PIRATE PENGUINS

Letter from the Ltg. Division 19 North,

Thank you for everyone who attended Officer Training Conference, to ensure you all have enough knowledge to serve the clubs and division. I know these words are the most dreaded words not many look forward to, welcome back to another school year. As we all begin to return back to school and back to studying for countless hours, let us remind each other the importance of staying as an ohana and supporting each other through this term. Also, with the starting of the school year it comes with a start of another Key Club season, Dues season. Many of you are looking forward for Fall Rally South, Rose Floats, and District Convention, however if you and the club that you serve does not pay their dues, you sadly cannot attend the events above. I highly recommend to help the other clubs within Division 19 North to ensure this term will run as a smooth sailing ship. Also please remember, as a division, we will be volunteering at the AIDS Walk instead of walking this coming October, because service should always be the number one priority since we all are in a studentled service organization. I wish you all luck this term and the school year and I cannot wait to see you all at the August DCM on August 29th! Waddling to Serve, Carolyn Chang DIVISION 19 NEWSLETTER |SEPTEMBER 2015 | PAGE 3

Club Articles CAMS

CAMS Key Club had a great month in terms of service as well as fundraising. We started the month By Christopher Soo-Hoo volunteering at our school’s fireworks stand the full week leading up to the fourth of July. We waved flags, cleaned the booth, and attracted customers. The sunburns were definitely worth the fun! Since so many hours were put in by our key clubbers, CAMS Key Club will get a portion of the profit which is estimated to give us at least $550 to prepare for DCON. During the same week, we visited Habitat for Humanity which unfortunately closed without giving us a notice. The next week we volunteered at the Stock the Pantry Food Bank near downtown LA to sort bread which were later given to schools and the homeless. CAMS Key Club also held a movie fundraiser for the Minions Movie on its opening day. We made just under $150 which will go to Project EliMiNaTe. Lastly, many of our key clubbers volunteered at the Special Olympics at three separate events. We cheered on the athletes competing in tennis, open water swimming, and the half marathon. CAMS Key Club had an amazing July, and we can’t wait to see the incoming Key Clubbers when school starts!

Club Articles Da Vinci Science

July was a busy and collaborative month for Da Vinci Science! On July 2nd, members from Da Vinci By Christian Cisneros Science, El Segundo, and King Drew Key Club volunteered at a Goodie Bag making event for Village Runner's 4th of July Race in Manhattan Beach. Members filled goodie bags for kids and adults with dozens of trinkets and papers. For the 4th of July, El Segundo invited Da Vinci to help run their snow cone booth. Members created and served snow cones in an effort to help raise funds for the Special Olympics! During this month, we also launched our Instagram! We hope that once prospective members see all of the amazing events that we have volunteered at, they will want to join for the passion of service. Members also attended the Division Clothing Drive event at Alondra Park. Members donated various articles of clothing and created playbooks for children in hospitals to help them pass the time. Shortly after, Da Vinci, El Segundo, and King Drew partnered together to run another snow cone booth at a concert in El Segundo’s Library Park. Clubs worked tirelessly to satisfy the snowy cravings of children, and in the end, managed to raise approximately $400.00 for the Special Olympics! Teamwork truly is key to an effective and productive club, and we would like to thank El Segundo for being amazing collaborators! In addition, a few of our members attended the rainy Division Council Meeting. One of the members said that they had fun, despite the rain! Overall, the month of July was an excellent month for Da Vinci Science, and we are excited for August! Go Pirate Penguins! "

Club Articles El Segundo

July was a busy month for El Segundo Key Club. On July 4th, Da Vinci helped us sell snow cones By Hannah C. Levy at El Segundo’s Fourth of July Celebration in order to raise money for the Special Olympics and PTP. Then the following weekend, Da Vinci joined us again to sell snow cones at El Segundo’s Concerts in the Park. In addition, we also participated in the division service project where we held a clothing drive and made patient playbooks to donate to hospitalized children. At the end of the month, during El Segundo's week as a Host Town for Special Olympics’ athletes of Barbados and Macedonia, several Key Club members volunteered at various events: we helped to welcome athletes to their dorms at LMU; cheered for the torch runners at Mattel; decorated the meeting hall at the Dockweiler youth center for a dinner with the athletes where we assisted and socialized with the athletes.

