Congressman Bilirakis Opens Two New Offices, One In Wesley Chapel By Gary Nager With several dozen people crammed into every nook and cranny of his new district office in the professional park on S.R. 54, just east of Saddlebrook Resort, Dist. 12 U.S. Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R - Palm Harbor) has actually opened two new offices, including this one, his first-ever in Wesley Chapel. “I previously represented the 9th Congressional District, which didn’t include this area,” Bilirakis said during the Wesley Chapel open house on January 30. “Now, I represent all of Pasco County, so we decided to open new offices in New Port Richey and Wesley Chapel, so our local constituents in those areas can better reach us.” The 12th District also includes parts of northern Pinellas and northern Hillsborough counties, including the parts of New Tampa, north of Tampa Palms. Among the dignitaries on hand at the Wesley Chapel open house was

Pasco County District 5 Commissioner Jack Mariano, as well as Roger Mitchell, the regional president of the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), a Congressionally chartered, non-profit organization that represents the interests of the Sea Service community (e.g., the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard), especially the enlisted members of those forces, before the U.S. Congress. Mitchell said Rep. Bilirakis, who is the Vice-Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Task Force for the Republican Policy Committee and CoChair of the Military Veterans Caucus, earned the recognition, “by a unanimous vote,” because of his “service to all U.S. military veterans.” Rep. Bilirakis, who didn’t know he was even nominated, was obviously touched by the honor and gladly donned an FRA garrison hat given to him by Mitchell. “I will cherish this award,” he said.

“I know the good work that the FRA does on behalf of our (sea) service men and women.” Rep. Bilirakis said that as the 113th Congress begins its work this month, there are, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis “many tough times (above, l.) was honored ahead, and tough by the Fleet Reserve Assn. decisions that have (right) at the Grand to be made” to Opening of the Congresshelp pull the coun- man’s new office off S.R. try out of its cur- 54 in Wesley Chapel. rent economic woes. He added that he, “welcomes the input of every constituent,” so that he can make his decisions on some of the country’s most critical issues, “based on what the residents of the 12th District say they want.” In other words, Rep. Bilirakis wants your input on any of the issues coming before Congress and he says the best

way to contact him is by emailing him from his website, Bilirakis. House.gov. “I see every letter and email sent to me,” he said. “And I want to hear from you!” Rep. Bilirakis’ Wesley Chapel office (5901 Argerian Dr., Suite 102) is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. For more info, call 501-4942.

many proposals we’ll have to look at.” Two separate listings currently appear on the county’s solicitation website, one for the design of the park, and one for its management, operation and maintenance. Stromer says that with both listings out at the same time, it will be easier for the designer and operator to communicate with each other, as well as with the county, to put together a plan that works for the Fields. “This will make the process run more smoothly,” Stromer says. “It’s much easier having (the designer and operator) working together.” He says that it will be much more efficient than having a design in place and then having to find an operator, or vice versa. The County has several requirements that it will be looking to satisfy when considering design proposals. See “Bidding” on page 9.

The search is on for which companies will construct and operate the planned “Fields At Wiregrass” project, which received the go-ahead from Pasco County last November. The bidding opened on January 15 for the sports complex project, which will be built with $14 million in County tourism funds on more than 200 acres of land inside the Wiregrass Ranch DRI (Development of Regional

Impact) that has been donated by the Porter family. Companies interested in both designing the complex and maintaining and operating it have until February 15 to submit their proposals. Although the bidding period has been open for nearly three weeks (as of our press time), Pasco purchasing director Scott Stromer says that not many bids have yet been submitted. “We won’t see many bids until the last few days,” Stromer explains. “That’s when we’ll get a feel for how

Gearing Up For The 20th Annual ‘Taste’ On March 24! As I write this editorial, I am excited to say that there are only eight weeks until the 20th annual Taste of New TampaTM will be held in Primrose Park, located behind the Primrose School and across Commerce Park Blvd. in Tampa Palms from Freedom High and Liberty Middle School. The 2013 Taste will be held on Sunday, March 24, noon-6 p.m., and it truly promises to be the biggest and best year ever of New Tampa’s signature one-day event, especially if everyone in Wesley Chapel who reads this editorial also participates — whether as a sponsor, business exhibitor, food or beverage provider, volunteer or attendee. More than 700 local businesses already have received emails from us about the Taste and the Board members of the New Tampa Chamber of Commerce — which puts on this event every year — are busy contacting as many businesses as possible as well. As I have so many times in years past, especially before the now-defunct New Tampa Community Council (which was replaced by the Chamber six years ago) hosted the Taste, I have been keeping myself busy visiting as many restaurant owners in person as I can to ensure that we make my goal of between 40-50 restaurants who will provide samples of their respective cuisines to this year’s Taste attendees. In order to entice more restaurant participation, I convinced the Chamber

