Welcome Welcome to the May/June issue. We’ve featured the Playing Field on the front this month, as there’s the AGM in May and the organisation desperately needs more local support. Please attend if you can. Our best wishes go to Hugo Watts and his family after his recent most unfortunate accident. Also it’s good to see Josh Griffiths on the mend. Good luck to Paddy & Gilly as they set off to their new home in Cornwall - we’ll all miss them! We have to mention the Druid Inn quizzes run by Derek, Cherie and Sam, especially as we received a very generous donation at the April event. Many thanks to all who have supported the quizzes so far. If you haven’t been along yet it’s certainly worth attending, even if it’s just for the ‘Play Your Cards Right’ at the end, as we know from personal experience!! Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan

Llanferres Over 60s Club At our March Meeting David Cummings took us on a Tour of South Africa’s Kruger National Park which David had recently visited, showing photographs of the animals and birds there. Then on to Cape Town where we were treated to views of the locality plus all the native flora and fauna showing his photography and knowledge to their full extent. David is a regular visitor to the Club each visit thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. At our April meeting Rhianon Evans spoke about the artist James Dickson Innes, who worked between North Wales and the continent. Her enthusiasm for his work was backed by filmed examples showing his use of water colour and oils. Sadly he died at the young age of 26 in 1914. Examples of his work have been shown at the Water Art Gallery. Our meeting on May 14th will be addressed by Helen Marsh, who will tell us about a Children's Trip to Iceland. June 11th will be Strawberry Cream Tea time again, to be followed by a secret entertainment! We look forward to you company in the Village Hall at 2.15pm

Church News Open the Book We have been enjoying our visits to Bro Famau. Most recently we were joined by Fiona, a teaching student from Germany. She helped us to tell the story of the paralysed man whose friends took him to see Jesus and lowered him in through the roof! Thank you to John Foxlee who stood in at short notice recently and who did such a good job, he is certain to be asked again!

Mold Foodbank We still have a box at the back of the church which takes donations for the foodbank. Any contributions are gratefully accepted. Toiletries (soap, toothpaste, sanitary goods, etc. are also needed).

Church Opening We are happy to begin opening the church during the daytime for anyone who would like to spend a few moments of tranquillity in our beautiful church. Anyone who would like to help in the rota of opening and closing the church would be very welcomed.

Lent and Easter We had some very moving and thought provoking services in the lead up to Easter, both at Llanferres and in the Mission Area. All culminated in a joyous celebration on Easter Sunday. The church was beautifully decorated with Easter flowers as always. Thank you for everyone who worked so hard and took part in all the services and the preparation beforehand.

This is Daniel dressed up as a High Priest of the Temple. Absolutely no typecasting whatsoever!

Messy Church We had our Gwernaffield Messy Church on Palm Sunday and the Mold Messy Church on the Thursday after Easter. We made Palm Crosses, played 'Pin the Tail on the Donkey', decorated Easter Cards and Easter eggs and made Hot Cross Buns. All accompanied children are welcome to join in the fun and the mess! If you are interested, please contact Wendy (07840353690) or Kathy (07500936985) for more details. Next Messy Church will be at Gwernaffield on May 19th.

Llanferres Gardening Club The Llanferres Parish Gardening Club opened what promises to be a very entertaining year of talks and activities on March 11th with a presentation on Roses. The talk was given by Mr Zdenek Valkoun-Walker, who is head gardener at the famous Dorothy Clive Gardens. Mr. Valkoun-Walker demonstrated both his vast in-depth knowledge of his subject and his very apparent love for roses, in a comprehensive talk which covered rose varieties - how to chose them for position, fragrance, colour and longevity, and how best to cultivate and care for them. Following the talk, the traditional raffle was held.

the first Saturday in September. The show schedule is now available so why not take a look and see what you can enter this year. Hugo Watts Honorary Secretary

By way of a change from previous activities the meeting held on April 8th revolved around a gardening themed quiz, set by the secretary, with drinks and nibbles to aid concentration. The quiz was keenly contested and it was pleasing to see some new faces join the usual members. The winners of the quiz were a team of three - Josh and Chris Griffiths and Ann Catherall. It was good to hear at the end that everyone went away having learnt something new. The next two meetings will be held on May 13th, when there will be a talk entitled “The Dry Garden”. On June 10th we have an intriguing talk entitled “On the Shady Side”. As always new and old members will be very welcome. As usual, the Annual Show will take place in the village hall on

