would go,” Celeste recalls. Kramer and Celeste both had ideas for islandbased designer John Murphy. Kramer wanted the floors to remain natural, and she wanted to work with Connecticut-based Elizabeth Eakins to create rugs for the living room and the master bedroom. The couple’s other guidelines for Murphy included no blue and white, no boats, nothing nautical, and no overdecorating. “It’s not a yacht club,” Celeste jokes.

The bed was one of the last things the couple found while working on the decoration of the house. A multicolored woven blanket and pillows by John Robshaw are finishing touches. “They had a vision for the house,” says Murphy. “We hunted and gathered in Columbus, Ohio, and used things from Nancy’s mother’s house. We met at Brimfield, where we found the stand for the sink in the Summer 2016  New England Home Cape & Islands 89

powder room and the metal chairs and cocktail tables in the living room. Christopher really got into it.” While the look is a mix of traditional (a nod to Kramer’s tastes), slightly bohemian (reflecting Celeste’s love of pattern and having lived in India), and modern (in layout and pared-down woodwork), ultimately it’s an island retreat. “More than anything,

this is a Martha’s Vineyard house,” says Celeste, noting that all of the art on the walls is by Martha’s Vineyard artists, from local galleries. “The process introduced us to a community of wonderful creatives,” he adds. The couple has gone on to collaborate with some of those same talents again, in their work on four other houses as part of their company Facing West, which provides funding for community development projects worldwide. The pastoral site surrounded by lush, bird-filled conservation land is lovely. Not far from the ocean but removed from the happy hubbub, it’s the quintessential Nantucket paradise. The new owners’ strategy for settling in was commencing nicely, too: they’d added a pool, a fully equipped twobedroom pool house, and generous outdoor areas for lounging and dining. Their next step was the renovation of the main

house. But, alas, that’s where plans hit a snag. After much deliberation, the owners came to the conclusion that, without a great deal of time and expense, the existing building could never be the comfortable, efficient summer home they’d envisioned. In order not to miss one heady season on their beloved island, they concluded the only solution was to take it down and rebuild on the original footprint. Still incredulous, the wife recounts how demolition began right after Labor Day, and by Memorial Day they’d moved back in. “It was amazing. The team worked so well together,” she says. According to architect Mark Cutone, builder Joe Gamberoni, and interior designer Jennifer Palumbo, however, the secret to their seamless collaboration was the vision of the owners. “All the decisions were made early,” explains Cutone, which eliminated lengthy deliberations along the way. Today’s vernacular-appropriate exterior mimics the look of the old house, weathering shingles and all. The versatile interior, though, is an open plan focusing on the views. The family room and kitchen spill into the living room with an ingeniously angled dining area as the link. It’s a layout that complements the owners’ family-and-friends-are-always-welcome lifestyle. There are four children of high school and college age, so guests are an almost everyday occurrence. But devised to weather traffic and resist clutter, the light-filled house accommodates even large numbers without missing a beat. And with dual bunk rooms in the basement level and an apartment over the garage, it will be the same if—as the wife muses—someday there are grandchildren. Yet, just as the owners had hoped, it’s also a house that feels right when the guests leave and it’s just the family.

The custom dining table has a top in a “specific watery-blue color,” says Palumbo. “It feels and looks like sea glass.” To streamline, Cutone minimized trim work, incorporated numerous built-ins (including all the beds), and skillfully defined activity zones with modern elements. Visitors entering the front hall spy an artful curved wall to their right, a sleek fireplace to their left, and beyond the French doors ahead, the green landscape. The sinuous wall helps define the living room, while the modern, bioethanol-burning hearth (no venting required) lends warmth, literally and emotionally. Clad in shiplapped white oak, the stunning fireplace seems to rise from the pale oak floor like a tree. Palumbo—who also designed the family’s winter home and has come to be a dear friend— beautifully underscores the clean architecture while simultaneously conjuring the relaxing spirit the owners anticipated. Her clients’ request for low maintenance translates into a host of stylish, durable fabrics. “We wanted ones that were easily cleanable but, when possible, with a textural quality for interest,” says the designer. Guests sliding onto the dining area’s banquette can’t help but notice that the handsome faux-leather seat is pleated. And those white Ligne Roset dining chairs may appear worrisome, but they’re also dressed in resilient faux leather. Summer 2016  New England Home Cape & Islands 101

With help from Nantucket Heritage Landscapes, the wife has ushered in a sumptuous array of island-suitable plants and flowers. Of course, the custom dining table, crafted by Altec Plastics with a resin top from 3form, is a centerpiece no one misses. Color is judiciously employed in this house, which makes the table with its dreamy top a standout. “The wife is fond of a specific watery-blue color,” Palumbo explains. “The top feels and looks like sea glass. And it doesn’t scratch.” In the kitchen, back-painted blue glass guards the cooktop, and the countertops are a bluish quartzite. “Quartzite has all the movement of marble but the strength of granite,” says Palumbo. To better mesh the galley with the other spaces, Cutone outfitted the area with drawers instead of cabinets. An ample pantry (with a blue-painted barn door) handles most of the storage. The blue thread Palumbo masterfully weaves throughout is a subtle reminder of the nearby water. But there are other coastal prompts as well. In the living room, the flat-weave rug, upholstery, and bi-level coffee table are all varying shades of sand. A wood and resin end table suggests driftwood, and the console sports a gray shagreen-wrapped top. Because continuity soothes the eye, the theme is

