Llanferres News & Views July/August 2019

Welcome Welcome to this our final edition of News & Views. We would like to thank everyone for their positive support in recent weeks, but also over the 11 years that we’ve been putting together News & Views. Without the fantastic contributions, both in terms of articles and photographs, as well as financial support the magazine would not have survived. And of course, those who have selflessly delivered the magazine for no reward (other than our heartfelt thanks) have always been key to making it happen! The good news is that new publishers have offered to take over and will keep the magazine going. Sandrine Autissier and Dominic Maher of Hafan Deg take over in the new year and will obviously need your continued support to help the

magazine to not just survive, but to thrive in the future. Their email address for future contributions is: news.and.views.magazine@gmail.com We have struggled to make the finances work this year, so any final contributions through the door or via the box at Loggerheads would be welcome please. One of our main sources of income has been the donation envelopes distributed with October News & Views, but we haven’t sent them round this year as we knew we were finishing our stint. However, that has left us a little short to pay for the printing bill for this edition. If we end up wth a surplus this will be passed on to local causes. Thank you once again for all your support. Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan

Llanferres Over 60s Club Although we live in a beautiful countryside area we are aware that we are part of an important industrial area. As we walk the paths we see the Miners Arms, a reminder that miners were very important members of the community and relics of mine workings are there to be seen. Carol Bowen put it all in perspective - then and now. It was a very interesting meeting on September 10th. Our next meeting is November 12th at 2.00pm

Church News Open the Book

Christmas

Kathy and I had a bonus surprise when we turned up to do 'Open the Book' recently. The whole school was taking part in a Harvest Service. We were treated to a truly inspirational presentation on the UNICEF convention of 'The Rights of the Child', the children sung their hearts out and there were beautiful musical performances. We even got to present the story of Peter walking on the water after the break! If there is one thing that gives us all hope for the future, it is spending time with these wonderful young people.

We don't as yet have all our services finalised, but we will have a Carol Concert on Thursday 19th December , a Crib service at 5pm on Christmas Eve, a late Mass on Christmas Eve and a Christmas Morning Praise on Christmas day.

Messy Church This continues to be its usual Messy self. September's Messy Church told the story of Jonah and the Whale, and Harvest was celebrated in October. We will be looking at the stories of some of our saints in November and there will be a joyous Messy Christmas to complete the year. We meet in Gwernaffield Church Hall at 4 pm on the Third Sunday of the month and at St James , New Brighton in school holidays. Please contact Wendy (07840353690) or Kathy (07500936985) if you would like to join in the fun!

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club 45th Annual Show A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the Annual Village Show on 7th September, including exhibitors, judges, those who attended the show and those who helped in the task of setting up and clearing up afterwards. The number of entries was slightly higher than last year though still significantly lower than has been achieved in the past. However, despite the poor growing season the village managed to put on a show worth seeing. The art and junior sections were again omitted from the 2019 schedule due to the low number of entries in these sections for a number of years. We included an art class in the adult handicraft section this year to gauge whether it might be popular enough to reinstate the art section and children can, of course, enter any of the show classes if they wish. If anyone has any ideas about

what could be included in the show, we would love to hear from you. Why not come along to one of the Garden Club meetings in the village hall on the second Monday of the month everyone is welcome. Look out for the programme of events for 2020. I would encourage everyone to get involved, enter the show and support this traditional village event. The auction, as usual, provided a donation to the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund. We look forward to an even more successful 46th Annual Show in 2020. The next meeting of the garden club will be the AGM at 7.30 pm on Monday 11th November. This will be followed by a Members Buffet.

For the first time the club has entered 4 senior teams in the Senior North East Wales Badminton League with the A team in Division 1, the B team and recently promoted C team in Division 2 and the new D team in Division 3. team to promotion with similar results in her new role with the Blazin' Bs. A tough start with a loss to Flint B was quickly followed up with a convincing win against Rossett B. The C team began their first season in Division 2 with tough games against Hawarden & Prestatyn A and are still looking for their first win under Captain Moira Bonar. Dynamo Ds, captained by Sarah Chapman started well with a great game against Connah's Quay but only managed to secure 2 match wins despite some really close games and amazing debut performances from Luc Seago, junior player Hannah Harrison and new member and fellow junior Matthew Swash. A week later against Flint C, the narrow losses were impressively translated into hard fought wins with a 6 -2 win against a team with hugely more experience.

