SENIOR Living

SOUTH JERSEY | FEBRUARY 2023

Between 1946 and 1964, America experienced a population explosion referred to as the Baby Boom with members of this generation now aged 59 to 77. More than 76 million people were born during this time. As this generation ages and its numbers wane, the Millennials who are now aged 27 to 42 born between 1981 and 1996 have surpassed the Baby Boom generation in size. While Baby Boomers bring with their aging the need for more medical care in the U.S. so too will the large generation of Millennials to follow. As a result, it is more important now than it has ever been in America’s history to be sure we are all well taken care of in our twilight years.

One of the ways our justice system allows for regulation of the industry is through the consult of attorneys specializing in nurs-

ing malpractice claims by individuals or families who have met with harm at the hands of a facility. Keep in mind that the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has reported that facilities with low nursing levels tend to have the highest rates of poor patient care. Time and again studies show that low nursing levels are associated with an increase in facility acquired infections, pressure wounds, and falls with injury. One would think that nursing homes would attempt to alleviate this health care hazard by attracting more nurses through better pay and benefits, but that is not always the case. As an attorney who handles neglect cases, I know that many claims are filed due to inadequate and incompetent nursing staff. In my experience, these decisions are at times based upon the profit margin for the facility which does not

prioritize patient care. Issues can also occur simply due to poorly run facilities. To help you choose a nursing home for your loved one, the NJ Department of Health has established a nursing staff to patient ratio quarterly report for facilities that can be accessed online through the following link: https://www.nj.gov/ health/healthcarequality/ health-care-professionals/ nurse-to-patient-staffing/backgr ound/nhstaffing.shtml. Hopefully this provides some assistance to those of you searching for a facility that fits your needs. If you or a loved one meets with harm or injury due to nursing neglect, please feel free to contact me at 800-PRA-LAWS or swarfel@pralaw.com. For more information, you can also visit my firm’s website at www.pralaw. com. 

The Lakeview Memorial Park Board of Trustees is proud to announce the opening of the new addition, Mausoleum of the Saints. The opening will take place before the end of October. We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience during the difficult circumstances that were experienced the last few years. Our beautiful addition will serve as a peaceful and tranquil rest-

ing place for the many families we are honored to serve. We ask that you avail yourselves the opportunity to tour our new facility and consider this option for your loved ones. The new building allows you to choose from single or double casket locations, as well as lovely glass or marble front cremation niches. No Bull Mattress & More has the prices you are looking for right in time for Fall. They have something for everyone. Saving every customer 55 to 80 percent every minute of every day in a no haggle, no hassle, no pressure environment.

No Bull Mattress & More truly is the little guy the big guys hope you don’t find. That is their motto, and there may not be a more fitting one for any business anywhere. Located in a lit-

tle warehouse next to Dunkin’ Donuts at 2060 Springdale Road in Cherry Hill, take one step inside the front door and you will instantly realize it is unlike any mattress store you have ever been in.

Carole Cutry is the owner and operator with family employees. With virtually no paid advertising, and operating out of a warehouse rather than a big expensive showroom, she simply does not have the overhead that all the others have and can therefore hit lower price points.

Not only has she taken all of the overhead out of buying a mattress, she also eliminated the deceptive advertising, phony sales and high pressure sales tac-

tics that are unfortunately all too common nowadays.

“My goal is for my customers to have fun buying a mattress,” Cutry says. “And if they’re able to come here and find lower prices than any other place, and not have to haggle for those prices, that is a fun buying experience. I want every person that walks out of here to have a smile on their face. We want to be a breath of fresh air in the marketplace.”

No Bull Mattress & More can be found at 2060 Springdale Road in Cherry Hill, and can be reached at (856) 751-1371 or www.nobullmattress.com Call or stop in. Open Mon – Fri 10-5pm (closed Tuesday) Sat 11-430pm, Sun 12-4pm. 

A life beautifully focused

Dr. Elliot Coleman shares his talents at The Evergreens

The first thing you notice about Elliot Coleman is his kind and easy-going way with people. He’s a good storyteller with a winning smile. It’s no surprise to learn Dr. Coleman’s warm and caring bedside manner was one of his greatest professional attributes as a cardiologist.

Since retiring, he’s applied a similar focus to the art of photography. His pictures are displayed throughout the apartment he shares with his wife at The Evergreens, a beautiful Acts Retirement-Life Community in Moorestown, New Jersey.

Elliot’s photography has been a hobby for decades. He developed an interest years ago while serving in Vietnam. Over time, he honed his craft and learned new techniques and equipment.

“I started taking pictures with a Canon, stopped and started throughout my life, and picked

it up again when we’d travel,” he notes. “Now I’m using a digital camera…and it’s much easier.”

Dr. Coleman came to The Evergreens a few years ago on a lark. “We really had no immediate plans to move. We didn’t appreciate how much better our lives would be here, but what we found was just perfect for us,” he says. “We fell in love with the place right away and moved in just four months later. It’s wonderful doing the things you love.”

