pring in New England will test your patience. We suffer (or embrace, depending on your mindset) a series of false starts, and then one day, the world is greener than you ever imagined possible, and the air buzzes with birdsong and life. So, what to do as we wait it out? This is what works for me: I’m a spring baby, and I happily celebrate my entire birth month rather than just the one day, when there could well be a snowstorm. I also plan my garden and enthusiastically start seeds indoors. You’d think I’d make note of past successes, of which there are few, to properly focus my energy but, alas, no. I cheer every sprout—and mourn those that inevitably die from over-watering—in what has become my waiting-for-spring-during-spring ritual. This year, the waiting is a bit more fraught, and the promise of spring brings far more than flowers. I suggest we all embrace new rituals—and go grand. Make this the year you break ground on the lush landscape of your dreams (don’t forget a veggie garden!) or plan the guest house that doubles as a home away from home…just steps from home. We’ve all become practiced at outdoor soirées, haven’t we? Prepare the patio or poolside for your first post-lockdown guests with a statement piece or jolt of joyful color. Whatever it is, immerse yourself in the planning, and before you know it, spring will really be here.

SUN BELT Practicality can sometimes yield artistry, and a guest house designed by Sherman Building Design partners Michael Carpanzano and Lauren Neill on their Sherman property ticks a lot of usability boxes: pandemic-friendly quarters for visiting family, pool house, lake house, a couple’s date-night hideout,

stairs inset into a living area wall provide access to a loft bedroom. Copious use of native stone for pathways and hardscaping allows the space to blend seamlessly with the exposed bedrock upon which the building resides. While the design in the main living space nods to the rustic setting with furnishings such as a fur-covered bench, Lucite and glass materials also play well with the ample natural light.

The Scandinavian-inspired, offset A-frame guest house’s light wood exterior and clean lines make it seem ordinary from the side. SPECIAL SPACES The design team chose western red cedar for the interior and exterior walls due to its durability, economy, and availability during the pandemic, as well as its beautiful appearance. The vintage chairs were an auction find.

the guest house, an adjacent in-ground pool, and the main residence. Raised parapets make the solar panels appear flush to the roofline rather than an awkward appendage. Bathed in natural light, Neill’s interior design emphasizes the casual, rustic setting with copious use of light wood and repur-

posed furniture. A project that began as a multifunctional alternative to siting solar panels in a field has played a critical role in the family’s pandemic-survival strategy. “It’s important to stay connected to people, and now we have a place that everyone can safely enjoy,” says Carpanzano.

BARN BREAK Detached barns are nothing unusual in the former farming community of New Canaan, but it’s safe to say that few include their own built-in spa and in-home gym. Father-and-son architectural team James and Jim Schettino had previously expanded on the homeowners’ principal residence, which lacked for additional elbow room. They returned to conceive a detached structure based on a traditional barn design but with modern sensibilities like gunmetal-framed fifteen-foot-by-eight-foot floor-to-ceiling windows and doors. Roll-up doors in the back provide fresh air to the fitness room and also allow the barn to be converted into a garage—if desired—in the future.

bedrooms with pocket doors accommodate overnight guests while taking maximum advantage of the structure’s limited allowable footprint. BELOW: A comfortable living room and kitchen with an eat-in counter island are separated from the fitness area by sliding barn doors. In warm weather, the barn doors, glass sliders, and a roll-up garage door can all be opened to provide air circulation from the front of the space to the back.

Glass barn doors separate the living area and gym. The gabled aluminum roof is interrupted only by a small dormer, permitting stairway access to the two second-floor guest bedrooms. Nearly every inch of the town-permitted 1,000 square feet of interior space was put to work, with the living area extended to a bluestone patio that features an inviting spa.

With the owners’ college-age children back at home due to the pandemic, the extra space was particularly welcome for family dinners, movie nights, socially distanced cocktails, and other activities. “We have four kids, and with them all at home, the barn saved us,” says owner Jen Richardson.

fire feature, however, the existing pool needed to be replaced; its paving endangered the roots of a stunning, roughly 150-year-old cucumber magnolia, a rare survivor of 2012’s Hurricane Sandy. Because it sat in a flood zone, though, the new pool would have to be sited within the footprint of the original one. Working closely with the architect, engineer, and pool contractor, Werner and his design team devised an elegant solution that maintained the natural grade, could withstand a flood event, and, importantly, created a permeable surface surrounding the magnolia. As a bonus, the terraced pool coping now doubles as a