An editorial by Gary Nager Board to provide reimbursement for the cost of the food the restaurants provide by reducing the cost of admission to the 2013 Taste to only $5 per adult (and children older than age 12) if you buy your tickets in advance (we will announce all of the presale locations in our next issue) because we’re going to, for the first time ever, also charge attendees $1 per Taste (although some restaurants may charge more than $1 per Taste for providing larger samples). The restaurants will get to keep 50 cents of each $1 ticket they redeem at the end of the event. The cost of admission goes up to $10 per adult the day of the Taste, so you’ll definitely want to get your admission tickets in advance. Children ages 12 and younger will still get in for free, but will still also be charged per taste. I’m not going to announce any of the participating restaurants until next issue, but rest assured, there will be significantly more and some more upscale restaurants this year than last, as many restaurateurs and beverage providers are pretty pumped up to be part of the 20th annual Taste! And, don’t forget that also for sale for $1 per taste this year will be beer and wine samples from some of your favorite beverage providers.

ipating as a sponsor or exhibitor for this year’s Taste of New TampaTM. Taste business booths start at just $200 for New Tampa Chamber members and you can join the Chamber anytime between now and March 10 and still be eligible to have a booth at the Taste. You also can be a Taste sponsor for as little as $500, which allows you to bring an advertising vehicle to the event. All sponsors and participating restaurants will get to park their advertising vehicles in designated areas around the perimeter of the Taste, so that as attendees walk up to the entrance, they will be able to see your advertising message. We also are

offering many other higher sponsorship levels, each with more goodies and freebies to help promote your business at the New Tampa area’s historically bestattended one-day event. For more information about Taste sponsorships & business & restaurant exhibitor booths, visit TasteNewTampa.NewTampaChamber.org or NewTampaChamber.org, or call the Chamber’s executive assistant Jayne Baker at 293-2464. Our office manager Nikki Bennett also will be happy to send you Taste applications if you call our office at 910-2575. But hurry! You won’t want to miss it!

Big-Time Entertainment, Too! The 2013 Taste also will feature a “Battle of the Bands” and the day’s headline act will be the band Big Brother, whose Facebook.com page says, “has been rockin’ since 1982.” The group apparently has a great following throughout the Tampa Bay area and also tours out of state.

W ESLEY C HAPEL Gas Leak Causes Evacuation, Road Closure

The “all clear” has been given for a Wesley Chapel building that was evacuated the morning of January 29 due to a natural gas leak. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), just after 9 a.m. on January 29, a natural gas leak was reported in the Seven Oaks area that caused road closures and at least one building evacuation. However, the “all-clear” has been given and closed intersections at Mystic Oak Blvd. and Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. and Redfern Way and BBD were reopened later the same day. Although intersections were closed, morning traffic along BBD was not affected. A Pasco County Fire Rescue (PCFR) Sergeant described the leak as minor in the report, which also says that a lawn maintenance worker running over a gas valve may have caused the leak. No additional information was available at our press time.

News Briefs the midst of a mass closing by the supermarket chain. According to a press release on January 16 from Sweetbay Supermarkets, the company is closing 33 stores in Florida, 22 of which are located in the Tampa Bay area, including the New Tampa location on Bruce B. Downs (BBD) Blvd. near I-75. The under-performing stores are set to close by midFebruary, the release says. Not on the closing list, however, are the S.R. 54 location in the Wesley Chapel Towne Center and the BBD/County Line Rd. store. “While these decisions are difficult, especially given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, these actions will continue to enhance the performance of our overall store portfolio and further enable us to deliver profitable growth and accelerate shareholder value,” the release said. Sweetbay — which replaced the now-defunct Kash-N-Karry grocery store chain beginning in 2004 — had 105 different locations at the end of 2011 across the western coast of Florida. Once the announced closings are complete, the chain will retain only 72 of those locations, leaving more than 2,000 employees without jobs. Sweetbay spokesperson Nicole

“Bidding” Continued from page 1 Among these, included in the design must be eight, 300-ft.-fenced and fully-lighted baseball fields, each with electronic scoreboards, Major League Baseball-style dugouts and bleachers, one “championship stadium,” multi-purpose turf fields to accommodate soccer and lacrosse, walking/biking trails, a playground area, a 400-car parking lot, plus several other requirements. The designer also would be responsible for the infrastructure design for the entire complex and a recommendation of whether to use real grass for the fields, or AstroTurf. Stromer says that a committee made up of senior County staff, at least one County Commissioner and a representative from the Parks and Recreation department will review the design proposals, but he added that the list of possible committee members is still undecided. “The design proposals will be completely qualification-based,” Stromer explains. “We want to find a company with lots of experience building something like this.” However, he says, cost will definitely be an issue for the operation and maintenance proposals.

