ALTERNATIVE UNKNOWNS studio - fall 2016 - by Juliana Chohfi & Valentina Branada
DISCOVERY
Years after a disaster there are still emotional effects on people. Lack of access for low income population to psychological help. Psychological aspects are not a priority in designing for disaster.
(Hurricane Sandy, NYC)
OPPORTUNITY: Design for coping and provide psychological support. People that already went through a similar disaster reacted better and helped others. (Tsunami, Chile) OPPORTUNITY: Leverage previous disaster learnings to help prepare for the next ones. Rituals serve to lift stigma, guilt or blame, symbolically cleansing people and places and allow them to return to full participation in day-to-day life. (Sandy Hook mass shooting)
OPPORTUNITY: Use memorializing and reflection as a healing process.
DISCOVERY
OPPORTUNITY: Shelters open a space for greater impact since they gather people affected by the disaster and there is a lot of idle time. Shelters are a difficult environment where people don’t know each other and there is lack of trust. (Red Cross, Katrina)
OPPORTUNITY: Create possibilities for connection and build community within the shelter.
IDEATION Connect donors to the person in need and promote contributions. Message of support and empathy that generates a broader sense of community.
