Our Shared Future By Kent Ingram, Senior Pastor
I feel it is important to try to keep you informed as we move through a time of uncertainty in our denomination. We are getting ready for another General Conference in May of 2020. My hope and prayer is that by then, or preferably before then, a clearer path to our future will emerge. I remind you that I was elected again, to be a delegate to general Conference. We only elect two clergy as delegates, with a number of reserves. I was the second elected clergy, which means that I won’t have as many responsibilities as I did last time when I was first elected head of the delegation. We elected good people all across the delegation, lay and clergy, and it will be fun to work with them. I appreciate your support of me as I give time and energy to the larger church. There are, of course, a number of regular petitions that will come to the General Conference, but I am paying close attention to the proposals that will allow this denomination to divide into more like-minded groups and avoid the bitter and rancorous conflict of the last 50 years. Frankly, the trust levels are low, and the stakes are high, so negotiations seem to be moving at a cautious pace. There have been several recommendations brought so far. One by two bishops, Bishop Jones and Bishop Bard. It proposes that we create two structures within the church, one for centrist/progressives and one for traditionalists. Another proposal that just came out called, the Indianapolis proposal, goes a little further by
creating two different denominations, each with their own structure. I know that there are several others in the works. (You can Google it and find information on the Bard/Jones plan and the Indianapolis plan). What they have in common is the creation of a large Methodist denomination comprised of about two thirds to three fourths of the current United Methodists in America, along with some of the conferences across the globe, into a fully inclusive, broad, generous church in the Wesleyan tradition. Much of the structure would remain the same, but streamlined to reflect our smaller size. My hope is that we can take the best of the various proposals and create, with as little disturbance as possible, a new expression of Methodism that will allow us to focus on our mission more than on our conflicts and disagreements. Regardless of what our name might be or how big of a group we are a part of, I want you to hear clearly that we, in this church, will continue to do ministry as we have been! We will open the doors to all of God’s children. We will serve the poor and care for the sick and worship God and learn and grow as disciples…we will be church! Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions as we move forward. I will do my best to keep you informed, and if there are any big changes I will, of course, call a meeting where we can gather to discuss what changes might occur. But as in our text a few weeks ago, “Do not be afraid! God’s got this!” See you in worship, Kent

WORDS FROM
JAN CAFFEY, LAY LEADER In July, my best friend’s husband committed suicide. He was one of the 22 veterans per day who does this. It’s a heartbreaking statistic. I was fortunate until now not to have had a loved one commit suicide. I was stunned and shaken. Alcoholism was the root of most of this man’s problems. I went to Rev. Dr. Chuck Stephens for pastoral counseling. He has a medical specialty in addiction treatment. He was a wealth of information. He explained to me what goes on in the brain of an alcoholic. Life is a constant struggle for them. He also told me what prolonged alcoholism does to deteriorate the brain. This new perspective was very helpful to me and to the widow. Chuck is worth his weight in gold! I want everyone to be aware of the resources we have at FUMC for pastoral counseling. All our clergy are trained in it and are available to help.
Immediate help is available from these national hotlines: 1-800-273-TALK (8255), the national suicide prevention hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255), choose option 1 or text 838255 for the veteran’s crisis line 1-800-USA-KIDS (872-5437), teen suicide hotline 1-866-488-7386 for the LGBTQ suicide hotline

YOUTH SINGERS STILL ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS The Youth Singers (youth 7th-12th grades) is still accepting new members! Rehearsals begin Sunday, September 8, 3:45-5:00 p.m. in the Choir Room. The Youth Singers is an excellent outlet for youth to be together, learn from each other, and be supported by each other. These singers also learn the discipline of being in a performing group as we prepare for worship each week. The music learned and sung is either direct scripture quotes, or scripture adaptations. By singing this type of music, youth learn theological concepts as well as good, solid musical concepts which they will carry with them the rest of their lives. Then, at the end of the school year, they get to travel to exciting destinations on the annual tour. Questions? Please call the music office, 471-8522, ext. 221.
CHAMBER ORCHESTRA OF THE SPRINGS PRESENTS ORGAN SPECTACULAR V! The Chamber Orchestra of the Springs opens its 36th season with another expansive Organ Spectacular! at First United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 15 at 2:30 p.m. This first concert of the 2019-2020 season opens with an exotic trip through Germany and France, ending at the mysterious Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California—home of Charles Foster Kane of Citizen Kane fame. Carol Wilson, Organist at First Christian Church, joins the Chamber Orchestra playing Rheinberger’s Organ Concerto No. 2 in G minor. Simon Jacobs, the new Organist-Choirmaster at Grace and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, performs Poulenc’s Organ Concerto in G minor. Joe Galema is the soloist for the local premiere of Michael Daugherty’s Once Upon a Castle. This piece rounds out the powerful and diverse program with a mind-boggling tour of Hearst Castle’s Neptune Pool and opulent parties in the Xanadu style, with a nod to Citizen Kane’s famous “Rosebud.” FUMC’s powerful Reuter organ, the largest instrument in Colorado Springs, is the real star of this performance. Specially priced tickets may be purchased in the hospitality center on September 8. 4 I The Encounter • First United Methodist Church
CHILDREN’S CHOIRS FUMC is one of the only churches in our area with a long history of children’s choirs. Children in these programs have a sense of purpose; a caring, supportive, and safe community environment, educational experiences, and spirituality with God at the center of all their musical activities. It is well worth the hour you and your children give each Wednesday from September to April. Cherub Choir is for children age 4 by September 1, and children age 5. It is directed by Ms. Janice Kinsley – a multitalented person with numerous years of experience as an organist, Youth Singer accompanist, and handbell director. Janice has an incredible love for, and understanding about children of this age. Chorister Choir is for children 1st through 3rd grades and will be led by Ms. Sarah Greenley, a talented musician who went through the FUMC children’s choir program and currently sings in the adult Chancel Choir. The Cathedral Choir is open to 4th, 5th, and 6th graders and will be directed by Ms. Nicole Louis, another experienced musician who has been through the children’s choir program, graduated from Youth Singers, and now sings in the adult Chancel Choir. We also welcome Trudy Fennewald, our new Children’s Choir Coordinator! She will introduce exciting new activities for our young singers. Rehearsals for the Children’s Choirs will be Wednesdays, 6:30-7:30 p.m., starting September 11. Questions? Call the music office, 719-884-2504.
MESSIAH COMING THIS HOLIDAY SEASON! If so, we want you to join us! Rehearsals for MESSIAH will begin on Thursday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m., for 45 minutes to an hour (rehearsal time will increase as we get closer to performance). WESLEY HERITAGE TOUR
CULTURE OF INVITATION
Bishop Karen Oliveto invites all lay and clergy on a journey to explore our Wesleyan Heritage from April 13-21, 2020. During these anxious times for those of us called United Methodists, there is no better way to respond than returning to our roots and deeply immersing ourselves in the rich history of our movement. Come celebrate and learn about our unique Wesleyan Heritage and the people called Methodists. We will have a brief informational meeting after each service on September 15 at the welcome desk. No RSVP or commitment are required. Learn more at http://bit.ly/wht2020 or contact Rev. Tiffany Keith at tiffanyk@fumc-cs.org.
A couple of years ago we made the decision to shift towards a more inviting culture. Have you joined us by inviting people to classes, groups, events volunteer opportunities, or to worship? We know people are more likely to attend church more often if they are connected to the community. Will you help create a culture of invitation by inviting at least two new people to two new things this fall? Together let us continue to share the great love and mystery of God through this community of grace. First United Methodist Church • The Encounter I 5