pretty seat wall. To add layers of visual interest out front, the Kathryn Herman team redesigned the driveway as a curvilinear path that lends “a meandering, experiential quality” to the linear plot, says Werner. Transplanting existing arborvitaes and rhododendrons along neighboring properties added screening, while new dogwoods and a deciduous beech hedge surrounding the parking area complement existing plantings. And while some trees were carefully removed, certain mature varieties, including white oaks, Norway maples, dogwoods, and a magnificent columnar beech specimen tree, were kept in place. “This added nice age to the property, so it doesn’t feel like it’s all brand new,” explains Werner. “It’s rare to come onto a property and have two awesome specimen trees, so we were really lucky.” EDITOR'S NOTE: For details, see Resources. unil Howlader can’t recall life before his compulsion to create art. He was barely past kindergarten age when he became fascinated with two photographs in one of his schoolbooks. The subjects of the photos, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, didn’t mean much to the little boy, but the idea of setting down a lifelike image on paper spoke to him, and he did his best to copy what he saw.

This was the early 1970s, shortly after Bangladesh had won independence from Pakistan, and resources were scarce,

Howlader, some things haven’t changed. Vibrant color is still at the center of his art, and his bold, expressive, semiabstract work is rich with a sense of place, whether in reference to his native land or his adoptive country. Some pieces, like his Festival series, recall his childhood and the Bengali New

especially in Howlader’s rural village. If he wanted to make art, he would have to be resourceful. Pencils for drawing were available, but where was he to find the paints he needed? He saw how his mother’s fingers turned yellow when she cooked with turmeric. With her permission, he mixed the spice with water to make a paste. He had also seen girls in his village using altha, a red dye, to color their feet and hands for special occasions. “I took it from my sister—

I didn’t tell her,” he confesses. Green beans, when mashed, provided a green liquid suitable for painting, he discovered. “So for me, the primary colors were yellow, red, and green,” he says. It was a long journey from the copying of textbook pictures to the Master of Fine Arts from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, to International Artist in Residence at the Griffis Art Center in New London, to his current life as a resident of Mystic and a critically acclaimed artist, but for

Others, such as his paintings of kayakers under the Mystic River Bascule Bridge, are a direct reflection of his life here. “I paint what I see,” Howlader says. But more than that, he adds, “I paint the essence of what I see.” Just as that little boy sought to do decades ago when he set about mixing his own paints. Want to shop global artisans without venturing beyond New England? Make an appointment to explore Michael Trapp’s barn in Sharon. BY TOVAH MARTIN Meanwhile, Trapp’s annual winter escapades crisscrossing Northern Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other far-flung destinations were originally slated as time out from working seven days a week. “But every place I go, there’s always a shopping opportunity,” he pleads his own defense. As a result, when Trapp “goes fishing,” warehouses fill to overflowing. That was Trapp’s dilemma ten years ago when he found a massive Dutch barn for sale in nearby Sharon. Not only was the cavernous former dairy barn begging to be stocked, it also boasted an adjacent thirty-by-100-foot concrete slab perfect for serving as a stone yard. Trapp made an offer, acquired the barn, and showered the oversized labyrinth of spaces with the love an old structure deserves.

ara Vincenta loves working on the edge. ¶ For the landscape architect, a childhood spent sailing on Long Island Sound has evolved into a knack for curating the balance between land and water. “I love marine environments—so designing them and designing for their sustainability is a passion of mine,” she says. She also relishes the puzzle of piecing together ecological features, clients’ needs, and coastal regulations in a seamless landscape. “When someone looks at the end result,” Vincenta says, “they have no idea of the baby steps it took to get there.” The property on Westport’s Mill Creek was the perfect puzzle. Snug against the winding waterway, its failings included a decrepit driveway, a slope that hindered access to a tennis court alongside the house, predictable plantings, and erosion along the

Having remodeled the contemporary-styled house, the homeowners sought to remedy those problems as well as enhance the view from their new windows. “They wanted a landscape that was beautiful to look at from inside, with that spectacular view of the creek and landscape below,” Vincenta says. “And they also wanted to be able to engage with the landscape.”

Vincenta could see why. “When I walked onto the site, I was truly captivated by the marshlands,” she recalls. “It became the inspiration for the design of the property.” She began by extending the house into the landscape, using Corten steel walls to tame the slope between the house and the tennis court. A resin-reinforced gravel path now cuts across the slope with

steps leading safely downward among lush beds of hydrangea, echinacea, and fountain grass. Alongside the front entrance, a new, industrial-styled water feature greets arrivals with the soothing music of trickling water. In back, a crumbling stone wall and unsightly chain-link fence between an existing pool and the shoreline was

