Welcome Welcome to a packed July/August edition of News & Views. Thank you to all those who have sent in a wealth of contributions this month. Congratulations to the Bowls Club on their recent success - see page 17. Also well done to all Sal’s Gals, some of whom are featured on the front page - there are more pictures on the centre pages. On a more negative note we still seem to have a dog poo issue in the community - see Martyn’s piece for more details. Events coming up include quiz nights and a tea party, a BBQ on the park at the end of August, and, of course, the Annual Garden Show will be coming up at the beginning of September, so make the most of the better weather. Llanferres Over 60s Club Our May meeting commenced with a brief talk by Rebecca Szekeli Denbighshire Community Navigator explaining details of a variety of ways of supporting people aged 50 plus and the help that is available. Leaflets were distributed. (See page 36 for more details)
giving us an insight of her work in a School in Ghana. We meet at 2.15 in the Village Hall. Everyone is most welcome.
We were then taken to Iceland on an illustrated talk by Helen Marsh. In June we we entertained by member Gwynneth Dillon and friends the "Liquorice". A welcome respite of light entertainment and laughter, followed by the usual Strawberry Cream Tea provided by Beryl Davies, Pat Armstrong and Betty Cook with help from members. An invitation was accepted from Ysgol Bro Famau for tea and entertainment on Wednesday 17th July. Our Speaker at our next meeting on Tuesday 9th July will be Jill Curry

Church News Open the Book We have recently told the story of how Jesus refused to turn children away. As always, the story involved excellent acting- some seriously heavy bouncers complete with sunglasses! It's always a joy to work with such class acts! This month we had a visitor from the United States who is learning how parish ministry works in our country. He came to watch an 'Open the Book' assembly and ended up playing Judas! Thank you Larry and a very warm welcome to Wales! Thank you to Gay for providing such a beautiful and thought- provoking decoration for the church at Pentecost. We are indebted to all who arrange the flowers and care so well for the church. Anyone who wishes to volunteer to help, financially or creatively, would always be welcomed.

We are delighted to announce that our curate, Kathy Stewart, was ordained into the priesthood on 29th June in St Asaph Cathedral. Many congratulations. Proposed Night Shelter Last winter, several churches in the Wrexham area hosted night shelters for the homeless over the coldest winter weeks. This year it is proposed that Pontblyddyn Church takes part in the rota. It will involve lots of diverse work including providing food, setting up camp beds, taking part in shifts at night, helping with transport, clearing up in the morning, and fundraising. Anyone can join in with this initiative, which was a tremendous success last year. Please contact one of us if you would like to become involved.
And Finally‌ We are delighted to announce that there will be a service of blessing of our animals on 3rd October (Feast of St Francis, the Patron Saint of Animals!). It should be a great event!
Worship Leaders One of the really positive moves forward in the Mission Area has been the ministry of locally trained Worship Leaders and Pastoral Assistants. They lead services and are valued in visiting the elderly and housebound. Kathy will be leading training sessions in the near future and all volunteers are very welcome.

Llanferres Gardening Club Village life is all about being part of a community - and “taking part”. What better example of that is the annual Llanferres Gardening Club Show. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the show, and it will be held on September 7th in the Village Hall. As always there are lots of classes to enter covering vegetables, fruit, flowers and flower arrangements. There is the opportunity to be named ‘top photographer’ of Llanferres and the chance to show off your handicraft skills.

Llanferres Bowls Club - Singles Champions 2018-2019 The village Indoor Bowling Club have won the Clwyd Vale Indoor Bowling Alliance Singles Championship. The competition is run between 8 villages with each team having 9 bowlers. This year Llanferres won through to play Llannefydd in the final held in the village hall at Clawddnewydd.

The small, but nonetheless useful proceeds will go towards the upkeep of our beautiful churchyard and buildings. This will be an ongoing project so please pass on any used cartridges to myself (green post box on the wall of 7 Cae Derwen); at Loggerheads Garage or pop them into the box at the back of the church.

