Honoring Veterans Day By Col. Leslie L. Megyeri

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served our nation. The holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service. It was originally called Armistice Day and fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all veterans of all wars. Each year, I commemorate Veterans Day at a different veterans’ cemetery. I have written about my previous visits for Lifestyles. Last year, I went to the Sarasota National Cemetery, and the previous year, I went to Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC. This year, I will visit the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA, which was created for Union casualties from the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War, fought between July 1 and 3, 1863, and which resulted in the largest number of casualties of any Civil War battle. It was also considered the war’s turning point, leading ultimately to Union victory. Originally called Soldiers’ National Cemetery, the 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address at the cemetery’s consecration on Nov. 19, 1863. That day is observed annually in town and at the cemetery with a parade, procession and memorial ceremonies by thousands of Civil War re-enactors, both of the Union Army and the Confederate States

Army. The cemetery contains 3,512 interments, including the graves of 979 unknown soldiers and the remains of American soldiers and dependents from the Civil War to the Vietnam War. Monuments, memorials and markers are scattered throughout and its stone walls, iron fences and gates, brick sidewalks and section markers make this the most visited site in the area. The centerpiece is the Soldiers’ National Monument, a 60-foot-tall granite shrine surrounded by a concentric semicircle of graves. President Dwight Eisenhower was a dignitary in the Remembrance Day activities at the cemetery in 1963, and his retirement home is adjacent to the battlefield. You may wonder why I visit a different national cemetery each Veterans’ Day. It’s because I saw firsthand too many whose remains were returned from the Vietnam War and whose service was not fully recognized. In some small way, I hope my gravesite visits will set an example for others to perhaps do the same or at least take a moment to say “thank you.” Col. Megyeri lives part-time in Venice, FL, and is a retired attorney and CPA. He recommends that if readers visit Gettysburg, they also see the newly opened World War II Museum, the Eisenhower Home and the Wills House, the home of attorney David Wills which was the center of the immense clean-up process after the Battle of Gettysburg and where plans were made for a Soldiers’ National Cemetery.

What Women Need to Know About Stroke Risks From Family Features It may not be widely known that women face unique risk factors for stroke throughout their lifetime. Things like pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and chronic stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke. Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke. However, a large majority of strokes can be prevented. Start managing your stroke risk with these tips from the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association: Monitor Your Blood Pressure The first step you can take in reducing your risk for stroke is knowing your blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range. High blood pressure is the No. 1 preventable cause of stroke, according to the American Heart Association. The best way to know your blood pressure is to have it measured at least once per year by a health care professional and regularly monitor it at home then discuss the numbers with a doctor. For most people, a normal blood pressure should be 120/80 mm HG or less. In addition to properly monitoring blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, eating healthfully and reducing or eliminating alcohol and tobacco usage can help control blood pressure. If you do develop high blood pressure, work with a health care professional on a plan to help manage it. Learn the Warning Signs •

A stroke can happen to anyone at any point in life. Immediate treatment may help minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death. Learn how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T:

Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?

•

Arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

•

Speech difficulty: Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like “The sky is blue.”

•

Time to call 911: If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get to a hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.

New Orleans-Style Oyster Dressing If you’re looking for a new side dish to serve up this Thanksgiving, this stuffing recipe is the one for you!

Ingredients: • 1 loaf (24-inches long) French bread • 1 ½ sticks (12 tablespoons) butter, divided • 1 cup chopped onions • ½ cup chopped celery • ½ cup green bell pepper • 2 garlic cloves minced • 1-pint fresh oysters, juice reserved, 1.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cut the bread into cubes. Spread them on an even layer on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes until the bread is toasted but not yet brown. Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool. Do not turn the oven off.

Add the cubed bread to the pot. Stir to coat the bread with any juices in the pot. The bread should be moist but still keep its shape, not soggy. Use the reserved juice from the oysters if necessary. Add a little bit of the chicken broth if you don’t have enough oyster juice.

