Club Articles By Christopher Soo-Hoo

September was a great, busy month for CAMS Key Club! We began the month volunteering at Fiesta Hermosa by helping out at their bike corral. We tagged their bikes and gave bikers free parking to encourage traveling using bikes instead of cars. The week after, we spent 3 days at Gardena’s 85th Anniversary carnival running a booth which earned us $62 for PTP. Following that week, CAMS Key Club hosted the division’s DCM along with the beach cleanup and bonfire. The day after, we volunteered at the Kickin’ Cancer 5K along with HMSA Key Club to raise awareness for breast cancer. The next week also had two events: a ukulele festival and the Alive and Running 5K where we volunteered alongside Lawndale Key Club. September was a month filled with service. With club rush approaching in early October, we are excited to recruit new members and spread the Key Club spirit! DIVISION 19 NEWSLETTER |NOVEMBER 2015 | PAGE 9

The month of September was a fantastic month for Da Vinci Key Club! Officers eagerly awaited Club Rush, where we would show students what Key Club was truly about. We spent all Friday morning preparing our booth, finalizing flyers, and dressing up in our spirit gear. Officers and members created Instagram props, flyers, signs, and decorated items after Key Club meetings in order to prepare for Club Rush. By the end of Club Rush, we had about 200 or so sign-ups, and approximately half of them came to our first meeting the following week! We had to hold the same meeting in two rooms because the room was so crowded! Many of the new members also came back the following week to continue learning about Key Club and the upcoming events we offered. We also had our first bake sale of the term, and we were able to raise approximately $100.00 for PTP/Eliminate through all of the goods that members brought. A few members volunteered alongside El Segundo at the Habitat for Humanity Trivia Night at Vista Mar, and the members said that they had a lot of fun volunteering. On that same day, we had a few members volunteer at a Netball Tournament, where they helped keep score, serve snacks, and clean up! The following week, we had approximately 20 members attend the Heal the Bay Coastal Cleanup at Dockweiler Beach and Division Council Meeting, and the majority of those members were new! It was exciting to see so many new faces from Da Vinci and the division as a whole. Together, we cleaned up Dockweiler Beach and bonded through the various ice breakers held during the D.C.M. Da Vinci also had 20+ members volunteer at the Kiwanis Sponsored Richmond Street Fair, where they helped clean up, work the info booth, and more alongside Kiwanis and El Segundo. The month of September was filled with passion, and we are ready to take on the spooky month of October!

During the month of September, some of El Segundo Key Club’s members and some members from Da Vinci Key Club helped Habitat for Humanity run their annual trivia night fundraiser event. We set up tables, served pizza, and helped clean up. We also had a 'Kiwanis Take-Over' in which we led the Kiwanis Club bi-monthly meeting. This month we also had Club Rush, and our board wore their spirit gear and stuck clothes pins on people to remind them to join Key Club while explaining what Key Club is and the benefits of joining it using posters. At our DCM, we participate in the beach cleanup with the division at Dockweiler Beach. Then, at the end of the month, we assisted our Kiwanis Club in their annual Richmond Street Fair at their information booth.

The month of September was the highlight of fundraising for our club and The Eliminate Project. We had our usual exciting events with our community partners: The Nakaoka Center and 186th Elementary. The Nakaoka Center gave us a wonderful opportunity to run a booth at the Mas Fukai Fair. We were very thankful to experience this wonderful opportunity and it was only thanks to everyone's hard effort that we were able to have a successful fundraiser. There were a lot of festivals (Heritage Festival, Food, Wine, and Cigar Festival) where we helped set up and assisted the various booths the festival had to offer. In addition to the festivals there was a Bocce Ball Tournament where our key clubbers had to set up and recorded the scores. After the event, they had the opportunity to play Bocce Ball for themselves which was very entertaining. Keep Gardena Beautiful was also on the same day where our members went to Rush Gym and wrapped gifts early before the winter holidays. 186th Elementary gave us a project/fundraiser where we are currently collecting Box Tops. In addition to that, we made invitations for the Gardena High Reunion Event and sold delicious snacks and drinks to the student attending Back to School Night at 186th Elementary. Overall Gardena Key Club is doing very well. Our treasurer, Jennifer Corte is currently looking for more local fundraisers and our secretary, Michael Valderama will be working on our first social gathering, along with our board, to improve relationships among our members. Club Articles By Nico Fernandez By Christopher Soo-Hoo

Hi so for Hawthorne this past month the first half of our month went towards preparation for our event on the 26th which was the annual youth karate nationals tournament. But before the karate tournament we attended the beach cleanup DCM on the 19nth. I was happy that around thirty members made it to the DCM most of them being freshman. The club really enjoyed interacting with the other clubs of 19N and practicing fall rally cheers. After the DCM my cabinet and I went right back to planning for our event at the youth karate nationals tournament. We were able to contact our local Kiwanis and they provided 5 cars to help us take members to Whittier for the event. We borrowed a van from one of the member’s parent and we were able to take around 30 kids to the event which was a more than ample amount. We had members score keeping the karate matches, selling food, watching trophies, and signing competitors in. The event was a huge success the founder of the event wants us to host the event again next year as well. It was extremely hot into the 90s but the members had a blast and we had two Kiwanis members stay throughout the event to watch the young competitors in the tournament as we volunteered. Yesterday we also went to the Manhattan Beach film festival which consisted of ushering, setting up chairs, and passing out pamphlets. After shifts the members could go into the theaters and watch films of up and coming directors and film creators. Events have been going great and it seems like new people slowly but surely are coming to our meetings now interested in what our key club is doing.

The month of September was an exciting month for our home club at HMSA. To start off we held our first meeting of the school year where we had a full house in our multipurpose room. Many of the new members were really excited for beginning a year of service. We even began collecting dues and many newer members were eager to pay their mandatory donation. Our club really did enjoy volunteering at the Beach Clean Up and DCM hosted by our division. We had at least 30 members volunteer and many were very happy in bonding with their Key Club ohana. Luckily we had the opportunity to volunteer the following day with CAMS’ Key Club at the 14th Annual Kickin’ Cancer 5K. Here, our members manned a water station where we passed out cups of water to runners. We helped with set-up and helped our CAMS’ Key Clubbers with packing up the event. To begin to close up the month, our club fundraised at our school’s Back To School Night where we sold pupusas. We sold out, so we were very happy with our work for that day. In addition, we ended up having two Freshmen Orientations during school to inform oblivious freshmen about Key Club. Our result was having many freshmen excited Key Club and service and show up at our meeting; also, our board experienced one of our best meetings to date. As October and November loom near, our board and members are very enthusiastic to wear our club is headed.

For the month of September King Drew Key Club had attended the DCM and beach cleanup that took place in Dockweiler Beach on September 19th. This was such a great event that allowed for both interaction of the division and a way to help out the environment. This month we also volunteered at the Santa Monica 5K on September 13th by cheering on the runners and awarding medals to the people who completed the race. Finally, on Oct. 3rd we had a wonderful time volunteering with Self-Help Graphics for their Dia De Los Muertos Event later on in October. We had made banners and helped to assemble some paper-mache skulls as well as some orange and pink paper flowers. The month of October has just begun and I am sure that we can accomplish so much within this month.