MISSION TRIP MOVING FORWARD There has been a large response from people interested in participating in a mission trip to the southwest desert. So we will begin planning on a trip possibly to the Tucson area. Rev. Dr. Chuck Stephens has been in contact with several people in the area who either run shelters for those seeking asylum or go into the desert and provide water and sustenance. One of the shelters has just moved to a new building which requires a handicapped ramp to be built. This might be a project we could perform while we learn the culture and needs of the asylum seekers. We can make a difference in our short time there. If you continue to have interest in this mission trip, that may take place either during Christmas or Spring Break, join us for a strategic meeting, September 8 at 9:30 a.m. in the Parlor. For more information, please contact Rev. Dr. Chuck Stephens at chucks@fumc-cs.org.
STEPHEN MINISTRY Everyone one who needs care is important in God’s eyes and the Stephen Ministers at FUMC are expressions of God’s care for one another. They provide a confidential, one-on-one ministry to those in need by listening and caring, and by offering prayers, encouragement, and support to those who are going through a difficult time of grief, terminal illness, loneliness, unemployment, hospitalization, childbirth, separation and divorce, discouragement, retirement changes, or spiritual crisis. The Stephen Ministers have gone through 50 hours of training, attend supervision meetings, and undergo continuing education. This may seem a lot to take on but time and time again they end up saying “I get much more out of being a Stephen Minister than I ever put into it.” Are you in need of special encouragement, care, or listening presence to help you through a difficult time that a Stephen Minister can give? Are you seeking for a deeper way to serve and show loving care to others at FUMC? Please keep Stephen Ministry in your prayers and feel free to call Rev. Ann at 471-8522, ext. 214 or Alicia Jarvis at 719-930-8227 for more information.
FAMILY PROMISE OF COLORADO SPRINGS Family Promise provides a way for local communities to respond to the needs of their homeless “neighbors.” Congregations have found the Family Promise mission provides an effective way to be involved in a hands-on outreach program that serves the homeless and fosters congregational unity and interfaith cooperation. Families arrive at their “home” church each day at 5:00 p.m. and leave at 7:00 a.m. the next morning to go to jobs, school, or the Family Promise Day Center (located on Tejon Street). Upon their arrival “home” each day, families have a hot, nutritious meal prepared by meal preparation volunteers and served by evening host volunteers. Overnight host volunteers arrive at bedtime to “sleep on the job” and to be available if something is needed during the night. On the first Sunday of the host week, other volunteers set-up the family bedrooms with cots and linens. We are enormously grateful to our warm and generous volunteers who continue to provide supplies, meals, set-up labor, and host our “families” during evenings and overnights. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need people who are willing to: Come meet families…Come help a child have a loving encounter…Come eat wonderful food… Come and do mission work. You would be needed for 3 hours, 3 times a year to finish any last minute heating of food, laying out the food (buffet-style), eating with the families, and assisting with clean-up. A whole lot of fun and deep sense of fulfillment just 3 times a year! You can bring a friend or family member as long as we can complete a background check for anyone interacting with the families. And best of all, training is a SNAP! Our Next Host Week at FUMC is September 22 – 29. Please stop by the Family Promise table on Sunday, September 8 to volunteer or to find out more about our Family Promise mission! Please contact Katy Adams at 471-3484 to volunteer or get more information.
FAMILY PROMISE FUNDRAISER Family Promise has begun a capital campaign to raise $1.5 million in order to find a larger day services house to support more families. On Sunday, September 8, FUMC will take a special offering at the end of each service in support of this Family Promise fundraiser. Please take this opportunity to help FUMC support this ministry in the Colorado Springs community.