Do You use the Llanferres Park ? Do you want it to continue ? Then please attend the AGM on May 15th (7.30pm Village Hall) I have been Chairman for the last 10 years and will stand down at the end of April. Wayne has been treasurer for 4 years and also plans to stand down at the end of April. Currently there isn’t a replacement for either post and nobody has come forward. The current situation is that the LPFRA has been extremely successful over the last 20+ years, but this success is proving difficult to maintain due to a lack of volunteers to become Officers and Committee Members and to dedicate time to help running the organisation. We have a great attendance at the working party but there is more needed to run the park. LPFRA requires a minimum 12 members (9 plus 3 officers) to continue as a charity.

LPFRA held a meeting with Members of the Llanferres Community Council and the wider community on 16 October 2018 to discuss concerns and share ideas on how to ensure that the park continues to be maintained and operates to the highest of standards. All attendees were in agreement that it would be a great shame if the park had to close its gates and everyone was in agreement that we need to come up with a solution that works for all parties involved. Please can you let me know if you are able to help. AGM to be held 15th May. Thanks, Dan 810461 15

Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres Minutes of the GENERAL MEETING Held Thursday 7th February 2019 Present: Cllr. John Almond (Chair), Cllrs Bob Barton, Allan Morgans, Michael Cordiner, Rob Jones, Ivy Watts, Isla Watts, Cllr Martyn Holland and the Clerk, Mrs. G Dillon. There were Members of the public present. 1 Apologies: Cllr Amanda Curtis, Cllr Jac Armstrong was not present 2

Meeting Open to the Public - no items raised.

3 Declarations of Interest - the Councillors were reminded that they should declare an interest at the commencement of the Meeting, or as soon as the Councillor affected becomes aware that they have a personal or personal and prejudicial interest in today's business. Any members declaring an interest are required to state clearly what that interest is. 4 Declarations of Interest - Cllr Ivy Watts and Cllr Isla Watts declared a personal and prejudicial interest in Item 15 Bills being close relatives to the Payee. 5 Llanferres Playing Field Association update - The Chairman introduced Dan Hurst, the Chairman of the Association. Mr. Hurst provided the Community Council with the option that they take back ownership and financially support the main items like, Inspections and the Insurance. A Committee would be formed to carry out all other fundraising activities and volunteer work parties throughout the year. A Management Group could be formed to liaise directly with the Community Council. There followed a short discussion as further information was needed with regard to the Charitable status. Cllr Barton proposed that an article be put in the News & Views and a letter to all households to advertise for new members to ensure the continuity of the Park. The Clerk will obtain information relating to the possibility

of the Community Council adding the Park to their Insurance. Agreed that the current LPFRA forward all their current insurance details and ROSPA details to the Clerk. 6 Minutes of the General Meeting held on 10th January 2019 - with one correction under Item 8 Setting the Precept Budget for 2019/20 - 'The Maintenance funding has been increased for Maes Ysgawen and Maeshafn should read 'The Maintenance funding for Maes Ysgawen and Maeshafn has NOT increased.' These were accepted and signed by the Chairman as being a correct record. 7 Matters Arising - 1) The Zig, Zag lines outside the school are now in situ. It is confirmed that they are only enforceable during school hours. The School Bus should not be parked on the lines. 2) Confirmation has been received that the Commuted Sum will be discussed at the next Meeting to be held within the next few days. We now await confirmation of the outcome. 3) Councillor Barton attended the 'One Voice' Training Course for Module 13. There was no charge as it was covered by another Community Council in this instance. 8 County Councillor's Report - a copy of the following Report, was circulated prior to the Meeting and the points raised were read out by the Chairman. a) Good news, the swimming pool at the Ruthin Leisure Centre/ School has now reopened after an extensive upgrade. Although some remedial work had to be carried out as some of the tiles were found to be very slippy. b) Despite press and radio coverage we once again had traffic chaos at Loggerheads and Cadole with people breaking down fences, leaving large amounts of rubbish, parking in front of residents drives and parking illegally on the A494 Trunk Road. An Enforcement Officer did turn up on Saturday but when he called for police support no one was available. Due to the