Competition has always been close when Llanferres have played Llannefydd in the past but this year we got off to a great start by winning the first four games in a row. Llannefydd then pulled one game back but immediately Llanferres came back with another win which put the score at 5-1 to
Llannefydd were not put to shame in this match as the individual game scores were all very close. The points tally being 38-36 in favour of Llanferres. Winners medals and the singles trophy were presented to Llanferres and both teams enjoyed a well earned supper of tea and cake. To celebrate this victory the bowls club organised an evening meal at the Druid which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The Bowls club meets in the Village Hall on a Tuesday night at 7.00pm until 9.00pm and is open to all both young and old so why not come along and try it out - it's great fun and you would be made very welcome.

Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres Minutes of the GENERAL MEETING Held Thursday 11th APRIL 2019 Present: Cllr. John Almond (Chair), Cllrs Bob Barton, Amanda Curtis, Allan Morgans, Michael Cordiner, Rob Jones, Ivy Watts, Isla Watts and the Clerk, Mrs. G Dillon. There were Members of the public present. 1 Apologies: Cllr Martyn Holland, Cllr Jac Armstrong 2 Meeting Open to the Public - It was brought to the Community Council's attention by Mr Noel Headley, that the Church Authority were considering converting the Hearse House (adjacent to Church) into a public function room plus the usual domestic facilities. The cost is estimated to be around ÂŁ10,000 and ÂŁ12,000.00. The Committee were asking if the Community Council could support this idea. (To be discussed). Cllr Barton mentioned that, at a recent One Voice Wales Meeting, it was reported that no Community Council could be seen to support, financially, any Church building. (To be confirmed). In the light of the recent planning application for Holt Hostel in Maeshafn, it was suggested that concerns must be expressed about the location and setting. It is in an AONB. 3 Declarations of Interest - the Councillors were reminded that they should declare an interest at the commencement of the Meeting, or as soon as the Councillor affected becomes aware that they have a personal or personal and prejudicial interest in today's business. Any members declaring an interest are required to state clearly what that interest is. 4

a) A local resident recently noticed some strange white dots on the kerbs outside his house and contacted Cllr Holland to see if he knew why they were there. After some investigation, Cllr Holland confirmed that the Trunk Road Agency were planning on undertaking some improvements to 'dropped' kerbs on the village section of the A494 and the kerbs had been marked in advance. These alterations were being undertaken as Cllr Holland was writing this report. The installation of flashing lights on the A494 is also being considered. b) Cllr Holland had been involved with the DCC Officers in arranging another meeting with all relevant bodies regarding the roadside parking issues in Cadole and Loggerheads. The Chairs of both Llanferres and Gwernymynydd Community Councils will be invited, and the meeting is planned for early May. The Agenda is a number of options to discuss to reduce the parking in that area, especially if it snows. c) There has been a recent fire on Moel Famau, which was brought under control by the Countryside Services staff. d) National Government have opened a consultation with Local County Councils offering considerable amounts of money to any Community/authority that would consider being a site for a deep Nuclear waste facility. As our County Councillor, Cllr Holland spoke against this proposal on the grounds that the area has been mined and quarried for centuries and that this made the area unsuitable for any such storage site, that the Clwydian Range had pockets of Radon Gas which were believed could be disturbed by any deep excavation work and that we are a designated AONB. 5) Cllr Holland would like to thank the Community Council for their very kind 'Get Well' card and confirmed that his minor operation was a success. 6) Cllr Holland also wished Dr. Hugo Watts a speedy recovery after his recent road accident. 7) Cllr Holland also reported on the recent meeting held between the school, Village