For operations and maintenance, Stromer says that proposals must include an analysis of the company itself, as well as a summary of the company’s concept for running the complex, proof that there is a market for the proposed concept, identification of the company’s advantage against competition in the region, as well as a marketing, operations and finance plan. Most important is that the company must provide at least ten percent of the cost to construct the complex and will have to negotiate a revenue-sharing agreement with the County, if chosen. “The operations side is more of a business review of the company making the proposal,” Stromer explains. “It’s pretty intensive. We’ll send the information off to an economist to run the numbers on the offers that we get.” The County will spend 60-90 days going through both types of proposals, although Stromer says that the process may be expedited. On February 15, all bids will be sealed for 30 days, after which, they will become public record. If the company cannot find partners to design and operate the facility within 24 months, it will instead become a district park.

Nearly 70 ‘Nuisance’ Hogs Taken In Three-Day Flatwoods Hunt! By Matt Wiley After three nights in the New Tampa woods, local hunters have helped put a dent in the wild hog population in the Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve, located east of I-75 and north of U.S. 301. The hunt, which was put on by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (aka Swiftmud), began at dusk on January 22-24, and produced 68 hogs, whose population was becoming a problem, as the omnivorous wild pigs uproot vegetation to find food. A Swiftmud release says that the

Casino Night To Benefit Noah Nero Feb. 15!

A group of hunters waits for dusk to begin the hog hunt in New Tampa’s Flatwoods Park.

District only uses hog hunts when the damage that the hogs cause reaches an “unacceptable level,” which, in some cases, can leave swamps and pine flatwoods looking like plowed fields. The District says that the damage has become severe and frequent enough to warrant such a hunt. “It’s been a very successful year,” says Will VanGelder, Swiftmud’s senior land management specialist. “This is a fiscally responsible approach to hog control. We cover (our) expenses through registration fees, which takes the burden off the taxpayer.” The New Tampa-area hunt was one of 13 across the state. There were 280 total hunting permits avail-

Our wonderful friends at Wesley Chapel Nissan, in conjunction with Pasco County comptroller and clerk of the court Paula O’Neil and the Wesley Chapel Lions Club, are hosting yet another local Casino Night for a truly wonderful cause. “Casino for the Heart” Night, a fund raiser for Noah Nero and his family, will be held Friday, February 15th 6 p.m.-10 p.m., at Wesley Chapel Nissan, located at 28519 S.R. 54 (at Wesley Pointe Blvd.) If you haven’t heard the story, Noah Nero is a five-year-old boy who was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The bottom line is that this fund raiser is to benefit his family as Noah is now

recovering from his recent heart transplant. Event organizer Susan Bruemmer-Casey of Insurance New Tampa says the event should be fun for the whole family Noah Nero and Noah’s mother Cherish is planning to attend! Casino Night sponsorships are available, ranging from $100-$1,000. Tickets to attend are a $20 donation per adult and all proceeds will go directly to the Nero family. able District-wide, although only 22 were available for the New Tampa hunt, which sold out the first day. There were no restrictions on size or the number of hogs that could be taken. Local hunter Kelly Davis and her party pulled out four hogs the first night, each weighing 60-100 pounds. Davis used two dogs, both blue-tick coonhounds, which she breeds and sells with her business House of Blueticks (HouseofBlueticks.com).

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, hogs are not native to the state, have been known to reach five to six feet in length and weigh an average of 100-150 pounds with some specimens reaching more than 600 pounds!

Lee Nails & Spa — A Hidden Gem Worth Finding In The Grove! By Kathleen Schiop Everyone loves to be pampered and I’m no exception. So, when I was invited to indulge in a spa pedicure at Lee Nails & Spa (located in the small professional center opposite TJ Maxx in The Grove Shopping Center off Oakley Blvd.), I jumped at the chance. Owner Tony Truong, who has 16 years in the nail business, says he opened the spa 4-1/2 years ago and has enjoyed loyal patronage ever since. Since the plaza itself is (and always has been) mostly deserted, I wondered how he has managed to not only stay in business, but also thrive. But, my questions were answered when I actually came to the spa. As Tony says, “We believe we will continue to be successful because we trust our experience and how we treat our valued customers.” He adds that he picked the location, because it very a very convenient plaza with plenty of parking. “It’s easy for our customers to get in and out quickly, and this area looks very nice, too.”

