HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THIS BROCHURE

From our Kids Program Director Welcome to NCE Kids Summer 2019. Here you’ll find such a wide variety of classes— you’ll be surprised they’re all offered in one place. But that’s what we do. If you love art, you’ll be over the moon to find we have greatly expanded our arts offerings. To help you navigate them, we’ve categorized them into Culinary, Digital, Dramatic, Textile, and Visual Arts. I could make a personal plug for all of them, but you should definitely check out our new Creative Lettering and Modern Mosaics classes; you won’t find those anywhere else. Science enthusiasts and techies: we’ve got lots for you too, including new Game Design with Scratch, returning 3-D Printing classes, and, of course, Camp Invention, whose name says it all. Plus… big news this summer: it’s the inaugural summer of NCE Tech, four weeks of programming classes for high schoolers in July. Check it out! So, whoever you are—if art, science, sports, or a big mix is your thing—come spend your summer with us. Do what you love, or learn something new. Shoot for the moon with NCE. Lisa Rucinski

It shows you the different classes offered each week, listed by location and age group. • Make a full day. Take back-to-back morning and afternoon programs any week, sign up for Lunch, and get a $25 discount. There’s morning and afternoon Extended Day too for those who need it (see our website for details). • Don’t miss our Important Info & Policies on page 23. • Call us! We can help you plan a summer that’s just right for you.

ABOUT THE COVER Tyber Gulley was a senior at Newton North when she painted our cover’s interstellar astronaut. This project was part of her Art Major 4 final project, for which she could choose the topic for her work. Says Tyber, “The galaxy idea was the first thing that popped into my head, so I went with it. I had done similar galaxy-themed pieces in the past that turned out well, so I thought I’d revisit the concept.” Tyber, we’re glad you did!

NEW THIS YEAR Registration closes the Thursday before the following week’s programs. Sign up early so you don’t miss out!

Modern Mosaics

Printmaking

Cecilia Kremer, Instructor

Danielle Larosee, Instructor

Do something special. Join us to make great mosaic art. From our vast array of colorful glass, porcelain, and ceramic tiles, you’ll choose your favorites and make a decorative clock, tray, or nameplate. You’ll learn all aspects of mosaic construction: glass cutting, setting, gluing, grouting, and finishing, and then you’ll develop your own design. We may also make jewelry or treasure boxes, and/ or some smaller pieces of fine art mosaics. Expect to bring home both a stunning piece of art, and the skills you’ll need to make more mosaic projects in the future. All materials will be provided, but you may also bring your own keepsakes—beads from broken jewelry, old china, watches, etc.—to include in your art. Grades 5-9.

Put aside your pencils and brushes—you’re going to love printmaking! Draw and paint with new tools and unusual materials to make one-of-a-kind prints for family and friends. We’ll create block prints, monotypes, and mixed media artworks. You’ll make carved, patterned relief prints from a simple object like an eraser, and a block of E-Z Cut synthetic rubber. Next, you’ll use plexiglass and ink to make beautiful painted monotypes. Then, you’ll combine your new printing skills to create mixed-media collages. You’ll finish the class with multiple original works and a new way to see art opportunities in everyday items around you. Grades 5-9.

Dazzle family and friends with your masterful glass artwork. Make a trivet, name plate, or big decorated mirror with glass mosaic, and two decorative tiles with fusing. With jewelry-mosaic, you’ll place glass beads and dichroic pieces in a deep pendant to create two necklaces, and with etching, you’ll apply a resist to a glass piece and cut out a design. Master these techniques and learn to work safely with glass as you explore the creativity this medium allows. Due to the high cost of materials and firings for this class, there is a materials fee. Please bring a check for $85 made out to the instructor to the first class.

Optics: Science or Illusion?

Robotics 101

Rachel Kaufmann, Instructor

Mahshid Pourmand, Instructor

Circuit Lab staff, Instructors

Take a hike! Join us for a new perspective on the natural world around you. We’ll spend as much time as the weather allows on outdoor adventures close by our classroom. You’ll create your own explorer toolkit with a nature notebook, magnifying glass, and ranger beads; engage your five senses and perform close observations to catch and actually appreciate insects; and learn to track animals, using a map and compass, and looking for signs like nibbled leaves, middens, or animal holes. We’ll also play partner games to help us identify tree types. On indoor days we’ll create a special map to locate a treasure hidden in the wild, learn about orienteering, and perhaps bring some insect guests inside to play. Grades 1-4.

Lighten up! Enter the optics lab for a week of illuminating experiments and eye-opening hands-on activities, and learn about the science that explains what we see. We’ll bounce light off mirrors to see how its reflections cause one or multiple objects to appear, follow the path of light as it bends through water to distort an immersed object, and learn how light scatters to make the sky blue or red. Then we’ll get practical and discover polarization, and how it alters what we see through sunglasses, Polaroid pictures, and more. We’ll also make our own periscopes and telescopes to examine things both near and far. You haven’t seen anything like this before, so join us! Grades 3-6.

Can a robot make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Well, that may depend on the programmer! Join us for an intro to robotics and find out what our tech creations can and can’t do. In this class you’ll enjoy fun, hands-on activities focusing on what it means to write, debug, and execute computer programs. We’ll start low-tech, creating and running “human programs,” and we’ll advance to programming the popular Sphero robot, SPRK+. We’ll program Sphero to speak when it is shaken, change colors on demand, spin like dice to output random numbers, perform magic like Harry Potter’s wand, and more (but not make a P, B, & J sandwich). Grades 2-5.