Llanferres - Community Council

large numbers of people involved tickets were not issued. Councillor Holland visited the site on Saturday and found that the situation was the same on the Sunday. Councillor Holland believes that we have missed a golden opportunity to enforce the 'no parking' on the A494 and to help local residents. Councillor Holland has asked for a meeting with the Head of Service, the enforcement team and the police this week before it snows again. There were similar problems on the Forestry Road and around Moel Famau. Too many people are visiting the area when it snows. c) Councillor Holland has reported blocked gullies on the Maeshafn road and the resulting surface water in that area. This is near the Gwernymynydd Junction of the A494. d) Councillor Holland has taken pictures and reported the latest accidents on the Aberduna Quarry bends and asked for safety barriers. There was more police tape there again yesterday!! e) Councillor Holland has reported the damage to the grass triangle in Maeshafn after a large vehicle has mounted the verge there. f) At a meeting with highways last week Councillor Holland reported the thirty feet of road that has not been repaired by the Youth Hostel in Maeshafn. Flintshire resurfaced their section of the road but left this small section in a very poor condition. The ownership must be in dispute but Councillor Holland was amazed that both councils did not speak to one another and arrange for the work to be completed while they had contractors and equipment on site!! g) The 0710 bus service from Mold to Ruthin has been terminated. No one was using the bus and it will save 6300 bus miles a year. The 0745 bus is still running. h) Have you joined the Ysgol Bro Famau 100 club? This is a way of supporting the school even if you do not have children at the school.

i) Councillor Holland met with the leader of the council and the head of highways and his team to discuss the concerns about the state of roads in rural areas. Councillor Holland thanked those members who sent details of roads in their villages that need attention and these have been added to his list for highways. During the meeting, concerns were raised about gritting in our area and Councillor Holland took up an invitation to spend an evening out with a gritter lorry. It was educational and Councillor Holland now understands some of the issues DCC staff face when they are out and about. It also raised a number of other questions which have been submitted to the team. j) Councillor Holland opposed a suggestion to save £42k at a budget briefing by cutting yellow grit boxes and grit piles from rural areas. The suggestion by officers was withdrawn. k) Councillor Holland circulated the LDP walk in sessions for community Councillors which have now been held. The candidates sites will be circulated soon for public consultation and there are a number in the Llanferres area. These sites have been submitted by local land owners and will be considered as part of the next LDP process. l) A number of residents have raised concerns about the large earth works being undertaken near the Youth Hostel in Maeshafn and Councillor Holland has asked the county’s planning team to investigate. The Chairman thanked Cllr Holland for circulating another comprehensive Report. 9 Commenting on the Welsh Audit Report the Invoice for £381.00 A response had been received from the Audit Office in the form of an email as follows: 'We are required to charge for the time taken to complete the audit. Each year we undertake different work and therefore the time taken will differ. In 2017/18 we have seen an increase in the time taken to undertake the work required and subsequently the review process has required

19

Llanferres News & Views May/June 2019 more time. There was more documentation that took longer to review and complete the work required compared to the previous year. In 2016/17 it took 1.1 hours to complete the work in comparison to 3.2 in 2017/18. The review process also took longer with 0.30 hours in 2016/17 and 1.2 in 2017/18. The matter was discussed and it was Resolved: to pay the Invoice of £381.00 in full. 10 Reports from Other Meetings - Cllr Barton and the Clerk attended the 'Wellbeing of Future Generations' Workshop held by Denbighshire County Council in Bodelwyddan on 11th January. It was an excellent 'networking' event with presentations from Llysfaen Community Council and Llanfair Community Council on the Projects in their area for the good and betterment of their communities. Cllr Barton and the Clerk also attended the 'One Voice Wales' Area Meeting in Eirianfa Denbigh on the 16th January. The guest speaker was Judith Greenhalgh, the Chief Executive, who gave a presentation on the 'Challenges Facing Local Government in North Wales'. It was an informative presentation but unfortunately the documentation circulated did not contain the relevant graphs and data due to an administrative error. 11 Maintenance in the Community - the Millennium Fountain needs repair - not yet done. Tafarn-y-Gelyn Pond - now has a decent amount of water in it. It was confirmed that the lining of the pond is clay. The overflow of water from the road is filling it and the past problem of it drying up could have been caused by the very hot summer months experienced in 2018. 12 Planning Issues - none received 13 Risk Assessments Maes Ysgawen none raised. Maintenance Schedule has been received costing approx. £930 - £1196.00 for the year. Maeshafn - awaiting update for the Playing Field. Once the correct documentation is