The commitment to healthy living, the profound sense of well-being, and the spirit of community and friendship are found throughout the campus.

Jim Petty, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Mission for Acts Communities is proud to add, “We’ve been very successful offering the best of today’s healthy lifestyle while providing long-term peace of mind and security. But it’s the communities

themselves, the social networks built among residents, the relationships with staff, and the pervasive dedication to service and compassion that extends through every part of living here.”

As a continuing care retirement community (CCRC), The Evergreens offers more than just maintenance-free living today. It also provides long-term comfort and security. And with Acts Life Care ® residents know they’ll pay for future care in today’s dollars should their needs change.

These days, Elliott can often be found helping his friends edit their photos, as they capture all the picture-perfect moments of the good life at the evergreens. Find out how you can zoom in on a retirement you’ll love. Visit The Evergreens today. (856) 372-5819, AboutActs.com/ Sun

sion.

cate bridge and bridge etiquette at 9:30 am, playing 12-18 boards at 10 am, and a post-game board review with the director.

hy Plan Ahead and Pre-Pay for your arrangements with McCann-Healey Funeral Home in Gloucester City?

Peace of Mind

Many who have undergone the emotional strain of arranging a funeral within hours of losing a loved one have made the choice to pre-plan their own funeral. Doing so lifts the burden from their loved ones by relieving decision-making pressure at a time of grief and emotional stress.

Personal Choice

Funeral arrangements are a deeply personal choice. Pre-planning provides you with the time needed to make practical, detailed decisions that reflect your standards, lifestyle, taste and budget. And we assure you and your family that the choices you make will be carried out as planned.

Lower Costs

When you finalize your plan, we can advise you of the total cost. You do not have to set aside

funds for your plan, but doing so protects you against escalating funeral costs. By locking in today’s funeral costs and ensuring that the necessary funds are set aside, you help relieve yourself of unnecessary future worry and your survivors of an unexpected expense.

Senior Real Estate Specialist

As a Senior Real Estate Specialist, I bring knowledge, and years of experience working with seniors and their families to compassionately assist in marketing their homes for sale. This is often a sad time with the passing of a loved one, or the decision to relocate after decades of living in their home. The process can be overwhelming and confusing and requires an agent to be a trusted and patient resource with the ability to communicate extensively. The process is

not simply about putting a “For Sale” sign on the front lawn. I have extensive connections with contractors, clean-out companies, staging experts, estate sale and auction companies, elder care attorneys, and senior placement services. I believe education is critical to my profession and have earned additional Realtor designations and certifications that include Certified Residential Specialist, Accredited Buyer Representation, Real Estate Negotiation Expert, and At Home With

Diversity, as well as awards that include NJAR Circle of Excellence Gold 2020-21, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Chairman’s Circle Gold 2020-21, and Five Star Professional 2012-2022. My goal is to ensure my clients enjoy a smooth and confident process from our first meeting to settlement and beyond. Navigating Medicare Insurance Supplements

Brian Zimmerman has been in the Insurance business since 1989, helping small business owners, Individuals and seniors get Health and Life Insurance. Purchasing a Medicare plan can be extremely confusing. Every time you turn on the TV there’s a Medicare commercial or your mailbox is full of advertisements. If you’re turning 65

It’s almost impossible to figure out what plan to go with. Some of you may need help picking up Part B. I’ve been doing this for over 32 years and I represent all the carriers. I’ll make sure your doctors, Hospitals are in network and your prescriptions are covered. I listen to what your needs are like Dental, Vision, hearing aids and gym membership . If

your income is low you may be eligible for extra help on RX or Medicare part B. I get paid by the insurance company so my help costs you nothing. After you’re enrolled I’m there to answer all your questions. In addition to that many of my clients need life insurance, long term care Insurance or have to roll over a 401k. I can help navigate that as well.

Tips From South Jersey Window Tinting

Installing films on the interior windows of your home may not be at the top of your home-makeover “to-do” list, but South Jersey Window Tinting has several good reasons why homeowners should consider this a priority. South Jersey Window Tinting believes in, “Block the Sun, Not the View” concept.

As one of the area’s largest contractors of window films, South Jersey Window Tinting has more than three decades of experience and knowledge in the importance of Window Film. Here are some tips why window tinting is essential:

Why should people seriously consider investing in window tinting for their home?

“For heat, glare, fading of flooring, furniture, paintings, wallpaper, etc. We also offer safety film to protect from glass breakage and intruders”.

How does putting film on the windows reduce energy costs?

“By installing film, you are not allowing 100% of the cold air to penetrate through the glass surface, reducing heating costs. What does come through during the winter is trapped, which keeps the heat inside your home”.

Talk a little bit about how your product provides protection from the sun?

“This is the latest, nanotechnology film that is applied to the interior of the existing glass, which insulates homes both summer and winter. It protects you and your home from harmful UV rays”.

How much does it cost?

“Pricing is job specific. Call or

email us to receive a FREE estimate. We run several pricing incentives throughout the year...We have one going on now!”

What’s involved in this installation?