At the yard’s edge, a gravel walkway invites a stroll along the sinuous curves of the creek. To define the path and reduce the rate of runoff from the lawn, Vincenta used gabion walls—stone-filled steel cages originally engineered to stabilize slopes—that are illuminated at night. Though not necessarily native to New England, their basket-like forms

stone structure of gabion walls seems right at home in the coastal New England environment; mounds of hyssop and twilight aster add color along their curves. Between the path and the creek, a mix of salt-tolerant native plants provide interest, while taller grasses, strategically placed, form a privacy screen between the creek and pool. The introduction of native plants draws butterflies, dragonflies, and a variety of birds, like this goldfinch, to the yard.

call to mind old-time lobster traps, weighted down with stones harvested from one of the region’s rocky beaches. “They’re a great reflection not only of a place, but the steel detailing speaks to the architecture [of the house],” says Vincenta. “From above, they become a sculptural element that’s reflective of the marshlands.” The walls’ unique construction is also a reminder that the solution

s any designer will attest, making a client feel at home is the ultimate goal of any project. In the case of designer Cindy Kramer, her client—a Connecticut native who had recently moved back to the state after living in Florida for two decades—was unhappy with the new Stonington residence she shared with her teenage daughter. “The existing interiors were very traditional, with dark colors and deep wood tones,” says Kramer. “It was lacking the energetic spirit of the homeowner, who wanted a house that matched her personality.” What began as a light refresh of the dining

Kramer carried the dining room’s natural woven elements into a newly constructed breakfast porch off the kitchen. A porcelain tile floor adds to the indoor-outdoor aesthetic the designer had in mind, while a custom table and chandelier, both from Dunes and Duchess, and a built-in banquette make for the perfect casual dining spot.

Grasscloth, wicker, jute, and linens round out what Kramer calls a “New EnglandFloridian vibe.” room quickly escalated to a multi-space renovation and addition that focused on the colonial’s main entertaining areas. At the top of the client’s wish list was a new dining room. “The house was built in 2006 and simply lacked character,” recalls the Stonington-based designer. To remedy this, Kramer worked with local firm Jeremy Hill Builders to add architectural interest in the form of ceiling and window moldings and wainscotting. As a jumping-off point for a “more friendly and comfortable” dining room, the designer selected a cheery floral Schumacher print to adorn a pair of antique wing chairs holding court at either end of the table. On the opposite side of the room is a cozy sitting area, which can be used for everything from greeting guests (the room is located off the entry), to gathering for after-dinner drinks, to curling up with a book. “This client isn’t afraid of color and pattern, so I gave her a pretty palette that feels light and bright in this sun-filled room,” says Kramer. Grasscloth, wicker, jute, and linens round out the “New

England−Floridian vibe,” as Kramer calls it. “It’s a bit coastal, which is not only a nod to Florida, where the client lived for so long, but to the water in and around Stonington.” Next up, Kramer worked with the client to reimagine the dated kitchen, designing custom cabinetry with a glass-front built-in that “recalls a piece of furniture,” says the designer. The new white cabinetry complements classic subway tiles, durable quartz countertops that resemble marble, and antique brass fixtures. And off the kitchen is a newly constructed breakfast porch, where the homeowner enjoys casual meals. “I wanted this room to relate to the dining room, with its springy

colors and natural textures,” says Kramer of the porch. An abundance of windows makes for an indoor-outdoor experience. Here, the grasscloth from the dining room ceiling appears on the walls, and white coastal-inspired paneling adorns the ceiling. A large pedestal table, built-in banquette, and extra chairs allow for various seating options. Indeed, the refreshed spaces are both functional and beautiful. “I just love how springy and summery this home feels now,” says Kramer. “Even in the dead of a New England winter, it’s bright, happy, and inviting.” EDITOR’S NOTE: For details, see Resources.

ack in the early 2000s, their new house was just what the couple wanted. The two-story dwelling combined gabled and hipped rooflines and sported a columned front portico, a generous porch, and the asymmetrical

combination of arched and rectangular windows that had a moment of popularity as the century was turning. And its location, a pretty and spacious lot in a Fairfield neighborhood, made for a fine place to raise a family. Time passed, as it does, and the children grew into adulthood and moved on to lives of their own. The husband and wife took a hard look at their home and realized it could use an update.

While some couples might have chosen to downsize, this pair liked the idea of keeping the house that held so many happy memories. “We wanted it to feel fresher and more modern,” the wife says. A new look, chic and elegant but casual and comfortable, was really all the house needed to suit the next phase of the couple’s life, which the wife confesses she hopes includes entertaining grandchildren in the not too distant future.