20

received, Cllr Barton will submit the application for the 'Green Flag' Award. Maintenance Schedule has been received costing approx. £238.00 for the year. LLANFERRES BADMINTON CLUB The 2018/19 season is now over and the club has had its best year ever, with great league finishes for all teams and an ever-growing membership.

CLUB'S MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASON EVER Our most successful team was the C Team, which, after several seasons languishing along the bottom of Division 3, has this year fought hard and consistently performed well to achieve an end of season 2nd place with guaranteed promotion into Division 2. The last few weeks of the season were real nail biters with the Cs having done all they could and everything hinging on a final match between Mold C & Flint C. It all turned out well in the end and for the first time ever the club will have a Division 1 team and 2 Division 2 teams. Our B team finished the season in a solid 6th place in Division 2 after an uncertain start to the season but a strong second half. The As finished 5th in Division 1 despite having an average age well above most of the competition.

AWARDS EVENING To celebrate such a successful season the Club held an awards evening at the Druid with champagne & canapes in true Oscar style followed by the presentation of awards, some serious and some just for fun. Bryn Hyfryd School have provided more opportunities for practice and social badminton.

Award winners from left to right: Tony, Sue Clarke, Andy Purshouse, Lara Griffiths, Hazel Hislop - Captain of Team of the Year - the Cs, Andy Tustain, Carys Jones, Figo, Jane Givelin - Player of the Year, Andy Swash, Sarah Jones, Wendy Swash - Most Improved Player of the Year

SUMMER CLUB The season has now finished, and the senior summer club is Carys Jones winner of a running from 23 April until the last week in May with play on Special Achievement Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7.30 - 9.30 pm. After Whitson Award and Most there will be an informal club night which offers a great Enthusiastic Player, opportunity for new players and badminton returners to dust receiving her award from down their rackets and play in a fun informal way. Juniors club secretary Claire Halestrap start after Easter on 2 May. For more information about joining the senior or junior club contact Claire Halestrap clairehalestrap@harrisondd.co.uk

A note from your County Councillor I am writing this article in beautiful sunshine and as the Easter temperatures rise towards the mid twenties. No, I am not in the South of France or on the Costa Del Sol but at home in Llanarmon Yn Ial. We have had one of the driest Februaries and Marches on record and there have been very few April showers to date. If this weather continues we could be facing a long hot dry summer which is great for the sun seekers but not good news for the farmers or the gardeners amongst us. On the 28th March the County held its public review of the Llantysilio Fire, the causes, the responses from the emergency services and the lessons learnt. The fire destroyed over six hundred acres of moorland and burnt for nearly eight weeks. The fire had a big impact on local businesses, graziers, tourism, the environment and wildlife but the good news is that the Black Grouse seem to have survived in reasonable numbers. The meeting was open and frank and no one came out of the review with glowing colours but the key thing was to ensure that we are prepared for any similar fires in the future and that we deal with them quickly. There were many issues raised but I had concerns about the maintenance of fire-hydrants in rural

28

areas, creating a list of all water supplies including lakes and reservoirs for future emergency use and that land owners and responsible bodies such as NRW create enough fire breaks as part of our on going moor land maintenance. Latterly I have also asked that communication systems are also covered in the final paper because in our ward alone we have mobile phone masts, police telecommunications installations and TV and Radio booster stations all of which are situated on our high open moorland . If we were to lose any of these in a fire it would have a massive impact on everyone. A full report of the recommendations will be published by June this year but I have asked that there is a plan in place asap. We all have to be vigilant and a recent small fire in the Clwydian range near Moel Famau was quickly put out by our Countryside Services staff. The season for maintaining the moorland through controlled burning is now over and so any fires should be reported immediately using 999. As you will have all seen there have been a number of improvements to on the A494 through the village of Llanferres with the installation of dropped kerbs etc. Because the A494 is a Trunk Road which is managed and financed by Welsh Government, we had no notice of the planned changes or say in how the money was spent. Although any improvements are always welcome, two years on, we are still waiting for the promised flashing speed signs in Loggerheads

