On the cover: Lukas Wellesley was a 3rd grader in Ms. Morrall’s class at MasonRice when he painted our cover art. Lukas moved to the US three years ago from the UK, where he was born. The peace symbol was an art project at school. The art teacher, Ms. Horner, explained the origin of the peace symbol, and Lukas was proud to learn that the original artist was British. When asked what peace means to him, Lukas replied “No fighting, everyone happy, everyone equal.” In addition to art, Lukas loves reading, sports and art.

Event-FULL staff, Instructors

Join us for an action-packed superhero adventure. We’ll provide a roomful of Lego bricks, bases, and figures, and you’ll design and build a city populated by superheroes like Ironman, Superman, The Hulk, and Wonder Woman, as well as everyday heroes like police and firefighters. You’ll work individually and in teams to create and build your expansive and safe-from-crime new city. We’ll keep the Legos, but you’ll go home with a framed photo of yourself with your Lego masterpiece to share with family and friends. Grades K-4.

Cause an eruption! Model volcanoes are staples at science fairs and also make a great family activity for kids who are curious about earth science and chemistry. You and your adult partner will build your own non-toxic volcano complete with colorful lava flows and bubbling mineral pools. Then, of course, you’ll make it erupt. We’ll snap a picture of your pair with your volcano, and you’ll take it home framed to display to visiting wannabe volcano eruptors. Expect to get messy, so dress appropriately. Grades K-4 with an adult.

1 session $55 Saturday October 21 9am–12pm KW30-F17 Newton South For more fun with Legos, see Learn with Legos, on page 11.

Family Night Under the Stars Clay Center Observatory staff, Instructors Learn all about space science from astronomy experts at the Clay Center Observatory in Brookline (www.claycenter.org). Walk among the stars on the Clay Center’s fiber-optic lit stars court, and take in a panoramic view of Boston from their roof deck. Finally, tour the state-ofthe-art observatory and point the telescope towards the planets, moon, and stars. We start promptly at 6:30 pm; latecomers may miss something exciting. The show goes on unless there’s pouring rain; call 617-7513409 if you’re uncertain. Ages 7 and up with an adult.