Your child can get a pedicure at the same time you do — in his or her own cool pedicure chair at Lee Nails.

Elegance & Friendliness

The first impression upon entering the spotlessly clean Lee Nails is one of elegance. A color scheme of soothing peaches, light browns and yellows greets the eye, and relaxing music is playing. With ten pedicure stations, the spa is able to accommodate large groups, but what first caught my eye was the cute child-sized station, which caters specifically to the little princess or prince in your family. The spa offers a full range of services at affordable prices, ranging from a variety of manicures and pedicures to waxing and facial services, as well as a variety of eyelash treatments and even permanent makeup. My pedicure began when I was seated in a massage chair and my feet were placed in warm, swirling water. I turned to the customer next to me, and asked her how long she had been coming to this spa. April, a regular client who travels all the way from New Port Richey, said she had been to five other spas before finding Lee Nails, and has been a loyal customer ever since. “I love the cleanliness and the nail art work they do,” she said. “It’s unique and well worth the drive here.” Of course, one of the primary concerns of any customer coming to a nail spa is hygiene. So, when my licensed nail technician Mya (one of seven at the spa) began, I first questioned her about the procedures Lee Nails uses to avoid contamination of their tools. She explained that all of the spa’s nail tools are soaked in a powerful antiseptic, placed in a sterilizer, then sealed in a bag. The bags are only opened when the nail technician begins work on the client’s pedicure. After trimming and buffing my feet, Mya began a massage on my lower legs, using a mask which felt cool and tingly and had a wonderful aroma of eucalyptus. She let the mask dry, then followed it with a cooling gel. My feet and lower legs felt fantastic. But then,

she rubbed my legs with an orange scented sea salt and encased my feet with warm, melted paraffin wax, wrapped in plastic. After the pink wax hardened, she peeled it off, leaving my feet feeling incredibly smooth. Utter bliss. The massage was incredibly relaxing, and Mya spent more time on the massage than I’ve experienced at other spas. I thought to myself that Lee Nails would be the ideal place to come after one of my 5K road races as I dissolved into a little, contented puddle. I also asked Lee Nails’ manager and Licensed Aesthetician Cindy about some of the spa’s other product and services. She showed me the menu of spa services, featuring Galvanic Spa, Owner Tony Truong of the elegant NuSkin and Ageloc products, to name a few. She added that the spa uses noth- Lee Nails & Spa in The Grove shoping but the highest quality products to ping center has 16 years of experience give the customer the best treatments in the nail care business. possible. Tampa Rejuvenation Can Help You Keep That New Year’s Resolution! By Matt Wiley No two people are exactly alike. Whether it’s their personalities, a facial feature or two or body types, even identical twins are usually slightly different. The same goes for each person’s body’s response to weight-loss techniques. Exercise and a healthy diet work wonders for some people in a matter of weeks or months, while others work just as hard and see little or no results. For the latter, consider a visit to Tampa Rejuvenation. With one of its three locations in nearby New Tampa (at Bearss Ave. and Bruce B. Downs, or BBD, Blvd.), Tampa Rejuvenation specializes in medical weight-loss through the use of bioidentical hormone therapy, combined with nutrition and fitness. According to its website, with a little help from doctor-prescribed and FDA (Food & Drug Administration)approved medications to reduce hunger, enhance energy levels, improve ability for physical activity, increase stamina for exercise and increase an individual’s resting metabolic rate (or the amount of calories burned while the body is at rest) Tampa Rejuvenation can help you get on track to a healthy lifestyle. For the past five years, Brett

16

Markowitz — the Tampa Palms resident who started Tampa Rejuvenation — and his team of medical doctors and staffers, have been helping treat those with weight issues at three locations, one here in New Tampa, with a second location in South Tampa and another now open in Brandon. “(Tampa Rejuvenation) works with individuals who have various issues, such as hormone or thyroid imbalances, food-sensitivity or weightgain issues, vitamin-deficiency or a mineral imbalance,” Markowitz says. “A lot of patients are put on medication for blood pressure or hypertension by their primary care physicians. We agree that these patients may need those medications, but many times, these doctors aren’t trying to help patients in a preventive manner. People have to take some of these medications for the rest of their lives.” Markowitz says that, for him, helping people lose weight comes from personal experience. After learning about his own body and losing weight himself, he says he realized that most people don’t know that in order to accomplish their weight-loss goals, it’s important to first understand how their own bodies work. A former personal trainer, Markowitz also holds a nutrition degree from Huntington College

