Llanferres News & Views March/April 2019

Welcome Welcome to the March & April issue. As we go to print we are enjoying some really lovely very early spring sunshine and the daffodils are just starting to come out. Let’s hope we don't have a 'beast' visit us this year! We started the year with very sad news. Heartfelt condolences go to Steve Clarke and also to the O'Garra family, following the loss of Jane and Sally. On a more positve note, welcome to Ann and Vic and welcome back to Mal! Start work now on your Easter Bonnet for the Bingo Night on 12th April (see pg19) and brush up on your general knowledge for the Druid Quiz nights on 12th March and 9th April (see pg 27). Proceeds from the quiz nights are kindly donated to News & Views so please do support. There is a lot of very strong feeling currently about dog fouling (see pg 5). Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan Email: news@llanferres.org

Llanferres News & Views March/April 2019

You are an absolute disgrace To those dog owners who do not 'bag and bin' your pet's mess - you are an absolute disgrace and we wished you didn't live in our village.

It appears that the guilty parties' disgraceful behaviour has been observed on a number of occasions ‌ people are aware of your names and where you live.

The school report that someone is walking their dog in the school and leaving poo on the grass right in front of the children's play area - how disgusting is that? School staff have to clear this away.

So, if you are the man walking your dog late at night with never a poo bag to be seen, or one of the 2 teenagers seen leaving your dog's mess (your parents always clean up when they walk your dog), be warned.

There are reports of dog poo on the pavement on Tyn Llan, on the lawn at the entrance to Cae Gwyn and on the grass by the Memorial stone - how disrespectful is that? The responsible dog owners who walk their dogs in Maes Ysgawen are fed up with the small number of you who walk away and leave your dog's mess in our community field - how lazy is that?

Villagers are sick to death of this issue and how it blights our lovely village. Enough is enough. People are now watching, noting, recording and reporting. If you don't want your and your pet's picture 'caught in action' printed in News & Views and reported to Denbighshire County Council then 'bag it and bin it'.

Church News Open the Book We had a problem with the snowy weather at the beginning of the month, but we were welcomed back to tell the story of 'Daniel in the Lion's Den.' Once again, the method acting shone amongst the pupils at Llanarmon and Llanferres, especially those who played the parts of the lions!

Churchyard Following all of Hugo and Ieuan's hard work, we are now in a position to plant more trees. Would you like to plant a tree in remembrance of a loved one by sponsoring a tree? There are almost 50 trees approved by the Woodland Trust that would be suitable for the churchyard and would enhance the beauty and ecology of the churchyard. Please contact Gay Headley (810224) for further details.

Outward Giving We have a box for donations to the Flintshire Food Bank at the back of the church. Last year it filled sufficiently for us to make five donations to the Food Bank. We will be making a financial donation from the collection at the Harvest Evensong next time we visit to donate. We have made a donation of ÂŁ125 to the British Legion from the collection on Armistice Sunday.

Lent There will be two Lent Groups meeting in Mold Mission Area this year. Starting on Wednesday 13th March, the afternoon groups will meet at 2pm at St Mary's, Cilcain and the evening groups at Christ Church, Pontblyddyn will start at 7.00pm. There is scope for continuing the groups beyond Easter to Ascension Day (30th May) and Pentecost (9th June). We will be guided through Bible readings, reflections and prayer, and we will be encouraged to reflect on the themes of generosity and inheritance. All are welcome. Please contact Kathy Stewart kathy12oct@sky.com 07500936985 or John Foxlee johnfoxlee44@gmail.com 01352810677

Following a successful campaign last year, Ecclesiastical Insurance have extended their Trust 130 initiative for a There will be a Mothering Sunday further year. Church News Compline services during Holy week as in previous years (details to be arranged). As Mothering Sunday falls this year on a Fifth Sunday, we have decided to have Mothering Sunday Services in all five churches, and hold our joint service on the Fourth Sunday of March at Gwernaffield Church.

Wellfield Housing Project Llanferres Church has been pleased to support the Wellfield Housing Project, which has finally achieved charitable status. It is a fantastic initiative to give temporary housing to four homeless men in the Flintshire area, and it is situated in Northop Hall. Many people have given of their time, money and effort and the scheme should be coming to fruition very soon. The organisers of the Wellfield Project, who include our curate, Kathy, are holding a 'thank you' celebration on 24th February at 3 pm at Northop Hall Church Hall. All who are interested in the scheme are very welcome to meet, eat cake and have a tour of the project.