Hall Committee and the Denbighshire County Council in respect of the new safety railings erected at the school. 8) They are considering installing a wicket gate for access to the Hall during school hours. During the day the Education Department have a duty of care to the children to stop public access through the school grounds during the school day. It was confirmed that the School and the Village Hall pay all invoices between them. There were plans to renew the windows and the Hall roof in the near future. The Chairman thanked Cllr Holland for his report. 6 Big Covert Wood - Report from Cllr Morgans - Cllr Morgans and Mr A King had drafted a very detailed Report together with photographs, highlighting ten tracks for possible adoption. Another issue had arisen, and this was the felling of trees. The new owners did not appear to have a licence to fell trees. Only one owner was seen to be replanting on their site. Cllr Holland has contacted David Sheil. Countryside Services with regard to this issue. The Clerk has also contacted Natural Resources Wales. If the Footpath orders are progressed, this will help preserve the woodland. The Chair thanked Cllr Morgans and Tony King for their invaluable contribution to this project. We now await an update. 7 Minutes of the General Meeting held on 14th March 2019 - These were accepted and signed by the Chairman as being a correct record. 8 Matters Arising - a) Cae Derwen - Cllr Holland has been in contact with Allen Homes and is hoping to have a meeting with them soon. b) The grid gully is blocked up again in Tafarn y Gelyn. Cllr Holland to follow up. 9 Reports from Other Meetings - Cllr Barton attended the 'One Voice Wales' area meeting in Pentrefoelas. A
representative from the Denbighshire Voluntary Services spoke with regard to grants available for individuals and carers through Dementia Care. There had been no response to date from the IPRW with regard to Councillors Payments being paid pro rata if they left during their term of office. Other items covered were the AONB presentations at the Stiwt Theatre, Rhos, Wrexham with a presentation from the Dark Skies Officer. Cllr Barton also attended the Annual Conference held in Builth Wells and gave a report on the awards made. Mold Town Council won five 'runners up' awards, with Higher Kinnerton winning the award for Best Website. Llanbedr took the lead with Cllr Barton in setting up bespoke training courses for local Community Councils. Eight Councils took part. There was mention of a possible grant being made available for Community Councils working together. The Chair thanked Cllr Barton for his verbal report. 10 Maintenance in the Community - the Millennium Fountain - repair is still outstanding. Despite Dr. Watts having been injured in an accident, White Oak Properties will continue with the maintenance contracts for the Community Council. With regard to the possibility of the County Council installing disabled parking areas in the community, the response was 'due to the precedent it would set and the financial, administrative and operational pressures it would impose, the Council does not provide on-street disabled parking spaces to specific premises.' 11 Planning Issues - 21/2019/0197 Location: Tan-y-Graig Maeshafn Proposal: Erection of replacement dwelling, detached garage and associated works Resolved: to offer no objection to the proposal but to comment that they should be subject to a survey on the statutory rules which denote the width of the retained public footpath (No.522/34/1. Also, the need for a geological survey as a vein runs on that

Resolved: the Community Council agree to these proposals in principle but would ask why a Listed Building Application has not been submitted? 12 Risk Assessments Maes Ysgawen - following a past site visit by Cllr Almond and Dr.H Watts, a site was chosen to plant the large number of daffodils ready for next spring. Maeshafn - awaiting update for the Playing Field ownership. LawnOrder have carried out a maintenance of the Green and submitted an Invoice. A Play Inspection has been carried out of the Play Area. The Report was circulated. It highlighted several low-risk problems. *May Agenda We are currently awaiting the Grant Application response in order to put in motion some of these issues. Dog Poo Bin - the Clerk has ordered the bin - awaiting a response. Llanferres Memorial - nothing to report. The vacancy will be advertised in the usual way. b) The Church will be applying for a maintenance grant for the churchyard. c) A CREDIT will be forthcoming for the change from using the Hall for the Community Council Meeting to the School. d) The Clerk Mrs Gwyneth Dillon announced that she would be retiring at the end of August 2019. Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres b) Cllr Holland's meeting with Morris Homes has been postponed at the request of the Company. The Trunk Road Agency has now completed all the pavement improvements on the stretch of the A494 through Llanferres. c) The tree has been removed from the school yard over the Easter holiday and a machine will now be used to remove the roots in the pipe at the rear of Cae Derwen and Tyn Llan. This should resolve the running water down Tyn Llan when it rains. d) Cllr Holland attended a constructive meeting, involving the school, Education Authority and the Village Hall Committee. The Village Hall Committee had raised concerns about the process for getting repairs completed in the Hall. The Governing Body raised concerns about the fact that all the repairs were coming out of the school budget. The Village Hall Committee will be looking for ways to keep the repairs to a minimum and the Education Authority will look at how major repairs are funded. The Education Authority had funded the new toilets and promised to look at the Village Hall roof and windows as part of their planned maintenance programme for 2020. (Any unseen emergency repairs elsewhere may put this back). e) The leaks reported in the new toilets have now been resolved. f) Cllr Holland reported the blocked gullies on the Maeshafn Road once again. A large pool was forming after heavy rain and the wash from passing cars is affecting the road side banks. g) Cllr Holland recently attended a presentation by GwE ( The North Wales Education Monitoring Team) about the Welsh Governments proposed changes to education in Wales. Testing will be replaced by assessments but when Cllr Holland asked how these assessments will be undertaken and how the Counties Scrutiny Committees will monitor schools and children's progress, it appears that no guidelines have been given to date by Welsh Government!! One officer said that they will still have testing at sixteen but as it was pointed out this, will be