of Health Science in Knoxville, TN. “The goal is to teach people to incorporate a different lifestyle that they can maintain,” he says. And that’s where the work of Dr. Johanna deVrye can help. “When patients come in, I first try to figure out exactly what issues they’re having and look at each patient’s medical history,” says Dr. deVrye, who earned her undergraduate and medical degrees from prestigious Northwestern University in Chicago. “Then, I take a look at their physical exam, blood work and saliva test and use that to come up with a diagnosis and plan of treatment.” Dr. deVrye says that her practice Brett Markowitz (left) and Dr. Johanis split between hormone therapy and na deVrye of Tampa Rejuvenation, weight-loss treatment. Custom window coverings from Budget Blinds of Greater Tampa, now located on W. Fletcher Ave., will transform your space into a room you will be excited to show off to family and friends. From blinds, shutters and sliding panels to solar shades and a full line of custom draperies, Budget Blinds’ in-home and showroom design consultants are happy to work with you to bring new life to your space. From its new showroom, located near I-275, Budget Blinds serves homes and businesses in the Tampa Bay area, including Wesley Chapel and all of Pasco and Hernando counties, as well as eastern Hillsborough (including all of New Tampa), Brandon and even into Manatee County. Owners Jim and Elaine Trotter have been married for 28 years and Jim spent 20 years in the corporate world while Elaine stayed home to raise their two boys, James (now 26) and Tanner (24). After several moves, Jim’s work brought the family to the Tampa area, where the couple began dreaming of settling down and running a business together. In October 2008, despite the fact the U.S. economy was in the midst of a

18

downward spiral, the Trotters took a leap of faith and purchased Budget Blinds of Greater Tampa, then located on U.S. 41 in Land O’Lakes, from its previous owner. And, according to Elaine, it has taken faith, hard work and determination to help the couple grow their business. Jim and Elaine complement each other’s strengths. His sales skills, in particular in commercial sales, are strong, while she has more of the financial and bookkeeping skills needed to successfully run a business. Elaine also manages much of the marketing for the company. And, less than five years into their ownership of the business, Budget Blinds of Greater Tampa today boasts a staff of two full-time designers who bring the products to your home or business, as well as two full-time design consultants to assist customers in the showroom design center on Fletcher Ave. that opened in November 2012. “We're excited about our move from Land O’Lakes to the Fletcher Ave. location,” says Elaine. “The new showroom gives us a larger space to display more of the window covering choices our customers desire.” The good news for Budget Blinds customers is that the business literally has your windows and walls covered — whether you prefer to visit the compa-

WRH’s Paula Berry & Long MS’s Darcy Creek Named ‘Teacher’ Finalists! By Matt Wiley The Pasco School District’s 2013 “Teacher of the Year” will be named at the “Heart & Soul of Pasco County” ceremony on Saturday, Februar y 9. The annual celebration, put on by the Pasco County Education Foundation, Inc., is being held this year at Wesley Chapel, where Wesley Chapel schools lead the pack with two of the three Teacher of the Year finalists representing Wesley Chapel-area schools. Among the finalists is Wiregrass Ranch High’s (WRH) Paula Berry, an Advanced Placement language teacher. “Knowing that I’m being recognized in the same group as the other teachers is just amazing,” Berry says. “Being named the ‘Teacher of the Year’ at Wiregrass Ranch was humbling enough in itself.” Currently in her fifth year at WRH, Berry also teaches Speech and an iPad English 2 Honors course (see the next page for more info). She says that her goal now is to complete the application to be considered as an Apple Distinguished Educator, a title given to a select group of educators around the world who are recognized for “doing amazing things with Apple

Wiregrass Ranch High Recognized As ‘Apple Distinguished’ School! As technology continues to be implemented more than ever in education, Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) will be on the forefront of progress, as it was recently named an “Apple Distinguished School” for the 2012-13 school year, the first school in the Pasco County School District (PCSD) ever to receive the prestigious award. “It’s an extremely impressive recognition,” says WRH principal Ray Bonti. “Apple recognizes a very small number of schools nationwide. What’s more impressive is that we are a 2,000student, public high school. Usually, the schools that are recognized are much smaller, private schools.” According to a WRH press release, the school “joins a select class of institutions (that) Apple is recognizing nationwide as exemplary learning environments and centers of innovation, leadership and educational excellence.” The release says that WRH was chosen in part because of its “BYOD (Bring Your Own Devices)” program, which allows students to bring to school, and use as instructional tools, their own computers, smart phones, tablets and iPods to enhance learning. “We’re very open with technolo-