Messy Church We started the year in January when we heard about the story of 'Jacob's Ladder'. We will continue the theme of 'God's Promises' with the story of Abraham in February (17th) and Moses in March(17th). We have been joined by more volunteer helpers (thank you!) and we have room for more Messy Churchgoers! Please come along to Gwernaffield Church Hall at 4.00 pm to join in the fun. We have crafts, games, worship, food and mess! All accompanied children are warmly welcomed.

Our Easter Messy Church will take place on the Second Sunday (14th April, Palm Sunday) instead of the usual Third Sunday, which will be Easter Sunday this year. There is also a Messy Church taking place in the Mold Area every half term and school holidays. The next Mold Messy Church will take place at St Mary's Mold on 25th April. 11am-1pm.

Congregational Meeting Our Congregational Meeting will be on Tuesday 26th March at 7.30 pm, with a short preceding meeting at 7.15 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Future Events We discussed the possibility of having some outdoor services later in the year, possibly on Moel Famau or at Fairy Glen. Daniel is keen as well to have some discussion evenings in pubs local to our five churches. Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcomed.

Thank you To everyone who has worked to keep the church clean over the past year, particularly to Anne Woodward. We are planning a ‘summer clean’ later in the year and all volunteers would be welcomed with open arms!

Llanferres Gardening Club The gardening club meeting on 11th February was devoted to the planning of the 45th Annual Show which will take place on 7th September this year. As usual, there will be a wide variety of classes available which will hopefully give everyone a chance to enter. The show is not just about growing things but allows participants to exhibit their skills in photography, baking, handicrafts etc. While the main gardening classes have only minor changes, the home section has been altered significantly and, as usual, there will be new classes for floral art, photography and handicrafts. If you have any ideas of classes that you would like to see included or any other ways of enhancing the show, we would love to hear them.

Do You use the Llanferres Park ? Do you want it to continue ? I have been Chairman for the last ~10 years and will stand down at the end of April. Wayne has been treasurer for 4 years and also plans to stand down at the end of April. Currently there isn’t a replacement for either post and nobody has come forward. The current situation is that the LPFRA has been extremely successful over the last 20+ years, but this success is proving difficult to maintain due to a lack of volunteers to become Officers and Committee Members and to dedicate time to help running the organisation. We have a great attendance at the working party but there is more needed to run the park. LPFRA requires a minimum 12 members (9 plus 3 officers) to continue as a charity.

LPFRA held a meeting with Members of the Llanferres Community Council and the wider community on 16 October 2018 to discuss concerns and share ideas on how to ensure that the park continues to be maintained and operates to the highest of standards. All attendees were in agreement that it would be a great shame if the park had to close its gates and everyone was in agreement that we need to come up with a solution that works for all parties involved. Please can you let me know if you are able to help. AGM to be held 15th May. Thanks, Dan 810461 17

Cyngor y Cymuned - Llanferres Minutes of the GENERAL MEETING Held Thursday 13th DECEMBER 2018 Present: Cllr. John Almond (Chair), Cllrs Bob Barton, Michael Cordiner, Rob Jones, Ivy Watts, Isla Watts, Allan Morgans, Cllr Martyn Holland and the Clerk, Mrs. G Dillon. There were members of the public present. 1

Apologies: Cllr Amanda Curtis, Cllr Jac Armstrong

2

Meeting Open to the Public - no items raised.

3 Declarations of Interest - the Councillors were reminded that they should declare an interest at the commencement of the Meeting, or as soon as the Councillor affected becomes aware that they have a personal or personal and prejudicial interest in today's business. Any members declaring an interest are required to state clearly what that interest is. 4 Declarations of Interest - Cllrs Isla and Ivy Watts declared an interest in Item 9 Maintenance in the Community - Maes Ysgawen and Item 14 Bills for Payment. Being a close relative to the contractor involved. 5 Minutes of the General Meeting held on 8th November 2018 - these were accepted and signed by the Chairman as being a correct record. 6 Matters Arising - 1) There are no Zig, Zag lines outside the school as yet. Being pursued with Cllr Holland. 2) The Commuted Sum is being applied for. 7 County Councillor's Report - a copy of the following Report, was circulated prior to the Meeting and the points raised were read out by the Chairman. 1) There will be bridge repair works at Pont Cyfnant on the B5430 in January involving