far too late! Watch this space. Cllr Barton recommended recourse to the School/Village Hall Lease. As far as was known, minor bills went through the school but major bills went through the County. The largest item of expenditure to the school was the electricity. The renewal date for the Lease was 2021. The Chairman thanked Cllr Holland for his comprehensive report. Reports From Other Meetings - It was reported that Cllrs' Barton, John Almond and Mr. David Jones met the Green Flag Representative on the site of Maes Ysgawen. Photographs were taken and we now await the result. Big Covert Wood - Report from Cllr Morgans Cllr Morgans met with Mr Adrian Walls and Ms Tania Evans (Footpaths Officers). A separate form would have to be completed for each path. Work has already started on the redraft. Two paths have been missed and information is being sought for the owners. All owners for all the paths need to be identified as a Notice would have to be served individually. Arrangements will be made to work alongside Denbighshire County Council in this regard. Maintenance in the Community - the Millennium Fountain - repair is still outstanding. It was agreed to contact Mr Ian Logan in the first instance. The gulley in Tafarn-y-Gelyn is still not been cleaned. (Cllr Holland). The residents of Glendale have complained about nettles growing under their fence from Maes Ysgawen. This should be resolved as the borders have all been strimmed. Planning Issues - 21/2019/0145 Location: Aberduna Farm Proposal: Erection of 2 no. livestock buildings, access track and associated works. Following a discussion the following response was agreed: The Community Council had major concerns about the scale of the proposal. Is there a robust business case to support this application? The Community Council also wish to endorse and agree with the AONB representations.

Lawn Order the next maintenance application of the Green will be 19th June 2019. Following the Play Inspection carried out of the Play Area, where it highlighted several low-risk problems, it is now confirmed that the Grant Application, to put in motion some of the issues raised, has been received (Copy to Cllr Morgans). Updated quotes for the work will be made and the work programme put into place. This will follow a site visit. Dog Poo Bin - the Clerk has ordered the bin - no response to date. LLANFERRES BADMINTON CLUB Our summer club is now in full swing with courts on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30 - 9.30. We operate until the end of August on a pay as you go basis with everyone welcome, so if you fancy picking up a racket for the first time or seeing if skills learnt in a previous life are still there, now is the time.