gy,” Bonti says. “It’s embedded in education, so we try to take advantage of it. There are times when using a smartphone for learning is very practical.” WRH also is in the process of establishing a program that will eliminate textbooks in the future, replacing them with iPads. It’s being called the “iPad initiative.” Last school year’s 125 incoming ninth graders were selected to be part of the program and were given iPads to be used for all of their learning needs. “Instead of being issued five or six textbooks, the students are given an iPad,” Bonti explains. “When those students go home, they’ll do their homework with (the iPad), as well. Everything is done electronically.” Bonti says that WRH is the first school in the area to implement such a program and adds that he thinks the program played a major role in being recognized by Apple. The school plans to expand the number of students using iPads each year. WRH will be recognized as an “Apple Distinguished School” at the District School Board meeting on Tuesday, February 19. — MW

WCH & WRH Seek Better Records With New Fooball Coaches By Matt Wiley After tough 2012 seasons for both the Wesley Chapel High (WCH) Wildcats and the Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) Bulls football teams, next season could be a different story, as both schools have hired new head coaches. Coming off a winless season is not easy to swallow, especially for the second season in a row. Wiregrass Ranch’s new head coach Mike Lawrence hopes to change all that. “I’m blessed with the opportunity,” he says. “The most difficult part is getting the kids to buy into what you’re doing. Changing the culture is my top priority.” Lawrence, who is the third coach in the program’s history and served as the team’s offensive coordinator last season, wants to focus on discipline and execution. “We need to make sure that each player knows their assignments and is playing more physically,” he explains. “We have to learn to trust our teammates.” WRH athletic director Dave Wilson says that Lawrence was the ideal pick for the position, especially since he was already familiar with the school and the players, and also has experience playing the game. Lawrence played

22

running back at Division 1A Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, from, rushing for more than 2,000 yards in his four seasons. “He has knowledge of the game and he motivates the kids,” Wilson says. “He’s worked at WRH for the past year, and we thought he could really help turn the program around.” Lawrence will be taking over for previous head coach Jeremy Shobe, who resigned on November 12 after leading the team since 2009. After two 5-5 seasons, with a playoff berth in 2010, his last two seasons as head coach were both winless.

Wildcats Want To Win A few miles to the north and east, the WCH Wildcats also are looking for a better record this coming season, and have hired a new head coach to take the reigns and steer the team in a winning direction. More than 20 people applied, but Tico Hernandez, an offensive coordinator for WRH for the past two seasons, filled former head coach Ben Alford’s position in December. Alford resigned to take an out-ofstate position after leading the Wildcats for three less-than-impressive seasons, with an overall record of 11-19. Her-

nandez says he hopes to improve on those numbers. “I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the players and represent Wesley Chapel High in the community,” Hernandez says. “First and foremost, we need to win in the classroom and get our players’ New Wiregrass Ranch High head football coach Mike Lawrence GPAs up.” (left) and new Wesley Chapel High head coach Tico Hernandez. Wiregrass Girls Win District Soccer Title, Ousted In Regional Semis By Matt Wiley After a phenomenal season and a District championship title, the Wiregrass Ranch High (WRH) girls soccer season finally has come to an end, following a loss to the Lakeland George Jenkins Eagles in the Region 4A-3? Semifinals. Coming off of an 18-2 season, including 5-0 in their 4A District-8 games, the Bulls girls went on to defeat the Sickles High Gryphons and the George M. Steinbrenner High Warriors (14-6), for the school’s second District Championship in seven years, a notable feat for first-season coach Eddy Costa. The regional semifinal match against Lakeland George Jenkins was hard fought, but the Bulls ultimately came up short at home against the high-flying Eagles 4-1, ending their State title hopes with a final season record of 20-3. “The game wasn’t beyond our reach,” Costa says. “We just played our game during the first half,” when the Bulls walked away up 1-0, on a goal from freshman Chloe Lipovetsky. However, the Eagles were not going down without a fight. “Unfortunately, we made some mistakes that (George Jenkins) capital-

the girls and I would have liked to have played (for the State title), but I’m really happy with this season.”

District Champs!