The parents’ sanctuary is almost luminous in its neutrality, but Palumbo revs it up visually with an endearing ottoman sporting a shaggy dog–like cotton coat, a hide and silvermetallic rug, and linen drapes with a slight pucker that, according to Palumbo, “breathe texture.” The soft, airy ambience drifts right into the bath aided by a vanity Cutone designed to float above the oak floor. The boys’ rooms have been given a touch more masculinity, still with plenty of blue. A navy coverlet strikes a nautical note in the oldest son’s lair, where the bed is framed with shiplapped white oak. A gray stain between the boards—just as on the shiplapped hearth—lends depth. The two younger boys’ beds rest foot to foot with a privacy wall in between. As Gamberoni sees it, this carefully crafted wall that

doesn’t meet the ceiling is a fun feature. “I had a lot of brothers and I’m also a father. I like to imagine the boys climbing over it,” he says with delight. “The whole time we were working here, we were conscious that the owners were really intent on sharing this place. It made it a special project.” Indeed, stop by any afternoon and chances are there will be kids throwing a Frisbee on the lawn, swimmers in the pool, and something sizzling on the grill. With help from Nantucket Heritage Landscapes, the wife has ushered in a sumptuous array of islandsuitable plants and flowers. embroidery and velvet inside. It includes both “To” and “From” initials; it was definitely a love token. But it also has a mystery because it doesn’t look like it has ever been used. You could create a whole romance, an entire novel centered on it, perhaps an unfinished love story. It is a jewelry box without a trace of jewelry in it. Like a lot of Tramp art, it exudes love and passion.

How do you find Tramp art to sell in your gallery?

In the 1970s and ’80s I could find it in dusty corners of antique shops and even in people’s attics. Today more people are aware of its value; even collectors and museums are competing for the best items. It has become so popular that you can simply go online and find great examples of it for sale. It’s also for sale at antique shows, which I prefer. I have to hold a piece, feel it, and look at it. That’s the thing about Tramp art, when you hold it you feel its soul and its spirit.

In addition to selling your own paintings, you’ve become a collector and seller of what’s known as Tramp art. How did you get interested?

In the 1960s and 1970s, I started picking things up that people were throwing out but that I thought were interesting. The first time I saw Tramp art I felt it had so much presence, so much soul, that it resonated with me. I realized I was looking at something I had never seen before. I had to have it. Tramp art is a branch of folk art, a woodworking style that uses small pieces of wood,

often whittled into geometric shapes. It can be anything from a box made out of matchsticks to a picture frame built up from a cigar box to larger furniture. Most pieces were made between the 1870s and the 1940s.

What is it about Tramp art that appeals to you?

The pieces have so much spirit. Each one displays the hand and the heart of the maker. For example, I own a really classic piece of Tramp art that I love so much I could never sell it. It is a big jewelry box, built up and personalized and with

Unlike a lot of folk art that has been collected for generations, Tramp art has really only been collected for the last half century or so. That was by a sophisticated group of people who were willing to accept this strange thing. But now is a very exciting time for Tramp art. There have been books written about it and it has finally been recognized as folk art. It has its own place in history now. On the antique market it is holding its own, regarding price. It is a great area to start collecting; because it is so unique and one of a kind.

Who is buying it?

The complaint you often hear in the antique business is, “Young people aren’t interested in antiques.” But I am selling Tramp art to young people who seem so busy, so consumed by technology, but when they see a piece of this folk art they slow down and say, “Wow! I have to have it!” Technology cannot produce these pieces; there is no iPhone app for whittling! When I sell a piece I feel great joy; there are now people who love it and have a passion for it, and I know have a special place in their lives for it.

Design ideas in the making

I initially went to the Rochester Institute of Technology intending to study graphic design and fine arts. I’m a bit of a motorhead, though—I definitely like building things in 3D more than in 2D—and I soon noticed that industrial design seemed to include more of that engineering component. So I switched, and completed my degree in industrial design instead. The idea for this outdoor sectional furniture grew from a Philippe Starck exhibit I saw at the Museum of Modern Art, which included a plastic furniture line of his in bright, solid colors. I thought they would be cool to have in my shop, but I was building a Jeep there at the time, and I knew they’d get dirty, or melted, or burned, or something else bad would happen to them. So I made a few sketches, taped up some cardboard models, and started welding together sheets of a kind of steel called “expanded metal” to create similarly sculptural forms of my own. Shortly after that, a client who had dropped by to discuss a project saw them and asked me to make a set for her, and more commissions have followed. Most of the pieces I’ve made so far, including sofas and club chairs of a similar design, have been finished in automotive paint, but I’m thinking of doing some in clear coat, to let the metal and rust show through.