Our junior club finished at Whitson for the summer break and will start again in September. To mark the end of the badminton year, we held an awards ceremony to mark the fantastic achievements of all our junior players. Some have achieved success in tournaments and are part of County squads and others have improved hugely this season. But above all they enjoy playing.
SENIORS As part of the summer club, we are now in the middle of coaching sessions for all players who wish to take part, helping us get match ready for the 2019/20 season. Following the end of season AGM the club has decided to enter an additional team into the local league which will give us 4 teams in total, one in Division 1, two in Division 2 and our new team in Division 3. A note from your County Councillor After one of hottest and driest summers in 2018 what a contrast in 2019. This week we have seen some of the heaviest rain falls since the year 2000 with the River Alyn bursting its banks through out the ward. Llanarmon Yn Ial was virtually cut off because although Llanarmon village is on high ground all the roads in and out of the village are on the flood plain. Water once again poured out of the old Pistyll Gwyn quarry closing the B5430 and stalling the engines of many a small car that tried to get through. Sadly one property was flooded in Llanarmon and a number were effected by local streams that turned into raging torrents. The Grounds of the Country Park at Loggerheads and the old mill were flooded and the cafe, shop and walks were closed as a temporary safety measure. Mother nature is amazing and within twenty four hours of the rain stopping most of the water had retreated back into the river. I have received complaints about a small number of people who are not cleaning up after their dogs especially around Llanferres and down towards the Fairy Glen. The Community Council have ordered a number of bins for the Maeshafn area which the county will empty and I will be asking

for warning signs to be installed in both villages. Can I remind residents that their is an automatic £100 fine if you are caught leaving your dog poo behind. Please bag it and bin it and if there are no bins in the area please take your bags home and place them in your black bin. Sadly dog poo can contain harmful bacteria that can cause blindness in children and adults. Please always act responsibly and bag it and bin it. I am pleased to confirm that the small section of road by the Youth Hostel in Maeshafn will be resurfaced once the county have completed additional drainage work in that area. The County’s Grass Cutting Contractors are out and about cutting the grass at all junctions and they will be back in and around August to cut all the highway verges. Because of budget constraints there will only be one full cut this year. There is a considerable dip in the Forestry road just before you get to Bryn Eithin. This has been photographed and reported to DCC. I have asked them to investigate the cause of the subsidence and under take the necessary repairs. If you travel towards Llanarmon Yn Ial you will notice that the Give-way sign at the Valley Lodge junction has now been replaced by a new Stop Sign. I hope that this along with the rumble strips will help reduce the number accidents at this particular black spot. After a number of complaints about speeding traffic through Maeshafn I

The buses have once again had problems turning in Maeshafn village centre by the village green. This is because of the number of vehicles parked on both sides of the road around the green. If the bus can not turn they may refuse to come into the village and we could lose the service. Please park responsibly between the hours of 9.00am and 6.00pm.

Llanferres News & Views July/August 2019 Hello, I'm Rebecca Szekely and I work for Age Connects (a charity delivering community projects from their offices on the high street in Denbigh and Llandudno). I am a Community Navigator delivering the Denbighshire County Council Social Prescribing Service (a mechanism for linking patients with non-medical sources of support within their community) in the South of the County (South2: covering Llangollen, Corwen, Ruthin and surrounding villages). This service is a joint project with the British Red Cross, Denbighshire County Council, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and in collaboration with the third sector. I am able to provide information, advice and assistance for people to access support and services, which in turn helps people maintain their health and wellbeing and a community focused approach to social care. This could be helping people find groups to attend, specialist information such as support with bereavement, caring roles and health conditions or finding practical support such as cleaning or gardening. I