The Bulls had a lot to prove when they made the short drive to Steinbrenner on January 18 for the District 4A-8 championship. Although they fell behind 1-0 before the end of the first half, WRH senior Berlin Waters got the comeback started early with a Bulls goal just min-

utes into the second half, followed shortly by another goal from fellow senior A.J. Blount. “We took away their midfield,” says Costa. “A team like Steinbrenner is going to score on you. We just had to make sure we kept their scoring low. Steinbrenner was a challenge. The girls trained hard for them.” In addition to winning the District title, the Bulls also broke an 11-game winning streak for Steinbrenner, which went on to lose in the Regional Quarterfinal to the same George Jenkins squad that ended WRH’s season a game later. Although Costa is losing several standout players after this season, including Waters, who is committed to nearby St. Leo University; Blount, who is committed to USF; and goalkeeper Dayton Wetherby, who is committed to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, he says he still has high hopes for next season. “We had freshmen starting games throughout the season,” he explains. “They all shone. We might be losing six seniors, but we still have a whole other half of a team. I’m excited for next year. This whole season, our slogan has been ‘believe to achieve.’ We’re just going to keep on believing.”

of more than 100,000 visitors during the two-day event. Among the artists displaying their work was Maitland, FL, resident Rolly Ray Reel, who, for the fourth straight year, was awarded “Best In Show” for his collection of “mixed media” sculpture work. “I’m just thrilled,” Reel said. “I’m definitely coming back next year to push my luck.” Reel specializes in obscure, but unique sculpture pieces made from a wide variety of materials, from items he finds at flea markets, to objects he randomly finds while walking along railroad tracks. Many of the pieces he displayed incorporated framework, which

he did himself, with miscellaneous objects mounted under a pane of glass. The larger sculptures, he explained, all took him several months to construct. Also displaying sculptures at the festival was Rollin Karg, of Kechi, KS, except instead of sculptures made of numerous materials, Karg’s work was made up entirely of glass pieces, which he blew himself. This was Karg’s first year at Suncoast. “(The show) has been very worthwhile,” he said. “The people have been very welcoming. We’ll be back next year.” Karg’s work included numerous pieces, from small, elaborately colorful glass the size of paperweights, to larger, dish-shaped table centerpieces. He said

he didn’t realize that he was an artist until he was 33 years old. Now 68, Karg said that a tour of a glass museum and a class in glass blowing at a craft show changed his life, and he has been doing what he loves ever since, although he “had to learn the hard way, with (blowing) the larger sculptures.” Displaying a wide range of photographic work, from antique barbershop scenes to famous storefronts (including Key West’s iconic Sloppy Joe’s on Duval St.), was Lakeland resident Bill Sargent. With this being his third year at Suncoast, Sargent said that he usually attends between 25-30 shows per year, some as far west as Colorado.

“This show is always put together really well,” he said. “That’s why I keep coming back every year.” For Todd Hammer, of Land O’ Lakes, the Suncoast Arts Fest was something completely new, his first ever art show. Hammer displayed several large “fine art fusion, sculptured oil paintings,” that incorporate both sculpture and painting on diverse surfaces, including masonite wood and the type of foam used in surfboards, resulting in three dimensional works of art. One particularly large piece displayed an underwater scene, in which a sea otter was swimming through a kelp forest.

“I got the idea from a dive I did in California,” Hammer, an avid scuba diver, said. “I get a lot of my ideas from photos I take while scuba diving.” Other booths included everything from hand-made jewelry, handbags and clothing to oil and acrylic paintings, pottery and many other diverse works of art, as well as fine craft works. Tampa Bay Lightning Start The Season Hot At The New Forum! It’s hard to believe that both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Taste of New TampaTM (see page 3) are celebrating their respective 20th anniversaries this season, but even harder for some of us to fathom how we survived until January without Lightning hockey. I attended this year’s opening night on Jan. 19, a thrilling 6-3 thrashing of Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals, and I have to say that I hadn’t seen the crowd at the newly revamped Tampa Bay Times Forum this amped up since the Stanley Cup FINALS (which, of course, Tampa Bay won) in 2004. Owner Jeff Vinick pumped about $40 million in renovations to the Forum, including adding the biggest Jumbotron scoreboard I’ve ever seen, but it would’ve all been for naught had the National Hockey League (NHL) owners and players not come to an agreement in time to end the owners’ lockout of the players in time to salvage the 2012-13 season. But, better late than never for our Bolts, who have always had a huge following here in New Tampa, and have started the season 6-1 and in first place in the NHL’s Southeast Division, even though last-year’s 60-goal scorer Steven Stamkos had only five of the team’s league-leading 37 goals (a 5.3-goals-per-game average) so far. New goalie Anders Lindback has been as good as advertised and the addition of speedy 5’-8” winger Cory Conacher and defensemen Matt Carle and