Of course, when it comes to home renovations, nothing is ever as simple as it sounds. The overhaul turned into a ten-month project that involved gutting the inside almost entirely. “We replaced every surface, every door, every piece of trim,” says architect Michael Smith. The essential structure and footprint are the same, but the changes wrought by Smith, along with interior designer Christine McGovern and landscape architect Neil Brunetti, are so profound, it almost seems like magic. Outside, Smith introduced simplicity

and symmetry for a timeless farmhouse look. He swapped out fussy windows with simple two-over-twos flanked by shutters. An Alaskan cedar roof will weather to a pleasing gray to complement the new white siding. The only additions are the cupolatopped detached garage and a sitting room that takes advantage of the sunny rear of the house. The front door opens to a double-height foyer that might be called grand if not for a certain playfulness. A dazzling Shakúff chandelier of glass cylinders hangs from a brass herringbone-patterned plate

that echoes the wood floor below. Smith outfitted the high walls with square panels inset with horizontal shiplap. The foyer holds the first glimpse of the blue hue that carries through the design. “The starting point for the palette came from the kitchen’s Lacanche French-blue range,” McGovern explains. Here in the

foyer, it manifests in the staircase; McGovern called on decorative painter Deidre Mannix, who cerused the columns of the railing with black stain then rubbed Benjamin Moore Bachelor Blue into the grain of the wood. The same blue makes an appearance again in the dining room, this time in the

stunning high-gloss finish on the ceiling, a design triumph with its X-spoke coffers and shiplap. “I’m always thinking about ceilings,” Smith says. “They tend to get overlooked, but there are so many design possibilities.” In fact, every room has a unique ceiling treatment, from the relatively simple cedar of the sunroom to

The interior design plan, which both the homeowner and McGovern say was a close collaboration, emphasizes texture—a crushed velvet sofa in the living room (in that same luscious French blue), Phillip Jeffries silk and abaca wallcovering in the main bedroom, the rustic live edge of the dining room table—with furniture

and fixtures in a mix of classic and contemporary style. The design team and their clients agree the end result is a true transformation. “It really looks like a different house,” the homeowner reports. Actress, author, and MTV veejay (1991–1996) Karen Duffy Lambros— better known as Duff to MTV fans— and interior designer Gregory Shano have been friends since he was eleven, she was fourteen, and they were both growing up in New Jersey. “I have probably had more fun and laughs with Greg than just about anyone else on Earth,” says Lambros. Three years ago, when the timing felt right to refresh the Litchfield County country home Lambros and her husband, John, inherited from John’s father when he passed away in 2001, she immediately reached out to Shano, who had designed the couple’s colorful Manhattan apartment a few years earlier. The home, built in 1790 and part of the Lambros family since the 1980s, sits on 200 acres and boasts a working farm with six Belted Galloway cows (“bovine lawn ornaments,” laughs Lambros) and two rescued donkeys. Shano, who has a background in fashion and a passion

for quirky farmhouses, says he didn’t want to erase the home’s past—not even the creaky stairs and floorboards. Instead, he embraced the existing collection of antiques and oddly shaped rooms with fabric and wallpaper that honor the history of the house. The first room to receive an update belongs to the couple’s seventeen-year-old son, Jack. With the goal of making each room in the rambling layout serve at least two purposes, Shano turned Jack’s room into a young gentleman’s retreat that could also be used as a guest room in a pinch. It’s hard to imagine a scenario when Jack would need to give up his space in a house that boasts seven guest rooms, but when your circle of friends includes director Wes Anderson, who showed up in 2009 to record voices with the cast and crew of Fantastic

Mr. Fox, needing extra beds isn’t unusual. (Coincidentally, Anderson slept in Jack’s room.) Inspired by cozy New England inns, Shano sought to turn each guest room into its own story. He made a point of spending the night in each one in order to fully understand the personality of the space. There’s Lambros’s favorite, dubbed the Jungle Room, where Shano used Schumacher’s Les Fougeres fabric on the bed, walls, chair, and Roman shades for a cocoon affect. Lambros admits that’s where she FaceTimes friends

these days. (Before it was deemed the Jungle Room, it served as George Clooney’s bedroom when Clooney voiced Mr. Fox in the aforementioned film.) In a closet-sized room that Lambros anticipated would only ever be used for naps, Shano pulled elements of color from Sanderson Design Group’s equestrian-themed Tally Ho wallpaper. He painted the cornice and casings highgloss black to mimic the riders’ top hats, while the red twin bed echoes their blazers. “For me, there can never be enough pattern in a room,” says Shano. In spite of its size, visiting friends frequently request it. But the room that just might be the showstopper—for now anyway: the home’s

redesign is still in progress—sits on the top floor. The house’s dormers resulted in sharp angles that Shano sought to blur using a busy Brunschwig & Fils red toile pattern. The same pattern appears on the shades that adorn the room’s tiny window, and it also covers an RH chair. A candy-apple-red wool carpet from ABC Carpet & Home ties it all together. “If you’re going to hire someone to do a big job, it’s important to go for it,” says Lambros. “I didn’t want restrained. I wanted fearless.”