can also look at ways to o v e r c o m e barriers to help people engage within the community and live independently. My particular interest is working with people to discover their hobbies and interests and try to find activities to match these hobbies and in turn enabling individuals to take more responsibility for their own health. Llanferres News & Views July/August 2019 During May, Nora Carlin, the founder of CARE UK, travelled to Lesvos in Greece to visit the latest branch of the CARE UK Charity. Here's what she had to say from her first visit. Yesterday, we visited CARE UK Becky's Bathhouse and the Olive Grove, a refugee camp next to the main Moria camp. From the outside the camps look very grim. The Bathhouse is a lovely relaxing place that offers a couple of hours respite from the camps. Gently organised with everything available for women to have a shower, do their hair, and have a sit down and a chat, whilst their children play - away from the miserable conditions of the camps. It was humbling to see that the donations we send furniture, toys, education materials etc make a difference and are much needed. We are already compiling another big list! The Olive Grove Camp was basic but full of welcoming refugees. One group of lovely ladies made us tea. ?? Our next container to Lesvos is 1st June. Please keep the donations coming. Nora Carlin, Founder, CARE UK Charity Early in June, the 50th container full of essential aid for refugees was sent out from CARE UK Charity to the Hope Project in Lesvos. However, new refugees continue to arrive on the Greek islands despite dangerous sea crossings - and many lives are still being lost on a weekly basis. These tragedies are not reported via the media so much now, but the refugee crisis continues, giving the local RENEW team more challenges in finding the right donations to send that will make a small
difference to the lives of those held in the camps. We are now collecting for two different containers during July. Container 51 will go to Lesvos. This is a shared container with the Starfish Foundation and Refugee4Refugees. The most urgent items required are as follows: ● Men's clothing (Small to Large sizes only please) - trousers (priority small sizes), shirts, lightweight jackets, pyjamas ● Women's lightweight jackets and pyjamas ● Summer shoes - crocs, sandals etc. (all sizes 20-47) ● Boys and girls - trousers and shirts (10 year plus), lightweight jackets, pyjamas ● Baby grows - 0-12 months ● Summer hats - baseball caps, visors (for adults and children) ● New underwear and socks for all ● Backpack, bags, spectacles ● Toiletries (biodegradable/environmentally friendly if possible, no aerosols please) Container number 52 will go to John Sloan at the new Refugee Support Dignity Centre in Nicosia, Cyprus - and this one has a very specific list of needs……… ● Bicycles (including those that need repairing) & DIY Tools ● Pushchairs ● Sewing Machines, Wool & Knitting Needles ● Textiles & Sheets ● Saucepans, Knives and Forks etc ● Tea, coffee, sugar & tinned food ● Nappies & Baby Wipes (biodegradable if possible) ● Board Games (Chess & Backgammon for adults, plus children's games) ● Children's handicrafts & School Stuff (text books, pens, crayons, colouring books) ● Children's shoes ● Men's small and medium clothing (winter only)

The Corn Mills of Llanferres Historically the River Alyn provided a ready source of cheap power, except of course in conditions of severe drought (as for example in 1864, 1896 and 1929). At various times there were eight separate water wheels operating within the parish: five of which were associated with the lead mines and three with the grinding of corn. The corn mills were associated with the Plymog, Glan rafon and Colomendy estates. We know virtually nothing about the smallest corn mill which was on Plymog Farm. This water wheel was not fed by the River Alyn but by a water course, or leat, that ran down from the Nant Plymog area. The mill probably fell into disuse after the estate was purchased and attached to the Glan rafon Estate in 1799. The other two corn mills were associated with the two large estates in the parish. Namely the Llanferres Mill on the Glan rafon Estate and the Pentre Mill on the Colomendy Estate. Both these mills are of some antiquity and we have records of their occupation going back to the seventeenth century. Llanferres Mill, situated adjacent to the main road and opposite to the Loggerheads Garage, was fed from a leat that began near the Glan rafon Hall. The waterwheel is still in position but is no longer able to rotate. The mill was originally Listed by CADW as being of historic importance. However it was deListed in 1995 after considerable alterations were done to the structure during the latter part of the twentieth century. Robert Davies lost a legal dispute with farmer John Jennings of Aberduna Farm in 1891. Mr Fernyhough complained to the District Council in 1926 about the quality of his water supply that he maintained was polluted. Pentre Mill, within the present day Loggerheads Country Park, retains its Listed status and has undergone considerable restoration in the hands of successive County Councils. This mill, and the then Loggerheads bridge, was depicted in a painting by John Ingleby in 1796. The painting is titled "View from the Loggerheads near Carreg Carn March Arthur between Mold and Ruthin". The mill was purchased by the Williams family in about 1900 and was operated by them until the early 1940s. During the slack season for grinding corn the water wheel powered a saw mill. Before mains electricity was brought to the area in the late 1940s the water wheel was used to generate electricity for four nearby dwellings and the Loggerheads Inn. The mill is still capable of being used for its original purpose as its workings are intact and just need adjustment. The mill building is open to the public on a daily basis.