20

December

traffic lights. (Already circulated via the road works bulletin). 2) Some residents in Tafarn Y Gelyn have now received Ultra Broad Band which is great news. Cllr Holland has asked the counties Broad Band Officer to investigate to see where else this is now available. 3) The Welsh Governments Child Care package will be available in Denbighshire as from the 7th January 2019. Residents can apply on line. 4) Cllr Holland is campaigning across the ward to get people to register for affordable housing if they want to get on the housing ladder. This is particularly important for first time buyers and those who want to rent/buy. There is no one currently registered for Llanferres. 5) After enlisting the help of our Assembly member Darren Miller Cllr Holland received a copy of a further letter from Ken Skates about the promised Loggerheads traffic calming measures. If you recall these improvements were agreed back in September 2016 and promised by the end of the then financial year in April 2017. The plans were to extend the 40mph limit towards Tafarn Y Gelyn, install speed limit flashing signs and a replacement crossing outside the gates of the Colomendy School. The letter confirmed that most of the work will start soon but Mr. Skates has had second thoughts about the crossing because it is outside a private school!! Colomendy School may be run by a private company but most of the children visiting the school still come from local authorities on Merseyside and "all" children need to cross this busy road in safety. I hope that he will have a change of heart about the crossing. You may have noticed that some works have already begun but it appears that the police are also now checking traffic speeds in the area and tapes have been placed across the road in two places. 6) When Cllr Holland visited the school recently it was noticed that, once again water was pouring down Tyn Llan and it had obviously pooled "again" by the entrance to Cae Derwen.

Llanferres News & Views March/April 2019

Meeting

Llanferres - Community Council

This has been investigated in the past and we know that the problem involves tree roots in the drainage pipe that runs alongside the school playing field. Cllr Holland raised this as an issue again because of the concerns that the council bungalows at the bottom of Tyn Llan could end up being flooded if we have extreme heavy rain. This is now being investigated to try and resolve this problem once and for all. 7) Cllr Holland raised your concerns about the new internal school fence and the impact on disabled pupils and adults. It appears that there is no right of way through the school grounds only access to the village hall. The fence has improved the safety of children during school hours. LLANFERRES BADMINTON CLUB Llanferres Badminton club is nearing the end of a very successful 2018/19 season. With 3 senior teams, one in each of the League’s 3 Divisions and 2 junior teams, the club continues to offer members the opportunity for competitive play alongside great social badminton.

JUNIORS

The junior club caters for children from 7 to 15 and offers weekly coaching, the opportunity to learn to play games and for those who want it, competitive play in the North East Wales Junior League.

Junior club members with Coach Jane Givelin

Thanks to some great performances from the junior A team, they have now gained promotion to the 2nd Division whilst the B team largely made up of players new to badminton this season are doing great in Division 5.

SENIORS This season has seen possibly the best overall performance of the club’s 3 teams. The A team are currently 5th in Division 1, B team 7th in Division 2 and the C team, otherwise known as the ‘Dream Team’ are 3rd in Division 3 and looking a strong possibility for promotion at the end of the season. We now have courts on a Tuesday evening for matches which has meant the Thursday club nights at Bryn Hyfryd School have provided more opportunities for practice and social badminton.

Senior Club members enjoying an evening of social badminton

As well as playing for the club, some members compete in local and national tournaments. Club super star Carys Jones is having much success in junior tournaments in Wales and further afield. Senior players Hazel Hislop, Wendy Swash & Andy Swash brought home the silverware in in a recent North East Wales tournament and Jane Givelin and Dave Markey enjoyed some great wins at the Welsh National Masters tournament in Cardiff. A note from your County Councillor I would like to wish everyone a belated happy new year. Christmas and the New Year now seem a long time ago and the year is already flying by or is it that I am just getting older!! Despite the press releases and radio interviews, we once again had traffic chaos around Loggerheads and Cadole with people breaking down fences, leaving large amounts of rubbish, parking in front of residents drives and parking illegally on the A494 Trunk Road. An enforcement officer did turn up on the Saturday but when he called for police back up no one was available and because of the large number of people in the area tickets were not issued!! I visited the area on the Saturday and I know that the situation was the same on the Sunday. I believe that we have missed a golden opportunity to enforce no parking on the A494 and to help local residents at the same time. In my opinion the officers should have been there first thing in the morning before the masses arrived and when it would have been easier to ticket parked cars. We are now looking at ways to make the area less attractive for sledging and parking on the trunk road and I will keep you posted via News and Views. There were similar volumes of visitors and traffic congestion around the Moel Famau Country Park and I feel it is just

