notes cover artist MENA LEVIT I’m a former resident of Newton, and my son Gabriel graduated from Newton North High School. I’m also a professional singer/actress and a voice teacher. I have always wanted to paint, but had a challenge aligning the time to explore this dream until about two years ago. Pastel is my favorite medium—it is quick, bright, and filled with vibrant colors. I find it to be very rewarding, and forgiving to a novice painter as errors can be easily painted over and remolded into the desired piece. My initial paintings were exclusively flowers; I later transitioned to animals (my favorite!) and recently to still life. As a performer, I enjoy extracting the personality from the “model” into my paintings in a sharp, humorous, “theatrical” manner. Doing this with merely chalk pastels, pencils, and my fingers just seems absolutely magical to me. Pastel has been a favorite medium of many wellknown artists, and I am thrilled to have found this art form! See more of my paintings on Facebook as Mena’s Art.

what’s new? ¿Hablas Español? Kate Carpenter is learning to speak Spanish, and wants her son Becket to as well. So Kate rounded up a bunch of Becket’s friends and recruited them to join him in our after-school Spanish class at Horace Mann. Meanwhile, Kate is enrolled in our adult Beginner Spanish class with Soledad Phelan. The family plans to test their Spanish skills on their annual outing to Costa Rica this spring. !Muy bien, Kate!

We’ve got Spanish for students of all levels and ages. See pages 7 & 43 for details.

winter 2019 featured teacher JOE GREEN It is my privilege to have been chosen to be featured in this winter’s catalogue. I was hired by NCE in 2005 to teach the GED (Graduate Education Development) prep course for students who needed to get ready for the state-administered high school equivalency exam. This exam gave students who were unable to receive their high school diploma as teenagers the opportunity to enter college or training programs, and to advance in the workforce. It has been a learning opportunity for me to meet students who’ve ranged in age from late teens to early 60’s and have come from so many diverse backgrounds. Many of them have had stories of hardship, homelessness, abandonment, young parenthood, mental illness, etc, and have struggled finding their way back to a better life. They have been a testament to the old adage “it’s never too late” to begin anew. My journey into adult education was circuitous. In early adulthood I served as a public health volunteer for the Peace Corps. At this pivotal time, I learned to live with little, embrace “simplicity,” and cringe at the burden of acquiring unnecessary possessions. This lesson in humility gave me a broader perspective on what’s really important. I spent my middle years in human services, counseling homeless people who were beginning their journeys toward self-sufficiency. I helped clients develop plans to make housing a reality. They required many services to help them overcome years of difficulty and develop coping skills to adhere to societal definitions of “social norms.” GED training was one of these services. This work provided a nice segue for me to NCE, where I help individuals from diverse backgrounds believe in themselves, and encourage them to pursue their goals. Life is about second chances, and the GED (now referred to as the HiSet—High School Equivalency exam) is that “gateway” that opens doors and empowers students to achieve and maximize their potential attributes. I feel truly fortunate to be teaching for Newton Community Education. Thank you!

Basic Drawing Gary Tucker, Instructor Drawing, the most approachable form of visual art, is an excellent precursor to painting, illustration, web design, animation, and more. It is also satisfying and challenging on its own. Through the practice of drawing we learn to see the world around us and then interpret it. In addition, there will be homework assignments and weekly critiques. New and returning students welcome. Sargent’s Method of Drawing for Beginners

Portrait Painting with Acrylics

Jack Neylan, Instructor

Acrylic is a relatively new medium in the history of painting, but its vibrancy of color and ability to dry quickly make it perfect for portrait painting. Portraiture is an essential and universal form of art and we will focus on portrait painting through the medium of acrylic paint in this class. We’ll look at both classical and contemporary works of art and examine what qualities make an effective portrait. We’ll also work from reproductions of famous paintings and photographs. For a final project, you’ll create a painting based on a photograph of your choosing.

John Singer Sargent’s paintings are world-renowned for their technique and beauty. However, during his lifetime as an artist and teacher, Sargent spent much of his time drawing. Sargent saw drawing not only as a valid medium in its own right, but as the fundamental medium for any artist. Learn Sargent’s techniques for drawing in both graphite and charcoal. You’ll begin with recreating his drawings and then gradually work towards creating your own work utilizing his methods. Bring graphite pencils, charcoal pencils, and an 18x24 drawing pad to class.

From China, India, and Russia, to the Middle East, the U.K., and the Americas, tea has played a key role in trade, politics, technology (clipper ships, fine china, etc.), and craftsmanship (tea chests, pots, etc.). Join us to sample a half-dozen fine varieties from around the world, as we enjoy a visual history of tea, from fierce Tibetans guarding the “tea route” and vast English tea gardens, to rare Chinese teapots and Russian samovars. Tap Away Stress

Judith Swack, Instructor

Experience emotional freedom using your own fingertips. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) involves tapping your body’s energy points in order to alleviate stress. It’s a simple technique that has been around for over 5,000 years, and anyone can learn to do it. It’s been used for war veterans with PTSD, for stress and trauma relief with survivors of the genocide in Rwanda, and for the Newtown Stress and Trauma Relief Project. Learn this technique and you can apply it to yourself whenever and wherever you want for relief from your stress.

Nobody likes to make mistakes, but many people have difficulty forgiving themselves when they do. It can sometimes be hard not to be hypercritical with yourself and others. We’d admire the upbeat, positive, Oprah Winfreys of the world, and think, “If only we had their brains...” Now, neuroscience reveals that we can change our brains with simple mental exercises, just as we can change our bodies with a daily workout. We can in fact become open, more positive, and genuinely happier, not by repressing our negative thoughts, but by building up the positive pathways in our brains. Before long we can develop a natural buoyancy in our thinking and, along with it, a boost in our creativity, intuition, love lives, and careers. Additional info & policies for Kids school-year programs Behavior Policy

Getting To Class

Locations

It is our expectation that students in our classes will follow their teacher’s instructions. Students are expected to be respectful of their teachers and peers. Students must use only materials designated for their NCE class and use them appropriately. If your child does not meet these expectations, we will communicate with you to discuss his or her behavior. If after two such communications your child’s behavior has not improved, we will ask you to withdraw your child from the class and no refund will be given. If your child exhibits threatening physical behavior towards others in the class, he or she will be withdrawn immediately and no refund will be given.

Kids at each school typically walk themselves to our classes, but younger kids are sometimes escorted by their classroom teachers; please check with your child’s school and/ or teacher. NCE teachers arrive when school ends (12:30 on Tuesdays, and 3:00 on all other days). On Tuesdays, kids eat lunch between 12:30 and 12:45, and on other days they usually have a snack (you must provide your own lunches and snacks). Kids from all schools are welcome at all our classes. School secretaries are at their desks until 3:30 each day and can buzz in kids arriving for NCE classes from other schools.

We post room locations to our website as soon as we have that information.

Early-Release Days

Late Fees

Special Circumstances

Please respect our staff and pick up your child on time. There is a $10 fee for every 10 minutes you’re late. At the fourth occurrence, these fees will double.

Contact us to discuss any medical conditions, allergies, learning styles, or other special circumstances that could impact your child’s experience in our program.

Elementary school classes meet at their regular times on early-release days; check our website for middle school class schedules.

54

617 559-6999

Pick-Up After Class At the end of class, our teachers will bring all kids to the main entrance of the school to be picked up by parents, guardians, or after-school staff. Kids in grades K-2 must be signed out by an adult; kids in grades 3-5 can dismiss themselves with written permission from a parent or guardian. To give your permission, send an email to staff@ newtoncommunityed.org stating your child’s name, grade, NCE class, and school.