Urin ary I ssu e s in Cats By Sarah H ilar i o, DVM Many pet owners bring their feline friends to the veterinary hospital for examination due to the common symptom of urinating outside the litter box. Other signs that cats may also show include straining to urinate, a blood tinge to the urine, excessive grooming around the urinary area, or even crying out when urinating. The first thought that comes to most people’s mind is usually a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, UTI’s are actually somewhat uncommon in cats under 10 years of age. Bladder stones, tumors, obstructions of the urinary tract, and any type of inflammation can also cause a cat to urinate inappropriately. Some cats may be exhibiting behavioral problems as well. The first step that veterinarians will usually perform, after a history and physical examination, is a urinalysis. This test can screen for UTIs, early renal disease, diabetes, and inflammation of the bladder. An abdominal x-ray may also be taken to look for bladder or kidney stones. When extensive testing has been performed and a specific cause cannot be determined, these cats may have a condition called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease or FLUTD. Unfortunately, there is no specific test or cure for this disease yet. Some cat’s symptoms will completely resolve after five to ten days without any specific treatment. However, recurrence is very common. Long term treatment includes decreasing stress in the household, providing

extra litter boxes, increasing water intake, and giving oral medications. The treatment for cats with specific urinary issues depends on the cause. Cats with UTI’s are typically given antibiotics. Bladder stones are sometimes dissolvable with prescription diets, other stones need to be removed surgically. Obstructions of the urinary tract are more common in male cats. These typically require a urinary catheter and several days in the hospital. It is important to remember that most of these conditions are not life threatening except for a blockage. In a male cat that is having urinary symptoms, they need to be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Urinary issues can be frustrating but with the proper tests and treatment they are very manageable.

Baby Boomers now in their 50’s and 60’s and beyond may be unpleasantly surprised to learn that their “youthful indiscretions” may follow them even into their golden years. Baby Boomers hoping to downsize are sometimes shocked to find that they have been denied an apartment lease because of that unfortunate drug possession arrest from their college partying days forty years earlier. Or perhaps they are denied that part-time cashier’s job at the corner hardware store desperately needed to supplement meager retirement savings because of that long forgotten shoplifting charge incurred as a teenager. A criminal record can even result in higher auto insurance premiums and higher interest payments on consumer loans, often without the person even knowing they are being singled out to pay more. Despite the fact that one’s criminal record may be very old and even if the charges were dropped or a formal adjudication of guilt withheld, the criminal charge remains a public record for one’s lifetime. In part due to the present economy, landlords, employers, insurance companies, credit card companies and banks, to name a few, are ferreting out and scrutinizing unflattering public information now more than ever.

Florida law permits an individual who meets certain statutory criteria to petition the Court to have his or her criminal record expunged. Expungement means that the criminal record is physically destroyed. Sometimes, an individual may not qualify for an expungement but may still qualify to have his or her criminal record “sealed”. Sealing means the criminal record remains physically intact, but it is sealed from public view. The sealed criminal record can only be made public again through an extraordinary Court Order finding a “compelling public need” to reopen the criminal record to public view. With very specific exceptions, an individual who has successfully had his criminal record expunged or sealed is entitled to legally deny that the criminal charges ever existed. If you are experiencing repercussions or are just embarrassed because of a single mistake made many years ago, it makes sense to discuss your particular situation with an attorney knowledgeable in this area of the law. If you do qualify to have your criminal record expunged or sealed, your attendance at the court hearing is usually not required.

Group of teen girls transform home garage in Manatee County into an auto shop Information and image from Fox 13 The garage of a Lakewood Ranch home has become an auto shop for a group of teenage girls. “All females working,” explained Riley Trask. “It involves me and five other girls who are 17.” According to Fox 13 News, she heads the business based out of her family’s home. It’s called Riley’s Rebuilds. “After school, we come here to work for a couple of hours,” Riley explained. “We break down carburetors we receive from people all over the country, clean them up, rebuild them and send them back out.” She started working on carburetors with her dad a few years ago. “Cars are kind of just his hobby. Ever since I was 13, I’ve been doing it. I like how simplistic they are. It’s been a steady income,” Riley said. Her initial motivation for doing this was to buy her first car. She said her dad told her that she would have to raise her own money. “I thought he was going to buy me my first car. I was mistaken,” Riley said. “He told me to go into the garage, pick something out, and I saw an Edelbrock carburetor on the shelf.” Riley asked her dad what the object was, then asked how much it cost to sell it.