a case of to many people visiting the area when it snows. The new yellow zig zag lines have now been installed outside the school for the safety of the children. Can I remind everyone that you are not supposed to park on them!! I have reported the blocked gullies on the Maeshafn road which have now been cleaned and the latest accidents on the bends by the old Aberduna Quarry. We need either barriers or better signage as you head down through the bends towards the A494. The 0710 bus service from Mold to Ruthin has been cancelled. No one was using this early service and by terminating the service it will save 6300 bus miles a year. The 0745 bus is still running. I met with the Leader of the Council and senior highways staff to discuss the poor state of some of our rural roads. On my list were the B5430, the lane to Bryn Alyn, the ten metres of road in front of the old Youth Hostel in Maeshafn and a number of roads in the Llandegla area. Pot holes and gritting were also discussed. As a result of my concerns about the gritting lorry routes and what appeared to be intermittent gritting, I was offered the chance to go out on an evening gritting run which I did. It was good to understand both sides of the story and to see what the drivers encountered on their routes, badly parked cars being a major obstacle. I still feel that we could make better use of technology to ensure the gritting is

A note from your County Councillor continuous and I have asked to go out again when there is a heavy snow fall and the ploughs are in use.

pounds but we had to take the difficult decision of raising council tax by 6.35% to make up the difference.

The next LDP (Local Development Plan) is now being formulated and drop in sessions for Community Councillors have been held to discuss the county’s options for housing and business park development. The County wanted to understand if people would like to see housing spread evenly across all our communities or for the majority of houses etc to be built in key areas.

In the last six years we have reduced the County’s annual expenditure by thirty four million pounds and with an ageing population more money is needed to help support our older citizens stay in their homes longer. The County is also facing an increasing number of children who are coming into our care and to fund twenty four hour care is extremely costly.

The next stage will be to discuss the land put forward for development by individual land owners and this will involve a public consultation. There are a number of sites in the Llanferres Community Council area and as your County Councillor I would like to hold a drop in session in Llanferres when the consultation begins.

Until the Welsh Government recognise local governments key role in providing local services and funds us accordingly, I fear that we will be looking at severe cuts in services in the future or further council tax rises. Both of which I find unpalatable.

For the last six months the County have held a number of budget sessions where we looked at all the options available to us. Sadly although we eventually received a flat settlement from the Welsh Government (in other words not increase in funding) this has meant that with commitments already in the pipeline such as the annual staff pay award, teachers pensions, additional funding for adult and child care and an increase in funding for the such things as the Fire Service we were still looking at a shortfall. We needed a 5% increase in funding from Welsh Government to meet these additional costs. We have made further savings of approximately three and a half million

I look forward to seeing you at the LDP consultation meeting. Best wishes, Martyn Cyng / Cllr Martyn Holland Tel: 01824 780703 Email : martyn.holland@denbighshire.gov.uk

A Walk

During the cold spell we had at the end of January and early February, we had some interesting visitors to the bird table. Whilst I was being surrounded by robins, who had come for the live meal worms, a single long tailed tit took a meal worm from my hand. Usually in a small flock, the fact that it was on its own was unusual , but to get one coming that close it had to be really hungry.

where they mix with redshanks and oysteron the catchers, feeding as the cattle disturb the ground. Then along the shoreline as the tide goes out.

There has been a good sized flock of redpolls doing the rounds mixed with the siskins. The redpoll prefers birch woodland and can be well hidden in the tree tops, then swoop down and disappear as they land on rough ground in their search for seeds. Smaller than the goldfinch it is a very handsome bird with its little red skull cap and dark tail. They will mix with linnets and they are continually on the move.

I have enjoyed a good show of snowdrops and was looking for early primroses when a goldcrest (Britain's smallest bird) caught my eye in a Scots pine, knowing there would be two of them, I moved a bit closer and sure enough there were two probing every crack and crevice looking for tiny eggs and insects, totally oblivious to me standing just a yard away.

Wilde side

Another handsome winter visitor is the brambling, they will mix with flocks of chaffinches as they go about their ever searching for food. By April they have gone to their native forests in Northern Europe where they will have one brood in May and June.

During the winter months, providing it is not too cold I have been repairing and making a few bird boxes. Some friends have shown interest and asked if I would make them a box. The fact that they want to put a box up is good and for a donation to the "Dog Trust" I have made them a nest box.