Llanferres News & Views May/June 2019

A note from your County Councillor and the pelican crossing from the Colomendy School to the Country Park. To date they have only moved the 40mph limit towards Tafarn y Gelyn and pruned some of the hedges around the Llanarmon Yn Ial junctions. I have asked our AM Darren Miller to chase the minister again and to remind him of his commitments to the residents, visitors and businesses in and around Loggerheads. National Government have opened a consultation with local County Councils offering considerable amounts of money to any community/authority who would consider being a site for a deep underground nuclear waste facility. As your County Councillor I spoke against this proposal on the grounds that this area has been mined and quarried for centuries, that the Clwydian Range has pockets of Radon Gas which I believe could be disturbed by any deep excavation work and that because much of the County forms part of the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. I hope that the stance I have taken on this occasion has your support. I hope that the surface water issues in Tyn Llan will be resolved soon. Sadly the roots of tree in the corner of the school yard have been identified as the main culprit and the tree will have to come down. The invading roots will then be cut from the pipe that runs along the school field and down the rear of the properties in Tyn Llan and Cae Derwen. The roots have been causing a blockage in the pipe and the water has then backed up and flowed down Tyn Llan.

We have recently had a very productive meeting between the village hall committee, the school and the education authority. The object of the meeting was to discuss the process for dealing with minor and major repairs to the hall and to prepare the ground for renewing the lease in 2021. All minor repairs are now funded through the school budget but there was some good news from the county who are planning to look at the roof and the windows in the hall as part of their planned school improvements in 2020. There is always a health warning when looking at the planned education budget. The budget can often be affected by unforeseen demands for school maintenance emergencies elsewhere and through cuts in Welsh Government funding. We are now firmly in the lambing season and already we have had isolated reports of dogs worrying sheep. Can I just remind everyone to follow the country code and keep dogs on the lead when crossing local farm land. This Easter I am joining Community Councillor Allan Morgans on a walk through the Big Covert. I will be checking for any further developments in the woods and on reports of large scale felling of trees. Most tree felling requires a licence via NRW and any buildings in the wood require planning permission. It is good to remind everyone that after an appeal the Welsh Government

Llanferres News & Views May/June 2019

A note from your County Councillor Inspectorate have said that there should be no sheds or similar developments in the Big Covert. Oops, I have a small apology to make. In the last copy of News and Views I thanked the Pensioners Club for inviting my mother and I to the annual Christmas Dinner held at the Druids. On this occasion I should have thanked the Llanferres Older Persons Welfare Committee who do all the sterling work in arranging this particular event. My apologies and I am very pleased to take this opportunity to thank them all again for all the work they do in the village. I had a minor operation recently which I am pleased to confirm was a complete success although I must admit it took me longer to get over the anaesthetic than I had expected. I would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes.

I would also like to wish Hugo Watts a speedy recovery after his recent road accident. It comes to something when you get out of your car to help others and end up in hospital yourself!! We all hope to see Hugo back on his feet as soon as possible. Finally, I hope that by the time you have read this copy of the News and Views you will all have had a great Easter break and that you will be looking forward to a good summer. Best wishes, Martyn Cyng / Cllr Martyn Holland Tel: 01824 780703 Email : martyn.holland@denbighshire.gov.uk

Llanferres News & Views May/June 2019 Since my last update, the RENEW team have joined forces with colleagues of another local refugee support group called RAVEN (Refugee and Volunteer Empowerment Network). Members of this group have direct experience of volunteering at various locations across Europe that have been affected by the refugee crisis. They focus on identifying volunteering opportunities both at home and abroad and then sharing this information by hosting regular networking events for people who would like to volunteer or help in other ways. With a huge amount of help from local musician Penni Neale, we organised two fundraising concerts during March, under the theme of 'Music Makes a Difference'. Both events sold out quickly and they were evenings full of music, love and empathy for refugees from war-torn countries, who are currently stuck on the small Greek island of Leros, where they wait until their asylum applications are processed.

