EDITOR’S note

HAPPY NEW YEAR PENGUINS!

With every new year, comes a new chance to make resolutions for yourself! As we approach mid January, I hope you all have been able to establish the goals that you want to achieve throughout the year. Take some time to reflect and see how you can grow to be the best version of yourself. Search for new opportunities where you can branch out and discover something new. Through this, I know that you all will be able to become a better friend, family member, and leader to those around you! Nearing the end of this month also means that most college applications have been due! Congratulations to all the seniors who have finished with their apps and I wish you all the best of luck for all your results! It’s crazy to think that it has almost been one year since this pandemic started, but I hope you all have continued to stay safe and healthy during this time. Remember to always check up on your friends and family and cherish every moment you spend with them. Thank you for reading this month’s newsletter! I hope you all enjoyed reading it. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Good luck and stay ICY.

WITH GRATITUDE, Julie Mai Division Newsletter Editor

LTG’S LETTER Happy New Year! While we leave the bad memories behind and bring the good memories into 2021, always remember what we represent and do. Thank you to those who were able to serve despite family visits during the Holidays and the pandemic. The last month was a very stressful and surprising month to get through. Hopefully, everyone was able to enjoy winter break and stay productive. Good job and congratulations to all of the seniors who finished their college applications. Now we wait for results to come out! It’s been such an incredible year so far and I can’t wait to serve throughout the rest of the term!

Sincerely, Ryan Son D19N Lieutenant Governor 4

CHARLES NGUYEN| LEUZINGER PRESIDENT

Happy 2021 everyone! In the month of December, our club attended the last DCM of 2020. It was a joint DCM which included Division 19 North and Division 19 South. As the meeting progressed, every club read out their monthly recaps and we were given updates on Spring Rally South and the news about Merchandise. Everyone was ready for the start of the new year and it was a great last DCM. Stay safe Penguins!

recaps

BOOKMARKS SERVICE PROJECT AKHIL ATLURI| CAMS CO-VICE PRESIDENT

For December, CAMS Key Club hosted a Bookmarks service project where members could participate in service projects through December 10th-17th. Invigorating their handmade bookmarks with passion and creativity, CAMS Key Club members emphasized the importance of reading and literacy toward pediatric patients. CAMS Key Club ended 2020 with a final service project to inspire youth across the South Bay and Greater Los Angeles communities!

CARDS OF APPRECIATION DANIELA LOPEZ| HHS HISTORIAN

For December, Hawthorne Key Club created a card with messages of appreciation. The card was made for our school staff to let them know that they’re hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. 7

CAMS | CELESTE GASTELUM

During the month of December, CAMS Key Club focused on helping learning children and senior citizens. Members created positive and inspiring bookmarks to emphasize the importance of literacy towards young readers. Key Clubbers brought smiles to senior citizens and pediatric patients by completing coloring sheets and creating holiday greeting cards. With the New Year beginning, the term begins to come to an end which means CAMS Key Club continues to plan service projects and election season.

DA VINCI | ANDREW CARIAS

Hello! For the month of December, our club had the last meeting of the year where we discussed a potential (it fell through sadly). The project was with El Segundo where we were to build buildups of holiday characters instead of a Santa visit which the city of El Segundo holds. Our club brainstormed ideas and submitted designs. After that, we also had our December DCM, here we went over our monthly recap. Happy New Year and that the new year will be great for everyone!

GARDENA| CHRISTIAN VIRATA

Ahoy! Hello, pirate penguins, Happy New Year! During the month of December, the main focus of Gardena Key Club was to finalize paid dues. By doing so we were able to submit our dues on time. Additionally, we held a social club zoom meeting where we were able to catch up with our members and see how they are holding up both mentally and physically as times can be tough right now. I hope you are all doing well and hopes for a great & safe new year.

HAWTHORNE| BRIAN DSOUZA

Ahoy Pirate Penguins! In the month of December, Key Club has been able to start service activities both community wise and even in school. To start off, we continued with our Recyclables for PTP event, where members and cabinet collected plastic/glass bottles and aluminum cans to help fundraise for PTP. So far, we have fundraised a total of $25.73 cents. We plan on continuing on until the end of winter break as we are going to begin collecting money during the month of January. Along with that, our cabinet has decided to make a positive message for all of the staff/teachers at Hawthorne High, as a thank you to all their hard work and dedication despite the current situation. We were able to have 18 members, (cabinet and advisor included) to create 2 different collage messages for our staff and teachers. After that, we also had our December DCM, the last DCM of the year where we went over our monthly recap. Included, members were able to create Virtual Greetings Cards. Other than that, we wish everyone a Happy New Year and that the new year will be great for everyone! Here, I have included the pictures for our teachers!

HMSA| SOPHIA CASTELLANOS & PABLO GARCÍA Hey Penguins! For the month of December, HMSA had three meetings. HMSA Club board met three times as well to go over new ideas and plans for the following weeks. HMSA Key Club is happy to have all its dues paid and finalized. During the duration of our meetings, the board has been playing games with the members such as scribbl.io. Our club is committed to staying active and cheery despite our current online platform. HMSA Key Club is excited to begin advocating for the Ocean Conservancy Organization which helps create a platform for peer review of government policies for the ocean. We plan to help by cleaning the beaches and by spreading awareness about how the oceans are being affected/neglected by governments. Our club is also going to contribute to the St. Judes Hospital by creating Christmas cards. HMSA Key Club is looking forward to the Pirate Penguin fun to come! Stay safe & icy!

LAWNDALE | ANGELA DELGADO Hello Pirate Penguins! In the month of December, Lawndale Key Club began writing letters to soldiers serving the military. We did this through a website named Write-a Soldier, which was introduced to us at our division’s November DCM. For a period of 10 days, Lawndale Key Club also worked on writing letters to Santa for the Macy’s store charity event. We were given the opportunity to write a short message about anything we’d like to the holiday figure through the Macy’s website. For each letter written, Macy’s donated one dollar to the Make-A-Wish foundation. We’re glad that we were able to spread joy throughout the holiday season by taking a few minutes of our time to write letters.

Happy New Years everyone! In the month of December, our club had its final last meeting of the year which discussed the opportunities that we may have in 2021 and the possibilities of more digital events. We also finished our Krispy Kremes fundraiser with 16 participants raising 450 dollars! It was a lot of work and it took time to pull it off, but the effort is well worth it. We plan to have another fundraiser to beat the amount we just raised and we look forward to the meetings in the new year! Stay safe everyone!