Winners Grill — Finally, A ‘Sports Grill’ With Great Food! By Gary Nager Photos by Matt Wiley For those of you who are long-time Wesley Chapel residents, you’ve probably seen, passed by and perhaps even tried Winners Sports Grill, located in the Wesley Chapel Village Market, on S.R. 54 near the intersection of Bruce B. Downs Blvd. But, if it’s been a while since you visited Winners — even if it’s only been a couple of months — you owe it to yourself to try it again. About 17 years ago, owner Gerry Malynowsky actually opened all of the original Winners restaurants — in Tampa Palms, Oldsmar and this same Wesley Chapel location — but sold them all to pursue other endeavors, including, most recently, as the executive chef at the T. Pepin Hospitality Center on N. 50th St. in Tampa, and executive chef for Puff n’ Stuff Catering, where he was responsible for providing 5,000 unique meals each day of last year’s Republican National Convention. During his three-year tenure at Pepin, Gerry, a classically trained chef himself who received his formal training at the Culinary Institute in Montreal, Canada, hired fellow chef Kasia Lavigne. who also has had years of outstanding professional experience after earning her prestigious Cordon Bleu culinary degree

30

Of course you’d expect to find great Buffalo and honey garlic wings (far left) at Winners Sports Grill in the Wesley Chapel Village Market (S.R. 54 at Bruce B. Downs Blvd.), but how about zesty wine mussels (center), crispy conch fritters loaded with fresh conch meat (right) or our editor’s new favorite herb-crusted baked half-chicken with homemade chicken gravy (below). from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. The two eventually began dating and when Gerry had to repossess the Wesley Chapel Winners in November, he brought Kasia in to not only cook the food — so he could focus on marketing and running the business — he also had her redesign Winners’ “boring” (Gerry’s words) sports bar menu. “I have so much experience purchasing food for Pepin and the catering company that I know I could provide much higher quality food at Winners and still sell it at a very fair price,” he says. “I told Kasia to get creative and we both think the new Winners menu will appeal to a much larger number of people, but without turning off or scaring away the existing customer base.”

Starting Fresh!

The new menu, which was just

unveiled to Winners’ customers earlier this week, still has many of the same appetizers, including fried mozzarella sticks, “dirty” chicken fingers, quesadillas, Buffalo shrimp and, of course, big, plump chicken wings, but Gerry and Kasia have added some new items too delicious to ignore. Although I’m allergic to mussels (sigh), I have to say that the zesty garlic sauce that Winners’ new wine mussels appetizer is literally swimming in — which also combines white wine, shallots, Pernod liqueur, fresh basil and diced tomatoes — is as good or better than what you can get at most Italian restaurants. I also recently gobbled down an order of the new conch fritters, which are literally loaded with fresh conch, and assistant editor/photographer Matt Wiley raved

about Winners’ new peel-&-eat shrimp. Also new to start area a made-fresh-daily hummus appetizer, which combines garbanzo beans, fresh lemon zest, cumin, garlic, olive oils, Kalamata olives and grilled flatbread for dipping, as well as parmesan garlic breadsticks served with a homemade marinara dipping sauce.

Fresh Fish? Really?

Because both Gerry and Kasia love

The Latest & Greatest News About Dining, Shopping, Retail & More In New Tampa & Wesley Chapel! By Gary Nager

WingHouse Coming To Former Buffalo’s Café!

It’s been vacant a few years already, but the former Buffalo’s Southwest Café, located on S.R. 54 near the intersection of Old Pasco Rd. will soon become — to the delight of all the men, at least, in the Wesley Chapel area — the newest Ker’s WingHouse. Well, in one reporter’s opinion, it should be to everyone’s delight, because not only will owner and former NFL guard (with the Cowboys and Broncos) Crawford Ker’s newest Wing House help make the northern part of Wesley Chapel a little more of a destination for business people and local residents, it also has pretty good food. Yes, the always-hot Wing House girls will still be the biggest attraction, but the naked (unbreaded) wings and other better-than-Hooters fare and staying open for all of the live, pay-perview UFC and boxing matches also will help make Ker’s Wing House as big a hit locally as it has been in it’s current 20 locations throughout Florida since Ker opened the original restaurant in Largo in 1994. Converting the long-

32

vacant Buffalo’s building will take “a few months,” according to a WingHouse spokesperson. Bottom line? You definitely can expect to have a new place to hang for the 2013-14 NFL and college football seasons. Need we say more? I didn’t think so. For additional information, visit WingHouse.com.
