Comprehensive Pre-College Music Education in the Heart of NYC’s Greenwich Village

More than a conservatory— a dynamic creative community

At The New School’s Mannes Prep, young musicians flourish together in a welcoming musical environment. Our nurturing educators create a personalized learning path of one-on-one lessons, large-ensemble performance, music theory and ear training classes, and electives that takes emerging talent to the next level in ways no other program can. Inspired by the power of music to spark personal and creative growth, the Mannes community dedicates itself to helping students develop a lifelong love of music. Mannes Prep draws on the benefits of its celebrated home—Mannes School of Music—with its hundred-year history of cultivating talent, innovation, and creative community.

At Mannes Prep, young artists discover new paths to creative and personal growth. Our Unique Approach

Our Faculty

Our rigorous course of study, designed as a full school year (fall and spring terms), is built on three elements:

Our distinguished musician-educators include members of the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and JACK Quartet.

• Private lessons with our world-class faculty • Theory classes and ear training at Mannes’ state-of-the-art facilities • Performance opportunities in our orchestras, choruses, and smaller ensembles Students also have the opportunity to pursue exciting electives in subjects such as film scoring, electronic music, conducting, chamber music, composition, music history, jazz ensemble, and world music. Mannes Prep students and ensembles recently performed in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Lincoln Center, and Steinway Hall. All students in our community, from four-year-old beginners to high schoolers, audition, so that Mannes Prep’s education experts can get to know them and tailor their musical studies.

Guest artists have included Esperanza Spalding, Kaija Saariaho, Caroline Shaw, and Missy Mazzoli. Learn more about our faculty at newschool.edu/mannes/prep-faculty.

Our Alumni At Mannes Prep, students gain confidence and skills that serve them as they apply to college, pursue their studies, and build their careers. In addition to its programs at Mannes Prep, Open Campus offers art and design courses at Parsons School of Design and writing workshops at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. opencampus.newschool.edu Mannes School of Music In 1916, David and Clara Mannes—two exceptional musical leaders with revolutionary ideas about how and why music should be taught—established a community music school bearing their name. Their ultimate goal was to nurture a love of music. Their son, a gifted pianist (and an inventor of Kodachrome film), expanded the school into a world-class college conservatory. Today, as part of The New School, Mannes continues to evolve, reflecting the changing musical landscape of the 21st century. The founders’ belief in the power of music to improve people’s lives remains the school’s guiding principle.