“Jobs vary from one to the next. Our experienced installers will go over everything with you from start to finish”.

With most people spending more time at home, dealing with excessive glare and the need for privacy has become a priority. Ask the experts at South Jersey Window Tinting for suggestions!

Thinking about Auto Tinting? Our products block out 99.9% of UV rays to improve safety and privacy. Our films are approved by the American Cancer Society. We are South Jersey’s #1 Auto Tinting company since 1985!

JB Bakery, where everything is always Just Baked, and people are always smiling

JB Bakery began as a bagel and bread shop in 1952. Over time, ownership passed from family to family, and the product line increased. Fifteen years ago, Burlington native Stephen Simon purchased JB and made it what it is today: a local landmark and dessert lover’s paradise that is regularly voted one of Burlington County’s best bakeries. Originally, JB stood for “John’s Burlington Bakery”, the bakery’s founders, Mr. Simon sees it as “Always Just Baked” because it operates 24 hours a day to produce fresh-baked products. At JB, professional bakers and pastry chefs employ traditional methods to perfect the art of dessert making. They use scratch mixes and high-quality ingredients free of preservatives and imitation flavors, with the human element involved from creation to consumption. The bakery offers hardto-find specialties from all over the world, holiday delicacies, seasonal specials, fresh bread and rolls, a coffee bar, and exceptional service. The chefs design custom cakes for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, Sweet 16s, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, holidays, reunions, and many other occasions; by establishing relationships with customers and listening to their ideas, JB’s allstar staff turns cake dreams into reality.

Grief is not a permanent state, but a process one goes through as a means of coping with loss. Everyone experiences grief differently, but it always hurts. From sadness to guilt, anger and/or fear, support services are available to give you the opportunity to share your feelings with a professional or with others who are also experiencing loss.

treats: These services incorporate therapeutic activities and programs to help families, children and individuals through the healing process.

Through the years, JB has become a Burlington County landmark. It is annually featured in the local news, and people visit from out-of-state to tour the facility and taste the sweets. Guests cherish walking in and experiencing the rich aroma that is unique to real, old-fashioned bakeries. A few years ago, JB gained fame for introducing its ever-popular “Whale Cookie,” a sugary delight inspired by the brave beluga that swam the Delaware River. The bakery was especially honored to host Food Network Chef Robert Irvine for an episode of Dinner Impossible, entitled “Nightshift: Impossible”, during which Irvine used JB’s oldworld techniques and machinery to pull a culinary all-nighter.

Above all, JB is a family bakery and a part of the local community. Generations have come to regard it as “their” bakery, and it is common for people who grew up with JB birthday cakes to feature JB at their weddings as well. It is the official bakery of Burlington’s Wood Street Fair and supports other local events such as Festival of Lights, Bike Night, and the car show. JB frequently makes gift and product donations to local organizations and fundraising efforts, and it creates jobs for community members.

Common types of grief services & support

• In-person and online support groups: Support groups offer companionship and give you the opportunity to share your story openly and guilt-free. You also have the opportunity to hear the stories of others and talk about coping day-to-day, as well as on the most difficult days of your grief.

• Grief camps and re-

• Private counseling: Counseling offers the opportunity to talk things over with a trained counselor, which can help you make sense of your feelings. Counselors can offer you encouragement, support and advice through the grieving process.

• Remembrance memorials: You can organize a memorial or many organizations (churches, hospices, etc.) hold community remembrance/memorial services throughout the year on special occasions like during the holiday seasons. This is done to honor those lost throughout the year and to help families remember their loved ones.

At Bradley Funeral Home, we

have resources and a local grief support list. If you are interested in what is available, please contact us (856)983-1005 or info@BradleyFHMarlton.com. There are also many online forums which provide grief support. You can search them on the web.

It is important to remember, you are not alone in your grief. There are people walking the same path as you. Some ahead, some behind and sometimes you find someone alongside of you. We do not cry the same tears, but there is comfort and help to be found in others along the grief journey.

“It takes strength to make your way through grief, to grab a hold of life and let it pull you forward.”

Exercise: An Effective Defense Against Winter Depression

For millions of Americans, the shorter days of fall and winter lead to feelings of sadness and even depression, a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). While light therapy has long been thought to provide some degree of relief, an increasing body of evidence suggests that exercise is one of the best defenses against seasonal depression.

How Exercise Impacts the Brain

According to research done by the Cleveland Clinic, regular exercise is a powerful way to fight seasonal depression, especially if you’re able to exercise outside in natural daylight. Exercise can boost serotonin, endorphins, and other feel-good chemicals in the brain which can make problems seem more manageable.

According to Psychology Today, the simple act of focusing on exercise can give us a break from current concerns and damaging self-talk. In fact, evidence suggests that exercise is not only necessary for the maintenance of good mental health, but it can be used to treat even chronic mental illness. Evidence suggests that exercise reduces the likelihood of depression and also maintains mental health as we age. Exercising with a friend or a personal trainer is preferable to exercising alone for someone with SAD. The social interaction is therapeutic.