All our performers gave their time free of charge, and one of our musicians Alan Thompson, having heard the story behind our campaign, was inspired to put pen to paper himself to compose an amazing song for us, which he performed for us at our second concert. You can listen to 'Only Human' by searching for 'Alan Thompson Only Human' on YouTube or by using this link https://youtu.be/PiClbfNxizI As a result of these two concerts, we were able to send over £3000.00 to ECHO 100 in Leros who ordered an initial 40 buggies from Athens. On 4th April, these were distributed to families with children under 4 years old living at the Hotspot camp, at PIPKA and at the ARSIS accommodations. The remaining money will be used to purchase more buggies for the next intake of refugee families. The pictures say it all……………

The Two Tomens of Ial A tomen is a medieval earthwork - a fortified mound (a motte) surrounded by a deep ditch together with an adjacent enclosed area known as a bailey. In our vicinity there are two examples: Tomen y Rhodwydd near Llandegla and Tomen y Faerdre at Llanarmon. At both these sites a wooden castle was constructed on the top of the mound. Both tomens have recently received attention under the north east Wales Community Archaeology Programme. This is conducted by the Clwyd Powys Archaeology Trust supported by Cadw, Denbighshire County Council, several universities and a host of volunteers.

began on the removal of intrusive vegetation but further work needs doing, probably in the autumn. Once again the site is on private land but it can be viewed from the public road to the north and west and from the adjacent bridleway to the east.

The precise history of the two tomens is unclear as surviving records do not distinguish between them. We know that Owain Gwynedd raised a castle in 1149 during his conquest of northern Powys. This castle was burnt in 1157 by Iorwerth Goch ap Maredudd. It was later rebuilt and occupied by King John in 1212 during his campaign against Llewellyn the Great. There is a reference in the Pipe Rolls for 1212-3 Tomen y Rhodwydd is a particularly fine to "iron mallets for breaking the rocks in example of a motte and bailey. This motte is the larger of the two with a summit approximately 30m in diameter and 7m above the surrounding land. The motte was defended by a rock outcrop to the west and a ditch around the remaining sides. There are apparently no remaining traces of a bailey. In March this year work

Llanferres News & Views May/June 2019 At the time of writing, 3rd April we have minus one and heavy snow. I've just been out with meal worms for the birds, which judging by the number who came to greet me, they were very welcome. For two weeks in February we had twenty degrees and sunshine. Butterflies and bumblebees came out of hibernation and were looking for flowers. Frogs were in the pond and I was listening to song thrushes and watching lapwings dive about in display. We had a good show of primroses followed by wild garlic and I am now waiting for the bluebells. These have all come from seed collected locally and dried in paper bags then raked into the top inch of the ground. To see them in flower gives me a good sense of achievement.

discarded machinery. For this reason it was always A Walk referred to as "the on the construction field" to us children it was "the Wilde side struckie". Hawthorn bushes and many varieties of wild flowers had taken over and it was a wonderful place to go bird watching, with linnets, yellow hammers and skylarks. It even had its resident covey of partridges and many rabbits, which gave the dog a good run. The tall boundary hedge was full of tree sparrows. We would often camp and spend long evenings roasting potatoes on the fire. On a visit to Bebington last year, I decided to go for a drive around my old haunts. I wish I had never bothered as they are all gone under concrete and houses or under industrial units. Some places I couldn't recognise and had a job to find my way out of.

Pat and Dave from Gwernymyndd both keen walkers and photographers have again given me some excellent photographs of birds taken in their garden. I was glad to see that the linnet was amongst them, as although only a mile away the linnet is a very Keep an ear out for the cuckoo the first rare visitor to my garden. week in May. Once a popular cage bird the linnet's eggs were often taken to be hatched under captive bred birds or canaries. This practice is now illegal and although not stamped out altogether, it is thankfully frowned upon and not acceptable.

More next time. Eddie Edie Wilde 01352 810271

Most finches will move about and feed in mixed flocks, with siskins and redpolls preferring treetops and linnets favouring waste ground with bushes and hedgerows. The best place for linnets when I was a boy in Bromborough was a patch of ground which had been used for some sort of building work many years before and had the remains of a railway track and in places
