PIRATE PENGUINS

Hello Pirate Penguins! Happy February! Hope you all had a great time at our Division Ice Skating fundraiser! It was a great way for us to contribute to the Pediatric Trauma Program! The California-Nevada-Hawaii District is so close to reaching our goal of $185,000! We are less than $3,000 away! Please welcome our new Lieutenant Governor Elect! Conclave was a success, and I can’t wait to see what the division has in store for its future years. I can’t believe how fast this term has gone by. There is only a little more than two months left. I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish, and I cannot wait to see what we will achieve in the future! Keep working hard and make these last few months the best we’ve ever seen! Finish strong! This is our time to create our lasting legacy!

Waddling with a smile,

Christopher Soo-Hoo DIVISION 19 NORTH Lieutenant Governor PAGE 4 | FEBRUARY 2017 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |

Search for Service! Written by: Division 19 North Service Expo Coord. Baylee Battle

Finding events can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! You don’t have to make events or find events on your own. There are many resources, including fellow members or officers that can help you in finding or coordinating service events. First, you can use other members. You can always hit up Baylee Battle, the division service expo coordinator, if you need help finding events. You can also refer to other clubs in the division for advice or ideas on events. When it comes to actual resources, there are websites you can use to help find events near you. A really great website to visit is volunteermatch.org . This website organizes events by location and type of event, based off of your preferences. Another great way to find events is to check with your school for any events they may be having, and see if they need help with any of them. Finally, another option is to check in with your local community center and see what upcoming events they have. Check with the director of the community center and see if they need help with their events. There are many ways to find events, and these are just a few, but you can always look in other places for events! Feel free to hit up Baylee Battle on facebook for help finding events, if you need any help!

Dues! Written by: Division 19 North Executive Assistant Celia Yu What is Club Rush? What time is it? Dues time! It's the time of the year to pay your dues! What are dues? Dues are annual payments to Key Club International to ensure that you continue to be a dues paid member. No events or service hours are counted until you have paid your dues! Payment is $11.50, but your school club may charge extra for donations. $7.00 goes to Key Club International, and $4.50 goes to our CNH District. The early bird deadline for dues is November 1st! The last day to pay your dues so they aren't late is December 1st. Put these dates on your calendar! Pay your dues to whichever board members are in charge, and they will ensure you are a dues paid member! Remember, this is very important because a member who has not paid dues would not be able to go to great events including DCON and Fall Rally! Get your dues in as soon as possible so you don't have to rush at the last minute! Many of you may not see the point of paying dues, but it is not only beneficial to Key Club International and the CNH District! All the money goes back to you, the members. An outline of what dues money includes is below:

PIRATE PENGUINS

2016 may have come to an end, but not our love for service! For the month of December, CAMS Key Club has helped out with five different service projects all over different cities. Coming from a math and science school, we started the month off by helping out at a local Math Maze in Carson where we checked participants in and gladly handed out awards. Later on, CAMS Key Clubbers travelled all the way to El Segundo to help Tree Musketeers plant a tree! Talk about Seeds of Service! In Palos Verdes, we helped out with a native garden restoration where we removed invasive species. Key Clubbers still chose to lend a hand the day right after Christmas as we passed out water and cheered runners on at Operation Jack at Dockweiler Beach. Towards the end of the month, we joined the division at Pasadena for the annual Rose Floats event! We haven’t forgotten about fundraisers! We sold merchandise at our last DCM and recently hosted a fundraiser at Frostbites. We plan on hosting additionally fundraisers in the coming months, especially one in January. Although school is right around the corner, our spirit still lives on. Many of us can’t wait to reunite as we make plans for elections and District Convention!

Da vinci

This month we attended the Rose Float. We had more students from Da Vinci attend than any other year. This was one of the many events we look forward to as a club because it not only allows us to work on something and feel proud to see it live on air, but also because we have the chance to bond with other divisions. Creating close bonds and new friendships within our division and outside our division is what we want our members to experience. Whether we were up working on the float or on the ground cutting flowers and on trash duty, everyone from Da Vinci can say that they creating a close bond during the Rose Floats. This month hasn’t been one of our most busiest months, however we are in the midst of planning a lot more for the new year. The board has come together to discuss fundraising and our further funding for DCON, which is our goal for this term. We have planned multiple fundraisers within and out of school. We are excited for the new year and what is to come!

PIRATE PENGUINS

gardena

For the month of December, Gardena Key Club was ready to get into the holiday season as well as ending it since we did start the New Year as a club who has had a tremendous growth from the past year. Not only have I provided many opportunities for members but many got to experience the seasonal events that can occur for the next years they have ahead of themselves for their Key Club journey. This only excites them and only wanting to continue their passion for