Club Articles Gardena

Spending summer service events was a wonderful experience for our club. A lot of time with the By Tina Duong Nakaoka Center as we helped set up the Concert in the Park. Plenty of hours spent with the various tasks over at 186th Elementary School. There were also plenty of division events (Clothing Drive, Patient Playbook, etc.) which brought closer connections with the key club members from different schools. It brings me great pleasure to see new members participating, as well as the continuing support from our returning members. Sadly, summer vacation will be ending. In a couple of weeks, school will be beginning where new adventures and memories are to be expected, so I’m really looking forward of the outcome.

Club Articles This past month for Hawthorne High School our vice president and treasurer met with Kiwanis advisors By Nico Fernandez for lunch and a brief exchange of information and greetings in preparation for the upcoming year. With many Key-Clubbers out and about we reframed from holding an event this past month. Our Key Club advisor moved from a teaching position to an administrative position forcing us to move classrooms, therefore a few members gladly aided in the club’s transferring of rooms. I personal spent a Saturday in Banning scorekeeping for a youth Karate tournament. It was a combination of scorekeeping for the karate matches and time keeping. The day was designed as a training in order for me to acquire title Chief Score keeper for the nationals tournament in September. We will be working with Whittier Key-Club in order to have ample amount of volunteers for the event. Hawthorne Key Club will be solely responsible for the food distribution of the event but we will work joint with Whittier for planning organization of participants and ring coordination. Meeting dates are only preliminary at this point and not yet set but when the event comes we will be meeting with Whittier Key-Club and the sponsors of the event in order to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the competing contenders of the tournament, the fans, and our own volunteers.

Club Articles Surprisingly, the month of July was an amazing month of service for the club. The month was kicked off By Ricardo Almazan with HMSA Key Club teaming up with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) to help run a SEEK (Summer Engineering Experience for Kids) Camp at Zela Davis Elementary School. Members spent the majority of July attending this program daily to help out in classrooms and readying elementary kids for competitions. Many members were skeptical of this program due to having to interact with young children. However, it is nice to say that members created unforgettable bonds with their students and mentors; many even want to volunteer in this program again next year. Many members felt a Key Club-esque vibe from this program, as these students came up with their own cheers and strived to do better (Perhaps members are already excited for Fall Rally.)The rest of the club’s volunteer events really helped strengthen bonds with our Kiwanis family. Unexpectedly, the club was given the opportunity to get involved with the Special Olympics. The Kiwanis Club of Hawthorne held a dinner for Nigerian and Estonian athletes and coaches. Members helped with set up of the event as well as helped the serving of food. Not only did members help out, but were also welcomed gladly by dances and culture from these two countries. One member actually had a selfie taken with a Nigerian athlete! Lastly, the club also helped out running the annual Kiwanis Carnival ran by Hawthorne’s Kiwanis Club. Members helped out in shifts running the entrance while indirectly helping out our community. Not much has been planned for August, but our board members are working hard readying for the new school year Key Club is entering. Overall, we (and our members as well) are excited to see what the new school year will bring to Key Club.

Robin Ferrer

The Member of the Month of CAMS Key Club is the wonderful Robin Ferrer! Robin has become a more active member this month and brings her enthusiasm everywhere she goes. Robin’s jokes and giddy personality puts a smile on everyone’s faces. This past month she has gone to the DCM and the Special Olympics Tennis at UCLA. She cheered on the special athletes with all her heart and mind. Robin, as well as being an amazing person, brought her friends to the events too! During this busy month, we appreciate members like Robin who come and help out. We hope that she continues to stay an active member for this new school year to come and continue to introduce people to Key Club. Submitted by: David Lopez

Da Vinci Science Key Club

Benuka Subasinghe

Benuka has begun showing interest in Key Club quiet recently by going to his first Key Club event in El Segundo making snow cones. His hard work and persistence really allowed the event to continue smoothly with minimal obstacles. He has always been around our club, popping into meetings every now and then but this event in El Segundo was the first time he was able to meet other Key Clubbers at other schools. He really enjoyed the experience and we see him playing a bigger role than just a member in our clubs future if he continues to show his dedication and spirit. We hope to see him at future event with both the club and division.

This month the member who has made the biggest contribution is Ronaldo Robles. This summer HMSA Key club volunteered at a summer camp for young children and we are proud to say Ronaldo Robles was an excellent volunteer. In addition to his tremendous dedication to the summer program he volunteered at the Kiwanis Carnival and has contributed so much effort and enthusiasm to the club.