JUNIORS The junior club caters for children from 7 to 15 and offers weekly coaching, the opportunity to learn to play games and for those who want it, competitive play in 2 teams in the North East Wales Junior League.

Both senior & junior clubs are now full but a waiting list operates and for more information or a place on the waiting list please contact Claire Halestrap clairehalestrap@harrisondd.co.uk

Have you renewed your Bus Pass yet? If you have a green bus pass with Denbighshire County Council on it like the one on the right, you’ll need to renew it by the end of the year with a replacement Transport for Wales card.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

This can be done quite easily online at: https://portal.tfw.wales/ If you need help or do not have access to the Internet, ask a friend, neighbour or relative, or ask for help at the library. The online portal was struggling to cope with the demand earlier, but it appears to be working fine now. The existing green passes will no longer be valid after 31st December 2019.

As well as free travel by bus, the new card will also give discounts on some rail services in Wales. Anyone resident in Wales aged 60 and over, or who meets the Government’s disability eligibility criteria can apply for a card.

CHRISTMAS FAIR Friday 29th November.

Latest reports from the Hope Project in Lesvos have confirmed that the refugee situation is currently the worse they have seen since 2015, when the crisis originally came to the world’s attention. ● Moira Camp alone now holds just under 15,000 refugees-its capacity is 3,000 ● Around 550 unaccompanied children and teenagers are having to fend for themselves-some are as young as ten years old ● The Hope Project is giving aid to between 150-200 people per day, but everyone is desperately in need of help ● Winter is fast approaching………the majority of refugees are living in horrible overcrowded conditions, where several families are forced to share a tent. Every year people die in these tents due to the cold.…

We are now collecting warm and/or waterproof WINTER clothing and footwear, and urgently need teenage clothing and small-medium sized clothing for men. Larger sizes can be accepted for recycling to raise funds that we will use to purchase new underwear and toiletries for men, women and children. Blankets, sleeping bags, tents, and warm hats, gloves & scarves are also needed. There is also an urgent need for clean, good quality Moses Baskets and warm newborn clothing and sleepsuits, size 1 nappies, nappy sacks, baby wipes and hand sanitisers. If you can help RENEW to help others by donating any of these items, but you are unable to drop off your donations at Holywell or Buckley, then please let me know and I will come and collect your donations from you. A note from your County Councillor After one of the driest starts to the year, the end of this year promises to be one of the wettest with the temperatures falling as fast as the leaves on the trees. In my own garden I have a large flowering ornamental crab apple tree which every spring is full of blossom and every autumn I have to collect the crab apples by the bucket load. This spring it was once again full of blossom but I do not know what happened to the fruit. For the first time in twenty years there were no crab apples and the tree is looking very sorry for itself. Sadly my crab apple tree is not the only tree to be acting strangely. At a recent AONB meeting we received a report to say that up to 80% of the Ash trees in the Alyn Valley have been infected by Ash Die Back. Another imported problem that will have a devastating effect on our landscape especially in areas where the vast majority of our trees are ash. As you all know we had to sadly remove the tree in the corner of the school field because its roots had grown into the surface water drainage pipes. I am pleased to report that after the recent heavy rains the new pipes worked well and we did not get the flooding we have had in the past in Tyn Llan. I have taken pictures of the road surfaces at the entrance to Cae

22

Gwyn and the entrance to Cae Derwen and both of these have been forwarded to DCC Highways with a request to repair them as soon as possible. I have recently spoken to our local North Wales Police team about a range of issues from local oil thefts, County Line drug gangs, fly tipping, the attempted theft of a dog, arson and strange vehicles in our ward. We are looking into organising "Whats App Groups" and the trialing of Community CCTV. Once I have more information I will let you know although I do believe that we already have some excellent ways of letting people know when there is a problem in Llanferres. As winter approaches I have asked to meet once again with the Police, Highways and the Counties parking enforcement team to plan for snow and the inevitable problems we have in Cadole, Loggerheads and around Moel Famau. I still believe that we need to do more to make certain areas unattractive to those who want to sledge with natural barriers etc. Once again concerns have been raised about the amount of tree felling going on in the Big Covert. At a time when we are being asked to plant more trees because of climate change it seems a tragic shame that we are felling trees in many of our established woodlands. Land owners are allowed to fell trees if they have a license granted by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and they are also allowed to complete a limited amount of coppicing. To