service. We started the month with Owl Awards night at our local Elementary School 186th. Here we had members distribute erasers and candy canes to those who were receiving principal awards for their outstanding achievements in the school year. Another group of members helped work the concessions stands, not only does this improve their social skills but always money counting skills. We then had our annual "Breakfast with Santa" at the Nakaoka Center on a bright early morning, unfortunately seniors like myself who wanted to enjoy this event one last time had to take the ACT but this event has only shown the amazing underclassmen who will be taking over the legacy I leave for this ever growing club. These underclassmen who show their devotion to wake up on early mornings to help their community only show how the ones who are leaving, made the right choice in inspiring underclassmen who will do the same by waddling for service! Mid December came and we were given the opportunity to collaborate with Barnes and Nobles, thanks to Jane Tokubo here we had our amazing Treasurer come along and help wrap any gifts that were given to these volunteers to wrap and add any decorations the customer pleased. Jane was also generous enough to have all tips go towards our club. Then came the long awaited "Rose Float Decorating" where we had 13 members from Gardena help and represent Division 19 North. Here members had the chance to see others members from different divisions come together and help one another decorate the Trader Joe's Rose Float and kudos to those who helped smooth the wood which isn't an easy task for teenagers to do but together we came along to do it for a great cause. Members also had the chance to take a bold risk and decorate on the high scaffoldings gluing flowers, beans, wheat, or glitter. The long early morning and afternoon didn't stop us from working with bright smiles and in the end seeing our minor details for such a major event being displayed at the Rose Float Festival. Not many have this opportunity so I hope for those who did attend only want to do this again and mark the end of the year right as it did for the members of Gardena Key Club. And finally we enter the New Year with goals for Gardena to keep waddling and have indomitable momentum for service events, member increase at service events / for the club itself, have underclassmen want to take leadership roles such a board members, or simply give back to the community. With the term almost over, I can honestly say this rollercoaster was such an awesome one and hoping into the next one, I only hope to aspire members to continue growing and make Gardena Key Club the best of Division 19 North.

PIRATE PENGUINS

The month of December for us was a little bit hectic and we were not able to do much because of the holidays. However, we tried to get as many events as possible. Since it was a short month for us, we really tried to make the best of it for our members. We had a card making event, in which our members stayed and made cards for people in need in order for them to enjoy their Christmas. Our Trick or Treat donations for UNICEF also turned out great. Donations were finally due last month. Later that month we attended a DCM/ movie where some of our members socialized with other members from other schools. The very last week before our break we had a potluck and we enjoyed every second of it. hawthorne

HMSA Key Club had 3 service events on the month of December. Our first event was the Girls on the Run Fall 5k Run/Walk where members welcomed and guided participants throughout the course. Our next event was Operation Jack Marathon. This event raises funds to donate to autistic research and charities.

hmsa

Our last event was the Rose Bowl Parade where members worked on floats, cut flowers and put them into vials or other work needed. As the club's members become more motivated, board elections are something they can look forward to.

lawndale

For the month of December, Lawndale Key Club has served a total of four service events including Tree Musketeers, organized canned goods, and wrapped

gifts for children! For Tree Musketeers, members removed weeds from the dirt around the trees and spread mulch around the environment to keep the trees healthy! Numerous members also participated in organizing canned goods and food items at William Anderson Elementary School. It took two days to organize boxes of food and distribute the goods to families who are less fortunate. Our last event took took place near the Lawndale City Hall, where members wrapped gifts for children. We also participated in the Rose Float Decorations! It’s always a great time serving along with our fellow pirate penguins, along with other divisions! We were making product, cutting flowers, and had the honor of working on the floats as

well! With this month closing, we are looking forward to next month with more service events and a future fundraisers!

Although she may be only a freshman and a fresh face to Key Club, she has shown true dedication to service throughout the busy month of December! It is amazing how she has went to most of the events in December such as Native Garden Restoration, Operation Jack, and Rose Floats. At all three events, Jazmin was surely remembered as a helping hand and ready to volunteer. We are always glad to see her at events because of her lovely smile and excitement to serve our community. One of her new New Year’s resolutions is to volunteer at more events, so CAMS Key Club is ecstatic to see her at future service events.

Carl arceo gardena Key Club The Member of the Month for the month of December is someone who is very spirited, energetic and ready to serve. Carl Arceo is a freshman member of the club who has shown great potential in being a future leader. So far in his High school career he has achieved more hours than some of our older members of the club. He was recently involved in all of the events that took place at our local elementary school. This month he has shown more than exceptional work and dedication to the club, and definitely deserves to be the Member of the Month for the month of December.

Alex reyes Mahaley mahe hawthorne Da Keyvinci ClubKey Club Alex Reyes is Hawthorne High's member of the month for December due to his sweet and caring personality. Jeremy lopez hmsa Key Club HMSA Key Club has selected Jeremy Lopez as its December member of the month. Jeremy is a wonderful junior Key Clubber who always has a smile on his face. Both in and out of the meetings, you would be glad to be around him because of his friendly spirit. He displays true initiative during events and works his hardest to serve his club and others in need. Jeremy is competent, caring and is always a pleasure to have at any event. During one of our most popular events this year, the Color Run, the characteristics that Key Club strives to instill in its members were seen in true colors within Jeremy. Although everyone felt exhausted after the event, Jeremy stayed longer to help until the end of the night and was a blast to be around. Jeremy has shown outstanding attendance to our events from the very beginning of the year, stretching all the way back to our Beach Clean Up. We can only hope for more character building by Jeremy and we see the best in him along with his future in HMSA Key Club.

Karina galindo Lawndale Key Club This month’s member of the month is Karina Galindo. She has been going to every event so far that we have put out and every meeting. She is member of the month because not only does she never complain about her job, she always is committed to service. She is very kind and always wants to meet new people in key club. She deserves this award because of her dedication even though this is her first year. PAGE 26 | FEBRUARY 2017 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |
