Letter from LTG

Jared Keating Gobble Gobble Division 19 North! 3 years ago when I attended my first ever Key Club meeting, I remember huddling in hot and crowded room, awkwardly reciting a pledge and screaming the embarrassing “How do you feel?” cheer. I was an awkward freshman and I had a lot of anxiety when it came to socializing, so I immediately left the meeting once an ice breaker was announced. I was hesitant to join the club at first, however, I decided to attend a service event, The Color Run Night, after my friends signed up to volunteer. I was expecting a long and uneventful night, however, little did I know that this would be the beginning of my Key Club journey. The Color Run Night introduced me to a entirely new perspective of Key Club, as I discovered that Key Club was more than a simple service organization. I discovered that Key Club is an Ohana of dedicated high school students, who perfectly embody caring, leadership, character building, and inclusiveness values and who devote their passion to serve their home, school, and communities. I still don’t know if it was getting covered in colored powder or the taste of chalk in my mouth, but by the end of the event, I knew I had found a new Ohana. I continued to attend events and eventually I attended my first Fall Rally South. I remember screaming my lungs out and screaming for Lieutenant Governor Carolyn, but I never imagined that I would be on stage, serving as Lieutenant Governor and leading over 200 Pirate Penguins from Division 19 North through a spirit session. Fall Rally South this year seems like a dream that was supposed to end when I woke up the next day. Experiencing Fall Rally South from the perspective of Lieutenant Governor was surreal and completely exuberant. Although the weeks leading up to Fall Rally and hours before the spirit session were incredibly stressful, seeing the sea of blue and all of your wonderful faces in the stands at the Golden Bear Theater immediately reassured me.

3

The best part about being on stage was screaming our cheers with the rest of the Division from the stage. The atmosphere was completely explosive when Division 19 North began cheering. I am sorry for not being able to lead Division 19 North to another spirit stick, however, I can genuinely say that I am proud of all Division 19 North has accomplished leading up to Fall Rally South. At Region Training Conference, Division 19 North was eliminated first during both spirit sessions, however, we were able to redeem ourselves by coming back with unbelievable new cheers and by making it to the top three during our spirit session. We may not have won the spirit stick, however, we were able to fundraise over $4000 for the Pediatric Trauma Program, which was the most in all of Region 8 and accumulate over 6,849 hours of community service. We were able to purchase not 1, 2, but 5 District Board members, two of which were District Executives we purchased for $1000! Furthermore, we not only had 1,2, but 3 representatives from District Board representing Division 19 North at Fall Rally South, the 2nd most in all of CNH! Division 19 North, we may have not won the spirit stick, however, these numbers prove how strong, dedicated, and passionate, each and every one of you are! Fall Rally South was unimaginable this year and I could not have executed this event without the support of my Division Leadership Team and Presidents Teams. Please remember to thank these individuals for all of the work they put into making your Key Club experience extraordinary! I would like to give a special shoutout to Albert Chen, Andrew Yang, Chester Virata, Ramses Donis, and the rest of the Spirit Team for all of the time and effort they put into preparing for Fall Rally. Without these individuals, Fall Rally would not have been what it was. I can truly say, from the bottom of my heart, that I love each and every one of you and there is no other Division I would rather serve. I am extremely honored and proud to serve as your Lieutenant Governor. If you are interested in running to become the next Lieutenant Governor of Division 19 North, make sure to attend Candidate Training Conference on December 8th from 10 - 4 PM at the Anaheim Public Library. This event is mandatory for all candidates, as this training conference will prepare each candidate for the role and responsibilities of this position. Thank you to everyone who came to our Friends-KEY-ving November DCM! Our next DCM will be our annual Movie Night on Potluck with Division 19 South. The DCM will be held on December 15th from 5 - 9 PM at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Lomita! I hope I made Fall Rally South and the beginning of this term unforgettable for each of you! Keep Waddlin’ and Stay Poppin’

CAMS

By: Nikki Catangay, CAMS Key Club Co-Vice President

For the month of October, CAMS Key Club participated in the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair, the Long Beach Marathon, RTC Canned Food Drive, LA Printer Fair, dog toy making, AIDS Walk, Tricks for Treats, Awake-a-Thon projects and Awakea-Thon which adds up to a total of 9 service events. With the help of these events we reached 2950.5 hours! Many of our members also made it out to the Region 8 Training Conference where they acquired leadership skills in a myriad of workshops. We have been preparing for Fall Rally South at spirit sessions after school, during lunch, and on the weekend. We are excited to see what the pirate penguins bring to the Fall Rally!

DA VINCI By: Natalia Zeledon

What’s Waddlin Pirate Penguins? For the month of September we had our yearly club rush and three service events! Our club board was at our club booth recruiting new members for about 3 hours for each session at our schools club fair. We have mainly been focusing on educating and getting to know members at club meetings. One member attended the Santa Monica Classic earlier in the month where her and other pirate penguins registered runners and cleaned up. We also had a joint club event with El Segundo, Hawthorne, and HMSA Key Clubs at the Richmond Street Fair, that was hosted by our own sponsoring Kiwanis! We helped vendors set up their booths and clean up the fair. Last but not least, two members attended the Kickin’ Cancer 5k with other pirate penguins where they registered runners, provided refreshments, and cleaned up the event. Our club looks forward to attending more division events and sharing our love for key club with our new members!

El segundo By: Anjelica Ayalde , El Segundo Key Club President

Hey D19N! For the month of September, we were able to attend the Richmond Street Fair and the DCM for August! We were able to help clean the fair at El Segundo and while keeping our environment clean. It was nice to see the growing amount of members we have attending for the events that are happening for this year’s term! Hopefully, after our club rush day, we will gather more, new members for El Segundo’s Key Club!

Gardena By: Sandra Kim, Gardena Key Club President

Throughout the month of October, Gardena Key Club raised funds for the Pediatric Trauma Program and had service events around the community! We had nine service events and two fundraisers this past month. First off, members helped out kids at the arts and crafts tables at the city’s Heritage Festival. Then on October 7, five members took a bus provided by 186th Elementary to pick up trash on the beach with some elementary students. At Freeman Park, Gardena Key Club helped set up the Haunted House for six days and even helped scare people in it on Halloween Day! In addition, we also fundraised for our Fall Rally chaperones’ tickets at Freeman Park by selling chips and hand-decorated sugar cookies. We were able to raise $104, surpassing our goal of $84 and donating the remainders of the money to PTP. Many members participated in division events this month as well! Several members donated supplies for the Food Finders Supply Drive at Region Training Conference and at Awake-a-thon. Members also went to the Service & Spirit Day and helped cut up shirts and braid dog toys at Del Aire. Next, 17 members from Gardea Key Club and a chaperone (our faculty advisor) participated in AIDS Walk this year. Lastly, we had 27 members at Awake-a-thon and we sold chips, raising $40 for PTP. With all of these events, our members were able to get their hours and spirits up for Fall Rally!

LEUZINGER For the month of October Leuzinger Key Clubbers volunteered at a few events and brought their best to the community. The first event to start off this spooky month was the Community BBQ Dinner at the Hawthorne Memorial Center on October 18th. The following volunteer event our members attended was the AYSO Friendship Festival at Dana Middle School on October 20th, there was a turnout of twelve key clubbers, all who volunteered from 8am to 3pm helping accompany kids with disabilities, preparing/maintaining the events. The last event members volunteered at was one celebrating Halloween spirit! The Halloween Carnival at the Hawthorne Memorial Center was a fun event where sixteen members assisted in running games booths and rewarding the early trick o’ treaters with candy.

Santa monica By: Savannah Yassin, SAMO Key Club President

Ahoy Pirate Penguins! Santa Monica has been in the full swing of the 2018-19 term, and have completed a variety of projects this October. To begin, we held our officer re-elections for this term. Unfortunately, we had a few members drop out, so we had to re elect officers immediately! We elected a new secretary, Kayla Degracia, a new webmaster, Maddie Landon, and a new ICC rep (our clubs connection with Samohi student council), Sophia Cooper. Although we were disappointed to lose our board members, we are super excited to have new, enthusiastic additions to our cabinet! Secondly, Samohi participated in the annual APLA AIDS walk! We were super excited to have over 35 members of Key Club involved, for a total of 280 service hours this month alone from that event! We also fundraised over $700 for AIDS research through our member participation in the walk. Finally, we had a bake sale to fundraise for PTP and we were super successful! In one day, we raised over $500. We were located on 15th street and Montana Avenue in Santa Monica. We had many members of our community stop by and buy treats, donate money, and learn about our organization and our various goals! We held a total of 4 general board meetings this month, and our member participation has skyrocketed since last year! We have about 55 members attending regular meetings, and based on our past events, the majority of them are active in attending events as well. We held a total of 2 board meetings, where we planned the AIDS walk and worked out details for our fundraiser. We also had a meeting with our Kiwanis advisor, Michael Flinkman, and discussed finances for the upcoming year, and set up a budget. We are super excited for next month, where we plan on hosting a canned food drive with APLA, as well as organizing a thanksgiving brown bag lunch making project, similar to the one we did last year.