The Holt Youth Hostel, Maeshafn Rambling in the countryside became a very popular activity in the early twentieth century. This led to the formation of the Youth Hostels Association (YHA) in late 1929 with the object of providing basic accommodation for ramblers and cyclists. The Association looked for possible hostel sites in north Wales and decided that Maeshafn would be suitable for the site of their first custom built hostel. In 1931 the YHA rented the present site of about 5 and a half acres from Mrs Taylor of Colomendy. The timber chalet-style hostel was designed by the famous architect Clough Williams-Ellis who also designed Portmeirion. The hostel had a few quirky features - three tier canvas slung bunks and sash windows operated by pulling a leather strap. The Association was fortunate in having a generous benefactor (Messrs. Alfred Holt Shipping Co.) who was prepared to finance the construction and fitting out of the building. The hostel opened in 1931. A well was sunk to provide drinking water and was used until a piped supply became available in 1939. At the Colomendy Estate sale in 1937 the property was bought by a benefactor and donated to the YHA. The hostel was the highest in Wales until the Pen y pass hostel opened in 1967. In the first year of operation the hostel was offering meals - bacon and eggs for 4d, sausage and mash for 4d, ham and eggs for 6d and a full three course dinner for one shilling (5 pence in today's currency). The hostel operated throughout World War II (many other hostels were requisitioned by the government for other purposes). In the 1970s The Maeshafn and District Rural Association (MADRA) used

the hostel, when it was closed to customers, for social events and public meetings. The building was refurbished in 1978-9 and the original windows were replaced. Following the Bradford City Football Stadium fire all the Youth Hostel buildings in Wales were inspected by the fire service. As a result the Holt Hostel was closed throughout 1986 to allow modifications to be done to upgrade the fire precautions and to improve the strength of the foundations. Considerable fund raising activity followed in order to raise the sum of ÂŁ12,000 needed. This included the selling of a limited edition history of the hostel entitled "No boots in the Common Room". However the declining use of the hostel meant that it eventually ran at a loss and the YHA decided to close it in 2004. Although MADRA made a bid to buy the property it was sold to a higher bidder. It was, for a short period, run as the "Eco Librium Relaxation and Holistic Therapy Centre". It subsequently passed into the hands of the current owner. CADW: Welsh Historic Buildings Listed the building in 2004 as being of Special Architectural and Historic Interest.

The Curlew is again in the news, but for all the wrong reasons. Its rapid decline due to agriculture, two or three crops of grass are cut for silage and the chicks are destroyed in the process. W. B. Yeats the Irish poet, born in 1865 wrote about the 'Call of the Curlew being heard no more', so I don't think the Curlew has ever has it easy. Yeats bought a castle in Ireland in 1916 where he could get away and close to wildlife. Dylan Thomas, Benjamin Britten and the politician and ornithologist Edward Grey have all written in praise of the 'Bubbling' call of the Curlew. With the body about the same size as a Mallard Duck, long legs and a long-curved bill the Curlew is the ideal wading bird. Male and female are almost identical with the female being longer. They nest on the uplands where their haunting call carries a long way. The nest is a scrape in the ground lined with grass where four green and brown eggs are laid from March to May. Sheltered by tall tussock vegetation, both parent birds will incubate the eggs for about four weeks. Once hatched the chicks are very vulnerable to crows and foxes.

A Walk There are plans to do this in Norfolk to help on the the Corncrake which is in a worse state of Wilde side decline than the Curlew. This might be more difficult as the Corncrake is a summer migrant and will have to be reared in large pens in the open, where they can see t h e moon and stars to help them on their migratory journey. I have just spent a long weekend in Llandudno hoping to see Curlews in their usual winter feeding grounds. But I was too early as the fields where I usually see them were deserted, except for a few Rooks with large fat young following them. The summer visitors have gone and we have a quiet couple of weeks before flocks of winter thrushes, such as Redwings arrive to take advantage of the Rowan Berries. More next time, Eddie. Eddie. Up until a few years ago Curlews always nested on the wet ground around what was the Youth Hostel and part grown chicks could be seen running along the road verges. With change of land use, these are gone. I would like to see Curlew eggs collected from vulnerable places and hatched behind wire netting with bantams and when the young are feathered, released. This will give them a better chance of survival. Copyright November 2019 Eddie Wilde.
